Vice Movie Review by Sputnik

The story of Dick Cheney, the most powerful Vice President in history, and how his policies changed the world as we know it. VICE explores the epic story about how a bureaucratic Washington insider quietly became the most powerful man in the world as Vice-President to George W. Bush, reshaping the country and the globe in ways that we still feel today.

The movie is a satire and is told with a comic touch. The movie even has a end credits scene in the middle of the movie. The movie begins with a disclaimer that the movie is “as true as it can be given that Dick Cheney is known as one of the most secretive leaders in recent history. But we did our fucking best.” The movie has some factual inaccuracies though.

The movie tries to portray Dick Cheney as evil and the root cause of all the troubles in the world from creation of Fox News to Global Warming/Climate Change, Iraq War and ISIS. But it also tries to show him as a good father whether its telling his father-in-law (supposed murderer of his mother-in-law) to stay away from his daughters or him accepting his lesbian daughter and not running for President so as to prevent any political attacks on her.

Christian Bale was excellent as Dick Cheney and was nominated for an Oscar for Best Actor. He literally looked and talked like Dick Cheney. I think he deserved the Oscar for Best Actor over Rami Malek. Amy Adams was excellent as the ruthless Lynne Cheney and she was nominated for an Oscar for Best Supporting Actress. Have not watched Roma and The Favourite but she was way better than Regina King who won the Oscar for Best Supporting Actress.

Sam Rockwell was good as George W. Bush but I don’t think he deserved the Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actor. He had hardly any screen time. Steve Carell was excellent as Donald Rumsfeld and I think he should have instead been nominated for an Oscar for Best Supporting Actor. Tyler Perry was very good as Colin Powell. Alison Pill was good as Mary Cheney and Lily Rabe was good as Liz Cheney. The rest of the cast was good too.

The movie was nominated for 8 Oscars including Best Picture, Best Director, Best Original Screenplay and Best Film Editing. The movie won an Oscar for Best Makeup and Hairstyling.

The movie is written and directed by Adam McKay who previously made The Big Short and this movie also follows the same format as that one in telling a serious story about serious issues in a funny manner. Vice is a entertaining movie about Dick Cheney. Its one of the best movies of 2018.
