Barfi Scenes Inspired/Copied from The Notebook, Charlie Chaplin and Other Movies

Barfi has many scenes inspired/copied from other movies. Here are some of the scenes from which Barfi’s scenes are copied. I know that there are lot more scenes but these are the ones I was able to find. I will add more later πŸ˜‰

Even those who have not seen the movie must have seen this promo.

Here is the original scene from the Charlie Chaplin movie The Adventurer.

There is a scene in Barfi where Rupa Ganguly tells her daughter Ileana about her lover. The scene is copied from The Notebook. Here is the scene from The Notebook.

Priyanka coming and lying next to Ranbir during the final scenes is copied from this scene from The Notebook.

There is a scene in the movie where Ranbir walks into a door and his nose gets bent. There is also a scene where he sits on a sofa with a dummy and tries to entertain Priyanka. Both those scenes are copied from Singin’ in the Rain.

There is a scene in the movie where Ranbir is sleeping under the cover of a statue that is inaugurated. That scene is copied from Charlie Chaplin’s City Lights. Charlie Chaplin scratches his leg but Ranbir adjusts his underwear because its obviously more funny πŸ˜‰

There is a scene in the movie where Ranbir is on a ladder and the cops are trying to catch him from either side of the ladder. That scene is copied from Buster Keaton’s Cops.

Here is the Koshish scene from which the scene of Barfi asleep and not listening to his father’s screams is inspired from.

—————–

There is this music which plays almost constantly throughout the movie.

It’s inspired from these two songs from Amelie.

Apart from Notebook hospital scene (I don’t think there is anything original in that. many people do it in normal life), all other are almost exact copy. Koshish one may be called inspired but that is going to happen when you have someone with hearing disability. Thanks for sharing. Haven’t seen any Charlie Chaplin movies since I was 10-12 year old kid.

Agree that it happens in real life but they still copied the scene with Rupa Ganguly driving the daughter and pointing to the man and the dialogues.

“Haven’t seen any Charlie Chaplin movies since I was 10-12 year old kid.”

      Me neither.

      • hithere 11 years ago

I am still not sold on music from Amelie part. It still sounds inspired but not from above. Though the instruments are similar.

      • Sameer 11 years ago

I completely agree that the ‘Rupa Ganguly and Ileana drove to wood factory” scene and “Old Ranbir and Jhilmil sleeping togethre in hospital bed” scenes have been copied from The Notebook. Dont know about other scenes.

But, Anurag Basu had also copied/got inspired from The Constant Gardener music, which he had used in Life in a METRO- that African song made by ayub oguda…uumah, puinja..conspiro (that instrument)..if you listen you can guess..in background score of Metro..

But, its ok. we are all nowdays so much into Hollywood. so do the directors…
Hota hai…but they should give credits or some mention..bcoz world has become very small. so people get to know instantly if something is not original…..

        • Alag 11 years ago

Metro itself is a complete copy of the Jack Lemmon movie, ‘The Apartment’.
This Anurag Basu is a clever plagiarist who thinks that copying 60’s or Silent era Hollywood films will go unnoticed. In that sense, he joins other con artistes like Kamal Hassan and Mani Ratnam who use the same ploy without ever acknowledging.
Why this matters? It matters hugely for self respecting Indians who believe there is enough creativity in us to do things without plagiarizing. And if we do, atleast have the courtesy of acknowleding or thanking the original creator for it. Is that too much to expect?

    • Ashutosh 11 years ago

Don’t worry, Charlie Chaplin has not made any new movies since you were 10-12 years old. So you haven’t missed anything.

Very Good Post Sputnik… Except Koshish and Amelie (I have seen only 15 mins of amelie), all those scenes just bangs your head or you realize that you have seen such scenes before including the one where priyanka comes running behind ranbir after he leaves her at maids place, then trying to grab attention of priyanka with mirror light, throwing shoes as an indication, friendship test with cutting of street light etc… are all copied from various films and I can’t remember whether they are from hw or south indian films but they are all rip off’s but still with all such rip off’s i loved the movie…

    • KP 7 years ago

      Hey FS,

The throwing shoe film is that of Adoor Gopalkrishnan and Mammoothy.

Gr8 blog. I love it when plagiarisers get humiliated. One suggestion, change the title… these are not inspired scenes…its blatant plagiarism.
I wonder how u collated all the plagiarised content …coincidence of u watching all these clips or an insider from Barfi production!
Anyway Tanqeed will be credited for this work in Plagiariser Humiliation Page in fb.
This reminds me 3 idiots which again is an assortment of plagiarised content from youtube. Do u hav a similar post for tht film?

    • Author
      sputnik 11 years ago

I have used both inspired as well as copied in the title. Its up to others to decide whether it is inspired or copied.

I am no insider from Barfi team. I had seen Notebook and Koshish way before but for the other scenes I had to search on youtube.

I don’t have a similar post for 3 Idiots but now that this post is a big hit may be I should start doing it for more movies.

    • Virajas 11 years ago

When you decide to take a concept of a scene and work it into your story-line, we say that sequence has been inspired by the original matter. When you do the scene in your film, without even a slight change in how it plays out, down to the last action, and don’t even acknowledge the source, that is copying… ripping off, actually.

Slightly off topic but this is funny.

“Director files case against viewers for movie piracy. Viewers get foreign director to sue him for copying from his film”

“Friends and supporters of the 30,000 Malayalis against whom cases were registered for downloading Bachelor Party, have launched a counter-attack in the social media against the film’s director Amal Neerad and crew.

Bachelor Party was a box office failure, but has been making headlines in the last few days after Agent Jadoo, an anti-piracy software, tracked down 30,000-odd internet users who illegally downloaded the movie uploaded on YouTube.

The film was facing the brunt of theft allegations by Facebook users since its release.

After the police raid, netizens approached Hong Kong director Johnie To, to get him to file a complaint against Malayalam director Amal Neerad for allegedly reproducing the scenes and concept from his acclaimed film Fong Juk (Exiled) in Bachelor Party.

The director’s Facebook page is full of complaints made by the Keralites aggrieved by the police action.

This pubic protest is likely to switch the focus from the piracy issue to an even graver issue of ‘intellectual property theft’.

Nishad Masood of Kannur posted, β€œDear sir, Kerala(India) Police is hunting people, especially students who downloaded the Malayalam Bachelor Party from YouTube which is alleged to be the remake/copy of your film. All of us are eagerly waiting to know your stand as the story of the said film is allegedly a stolen film of you.

“Already police filed cases against 30,000 people and brutally torturing the viewers. Cant you file a case against Mr. Amal Neerad who’s the director of the movie?”

Both the movies have uncanny resemblances in the plot and many scenes are identical. Even the climax scenes and Prithviraj’s cameo are also similar to Fong Juk.

The police raid and the subsequent police cases have created a buzz in the social media and many jokes are also doing rounds. The popular one is, ‘It’s not fair to get punished for watching a film twice’.”

Good find Sputnik. Didnt see the movie but the music part and the trailer (chaplin) is same.

