Marriage Story Review by Sputnik

A stage director and his actor wife struggle through a gruelling, coast-to-coast divorce that pushes them to their personal and creative extremes. Marriage Story is heavily inspired by Kramer vs Kramer including the poster of the movie.

Marriage Story is like an modern updated version of Kramer vs Kramer. In Kramer vs Kramer Joanna leaves her husband as well as her son as she feels depressed and wants to do something with her life and not just be a housewife. In Marriage Story Nicole leaves her husband but with her son as she feels she wants to do something with her life and not just be an actress in her husband’s plays. In Kramer vs Kramer, the father learns to take care of the son and they start bonding whereas in Marriage Story the father is trying to bond with his son while flying cross country to be with him. In both the movies the lead characters are still being nice to each other while their lawyers fight dirty. Even the ending of the movie is very similar.

The movie has some very good scenes like the scene where Charlie first meets with his lawyer Jay, the scene where Charlie and Nicole are in a meeting with Nora and Bert, the courtroom scene where Nora and Jay fight dirty and the scene where Charlie cuts himself before the expert evaluator. The best scene of the movie is the scene where Charlie and Nicole have a bitter argument in Charlie’s apartment.

Scarlett Johansson is excellent as Nicole and she will definitely be nominated for an Oscar for Best Actress and has a very good chance of winning too. Adam Driver is excellent as Charlie and will definitely be nominated for an Oscar for Best Actor. Joaquin Phoenix will and should win though. Azhy Robertson is very good as Henry, Nicole and Charlie’s son. Laura Dern is excellent as Nora Fanshaw, Nicole’s lawyer. She will also definitely be nominated for an Oscar for Best Supporting Actress and has a very good chance of winning too. Alan Alda is good as Bert Spitz, Charlie’s second lawyer. Ray Liotta is good as Jay Marotta, Charlie’s first lawyer. Julie Hagerty is good as Nicole’s mother. The rest of the cast is good too.

Kramer vs Kramer is a far superior movie which still holds well even after all these years. It feels more real than Marriage Story which is set in the world of Theater and Television. Those who have watched Kramer vs Kramer may not be able to enjoy Marriage Story as it feels very derivative. Marriage Story is still a good watch because of the lead actor’s performances though.

Akele Hum Akele Tum was inspired/copied from Kramer vs Kramer. In Akele Hum Akele Tum Manisha played an actress and in Marriage Story Scarlett plays an actress too which is a weird coincidence. Aamir played a singer whereas Adam plays a Director.

Had made this post on Akele Hum Akele Tum Scenes Inspired/Copied from Kramer vs. Kramer back in 2012.
