Worsts and Bests of 2013- (strictly IMO)

This year saw some absurd films. They not only incensed me with its destructive content but also challenged intellectual prospect.

8. DHOOM3: It took me lot of pain to put a film like DHOOM3 in this list which I was expecting to see in the list of “Bests of 2013”. The film has no real passion to speak of. Everything happens to easily in the film. Conviction is what DHOOM3 had to look for which it eventually didn’t. The writers of this film probably were too tired to write anything for second half of the film. This is why we come across absurdity which lasts too long. Monumental disappointment!

7. Aatma: This so called horror is anything but spooky. Even at a short run time, it failed to gather any excitement. The narration is too simple to be believed. Even a fine actor like Nawaazuddin adds no value to the film. They probably didn’t have much of budget to spend on writers I guess.

6. ZANJEER: This film is devoid of any intense throughout the film. It is posed as a intense action drama film but this one is anti thesis. Instead the film has some regressive but hilarious unintentional one-liners. ZANJEER also marked debut of Ram Charan and it seemed his dictionary didn’t have acting. It’s a shame he gives such wearisome performance playing the character which was pinned as famous one when Amitabh Bachchan did it. Thank god for its non-performance at Box Office, this might have hammed some sense into producer’s head that having a brand name is not just what will take a film to make some bucks!

5. GORI TERE PYAAR MEIN: This so called rom-com lacked any sort of passion in its narration. It had a wafer-thin plot and equally recklessly penned screenplay. The film isn’t so boring in first hour but it takes you for an endurance test post-intermission. The odd pairing of Kareena-Imran did have its sparkling shades in that feel-good “Ek Main Aur Ekk Tu”. But GTPM is too dumb a film to call it sweet despite some humorous moments in first hour.

4. I ME AUR MAIN: As puerile as it could have got, this love triangle was full of done-to-death scenes. And despite being just around 105 minutes long, it evoked aplenty yawns. The problem is not that it was predictable; the problem is that there were efforts visible where one could have recognized that this film atleast has a heart.

3. INKAAR: I wouldn’t have mentioned this film if not for that incredibly stupid climax which is so shameful that it is unforgettable. Not that the film has a stable screenplay until climax. Sudhir Mishra tried his hands to sketch a complex set of narration to keep audience guessing. While all I could guess is how a well-skilled maker like Mishra could have taken to this. Barring couple of songs, which I have forgotten by now, there was nothing really in INKAAR where I could have positively commented.

2. YAMLA PAGALA DEEWANA 2: Filled with tasteless jokes and mundane characters, this film is inimical if you even remotely possess any intelligence. The film tries hard to be funny, but the clutch is in the base root i.e. there seemed no real attempt to pen ingenious humor. One never expects to have taut narration from such films, but one does look for few genuine and original gags. YPD2 is intrusive and exhaustive and for all the wrong reasons.

1. ISSAQ: I have very seldom been so desperate to leave a theater watching a film as much as I was during ISSAQ which was not only heavily inspired by Ishaqzaade’s screenplay but also the title name. Apart from the terrific title track, everything about ISSAQ will disgust you. After one point the film seemed like never-ending. And not only it’s the worst film this year, but one of the worst films one can ever witness. It was insignificant a film, but it transpired a significant effect on me, and in negative way, after I left the theater.

BESTS OF 2013:

7. CHASHME BADDOOR: The adversaries may complaint that this film was low-brow comedy, but then that is what one can expect seeing the promos. The film had rib-tickling sequences one after the other. It in a way had very derivative narration which reminds you of Govinda’s brand of comedy. The humor was borrowed from sms jokes, from hilarious poems and the slapstick that rather worked well. This one was a good comedy that gave me worth of my ticket price.

6. BOMBAY TALKIES: Plotted with four different stories, all reaching love for bollywood somehow, this one was compellingly made by each director and especially by Zoya Akhtar’s which was more of coming of age story. All had a very relevant and connective turns in their story that somewhere brought smiles on our faces. Even the competent performances formed vital reason for an engaging drama.

5. SHAHID: Nicely penned, this film injected all the right ingredients to make for an absorbing film. The film had a linear screenplay which was well brought on celluloid. The court-room sequences were excellent and nail-biting. Even Rajkumar Yadav’s top-notch portrayal on Shahid Azmi did well for the content.

4. VISHWAROOP: This film had some of the best action scenes of recent times. It was not merely entertaining; it had a lot more to it. Kamal Hassan rouse as one man show that did not only perform well but also directed a very enthralling film. The film was also shot in beautiful locales that legitimatized the flavor of the film. All in all, a very well made film.