Btw, Ranbir had denied that the “characters” are blindly copied.before movie release – he mentioned Raj Kapoor, Chaplin , Mr Bean and Roberto Benigni (hope I heard it right ) at 1:58 below.

    https://broadband.glamsham.com/barfi/barfi-characters-are-original-not-copied-says-ranbir-video_413be9cb0.html

He said “characters” not scenes. πŸ˜‰

The music part is definitely copy. btw this is what Wiki says about the Original tracks on Amelie:

“Tiersen is often mistaken as a composer of soundtracks, himself saying “I’m not a composer and I really don’t have a classical background”,[3] but his real focus is on touring and studio albums which just happen to often be suitable for film. His most famous soundtrack for the film AmΓ©lie was primarily made up of tracks taken from his first two studio albums.”

Thanks for doing this… I was shocked by overwhelmingly positive reviews of this film… Not a bad film per se, but simply not original enough… If there are one or two scenes you can pass them as tributes… but if it happens scene after scene, it is simply not honest enough…

    • mppj 11 years ago

Yes this questions the credibility of these so-called critics … most of them hailed it as the best thing that ever happened to Indian cinema ..and I am baffled as to why no one is changing their opinion now? These critics just want to prove their verdict right and nothing else!

      • Baba Ji 11 years ago

I get the sense that most critics are as egoist as the trade guys. If a trade guy predicts the film to do well,he will try to cover its underperformance by all kinds of excuses.same for these critics. Now they will defend their ratings saying its a “good” copy.

More important thing here : Basu has clearly outwitted all critics. He is far more versed with international films that these wannabe critics can even dream of.I believe this is the reason why film industry ppl dont have any respect for these critics. They know these ppl aint got shit! πŸ˜€

        • mppj 11 years ago

          @Baba ji
True.. this time they caught them red-handed LOL .. The best part was the movie was screened to the critics on wed before public coz they knew critics r gonna go gaga over it and influence the general opinion of the public .. it was a well-made movie keeping all the critics opinions in mind and they got what they wanted out of them .. FANTASTIC REVIEWS even before public could comprehend or make an opinion abt the movie on their own… hats off to Mr Basu ..he seems to know how to push the right buttons when it comes to critics… I was more baffled bcoz all these ppl who pan everything tht Pritam does accepted Barfi music so openly without any complaints .. I admit its a good score.. but so were Cocktail, love Aaj kal and Jab We Met!

    @mppj,

“coz they knew critics r gonna go gaga over it and influence the general opinion of the public”

No Critic TILL DATE has been able to Influence My Opinion on A Movie…And I Mean it…No Effin’ Critic can Influence My View!

Yes, I Refer to them, See their Ratings and Stuff but that does Not Impact My POV.

So, I can’t Understand how a General Audience can be Sooo Easily Fooled by Some *20 Glowing Reviews* to go and Spend in Excess of 80cr+ for a Movie[A Complete ZNMD Case].

“I admit its a good score.. but so were Cocktail,LAK and Jab We MeT”

I take back all my affection, admiration, near-gushing post-views (in my role of a self appointed ‘Barfi’ promoter). Anyone with even a cursory knowledge of cinema could see the overt Chaplinesque effect. But that one allowed & indulged ‘coz Chaplin is a metaphor of cinema. How inventively & non-liftingly Raj Kapoor used him. But this copy paste job from films down the screen-years is heart-breaking & a sacrilege. Give me back my money.

but u gotta give credit to Anurag Basu for picking up from so many different sources and putting together to make 1 beautiful film

  46. autumn.frost 11 years ago

Well, to be really honest the post is really enlightening. I’m actually amazed to see how Anurag Basu picked up so many scenes from innumerable places and moulded it into something which I felt was quite good. (I mean, come on! Nakal ke liye bhi akal chahiye..and Basu put it in a great way).

Having seen the domain name, I shall not refrain myself from quoting Oscar Wilde that it takes a higher form of intellect to judge any form of art. Criticism outside of any creation is absolutely abominable. “Mediocrity
weighing mediocrity in the balance, and incompetence applauding its
    brother! ”

I don’t understand why we fail to appreciate any good thing which may or may not be true to its very being.
So, to all the folks criticizing the “plagiarism” you may read this—
β€œNothing is original. Steal from anywhere that resonates with inspiration or fuels your imagination. Devour old films, new films, music, books, paintings, photographs, poems, dreams, random conversations, architecture, bridges, street signs, trees, clouds, bodies of water, light and shadows. Select only things to steal from that speak directly to your soul. If you do this, your work (and theft) will be authentic. Authenticity is invaluable; originality is non-existent. And don’t bother concealing your thievery – celebrate it if you feel like it. In any case, always remember what Jean-Luc Godard said: β€œIt’s not where you take things from – it’s where you take them to.” – Jim Jarmusch

Hello, this movie is over appreciated everywhere else. Only a minority of people, most of them on this blog and elsewhere are the one criticizing, so you’re right about everything you said but in the exact opposite direction, only thing is your fanboyism isn’t letting you look in the right direction.

    • I.One 11 years ago

      autumn, I agree we shouldn’t.

Real problem lies when highly rated critics give a master-piece title to something which is inspired/copied. There is more grave a problem when you see that such a movie is India’s entry for Oscars!

I loved the movie.. In spite of knowing a few scenes which were inspired (copied) ..
But now, after getting to know all these- so many ‘inspirations’ – I need to see it one more time..
But well ….. copying beautifully and in right references, is also an Art.
Thank you for this amazing Post
Will look forward to more of this kind!

    @Sputnik,

Congratulations! This is a huge! Unprecedented for a blog of this nature I think.

On the post, I will not comment as I haven’t seen Barfi and wish to experience it first before I watch the videos.

But on what this post has achieved- HAT’S OFF! The debate that it has caused, the visibility it has achieved- it has made it to the mainstream media! Gosh you have exemplified the power of the pen!

And more than anything else, it shows your persistence and your belief/passion. Frankly initially I thought this blog would become a poor copy of naachgaana.com. But what you have achieved this blog is just amazing.

It is the best hindi-movie blog currently and 90% is because of you only. A true one-man show.

      Thanks Piyush for your compliments.

And good to see you here. I did not expect that it will become so huge either. As FS said it shows original posts are much more appreciated.

Since it is a new blog I have to put in double the hard work – that’s kind of expected. But FS, Baba, Milind, cr7, aryan and others have also made some very good posts and Ritz, hithere, suprabh, reddemon, serenzy and many others (sorry if I am forgetting names) have contributed with their comments regularly.

The best thing is that I have not had to to moderate much. I thank everyone here for keeping it civil.

      • dwnpiyush 11 years ago

Of course, others do post here- and I read almost all of them when time permits. When I say that it’s a one-man show I mean the manner you keep it all together- and get all the posts aligned with how the blog is meant to be.

And the fact that most of it is civil, again says something about how you run this blog.

I visit the blog daily (so in that sense I am here as an invisible bot many a times πŸ™‚ )

        Cheers!

the more i read through this post, the more scenes are copied. The original post was fine but then the more viewers identified scenes in the comments, i think in days to come we will find out that Barfi is 100% copied scenes. No originality.

