“Kinna Sona Tenu Rab Ne Banaya” .. my most fav.

I like him more for his couple of Khusro songs more (otherwise he went for Western beats too much in his bollywood songs/later outings) :

    Aaj rang hai

and then other one is Chaap Tilak one.

Btw Afreen Afreen is a fantastic number, no doubt.

(sorry if my above comment came across as a snide remark – but I rather remember him for his main strength which his voice was suited to)

i like sanson ki mala, sanu ik pal , piya re, choti si umar, ishq ka rutba. infact most of his songs are great. i think he is a greater artist than rahman in his domain and also a better singer. he could sing a single line in many types of ways.rahat fateh ali khan is only 10-15% of him and ppl go gaga over him

  5. Anjanpur685Miles 11 years ago

Ah, Chotisi Umar – its one of his best.

Cant talk about Rahat as I dont have an opinion about him (havent heard him enough to form an opinion). But Rahman is a different beast altogether.

Nusrat saab is totally uncomparable in the art of Qawaali. The greatest musicians/singers/qawaals of all time can’t get even 1% of what Nusrat saab achieved in this domain. And I’m not here taking something away from Rahman credit (he is definitely one of the best musician of sub-continent) but what he presented in this particular domain, is the worst form of Qawaali.

    @mate

can you site some examples please ? Where did Rahman falter so much? You seem to be an expert on qawwali 🙂

Regarding the above song, this is one of my favourite NFAK’s song. But then there are more than 100 songs/qawwaalis that I like equally or more. Right now I’m listening to this song, that’s also one of my favourite.

    @mate

You didnt answer my question. Mention one Qawwali song by Rahman and criticize it to the point – as to why it is bad.

    Thanks

You yourself blamed Rahman out of the blue – isnt it? Why he presents “worst form of Qawwali” ..I really want to know.

    • mate 11 years ago

Before giving you the answer, first I want to ask you a question. Do you think the todays award winning ‘singers’ like Mohit/Javed Ali/Arijit etc. deserve to be called as singers.

  10. Anjanpur685Miles 11 years ago

@mate – i dont even know the names you mentioned there above. Please reply specifically to the point – which Rahman Qawwali was not a real Qawwali ??

Dont ask questions when you are supposed to reply.

    • mate 11 years ago

I mentioned these names because these people have been involved and giving their vocals in Rahman’s qawaalis that he composed recently.

It was Altaf Raja’s birthday two days before on 11th. Used to find this song so irritating . It was a big hit specially at Pan shops.

    • John Galt 11 years ago

I love it. Thanks for posting this Baba.

      Altaf is a good singer.

      According to wikipedia

“Dama Dam Mast Qalandar is a spiritual song.[1] The song or kalaam was written in Punjabi by Sufi Saint Baba Bulleh Shah few centuries years ago in honour of the most revered Sufi Saint of Sindh, Shahbaz Qalandar of Sehwan Sharif, near Larkana, Pakistan. It was made widely popular by many Pakistani and Indian singers like Noor Jahan, Ustad Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, Abida Parveen, Sabri Brothers, Wadali brothers, Reshman and mostly by Runa Laila a singer of Bangladesh. It is said that the original qawwali was written by Amir Khusrow and was then modified completely by Bulleh Shah. Apparently, Bulleh Shah gave an entirely different color to the qawwali and added verses in praise of Hazrat Lal Shahbaz Qalandar and Jhulelal, the divine figure of the Sindhi Hindu community. His version of the qawwali gives it a large tint of Sindh culture.”

listen to this one also , its simply great

    yaadan vichre sajan di ayhaan

first 10 minutes its only the medley of the songs , wich in itsel is great

yaadan vichre sajan di ayan aankian vichoun mih vasda
( yaad beechre houe sajan ki ahi , aankoun se barish ho gai )

    listen from 15mn to 19mn

aroubd 23-24 mn you have the litle rahat

from 31 mn, nusrat take this to another level ,
when he says yaadan ahyan ayaan , yadan ayaan ….

I don’t have much knowledge on Qawalis but I love to hear them.

Can someone post a link to a good collection on Nusrat sahad?
A torrent or some link which I can download?

for me “Yeh jo halka halka suroor hai” and “kisi da yaar na vichre” remains his best best compositions. kisi da yaar he sung for Pakistani Drama serial Dhuan which it self is cult classic.
