Tanqeed Health Series : Part 1 – Misconceptions of Weight loss

This post is dedicated to all TQ members/visitors who are or might want to become health-conscious.This is my first post for the health series which I had planned long back, wherein I wish to share some of my own training experiences and knowledge based on secondary research regarding misconceptions of weight loss.

Most people think that spending two hours at the gym or eating less will make them lose weight. Both are delusions.IMO gym is nothing but a fad to make money. You pay the fees but the instructor will not guide you beyond the first week. After a month or so,it becomes just a place to hang out with friends.Do not waste money on it.Instead a 30-40 min proper intense workout even at home can give better result.

Many think that doing a 1-1.5 hr long continuous cardio everday will cause significant weight loss. This is the biggest misconception.Your RMR (resting metabolic rate )remains elevated for only 1-2 hours following a typical cardio workout. Conversely, your RMR remains elevated for up to 1-2 days following a strenuous training session ( high intensity exercises) in which a large quantity of your skeletal muscle has been traumatized.I can vouch for this from personal experience. I am a Shotokan Karate practioner myself and we train only twice a week! Moreover our training session is not continuous but always broken down into stop-start sessions where the whole body is pushed to limits. There are times when I can hardly walk back home because my whole body is exhausted, the muscles are traumatised. But this is where the secret lies. This trauma created in your muscles during such training is the process of muscle protein breakdown. Then, in the hours and days following that intense training session, your body must repair the damaged muscle. This is called muscle protein synthesis. During this whole process, your RMR is elevated due to the repair work your body is performing. Hence, you end up burning a lot more additional calories from this residual RMR increase than you would have from the those long continuous cardio training sessions.

Excessive cardio training actually can cause a loss of lean muscle mass, therefore decreasing your RMR. the lower your RMR, the harder it’s going to be to lose any more body fat and easier to store body fat if you happen to overeat.

Most competitive sports are also based on stop-and-go movement or short bursts of exertion followed by recovery.
Another benefit of variable intensity training is that it is much more interesting than long boring steady state cardio programs.
A 20-minute high intensity interval training session is much more effective than a 40-50 minute boring steady pace cardio session due to several factors like residual metabolic after-burn effect, muscle retention, hormonal response, heart rate variability, etc. It will also save you time!

Keep your workouts shorter but intense; your best results will most likely come from keeping your workouts between 30-60 minutes in length.

________________________________________________________________

But just exercise alone is not sufficient.Eating habits are the sole reason that most people never lose weight no matter how hard they train. And No! Eating less doesnt help lose weight. This is another biggest misconception.

While people do experience initial weight loss with crash diets, it is actually a loss of lean muscle, which will lower your RMR, making it easier to put the fat back on in the long run.

One of the first reasons people experience an initial quick weight loss with a low carb diet is that they lose water weight by depleting their muscle glycogen stores. Muscle glycogen stores are basically stored carbohydrate in all of your skeletal muscle. A significant quantity of water is also held in the muscle cells of the body along with the glycogen. When you deplete your muscle glycogen stores, you also lose a good bit of water weight. You might have noticed that a persons muscles appear smaller (kind of shrunken) when they go on a low carb diet.

When you eat carbohydrates, they are broken down in your system and raise your blood sugar. Your pancreas secretes insulin to remove the excess sugar from your blood and deposit it into fat stores.Slow and steady carbohydrate sources are ideal because they give you steady energy levels, reduce cravings, and allow your body to utilize fat for energy in addition. The more unrefined and fibrous the carbohydrate source the slower the carbohydrate will be digested, and the lower and more steady the blood sugar and insulin response.More heavily refined starches and sugars where the fiber has been removed will be digested much more quickly and cause a higher blood sugar spike and subsequent crash after insulin has done its job.
People who eat a lot of refined processed carbohydrates typically go through these cycles of blood sugar spikes and crashes, which causes them to crave more carbohydrates and leads to body fat gain.

The blood sugar level can be managed by what is called the glycemic index (GI) of foods.Basically, foods that raise your blood sugar quickly will have a higher GI and foods that raise your blood sugar slowly and to a lower degree will have a lower GI. Examples of foods with high GI’s are white rice, white bread, white potatoes, corn flakes, crispy rice cereals, sugars (except fructose), ice cream, bananas, cooked carrots, candy, and any other refined carbohydrates where the fiber has been removed.
Examples of foods with lower GI’s are most dairy products, most fruits and vegetables, whole unrefined grains, sweet potatoes, barley, beans, and most other higher fiber carbohydrate sources.