  60. hemant 11 years ago

I have a lot to say against the film. Not because I have a personal vengeance but simply because I hate any kind of hypocrisy, especially when it comes to art/cinema because it is very personal to me. Big budget mindless crappy films never hide behind the veil of ‘sensible cinema’ which I respect even if I don’t agree with its sensibilities but the cinema which projects itself to be sensible and artistic and then copies every good scene from everywhere possible. Not only this, here are few big flaws that film makers didn’t bother to pay attention to:
    1. Script. They got too excited with the germ of an idea and then forgot to actually work on a story. There is nothing I take back home. The story starts dragging from the start. Barring few scenes which were lifted from Charlie Chaplin’s brilliant work, there was nothing worthwhile. No story, nothing.
    2. Acting. When an actor is playing a character who is much older than the actor, he/she has to work on body language, voice, expressions which ofcourse is of no concern to Indian actors. Except Ranbir Kapoor no one has worked on their character.
    3. Direction was a big let down. But when almost all important scenes are inspired from multiple films director can only copy them well. The director failed to do even that.
    4. A central character should grow on other characters in the film along with the audiences. Instead the director solved the problem by saying it in a line. It is cinema, if you want me to fall in love with your character then make me do it don’t tell me to feel a certain way about him/her.
    5. Make-up- I couldn’t help but smile every time Ileana D’cruz appeared on screen in an old woman’s get up. No I didn’t find her cute, I was taken-a-back by the shoddy job of the make-up artist. Old people usually do not have such thick hair, they usually have wrinkles on their faces (unlike Priyanka Chopra’s face which was devoid of any sign of aging, maybe she used Pond’s Anti-Age Miracle).
    6. I like the music of the film. Though the background score is almost a complete lift from Amelie. But once again I would say that I like the songs.
    7. The end was crappy. The director could have redeemed himself by at least working on the end of the film. The end was so cliche that maybe it stopped being cliche for the film makers and audiences alike.
I admire all efforts and I know it is easy to sit back and criticize but I would like to point out that if we don’t criticize ourselves for the right things we would never improve. I have liked almost all the films of Ranbir barring few and I hoped he had made the right decision with this film. I don’t want to compare but there has been some really good cinema from Indian Film Industry so don’t push it back to the talentless, big banner cinema which doesn’t do anything for individuals or society at large. Cinema is for entertainment and social relevance, all at the same time. It is not either, or. It is both.
This is my personal opinion and if people like the film and they chose to overlook certain things then that is the kind of society we would build. There is no good or bad but the choices we make, the decisions we take have an impact on our lives.
Congratulations to the team behind Barfi for the commercial success of the film. Cheers!

and after watching BARFI I was somewhere doubtful that all these collage of scenes cant be original which you proved very well in a brilliant manner.

Thanks. Just read your Life in a Metro post.

The Sharman Joshi track was definitely inspired/copied from The Apartment. But What’s interesting is this.

The director of The Apartment is supposed to have made the movie inspired by a small character from Brief Encounter – the friend who shows up at his apartment.

So Anurag copied a scene from Brief Encounter as well as The Apartment. He also copied a scene from For Love or Money which is also inspired from The Apartment. So may be he was doing homage/tribute by copying from movies which are related. Incidentally For Love or Money is supposed to be the inspiration for Yes Boss.

      @Ritz,

Do you know if this song is based on some raaga or folk tune?

      • Vipin 11 years ago

The fact that the man has a history in plagiarism doesn’t mean you take even the remotest instance of similarity and use that a base for plagiarism. The similarity in this case with Phir Le Aaya Dil ends in that opening line, so can’t you just let it go? Solid cases are welcome, like the scenes above, but there should be some baseline.

        • Author
          sputnik 11 years ago

Its the same tune and it plays throughout the song and I was asking Ritz because he is is more knowledgeable about raagas to see if it is an old raaga or a folk tune to give the benefit of doubt to Pritam.

As for the singers thing that has been used in many films (There’s something about Mary is the first time I saw that and mentioned by hithere) and hence I did not respond.

Its not a competition on whose copying whom. Its about the film being represented for Oscars when most of its scenes and characters are blatantly copied back to back and hardly any credit given for its inspiration or whatever. Sadly, the quality and its authenticity of our Cinemas will always be doubted by foreigners with films such as these.
Moreover,I bet none of Quentin’s movies are nominated for Oscar.

hahahahahhahahahahaahahahahah let me laugh b4 i say anything πŸ™‚

Anurag Basu , the Bluffmaster ,the one who fooled the indian audiences (most of whom are already fools) , the dumb critics and the Film Federation Of India , who dnt knw wht dafuq real cinema is (they were actually sending
“PLAYERS -go for gold” but then changed their minds).
Basu robbed people of their money and wrote a big “C” on their foreheads (thank god i didnt watch this “C”rap film).
and by sending it for Oscars, Film fed. has clearly asked for a worldwide bezatti of indian cinema.
how can they choose a movie with so many copied scenes , how rubbish-kiddish is that, clearly shows the selection was rigged.
GOW is the strongest and the most original Indian movie ever made , it deserved to go , specially after being selected at Cannes.it was our best n strongest chance to show what Indian filmmakers are capable of , and Film fed. ruined it.
Seriously ,” if they don’t have the basic intelligence to send a great movie like GOW to Oscars ,
they will never ever win an Oscar”

    • Dev 11 years ago

First of all, I’m happy to see I’m not the only one who’s furious because Barfi got selected for the Oscars. πŸ™‚

I would’ve chosen any film from these three.. GOW1, GOW2 and Paan Singh Tomar. The only possible reason I can think of why Barfi got chosen ahead of these movies is because our govt has a direct influence over selection. Their selection criteria is not based upon cinematic brilliance, but upon political influence.

In Paan Singh Tomar, it was a story of an athlete, who becomes a rebel because of injustice and ill treatment caused to him by the society and ignites a crusade. With dialogues like “Beehad mein to sirf baagi hotey hain.. chor to parliament mein hotey hain.” and “Sarkar toh chor hai sahab!” don’t expect our govt to select such films.

In case of GOW too, there were elements of lawlessness, violence, ugly truths of politics were shown in the film, which automatically cancels all the possibilities of its selection by the govt.

People in the selection board will never select anything which (according to them that is) portrays a bad image of the country in front of the world audience. You can refer to all their previous year’s selection. All were ‘safe’ films.

The tragedy we face, as lovers of the ‘real’ cinema, is that there will be more n more films like Barfi, Jism, Raaz coming each year, films which will eventually get selected for Oscars too.

There is a reason why directors like Mr Shekhar Kapur stopped making films. If you can recall what sensor board did to his film Bandit Queen.. they edited several scenes from the film (even after giving it an ‘A’ certificate) that Mr Kapur had said after watching the final print –“I didn’t make this film.. This is not a Shekhar Kapur film. ”

So my friend all we can do is wait.. wait for another masterpiece.. hoping they don’t stop making classics.. films that I call ‘cinema’. and we can also hope that somehow such films get selected as official entry into the Oscars.. and wins there too!

And when that happens, I’ll drink some shots remembering you all !!! πŸ™‚
      Cheers!!!

