Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani Review – Wassupbollywood

yjhd stills[1]Ye Jawaani Hai Deewani was one of the most exciting, most awaited & one of the biggest films of this year. With Ranbir Kapoor, Deepika Padukone playing lead roles and Aditya Roy Kapoor, Kalki Koechlin as supporting characters this film was expected to entertain the audience as well as set the boxoffice ablaze. Ofcourse! the film has taken an historic opening on friday but is the movie worth all this craze? Where does the movie stand as compared to Ranbir Kapoor’s recent movies & ofcourse individually?

Story & Screenplay:

Kabir Thapar ala Bunny (Ranbir Kapoor) loves adventures and wants to live his life to fullest but doesn’t believes in marriage. He wants to go & enjoy every corner of the world. While going at a trip to Manali with friends Avi(Aditya Roy Kapoor) Aditi (Kalki Koechlin) he meets Naina Talwar (Deepika Padukone). Naina who used to be Bunny & group’s classmate in school is a girl next door who has always been busy in studies and has never enjoyed his life. Naina has came to tour having a sudden inspiration from Aditi &  joins the gang.

What happens next? How Naina manages to mingle with this fun loving gang? Does she seek inspiration from Bunny? How things grow between Naina & Bunny and how they end up like? What are the dreams of Bunny and how far he can go to fulfill them? is the film Ye Jawaani Hai Deewani all about.

Ayan Mukerji’s Screenplay is fresh & entertaining with lot of sensitivity. Specially in the first half where the audience can’t stop themselves laughing on jokes that friends crack & the situations they face at the trip. The first half of the film is complete entertainer with everything in it but the momentum drops considerably in second half which becomes bit emotional and off track. Yes, the emotions play important track in the film but they are not handled with perfection which could let the audience not feel awkward with sudden transformation of film’s mood. It must also be noted that film doesn’t has much melodrama which is a good thing. There are few scenes in second half  for example Bunny’s arrival at Aditi’s marriage, Scene between BunnyNaina and character of Rana Daggubati(He plays a cameo in the film) and some more that keep on spilling entertaining beans. Overall screenplay is youthful, fresh but ends up giving you mix feeling of entertained & boredom.

Direction & Star Performances:

Ayan Mukerji’s direction is first class. He has handled the film with very soft hands and has given a full youthful film that will be easily lapped up by audience specially by big city youngsters who will relate themselves to the characters. He has not added much mass appeal and therefore the film will not get appreciation in mass centers.

Ranbir Kapoor as Bunny has done an fabulous job. He looks charming, dance excellently, acts superbly what else one should wish for? Deepika Padukone as Naina looks easy and natural. Deepika has always played the glamorous role and doing this kind of character needed so much of transformation and the actress has done this so effortlessly. Aditya Roy Kapoor as Avi is nice. He is a good actor but has so much scope of improvement. Kalki Koechlin throws surprise in the role of Aditi. She has played the role of a carefree and loving girl with conviction & ease. Her transformation to girl who wants to marry and be husband’s women is applaudable.

Farooque Shaikh plays the small role of Bunny’s father excellently. Tanvi Azmi is also good asBunny’s step mother. She shines in her conversation with Bunny in ending part of the filmCameo Appearences by Madhuri DixitRana Daggubati, Kunal Roy Kapoor & Poorna Jagannathan are treat for audience.

Music & Technical Aspects:

Pritam’s music is entertaining and is topping the charts. His tunes has made the album one of the most popular albums of this year so far. Songs like Badtameez Dil are ruling the hearts of youngsters from past many weeks.  Choreography is excellently done by Remo D’ Souza, Ganesh Acharya Farah Khan. Lyrics are splendidly written by Amitabh Bhattacharya.  Background Music is also very good.

Cinematography by V. Manikandan is rich. Akiv Ali has done nice editing. Production Values are grand as always by Karan Johar.

Good Points:

1. Story of the film & entertaining scenes

2. Direction

3. Performances

4. Music

5. Production Values

Bad Points:

1. Film bores in various parts of second half

Ye Jawaani Hai Deewani is no where near the past couple of films by Ranbir Kapoor but its still a feel good film which could have been much better. Exceptional Performances & Music are the strongest part of the film.

Rating: 3/5
