Recco: Downfall (Der Untergang) Review by Sputnik

This portrayal of Adolf Hitler’s final days is based on the memoirs of Traudl Junge, the young secretary who with him until his death. Holed up in a bunker in Berlin, Hitler spends his last days in chaos, vacillating between paranoia and defiance.

This is the movie which has the famous Hitler scene which has been parodied with different subtitles so many times for so many things like Sachin’s retirement and so on.

Very good movie though a bit long. It was nominated for an Oscar for Best Foreign Language film. It humanizes Hitler and the Nazis that you almost feel sympathetic towards them. The scene where Magda Goebbels kills her daughters was very moving and chilling at the same time.

Bruno Ganz was absolutely brilliant as Hitler – calm/gentle one moment and completely paranoid/crazy/furious at another moment. Alexandra Maria Lara was pretty and acted well as the naive secretary. Juliane Köhler was ok – better than the last time I saw her in Nowhere in Africa. Performances were very good by the rest of the cast.