Apparently this is the rumoured storyline of Talaash-Aamir khan has his son die in an accident for which he considers himself responsible. as a result he develops a psychological condition (schizophrenia, bi-polar disorder, or Alzheimer’s disease). He kills all these people at the same spot his son died due to his condition, but then forgets or doesn’t wanna remember what he did. He is also a police officer in charge of investigating all these crimes/accidents. As a result he goes on a search for answers to know why so many people die in apparent car accidents at the same place. Cause he has a psychological condition, he also imagines stuff, thus Kareena being a figment of his imagination. Eventually he finds out that he is the killer and his Talaash and the movie ends and probably he dies.

There are two problem i find with movies such as barfi. They are probably well done (i have watched it) but people react to it saying that they love it and then they will go to any extremes to defend it. sad. yet true…. however my bigger problem is that a ‘inspired’ ‘paying tribute movie’ like barfi is nominated to oscars and not an orginal movie/theme like Gangs of wasseypur or any other regional movie actually…

PLAGIARISM IS PLAGIARISM—BE IT FOR 15 MINS OF THE MOVIE OR 150 MINS. IF YOU DO NOT CREDIT ORIGINAL MATERIAL, OR SAY THAT THIS MOVIE IS A HOMAGE TO CHARLIE CHAPLIN, AMELIE, ETC., THEN THE DIRECTOR HAS BEHAVED UNETHICALLY.

Of course, he does not care what someone like me has to say. His movie is a commercial success and Bollywood (also a copied name) will continue to operate the same way.

  79. AlphaBravo 11 years ago

P.S. Tarentino copies the style and visual effects, that too subtly. He does not copy-paste entire scenes. Hence the difference. I hope Barfi does NOT win a Oscar or any accolades. Despite being a decent film, a film such as Barfi which contain art and idea theft must be discouraged. Original ideas such as GoW and Paan Singh Tomar must be given more support.

listen everyone the issue in not if the film is a good film or not…the issue is should it be the oscar film when there r other films that are equally good….do u think barfi has any chance at oscars…do u think judges there will not correlate the scenes…so why not send something that has a fair chance…and by the way even life in a metro is a straight of 4 films…so is murder actually…so actually gangster….u guys a bunch of idiots to think that is our answer this year for oscars….

  84. DA 11 years ago

My contribution to the list. The scene where Barfi is found sleeping on a covered statue, is a direct lift for Charlie Chaplin’s Modern Times.

  85. Indradeep Das 11 years ago

I wonder how some people are, who before getting engulfed in the sheer joy of a beautiful compostition , starts finding sources from where similarity in scenes, of any extent, were taken. Guys, try to understand art.. if someone paints a picture observing a photo.. thats not “plagiarism”.. if someone captured a nature pic, already taken by sum1 b4.. that nt plagiarism.. y cant u ppl abstain from raising such foolish hue n cry n enjoy some moments? So wat if Ranbir kapur does a Chaplin act in film, does that look bad? u wanna say, barfi would have been different had these scenes were not there? grow up kids, 3,4 scenes doesnt define a movie, rather the storyline does.. its like u being questioned on academic grounds, like the exams u passed, if in all those exams u were helped by a 1 mark MCQ by anyone in a 100 marks paper.. does that dilute ur credentials? i guess not.. n by d way, have u ever researched on “Hollywood” movies who cheats from Italian or Spanish old/regional movies? wats ur take on that? Dont disgrace a big good for a small bad..

    • Dev 11 years ago

      Really???
Friend, don’t try to defend a film just because you liked it. And you liked it coz you were unaware of the fact that this film is a ripoff.. not from just one film but several successful films from all over the world.

Not just some funny scenes, they’ve taken pieces of plot from ‘Gone baby gone’ and other films.
This post is putting the truth in front of you.. whether you are ready to take it or not its your choice.
The Churches at Vatican were against the modern scientists like Charles Darvin because scientists discovered that humans were evolved from apes, which puts in question the writings of the holy Bible.

And before telling anybody to do a research I suggest you to watch a few films, films that were in foreign language that actually won Oscars in the category for which Barfi is chosen!

      1. The Bicycle Thieves: An Italian film of 1948. A simple story of a poor man trying hard to earn a living. A film that many believe to be ‘The Best Film Ever Made.’

      2. Children of Heaven: A beautiful Iranian film. Again a simple story full of emotions.

      3. Life Is Beautiful: An Italian film about the holocaust, shows us the importance of family.. and to what lengths a person has to go to save his family.

      4. The Intouchables: A French entry into the Oscars, story of a paralyzed man and his caretaker and the bond they share. (if u shed a tear watching Barfi, then you will cry bucketful of tears watching this film)

Now after watching these films plz ask yourself this question “Is Barfi worthy enough of being included in a category in which these classics belong?”

And you’re saying copying 3-4 scenes is no big deal? Dude, if I copy n paste 3-4 lines from your comment and post them here again, you will accuse me of plagiarism!! πŸ™‚

Then please think of the original people from whom these so called bollywood big shots copy mercilessly.

      Cheers!!! πŸ™‚

The basic concepts of all the movies are copied…Since barfi is totally different, so u want to point out and try to pull it down, I am deaf and after a long time , finally i saw the movie that sound similiar like mine…does that mean it is copied from me? i would be happy if people copy me and show to the world , how deaf and autism works out in real life! Why do u have do it? u have lost the credibility of respect….sad but true!

    • Arnab Tumpy Bhattacharya 11 years ago

Your point of view is also true… In this universe nothing is original..every form of art is an inspiration of some form..just one should ensure it doesn’t look like a blatant rip-off.. Coming back to Barfi even though few scenes are copied the emotions are original & the final outcome is heartwarming….

  88. Arnab Tumpy Bhattacharya 11 years ago

Exhausted after reading all the comments and views….
Even thought I could figure out the plagiarized or inspired parts in the film seriously speaking I liked the film..not that i would go all the way to defend it against criticism..As a film i find it likeable enough…
now is this the right choice for Oscar?? Well even it wouldn’t have been partly plagiarized, my 1st Choice would have been GANGS OF WASSEYPUR – that’s one is simply brilliant..
And as GOW has received tremendous appreciation at various films festivals like Cannes,Sydney,NYFF etc it thus shows international movie goers (and critics) liking for the film….

Man what insight in to the world of cinema……personally i liked Barfi but felt somewhat let down after knowing about exact scene liftings from a bunch of movies across the globe…..if this was common knowledge, it should have never been sent to the Oscars…..In fact i whole heartedly agree with some bloggers that GOW should have ideally gone as India’s entry to the Oscars as i am of the view that it would have sure shot got the Oscar…….GOW makers got left high and dry…..too bad a state of affairs in our country….dunno when the rot in our system will stop

    • Ritz 11 years ago

      @ZeeBee,

Forget abt the movies around the globe, have u heard of a Indian movie called “Deool”?
Why was it not sent to Oscars?

To all the hypocrites and over smart human beings,
Unless you would have known or watched the films from where some scenes have been inspired you would not have been babbling so much. I have not seen most of these. Anyways Barfi’s story was completely original and it was a great love story. Without going into any comparisons the cinematography and photography were outstanding as well. Can’t you guys be proud of anything “Made in India”. If you are given the camera I bet you won’t be able to produce even a 10 min meaningful movie. It is not as easy as it looks.

Nice. Sput (dear :-)), good to see that we have a non star based movie forum….finally! Will look forward to many more original articles.

