A Wednesday Movie Review by Sputnik

Director: Neeraj Pandey
Cast: Naseruddin Shah, Anupam Kher, Jimmy Shergill, Aamir Bashir, Deepal Shaw, Gaurav Kapoor

A WEDNESDAY tells the story of certain events that unfold between 2 and 6 pm on a particular Wednesday. Prakash Rathod, Commissioner of Police, Mumbai (played by Mr Anupam Kher) gets a call demanding the release of four militants in lieu of information on bombs that the man has planted in various parts of the city. At first, Prakash suspects it to be a crank call but his doubts are dispelled once he actually finds a bomb planted in the police station right opposite his Police Headquarters.

Prakash Rathod gets a team of his best men together and taps all his resources to track down the man. Meanwhile, he comes across Naina Roy, a wannabe-something news channel reporter (played by Ms Deepal Shaw) who also has been tipped off by an anonymous caller. Time passes without any concrete results on the identity of the caller. He puts two of his best men, Arif and Jai (played by Jimmy Shergill and Amir Bashir respectively) to hand over the four militants. It is then that events take a bizarre turn. Suddenly, everything becomes a huge question mark. Who is this man? What is his identity? What are his intentions and what is the motive behind them? The caller (played by Mr Naseeruddin Shah) then reveals his true identity and answers these questions, raising some more in the process.

The movie is set up as a thriller and it does not have a single dull or boring moment. There are no songs in the movie and the pace never slackens. Neeraj Pandey’s direction is very good. It is definitely the best movie of the year so far and it should definitely pick up nominations for best movie and best director. The dialogues are very good and it should earn the movie another nomination for Best Dialogues.

Naseer is just brilliant and this should earn him a Best Actor nomination. His performance shows why he is considered one of the best actors in Indian cinema. Its nice to see Jimmy Shergill in a very good role after a long time (Maachis and Haasil). Its a pity that he often does inconsequential and minor roles. He gets a meaty role and excels in it. This should get him a Best Supporting Actor nomination. Anupam Kher acts well and Aamir Bashir as Jai does a good job and the rest of the cast give decent performances.

Some of the scenes in the control room do remind you of some Hollywood movies with the hacker and stuff. But overall the movie is really good and the twist in the movie is something not many would be able to guess. A must watch for all those who crave really good movies.

Rating: 4.0 / 5 (Very Good)
