I had once read a comment on PassionforCinema.com that Lagaan is inspired from an episode of the TV Serial Nukkad. Watching these episodes it definitely seems inspired. The local team is challenged to a cricket match by cricket players. There is training and then there is the cricket match. Interestingly the episode is directed by Aziz Mirza.

Le lo..lagaan bhi chori ka mask nikla. 😀
Definitely inspired.
Agreed almost same Cricket match in Lagaan.
This is same as me claiming TDK was copied from that paresh scene in Daud except that I did that for fun.
Did you read my response to your TDK – Daud comment.
“Good find and Paresh seems to be playing pyscho too like Joker. But making a permanent smile with knife is known as “Glasgow Smile”. Check this.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Glasgow_smile”
Anyways I saw the part of the confrontation from the first part and fast forwarded through the training bits. I watched the second video in full.
I said “inspired” and it is definitely inspired from this episode. I don’t think it is just a coincidence – watch the second video in full and you might agree with me. Nukkad was a very popular show back then and Ashutosh is old enough to have seen Nukkad.
Even What’s Your Raashee? was based on the Gujarati novel Kimball Ravenswood by Madhu Rye. The novel was already adapted by Ketan Mehta into a TV serial Mr.Yogi (1989) which became very popular back then. Now that one did not have the same actress playing all the roles.
So he is definitely not averse to taking inspiration from popular TV serials of the late 80s.
And inspiration or not Lagaan is still the best movie of the decade for me.
Not only Lagaan one more movie is somewhat inspired by Nukkad…. to check out visit this page….. https://mere-reviews.blogspot.com/2012/07/nukkad1986-87-old-doordarshan-serial.html ….. A tribute to nukad
Thanks for that info. Will definitely check out that episode.