Having said that, let me make a case for ranbir here. He is absolutely endearing and charming in this movie and the movie is a well made movie. As someone pointed out, if basu is claiming it’s fully original work…well he seems a little bit of a loudmouth. Look at his toi interview where he takes unnecessary digs at rakesh roshan for kites. Being graceful in success seems a thing of the past. Save for a vidya balan or a salman( ughh.. :-)), no one seems to be able to handle success with grace.

    Awesome Sputnik!!! Take a bow!
    This is really great…
Even though I did not know that so many scenes were lifted except for the scenes from “the notebook” and “singing in the rain” , while watching the movie, I was not drawn much to the characters or the story as much as the other audience in the theater … To me I felt Ranbir was overacting and the feeling of Ranbir’s so called “innocence” looked very unnatural .it was like being shoved into the audience face to feel it.
Also I would like to mention that the movie reminded of kamal hassan’s “swati mutyam” and “Sadma” .
note that, kamal play’s an autistic in “swati mutyam” …he underplays the character so well that u really yearn for the character. Also Sridevi who plays as an autistic in “Sadma”, was brilliant… Ranbir looking after Priyanka chopra was similar to kamal taking care of sridevi in” sadma”

Congrats Sputnik! It was coming. Your knowledge of cinema has been recognised by many now. Way to go!

Regarding Burfi!, well I was amused at the verdicts of critics and some fans that it is one of the best cinema to come out of India. But the real shocker was Oscar entry! Doesn’t it present India as having juries who sent their movies for Oscars which have innumerable lifts from other movies. Deool, such a fantastic cinema was not recognised at all. Clearly the jury needs a class or two from Sputnik.

  107. YoY?? 11 years ago

To all those folks justifying lame copying as inspiration, if the Director had truly meant those scenes to inpire him, he would have given credit to the creators. Guess they thought “Purane or non English filmo se utha lenge toh kisiko pata nahi chalega”. The Bollywood directors very well know what works with the Indian crowd. A love story, few songs, some nice juicy emotional moments and a moment of redemption at the end. Using this formula, they want to take us for a ride expecting us to leave every bit of our common sense behind. Plot me logic nahi hai toh bhi theek hai, At least keep it original yaar, Watch few movies like “The Lives of Others” or “The Separation” which have won the Oscar award in the Foreign Film category and then judge for yourselves if this film would be cutting a sorry figure with this blatant plagiarism.

Anurag Basu is a GENIUS! A genius in the ‘Copy & Paste’ technique, that is. Really, hats off to the guy for:
    1. Cutting and pasting so well that it passes off a a ‘great’ movie.

    2. Doing so much research- he would have had to sit through so many films – can you imagine how much hard work he has put in to select the right scenes from more than 10 films so that when joined together, they form a smooth and slick film?

    3. Using disability in a crude and ‘nautanki’ manner so that the audience is hooked and the box office tills keep ringing

    4. Hiding behind ‘inspiration’and ‘homage’ to disguise blatant plagiarism

    5. His music director also being ‘inspired’ coincidentally

    6. Managing to fool 1.2 billion people, at least temporarily, into beleiving they were watching a masterpiece (some are getting quite militant in the comments below – bless)

    7. Duping the good souls who form the Oscar Selection Committee into choosing Barfi over truly great films like Paan Singh Tomar and Gangs of Wasseypur.

ANURAG BASU deserves the BHARAT RATNA !!!

Profound revelation! In today world of Internet and Social Media, if popularity travels fast then unpopularity too. So, the big shots sud watch out b4 they think of raking the moolah. I was so damn impressed by the movie although Anurag Basu faced KITES wrath from the public…and also after noticing 2 scenes are total lift off from The Notebook, this is seriously disappointing!

Good directors dont copy. And more shameless are the juries who decide this movie sud go to the Oscars. “Paan Singh Tomar” is the right replacement for me. If movies with public demand or box-office grossers won Oscars then Ek Tha Tigers, Bodyguards and Rowdy Rathores wud have been winning Best Academy Award in Foreign Language.

For all Nolan,Tarantino,Scorsese n Anurag Kashyaps….this post has list of the 19 selected movie…now u decide which one you will select for the Oscar….I don’t doubt your movie making skills as i have already gone through all your comments & i’m damn sure you all must have made some short films or movies in your successful film career with a “keyboard”…..one thing for sure you guys should get an Oscar for research….

    Here is the list –

VAZHAKKU ENN 18/9 – Brilliant camerawork, superb presentation…perfect movie in all creative aspects of movie making but common storyline.

7aum Arivu – Good Action Movie with a concept of β€œAssassin’s Creed”(But we won’t call it Plagiarism, right??)

Akasathinte Niram –Nice message, impressive angles, nice acting but too much detailing ruin the speed of the story at some places may be I expected a lot from the makers of Veettilekkulla Vazhi.

Eega – outstanding performance by Sudeep, brilliant work done in VFX dept, totally enjoyable movie for all but wait a sec what a fabulous story line – One guys loves a girl, girl realizes her love for him little late meanwhile another rich guys loves her. He wants everything he likes so he kills the other guy…now the guy’s soul transmits into an unborn fly & revenge saga begins (Where is the logic?? Should we send a movie to Oscar just because it has some great VFX & entertaining common revenge theme???)

Heroine – Simple β€œlol” …..Why it’s there on the list???

Paan Singh Tomar – A real gem…..brilliant in every aspect of filmmaking Story, Screenplay, Direction, Acting…everything is picture perfect…. The script’s originality is the strongest point of the movie…..just one thing which might go against this film is that the viewer has to understand Our national issues – The caste system, how we treat our athletes (other than cricket of course)

Kahaani – Amazing thriller….This is what story-telling is all about….Brilliant script, outstanding performance…but again climax is little similar to Taking Lives…

GoW – part 1 & 2- As a Fan of Manoj Bajpai & Anurag Kashyap I liked it very Much. Same old revenge thriller with an interesting story of Islamic background & coal mafia. Stunning performance by Manoj bajpai,Nawaz n Richa Chadda. Music complements the feel of the movie. Direction is absolutely flawless…good camerawork…
2 things Might go against the movie
    1) Length (5hrs)
    2)Too many characters

Arjun – The Warrior Prince – Good Animation but same old Mahabharat style story….I just wonder when animation industry in India will give some more modern concepts…

Gattu – Making children’s film is not a simple thing but Gattu is winner in this class….Great storyline…delivers what it promises in just 82 minutes…but it’s not at all promoted in India…I wonder what would have happened when it comes to lobbying at Oscars

Jalpari – Little gem with a great message. Fascinating light play & cinematography, good direction but again very little promotion

The Dirty Picture- Too much bollywood. Gets too slow towards the end.

Ferrari Ki Sawari- Quite Simple Storyline with neat execution….Feel good movie….Great acting by Baman & Sharman. First half is little slow & story is not realistic.

Veer Hamirji – Somnath Ni Sakhate – first Gujarati movie to reach this far for Oscars. Don’t know much about the movie as it went off on the second week of screening.

Anhey Ghore Da Daan – Brilliant cinematography, great direction….Story shows the real India but again lacks promotion.

