The bests, the worsts, disappointment and surprise of 2014

QueenBESTS OF 2014

5. Mardaani – Intrusive, inspiring and consistent. It was almost excellent until the climax. Rani Was fabulous.

4. Dedh Ishqiya – Quirky, notorious, thrilling and total joyride. Tight screenplay, engaging direction and exemplary performances! Just a little slow, but I will let that pass.

3. Hasee Toh Phasee – Beautifully staged comic romance. Take a note, its comic romance, not a romantic comedy. The film has hilarious moments and lovely romance cooked up. The leads were terrific although the film should have trimmed some scenes which were dragged.

2. Queen – If your character is so nicely written, there are no chances the film will fail. Kangana hit the nail with her performances. The film also benefitted from musical tracks. There were Only two scenes that somehow slackened the pace.

1. PK – What do I say, its so enjoyable and so relatable that your heart goes out to it. And more importantly, the film has practical narrative which wins the film brownies. And Aamir Khan gives a spectacular performance.

Other films I really enjoyed a lot (in no particular order) – Happy New Year, Holiday, Haider, Jai Ho.

WORSTS of 2014
5. Ungli – Despite of such a strong intent, this film had no head or tail to turn to. The narration itself was complex and the director’s lousy direction spoiled it all the way.

4. Kill Dil – Can’t remember the last time I expected something and was delivered something totally different. Plotted as action film and coming across as romantic drama really shocked me. But even the drama was juvenile.

3. One By Two – Boring and unengaging in every scene.

2. Shaukeens – Disgusting, unfunny and devoid of laughs. And the overlong songs add to irritation.

1. Action Jackson – I don’t remember the count of number of times I wanted to run out of the theatre. Seriously makers, what were you thinking!

Other mentions (In no particular order) – Raginni MMS, Gulaab Gang, Total Siyappa.

DISAPPOINTMENT OF THE YEAR – BANG BANG – it wasn’t unwatchable, it was just not good enough.

SURPRISE OF THE YEAR – Sulemaani Keeda

Found Hasee Toh Phasee ok. It was watchable mainly due to Siddharth. Here is my comment on it.

Here is my comment on 2 States. I thought the dad son relationship was inspired from Udaan but it turned out that the dad son relationship in Udaan was inspired from Chetan Bhagat’s novel. Link.
