Best Opening Credits/Title Sequences in Bollywood Movies

Bollywood movies usually have opening credits with just the titles. There is rarely anything interesting going on. This post is about the Best Opening Credits/Title Sequences in no particular order. Please post your favorites.

Luck By Chance opening credits feature the extras and the workers working in the Film Industry. Zoya talking about the opening credits sequence was already posted here before. Link

Taare Zameen Par Opening Credits have a beautiful animation sequence which in a way captures Ishaan’s imagination in the movie.

Swades opening credits start off with the word Swades in different Indian languages and Shah Rukh Khan on a plane returning to India. Yes the flight from outside is bad vfx but the background music by Rahman is great.

The 1978 movie Don has important scenes from the movie playing in negative. Good background score too.

Maine Pyar Kiya had a opening credits with two dancers dancing in shadow where their faces are not clearly visible. Like the dancing. The title song is copied from I Just Called To Say I Love You by Stevie Wonder Link

Hum Aapke Hai Kaun had opening credits with Salman and Madhuri lip syncing to the title song up close. Yes Boss was inspired from this for the opening credits.

Katha has an animation sequence of The Tortoise and the Hare where the Hare wins and it perfectly fits the the theme/story of the movie where Farooque Sheikh is the hare and Naseer is the Tortoise.

Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara opening credits have Hrithik and Farhan preparing for their trip showing how different they are – how organized Hrithik is and how unorganized Farhan is.

Talaash opening credits show the Mumbai night life and the red light areas.

Not in same category as above but I like opening credits of Bandit Queen and Lekin

from 12:00 onwards … (credits start late in the movie) creating a perfect feel for it.

Same case for Lekin: (Listen to Gulzar dialogues in the end – perfect for the mood of the film)

Good ones Ritz. Like the Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan song from Bandit Queen and Gulzar’s dialogues at the end from Lekin.

Ofcourse scenes I posted are not innovative in a way – just that they set the mood for the movie.

Nice post. My personal favourite is Katha one. Had never noticed Swades opening credits or may be forgot.

Remember a similar animated one of a movie called Jangal main Mangal starring Pran. Could not find the link though.

Chalti Ka Naam Gaadi Opening Credits. Not sure but could be first use of animation during credits. Some of it is normal titles but some of it is smart like Dances, Art Direction, Produced by and Director

Came across this while surfing for something..someone discussing an opening sequence of Farz also has the video of the same. Just thought will put up the link here mainly for the video.

Sputnik is a virtuoso blogger pioneered in distinctive & exceptional posts that tastes palatable & found uncommon. Applause’s!!!

Looking forward to some more contribution from other members.

PS: I have hardly given any importance to opening credits of any film and hence my observation is very limited.

PPS: Anyhow I came across one of the funniest opening credit for the film “Kaun Roklega Mujhe”

Haha FS Bhai… That was Fun!

      Thanks FS.

      Hilarious opening credits. LOL

Chaiyya Chaiyya was used during the opening credits of Inside Man. You probably already know this.

      • FS 11 years ago

lol yeah, thanks for the video. I was shocked to hear it and even discussed it with my cousin brother who had actually recommended this movie. Your memory power is excellent dude no doubt abt that.

        • Serenzy 11 years ago

Even I was amazed to see that happening.!!!

I closed my VLC player and re-started again… Checked whether the dubbing on the file I’d donwloaded isn’t wrong and stuff(Dil Se… dialogues behind the Inside man movie) πŸ˜€

    Good Post, Sputnik!
    Cheers.
Loved the LBC, ZNMD and TZP opening sequences quite a lot.

    .

Here’s one of my favourites which shows the lead character – Rohan’s “mixed emotions” of separating from his close hostel buddies and at the same time, going back to his ‘unloving’ father, shot on a train journey with an even more amazing composition in the background and perfect lyrics(“Kahaani khatam hain ya shuruwat hone ko hain”) from the “Amitabh Bhattacharya+Amit Trivedi” Combo.

    Udaan(2009)

ps: I’ve lost counts of how many times I must have re-watched this movie at late-nights.

    • FS 11 years ago

I liked Udaan but not to the extent of your expressions. I have seen you expressing your likeness abt Udaan since its release but i guess its more to do with your teenage connection to the film than the direction & performances.

      • Serenzy 11 years ago

Were you being sarcastic/taunting there? πŸ˜›

Anyways, we all have such “special movies” which are dear to us… Being all that and much more I also love UDAAN very much for it’s direction and performances too(Ronit Roy, Ayaan Boradia and Anand Tiwari too were superb in it).!

Btwn this and WAKE UP SID, I’ll go for WUS though.

Thanks Serenzy. The train scene reminded me of the opening credits of Kabhi Haan Kabhi Naa.

The initial credits start immediately with the title of the movie but there is a long scene and then the main credits start with the song Dil Deewana.

      • Serenzy 11 years ago

Hahaha… That reminded me of ‘Raanjhanaa hua main tera’ sequences(the basic themes of both are similar)!

      • yakuza 10 years ago

I remember how I recommended everyone this movie when release .. My all time fav SRK movie.

  12. FS 11 years ago

WOW! Just found an interesting fact!!!!

One of the song of the famous film “Gumnaam – 1965” has been used as an opening credit for an English film titled “Ghost World” starring Scarlett Johansson.

“Jaan Pehchan Ho” Opening Credit of the film “Ghost World”

“Jaan Pehchan Ho” Original song of the film “Gumnam”

Gulzar’s movie angoor has a nice animated opening credit…

    Agreed with LBC, Don, HAHK.

    My addition-

    1. Life in a Metro- I have mentioned this before too. It is classic for me. That awesome background music and also the way each character’s face is revealed. Two thumbs up!

    2. Kabhi Alvida Na Kehna- introduction of all 5 characters.

    3. Jaane Tu ya Jaane na- That blurred pictures of Mumbai were mesmerizing! And of-course the excellent song backing it.

Don’t know how I missed this. Shatranj Ke Khilari opening credits feature Sanjeev Kumar and Saeed Jaffrey playing Shatranj (Chess) with narration by Amitabh Bachchan and lovely background music composed by Satyajit Ray himself.

I don’t quite remember the film name or may be I am confused but either it is Yeh Jawani Hai Deewani or some other movie starring Ranbir Kapoor that I watched recently in theatre had very good opening credits right from the smoking caution in the beginning of a d start in a totally different way that I liked it very much.

Its inspired from James Bond opening titles.

      • John Galt 10 years ago

yes, I was thinking the same too…Goldfinger probably.

      • yakuza 10 years ago

Still it was Awesome … and quite authentic being Bollywood version of Bond movies.