Deool- Umesh Kulkarni has done a fabulous job…his valu was good but this one has reached another height…clever storyline, good casting, good topic told elegantly through good acting ….Downside : The Item Song(absolutely unnecessary) & the audience must understand rural politics & commercialization of Holy Places.

The last one on the list is Barfi…
Since uou guys have researched so much about the negative points of the movie so we can overshadow the storyline & execution of the movie the lighting, Art direction, Ravi varman’s cinematography & many other point jus cause of some 10-15mins long copied scenes.

Now I want people to comment by judging the other entries btw if you guys have some homemade footage or movie masterpiece then please upload it or find some producer so that your film could get a place in next year’s list…..

Please don’t come up with arguments that one has to make a movie to criticize a movie. You may not have heard the quote “Although I cannot lay an egg, I am a very good judge of omelettes”. Turning your own argument on to you, you have no right to criticize this post until you first make a post of Inspired/Copied scenes for a movie. Can you see the fallacy of your argument now?

You are mocking others for criticizing Barfi and then giving out your expert comments on the movies considered for Oscars? What made you the expert? Did you make any movies to do a LOL on Heroine?

You and some others are saying its only 15 minutes of copied scenes. When I started the post it was even less and people kept adding to it so much that I now think there is not a single original scene in the movie. If no one had added inspirations in the comments section people like you would have said the clock scene or the nail scene were so good – that’s original. Its just that we don’t know where the rest of the scenes are copied from till someone finds out and points it out.

Anurag said that he had a picture of Charlie Chaplin in one scene so that can qualify as homage/tribute but was he paying tribute to The Notebook and Korean movies too?

Now some are saying the plot is original – wrong again. The plot is a mixture of The Notebook with minor changes (mute and deaf guy instead of poor guy, girl has a fiance from before instead of later, girl comes back after marriage instead of before marriage but they don’t end up together), Sympathy for Mr.Vengeance (plot of kidnapping for relative), Oasis (mute and deaf guy instead of mildly mentally disabled man and woman with severe cerebral palsy replaced by whatever Priyanka was playing) and may be more.

Of the movies mentioned in your comment I have only seen Kahaani and PST. I think PST would have been a better choice. As for Barfi I don’t think it has any chance whatsoever even if it was completely original.

IBNLive has another article on Barfi.

‘Barfi’: The thin line between inspiration and plagiarism

“The cinema blog Tanqeed was the first to spot the obvious sources of influence. This is the story we wrote at the time of release of Barfi. The Mumbai Mirror followed up with names of more films from the open discussions on various forums, including that of Tanqeed’s.

The list of films Tanqeed and Mumbai Mirror claimed ‘Barfi’ is sourced from is quite long and disturbing. Scenes were said to be either lifted from or influenced by Kikujiro, Benny & Joon (1993), Korean film Oasis (2002), Chaplin’s City Lights (1931), Mr Bean’s Holiday, Jackie Chan’s Project A (1983), Buster Keaton’s Cops (1922), The Notebook (2004), Mr Nobody (2009), Black Cat, White Cat (1988), The Goonies (1985) and Fried Green Tomatoes (1991). ”

We weren’t paid to pick ‘Barfi’, says Oscar selection committee chief Manju Borah

‘Assamese filmmaker Manju Borah, who headed the committee entrusted with selecting India’s official entry to the Academy Awards, said she is tired of defending ‘Barfi’, the jury’s choice this year, and angry that her credibility is being questioned. The film is now under scrutiny because of charges of plagiarism but Borah said the 11-member jury was entirely justified in picking ‘Barfi’.

“I lost my temper that day when someone asked me if we were paid for this (the selection exercise). Can you imagine? No, we weren’t paid for this. We are all professionals. I left behind my work for 10 days to be on the selection committee. It’s part of my duty,” she said.

When told that Basu has been accused by bloggers and film critics of directly lifting scenes from several films, Borah said it is common among filmmakers to be influenced by the works of talented colleagues.

“Anurag Basu is a creative person and he should be honest to himself. There is nothing wrong in being influenced by great filmmakers. Many directors before him have been. Our issue was only to select the best film and Ranbir Kapoor portrayed ‘Barfi’ so well with his Chaplinesque act,” Borah said. Most of the jury members were apparently moved when they saw ‘Barfi’.

“If you are asking me why we chose Barfi, I’ll tell you – something stayed in your heart even after the film was over.”

At the time of selection the jury spotted the references to the silent era films – the obvious ones of Chaplin and Buster Keaton – but they hadn’t thought Barfi was copied from other films, Borah said.

“The subject of Barfi is so depressing, dealing with disability. But the film wasn’t depressing at all. It was celebrating life. At that time, that was what we were considering. If you see a film later, you will see it critically. You will spot weak points,” she said.’

‘”Barfi deserves to be sent outside. The selection was a very open process with three to four rounds of severe discussions and came down to the best film of the final three,” she said without naming the other two serious contenders. Borah, herself a National award-winning filmmaker, said she was very clear about the issue of ethics. “I would never support plagiarism”, she said, but maintained that it was common among filmmakers to be influenced by the works of those better than them.

“We should not exploit or destroy the medium of filmmaking. We are one of the world’s largest film industry and we should make beautiful films with the human touch. See how the Iranian film industry has come up?” ‘

Anurag Basu and other Barfi fans have suddenly started using QT quotes and listing other movies which had copied or inspired bits.

I saw Anurag Basu interview on Headline news yesterday and he was using The Artist and Hugo for his defense. Hugo movie was based on the life of Georges Méliès and its obvious that the movie would have scenes from his movies. The Artist was a silent movie about silent movies and it is obvious that it would have scenes recreated from silent movies.

Barfi was not a silent movie nor was the movie about Charlie Chaplin/Buster Keaton. What about the scenes from Korean movies, The Notebook, Jackie Chan movie and so many others. Just because someone is mute and deaf others around him don’t stop talking. The movie is not a completely silent movie like Pushpak.

QT himself admits that he steals and mixes things. He mixes things and takes it somewhere else. Barfi did nothing of that. They just copied the scene as it is. Anurag did not take it anywhere.

This is like a kid who when caught cheating tries to prove that other kids have cheated too:)

There is a huge difference between copying and being inspired. Sholay is also inspired by Seven Samurai, but one would be hard put to identify scenes, subplots and characters that have just been lifted without any thought being put into it.

Whereas in Barfi we have entire scenes which have the same camera angles, the same shot composition, and even similar-looking locations and props used!

There is a huge online debate about how scenes in Barfi! have been lifted from various films. Some popular blogs like moifightclub.wordpress.com and tanqeed.com have even posted the original scenes and the similarities are apparent. The debate is whether you are paying homage to or are inspired by films like City of Lights and The Adventurers, or whether you have plagiarised them. What do you have to say to this?

Mahesh Manjrekar sounds flustered, resigned too. β€œIn the year of Astitva, they chose Jeans as the official Indian entry to the Oscars. It felt like a slap on my face then. At least Barfi! is better than Jeans.” Manjrekar’s unusual Marathi tale of amour, Kaksparsh, is one of the 19 films Barfi! beat in the race to Kodak Theatre, Los Angeles, as India’s official entry to the Oscars. And, as it happens every year, the choice has ruffled many feathers. Especially after a post on http://www.tanqeed.com detailing scene-by-scene lifts from foreign films went viral. The blatant plagiarisation apart, filmmakers are foxed over the entire process of selecting films for the Oscars, a modus operandi the industry itself seems ignorant about.

