A: “There are many. There is a Korean one called ‘memories of murder’. I watched it many times and it was part of the inspiration for me wanting to make a murder mystery, although ‘Talaash’ is in no way inspired by it. There have been so many memorable ones. Ben Affleck’s directorial debut ‘Gone Baby Gone’ was brilliant. It made me think. There’s ‘Chinatown’ of course.
Q: Why don’t we make more of these movies?
A: “I don’t know. Conventionally, the Hindi film industry … it’s only in the last three or four years that things are changing and people are experimenting with different genres. People have tried things like this in the independent and small space.”‘

talaash is not inspired from memories of murder, it will be inspired from that secret korean film that sputnik has seen but refuses to tell us the name 😛 he wants the barfi euphoria again
talaash is inspired from excel’s own kartik calling kartik – sputnik can expand more on this later
I don’t think Reema will copy the way Anurag Basu did for Barfi. I know that there was one scene in Honeymoon Travels which was inspired/copied from My Super Ex-Girlfriend. Abhay and Minisha getting super powers due to a meteor strike scene was inspired from a similar scene of Uma Thurman getting superpowers.
Thanks. She mentions Memories of Murder and Gone Baby Gone – Talaash certainly looks like that kind of film – the emotional suspense which these films had / apart from suspense they were more to do with what happens to the lives of the characters in the film and their emotional built-up.
And for that reason, I understand why Aamir or anyone is not sure about its BO prospects.
I Hope TALAASH Pulls Off a Better Suspense than Don2/KCK[Excel Works] and the Movie should Not Get too Slow and Boring as the Core Concept Suggest Aamir Coming in Terms with Life After Losing his Boy to an Accident.
Even a Kahaani, Don[SRK] Type Twist will be More than Acceptable and a JG/EHT Type Treatment.
Then there will be No Stopping TALAASH then…
Thats the biggest concern for me too ! Excel’s movies have this tendency to be slow, lets c how different this one is in terms of treatment.
One news though is that it has got PHENOMENAL Advance booking in plexes but expectedly not much excitement in smaller centres and i think it will stay that way irrespective of how good or interesting it is (in smaller centres). Ppl there are waiting for a certain Khiladi and Chulbul Pandey 🙂
Already Aamir and Reema have mentioned it number of times that it does not have the pace of a thriller. It is a suspense drama and not a thriller (where the pace is faster/ something happens every few mins/more action etc)
Yup ! I agree n know that its a suspense drama but by being slow i meant it should not bore the audience whatever be the genre if it wont be able to hold the audience then it will be called slow! And excel movies in past have been accused of being that be it Lakshya. Don or KCK. So yes what m expecting is an intense n engaging drama.
Slow per se is Not a Problem Ritz… Like Say Memento/Usual Suspects/Shutter Island/Psycho/Sixth Sense are in a Sense Slow Movies.
But What Separates them and Makes them a Classic to Me and Gives them Major Critical Appreciation is the Fact that it Ended on a High and Managed to Trick, Fcuk the Viewers.
So, TALAASH will have to have a Superb End-15Minutes to Save the Movie.
If the Ending Falls Flat, then it will get Thrashed plus the Slow Pace will Harm it more.
I won’t Mind an Open End either if done intelligently.
I think Talaash is riding too much on the twist/ending. The way they have promoted the movie intentionally or unintentionally everyone is expecting a mind blowing twist and if the twist/ending is good people will like the movie or else they won’t. I hope its not the usual multiple personality twist because its been done to death in Hollywood and excel themselves did in KCK.
I think slow pace helps (provided it is still engrossing) in case of a big final twist because that helps the director suck the audience in.
And you know the grosses of Memento/Usual Suspects/Shutter Island in US? Sixth Sense was a different beast. If it is slow and dark it won’t gross much. If it entertaining and little light it would do good business. It would be difficult to hide the twist in twitter world. But you can confuse people by twitting multiple fake twists to confuse people 🙂
i dont think memento was a slow film. its screenplay was very pacy. from the trailers, talaash doesnt look like that. May be it will be more close to memories of murder type treatment.
sputnik – films which rely on twists dont have strong legs. Race crashed after one week.As ritz said, Talaash should have some emotional relatability with the characters like MoM.Only then it will be able to age well as a film and also on BO.
Race had too many twists. It was one twist after another and everyone was double crossing every one else. Actually they were quite ridiculous but credit should go to Abbas Mustan for managing to pull those off.
Agree with you that the final twist has to have some emotional connection. Aamir is saying that its actually a movie about coming to terms with the loss of a loved one and that people will watch the movie because of the emotional connection.
As I said in past , check “Goodbye Lover” and you will find how lame Race was.

I think that Abbas Mustan manage to make good or at least decent masala adaptations of Hollywood movies. I liked Baazigar and Ajnabee more than the originals. Daraar was not bad even though it copied a lot from Sleeping with the Enemy. Humraaz was ok but not as good as A Perfect Murder. I like not like Aitraaz that much when I first saw it but recently when I saw the last 30 min or so it did not seem bad. I have seen 36 China Town in parts and found some scenes entertaining – just found out that even that is copied.
I don’t know how they went wrong with Players. When I saw The Italian Job it seemed perfect for a Bollywood remake. It probably needed better stars – may be a Aamir/SRK/Saif.
hithere – goodbye lover is poorly rated on imdb. does it have unpredictable twists? on wiki, there is mention of adulterous wife. I am interested in the film if it has some scenes 😉
sputnik – aitraaz was better than disclosure. Its second half was corporate rivalry.
The things is, Race has so many big black hole in logic that you just remember Katrina’s songs 🙂
Relatively GL has better logic and it ends little eralier than Race in narrative. It is rated poor becuase it is normal masala thriller.

Have you guys seen Gone Baby Gone? One of the best movies I have ever seen. Ben Affleck surprised me with his direction (never liked him as an actor). I would rate it higher than ‘The secret in their eyes’ and ‘Tell no one’.
The Climax of Gone Baby Gone puts a lump in throat.
Liked GBG but I was not blown away by it.I don’t remember anything about it. The secret in their eyes is like Hindi movie, it has many tracks and all of them gel well. In fact I like the Love story in the movie more than the suspense. Tell No one is also good and I would rate it better than GBG.
‘Tell no one’ is good but for me the Doctor hero taking help of his gangster friends (after running away from Police/while in hiding) kind of diluted the thrill part of the film. Had he been without any help – would have been more interesting. The climax was good though and its a good love-story.
Tell No One had better defined characters than GBG. In GBG the mother’s and some other characters are kind of slightly stereotypical. But I kind of connected more with the film towards the end because of climax.

It looked like some Indian masala movie on that point. The thugs kidnapping the hero and the part that follows was also totally unnecessary.
Actually lot of things including the whole twist/climax are quite far fetched.

Yes, love story part of “Secret in their eyes” was very good.
What worked for me apart from that was witty dialogues (ex – exchanges between detective and his friend, detective flirting) Liked the acting by all actors in it.
MoM also had humor / wit in dialogues.

I just saw Argo directed by Ben Affleck this week. It was good but after reading some comments on IMDB and reading more on wiki it seems that the movie took too many cinematic liberties. Most of what was shown in the movie never really happened. I have to now say its just a good masala movie partly based on a true story.