3. D-DAY: I was taken aback by the film’s execution which was surprisingly without many clichés as against my prophecy. The film starts on a strong note and moves with solid pace thanks to the screenplay that tied the film’s scenes in grip. Taut, intense and thrilling, D-DAY was a film that was borrowed from facts and was stapled to director’s dream that we saw in climax. And I don’t need to talk about acting when you have ace actors like Irfan Khan and Rishi Kapoor in the film supported adequately by Huma Qureshi, Arjun Rampal and Chandan Roy Sanyal.

2. KAI PO CHE: This one was heart-breaking and heart-warming in equal measures. This film also boasts of a scene which I regard as best scene of the year in which the three protagonists jump into a river, which was slightly referred from “Rang De Basanti” but had got its own charm that left lasting imprint in my head and heart. The film was about three friends behaving almost brothers in beginning but soon the norms of life brings a crack in the cup. The swing in the mood of the film from joyful to tense is brought with ease by Abhishek Kapoor who also directed that heartfelt “Rock-On”.

1. GO GOA GONE: A first of its kind in Bollywood, this film knew how it should roll out before Indian audience. From scene A to scene Z, it kept me thinking about it and simultaneously made me jump in my seat laughing. It wasn’t a scary film, it wasn’t supposed to be one, but it definitely was supposed to be humorous which it indeed was. A smart screenplay favored the film’s lovely characters which ultimately made GO GOA GONE a hell of a roller-coaster-ride and the best film of the year.

From your list I didn’t like Besharam and Himmatwala too. There are lot of other mediocre films this year like Boss, R..Rajkumar etc.

2011 and 2012 were much better years.

Havent seen many movies in the list.

But I have to say this:

    YJHD

Not only worst of this year but of all time IMO. I dont leave cinema halls like that…or I dont hate movies so much.

But this one was too much…even a Karan JOhar or SRK movie would have been far bearable.

    This was so bad !!

This year, I don’t think there has been any solid 4 star film (according to my judgement). The ones I have liked to loved (3.5 stars in my book) are Aurangzeb, Fukreyy, Aashiqui 2, Madras Cafe, and Chennai Express. The ones I would rate at 3 stars would be Bhaag Milkha Bhaag, Raanjhana, YJHD, Micky Virus, and The Lunchbox. The ones at 2.5 stars are Matru Ki Bijli Ka Mandola, Chashme Buddoor, Phata Poster Nikala Hero, Special 26, and Kai Po Che. 2 stars: Satyagrah, Ek Thi Daayan, Ghanchakkar, Boss, Lootera. 1.5 stars: Once Upon a Time in Mumbai 2 and Besharam, and Suddh Desi Romance. Zero stars: Ishq Actually.

Haven’t seen the rest. Will watch Dhoom 3 in the next two days (couldn’t go today). I also want to see Ram-Leela, Rambo Rajkumar, and Krish3 from the recent movies I have missed out on watching on the big screen. May watch Bullet Raja as well.

The worst movie I watched this year is definitely Besharam. Other bad/worse movies I watched this year are Himmatwala, OUTIMD, MKBKM and Ram Leela.

  13. FS 10 years ago

From your list I have watched only Inkaar & for me personally it was one of the best movies of the year. Loved Arjun’s and Chitrangada performance.

Worst I would say OUATIMD, Satyanaash I mean Satyagraha, MKBKM (if it is this year’s release), Chashmebaddoor, Chennai Express (a better 30 minutes followed by pathetic second half), besharam, fukhrey (average), bhaag milkha bhaag (average), aurangzeb (average) & Ed thi dayaan.

The good to best ones are – Inkaar, YJHD, Ghanchakkar, Madras Cafe, Ranjhana, jolly llb, lootera, kai po che, shudd desi romance, Grandmasti & the lunch box.

Haven’t seen any other hindi movie that have been criticised or talked about.

Not sure why your comment went into moderation. You did not even post any links in your comment.

You mean comments from Dashboard on mobile site? Applied WordPress Update the other day and this is the latest wordpress version. They have changed some stuff and I don’t like it either. For me its not even scrolling properly from Dashboard on mobile.

D-Day was another movie that is totally bad. Everything appeared flawed and looked deliberate. Only highlight of the movie was the song that was well shot and very well executed emoting perfect emotions that was required for the song. Shruti looked absolutely stunning diva in Alvida song.