I don’t respond to movie blogs but this one inspired me to go watch the most spoken about movie of recent weeks. I want to see if the flip side of this plagiarism situation makes any sense to us all. The following is not an argument of rights and wrong. The intention here is to share my thoughts on certain concepts of inspiration, homage, memory, art and critical appraisal. An attempt to find out what miffed the audiences and critics alike after being in love with the film for 2 weeks?

Barfi!, a deaf-mute guy falling in love twice. The things he does and the people he meets were all story elements, which came in as natural happening to the characters’ world. I did not find the decision to have the protagonist act like the silent film actors a radical one. If one watches closely, Chaplin, Keaton, Lloyd & Co. could all very well be mute. That is simple and direct inspiration.

Inspiration can creep into your door and you might not even know it. If one keeps her mind open to the elements, inspiration won’t be hard to find. The creative minds were probably open and willing in the years when they saw City Lights, The Kid and Safety Last. Every artist has lived certain years and dreamt certain dreams of emulating the supremacy displayed by the masters of their craft. To be able to bring the masters’ strokes back into something one creates is just pure bliss.

The Artist was made purely on inspiration and as a grand homage to the silent era of western cinema. There are sources (https://blogs.indiewire.com/spout/10-movies-to-see-instead-of-the-artist) to inform us (https://www.indiewire.com/article/the-artist-director-michel-hazanavicius-on-the-films-that-inspired-him) about where these inspirations came from and how they have been seamlessly incorporated into the modern era academy award winning experimental movie. The portions that some cinephiles have been able to recognize in Barfi! from movies of the silent era should have rather excited them to no end, just as it excited me to see an old favorite sequence in a new movie!

These homages were not necessary evils. The story of Barfi! would have moved on even without the sequences from the great films of previous times. And the story is original. The great times of the past are the reason why we are able to produce work of some worth. I would invite you to watch Everything Is A Remix (https://www.everythingisaremix.info/watch-the-series/) by Kirby Ferguson to understand how we all create but only the consumer can make something great or not so great.

There is a scene in Barfi! where the second-female protagonists’ Shruti’s mother convinces her out of love by showing the failed love of her own youth. Another character in another movie does just the same. But so would have any mother of the same thought. The difference is the effect such a conversation has on the audience of this story. The same circumstance in another story would have moved you differently. The intertextuality of a situation depicted in different stories is the difference. Mr. Austin Kleon says something similar in his book regarding the same subject- Steal Like An Artist (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oww7oB9rjgw). Quite a cheeky title that!

Jim Jarmusch had advised, “Nothing is original. Authenticity is invaluable. Originality is non-existent. And don’t bother concealing your thievery – celebrate it if you feel like it. In any case, always remember what Jean-Luc Godard said, “It’s not where you take things from – it’s where you take them to”.

Disregarding what Ferguson, Kleon, Jarmusch and Godard say about getting inspired to use another artists’ work, I would still feel cheated that something I thought original and novel was just brought in frame to frame from another available and existing source. That makes these parts not-novel and unoriginal. I’d feel bad. But if I knew that there was Charlie Chaplin staring right at me after Barfi runs off the statue and over the crowd, I’d be prepared to see a lot more of Chaplin through the film. Maybe not as the cut-out every time but at least as emulation. I’m just saying these things to feel better about a movie I thoroughly enjoyed and don’t want to argue about how the stuff brought-in from elsewhere is just the icing and not the meat of the cake.

Creating a world for characters to grow in is an artists’ job. It should be noted anyhow, that the world one creates emerges from the vision of a world one envisions. Envisioning a world similar to one’s favorite is not stealing. It is reproducing from fond memories- reproduction of a space one had enjoyed being in. I love the world of the silent films. I bet you do too. Don’t you wish you could recreate it for yourself? These people were lucky enough to be afforded the opportunity.

The opportunity will present itself again if the consumers felt their expectations were satiated. Which is what the general perception was. The reward is successful entertainment. The reward is the next opportunity. The opportunity to tell another story. Just as this was a new story.

Lets make more movies, and lets keep talking about movies of the past and movies of the future!

    • Author
      sputnik 11 years ago

The Artist was a silent movie about the silent movies. So its obvious they will try to recreate scenes from silent movies. Barfi was neither a silent movie nor a movie about the silent movies. Just because Ranbir is mute others around him don’t stop talking. Charlie Chaplin can be passed off as homage/tribute because of the cutout but other scenes cannot.

I myself had posted Everything is Remix video in Iconic vs laughable post here as a comment. There are lot of articles saying QT plagiarizes and steals. QT copies by his own admission and mixes things. Anurag did no mixing – he just copied them as it is.

The Notebook defense is ridiculous. The mother driving her to a place pointing to a man and saying she comes down to see him everyday and all that is common. If that is so common tell me how many other movies have that same scene apart from The Notebook and Barfi? The point is he copied the scene as it is expecting that no one will find out. And Anurag even denied that he copied the scene when it is very obvious for anyone to see.

People like Mahesh Bhatt and Anu Malik used to be ridiculed in the past for copying/stealing. Now since some people have liked Barfi it has suddenly become all about homage/tribute and other nonsense. Poor Mahesh Bhatt and Anu Malik could not come up with the homage/tribute defense.

If the movie would have continued fine without those sequences according to you then why were they copied in the first place? That means the movie has a lot of unnecessary scenes in it which don’t fit in at all. And if those scenes are not required lets ask Anurag to delete every one of those copied scenes. Lets see how much of the movie still remains and will it still be as great for the people who liked it the first time?

If someone remade the movie Barfi in a regional language will UTV/Anurag say it is alright as the other director is paying homage/tribute and stand behind this “Nothing is Original” nonsense or would they sue in a court? There lies the answer.

    Controversy
Barfi was criticized by several viewers on social networking websites, such as Twitter, Facebookand YouTube for copying scenes from several world movies including Charlie Chaplin’s movies. Some movies the scenes were allegedly copied from Singin’ in the Rain, Kikujiro, Benny & Joon, Korean film Oasis, Lovers’ Concerto, Chaplin’s The Adventurer, City Lights, Mr Bean’s Holiday, Jackie Chan’s Project A, Buster Keaton’s Cops, The Notebook, Tommy Boy, Mr. Nobody, Black Cat, White Cat, The Goonies and Fried Green Tomatoes. The makers of the film defended the copying as a form of inspiration. However, it was alleged that the makers of the movie made no attempts to credit the original sources for the scenes. They were also heavily criticized for reproducing the same scenes rather than taking “inspiration” for the theme. A few days after the release, several videos were uploaded on YouTube showing side by side comparisons allegedly showing the copying of scenes. Additionally, it was also revealed that the background score for the movie, composed by Pritam was borrowed from the highly acclaimed soundtrack of the French filmAmΓ©lie. [32]

In his defense Anurag Basu has been saying he was merely paying homage to Chaplin and Keaton. But as you can see in the clip https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XEd8b6LzCZ4, he has also paid tribute to the third comedy genius of the 1920’s, Harold Lloyd. Why did then Anurag Basu never mention his name? Or was he thinking this at least would never be caught?

Okay, finally managed to see the film and so here’s my comment on this post:

    1) I agree with the title of this post. Sputnik has stated exactly what he mentioned

    2) Its a shame that Anurag copied all those scenes blindly and did not credit even one of them.

    3) I don’t think the notebook scene (sleeping together) is a copy… If that is considered as a copy then almost all scenes in any film where a character is showing looking put of the window from inside a train would be copy of one another.

    4) I think he did pay homage to Charlie Chaplin by showing his image or canvas whatever that was in one of the scene.

Now What if these scenes weren’t there in the movie:

Personally I think it wouldn’t really have made a significant enough difference if 80% of these scenes weren’t there in the movie…. (20% include clock scene, and mother daughter car lover scene) In fact it would have been edited off by 25-35 minutes and that would have been just amazing. Barfi without these scenes would have still remained a beautiful film that it is.

About the Impact of this post

This post has done the same to Barfi (and the audience) what SlumDog Millionaire did to most Americans and Indians in America– People used to come and ask me, whether There’s so many pools of shit everywhere in India..or whether we have girls pretty like Frieda Pinto in India…or whether people can speak english

This post though unintentionally, but has in a way killed the essence of the movie and pulled it away a little, from the success that it deserves.. Even if you have all the source in the world to copy.. its not easy to make a beautiful film that still remains so even without the copying. Remove all the copied scenes (90% of them are comedy scenes, which if done away will not make this movies any less) and then watch it..It will still be good.

There is no doubt that this post has taken away a lot of credit away from Barfi’s prestige – even for those who have liked it. Kudos to Sputnik for that.

This post actually made me watch this film. Let me first admit that watching movies about retarded leads is not my cup of coffee. I disliked KMG and could not like this one any better. Awareness about the plagiarism (thanks to this post) only made it worse.

But it seems many people have liked it; as it was with the case with KMG. But after talking to quite a few people in my circle, came to know that I am not the only one who disliked it. From the feedback I got, it seems females have liked this a lot, and also the ‘soft’ males too (to put it lightly). and these people are also eagerly waiting for JTHJ !

The only Ranbir movie I had liked remains Rajneeti. Seriously think this boy needs to grow up into a man soon.

Bored: I am one of the most insensitive people you’ll find out there…but I do give credit where its necessary… Ranbir did absolute justice to character of Barfi–In fact I’d say neither Priyanka nor Illena managed to do even 75% justice to their respective characters when compared to Ranbir… I have never really praised Ranbir that much..not even for Rockstar where people sang paeans about his performance. But this time he did do a fantastic job and such a performance (and since the movie is about his character primarily) and the movie deserves whats due.

Sup – I dont know you personally to estimate your sensitivity, but the guyz I know were bulldozed into watching this by their respective girlfriends/wives – and they found it ok. Most of them were much more appreciative of OMG.

The female counterparts, I found gushing about Ranbir and Barfi. In that way Barfi is the antithesis to Agneepath – the guyz enjoyed but the females loathed it.

I know the sleeping together scene can be common but I think with her coming and sleeping next to him in old age in a asylum/hospital setting is eerily similar. That’s why I chose to still post it.

I started with only 7 scenes but people kept adding scenes that were inspired from (even as late as last week). In light of all the new information I have serious doubt whether even a single scene in the movie is original. I just think we don’t know the original scenes until someone points them out.

Now as far as the movie is concerned I said in my review that the whole robbery/kidnap/murder angle and multiple narrators was unnecessary and that the movie was lengthy and boring. If the movie had concentrated just on the love story and the relationship between the three main characters the movie would have been shorter and I may have liked it too.

I don’t think Barfi can be defended as homage/tribute anymore after watching all the scenes posted in this thread. It is a straight case of plagiarism from multiple sources.

There is a fundamental difference here …

Indian definition of plagiarism – It is ok to copy few scenes, few chords, few pages, get inspiration and use underlying previous stories with lots of improvisation & lots of localization. Sure without proper citation. And then there are bunch of idiots who are forcing us to look at the bigger picture as overall work – a complete movie.

American definition of plagiarism (true one) – if there is single page copied in a book of 600 pages, the publisher will pull off the book from all bookstores and take returns from all the buyers, giving them complete refund. They will also publicly apologies for representing and being victim of plagiarism. Also, the producers or publishers can sue the authors for breach of contracts.

If it was INSPIRED, then the director should have given the credits to the orginal movies but it wasnt so it is COPIED. Indian music directors, movie makers are notorious of copying. In this age of internet, youtube, they dare to copy and then dare to defend it. Thats a shame. Now they have send it for Oscars, SUPER SHAME. Its amazing how people simply choose to be ignorant. Its nothing but shame. Even the Actors to be blamed as am sure the main actor must been seeing charlie chaplin and others to copy the scene.

This film was india`s official entry for this years `best feature film` academy awards. Now everyone will be dissapointed when its not selected. You can see why?

What ever is it, afterall a movie’s objective is to entertain the audience.. so Barfi does. It touches the depth of our heart, even if it is a copy or inspired one; far better than the so called original or self made bollywood films. And as cited here, it has a mixture of several all time great and legendary films, give the director and others involved, a credit!! It is an all in one single film……..
    I love this movieβ™₯

It’s really terrible shame. Terrible ripoff. Shame on makers, critics & supporters.

Guys I have a favor. Please create a movie based on copied scenes. Original Barfi movie’s running length is 150 minutes. If somebody create a movie(Title : “Barfi – homage to Anurag basu”) based on the original scenes around 90 minutes it would be awesome to share everywhere. I’ll send one copy to Anurag basu :D. I don’t know anything about video editing otherwise I already I have have done this.

Please please guys somebody create movie. And upload it on youtube & piratebay.

    Well done Sputnik.

    Thank you all.

Don’t knw y u felt tht way. Iam not taking any credit away frm u or TQ. Infact I congratulated u first. Just tht it has highest views & if tht is surpassed thn only other target remaining would be almost 700 comments in a single thread of NG. All i am talking here abt is quantity coz in Quality TQ has emerged winner in all its department.

PS: there wer no uncensored pics of SC, intead it was a news article, thts it.

    @FS,

I did not think you were taking any credit and I did not take any offense. Thanks for calling TQ the quality winner. You are also a contributor to the quality of TQ with your posts and your comments.

What I meant to say was that post got those views because the post was about Sheryln Chopra’s Playboy pictures. See people search for stuff like that and you don’t need to post pictures in that post. Title hi kaafi hai πŸ˜‰

    • FS 11 years ago

Sputnik – Thanks & I knw what you meant but I was just comparing the highest views & nothing else. Just like Box office numbers & not the quality of the film.

Great post. Keep up the good work in exposing these dumb filmmakers. Unfortunately they are very thick skinned, this doesn’t matter to them.

The only scene from Barfi, for which the original source was not found then (at least not mentioned on any listicles) was the friendship test using lamppost(tree). Finally came across it while watching some random trailers.

Thanks for the video. So its from the movie The Dangerous Lives of Altar Boys.

Its awesome that you came back to post the video 2 years after you asked @FS (who posted that comment 6 years back) which movie that scene is from.