Now that you are aware of the misconceptions,in next part i will talk about the 30-40 mins intense workout. πŸ˜€

To What “Effect” does an 1Hour Brisk Walk, 6Days a Week Help[Incase, One doesn’t Join the Gym]???

    • Baba Ji 11 years ago

Its gonna make you sweat a lot for sure. Other than that,as i explained in my post,it wont make much difference.

  2. Serenzy 11 years ago

Then How Exactly can We Make a Diffrnce[Read: Lose Wieght], if You Say – “Don’t Join the Gym”

    • Baba Ji 11 years ago

If you can manage a personal fitness trainer, then he may guide you properly but going to a gym with common instructor will not serve any purpose. they dont pay personal attention.you will continue to do the wrong things and no one will correct you.But all this needs lots of money,Instead there are some HIIT which can be done even at home and you can get better results. There are some good videos available on youtube.I will make next post on the HIIT. wait for it πŸ˜€

Good post baba – I have never been so conscious of my health till date. I went to gym to pump up my muscles and not to stay fit or healthy. There is no change in my weight for nearly 7-9 yrs and constantly change between 70-73kg. Actually i have tried to put up weight and i have failed. Don’t understand the dynamics. Neither I lost weight after missing my breakfast for nearly 6 months nor gained weight after having regular 3 timers (yeah but i lost my perfect abs for sure). Even after gym my muscles grew but i could not increase my weight.

I had joined Aerobics for about 2 months and that is hell of a pain to do. I guess to have perfect abs, aerobics could be of great help but its pain in the ass and can be done at home as well.

    • Baba Ji 11 years ago

Thanks FS. To build muscles, eat eggs and other protein rich foods. missing breakfast is a disaster and should be avoided.Your muscles didnt grew after gym.probably they got toned that is why there is no increase in weight.even if you hold two bricks in hand and keep your arms parallel to shoulder and stand for 2 mins 5-5 times, the arms become tight and look toned,it is not difficult.

Aerobics is far better than gymming.yes its difficult and can be done at home, need self belief and will power.

    Good thread Baba.

Just stop using lift and use stairs in office / home. Avoid using bike/car for going to shop nearby (within 1-1.5 kms) No separate exercise is needed if u do this. And yes, watch what u eat. No junk food.

    • Baba Ji 11 years ago

Thanks ritz.yes biggest factor is what we eat.but because of our work schedule and hectic life,we dont get the time to eat at regular intervals.so we end up eating junk or more food than needed. to counter this hectic life scenario, what we need is those short intensive workouts. normal brisk walking etc might not make much difference.though it is good to warm up the body and muscles.

      • Ritz 11 years ago

5 years back in India, very few heard of Oats or Green Tea. Now in every IT company in pantry this is ready.

Within next 2-3 years green-tea/oats will be in hotel menu.

I can see in next 5 years these becoming household names….

Everyone now knows ill effects of Junk Food. Follow karna apne haath me hai…

        • Baba Ji 11 years ago

ritz – i am big fan of green tea. infact i dont like any other tea. may be lemon tea sometimes πŸ˜€ green tea is an anti-oxidant .it also promotes hair growth.

          • Ritz 11 years ago

same here….i dont like any tea in which milk is mixed. If you visit parts of kerala/ tamilanadu where tea is cultivated…they dont mix milk in tea. In fact they dont even mix sugar in tea.

I know it is high in anti-oxident – thats one of the reason I love it. For the same reason I love wine also.

            “it also promotes hair growth”
But I am becoming bald πŸ™

          • Baba Ji 11 years ago

green tea suppresses DHT hormone which causes males pattern baldness. your hair loss may be severe. There are other things which you may try. I will also make a post on “How to regrow hair” in this series .so keep looking forward to it πŸ˜€

Great post babes.. On the lines of expert on fitness trainer.. as I said to u I totally agree about eating less is not directly proportional to weight loss but instead it’s right food that helps in weight reduction… Once u have fat on ur body eating less or even eating right will not solve problem u need to do workout.. I read again about cardio and RMR thing.. It’s still going over my head too technical for my taste πŸ™‚ .. What my understanding is (kind of layman) that more u sweat during ur workout more ur burning calories and the fat on ur body.. u can push yourself most in terms of burning with running + jogging.. So whenever I have to recommend someone to lose weight I say just run.. πŸ˜€ .. And I heard from someone that running on road is best than on trade mill.. And also running trade mill can cause muscle tear.. Did I heard right?

    • Baba Ji 11 years ago

Thanks lambu. see RMR thing is simple. as ritz said, most of us can and do walk in professional life. – say from home to bus or railway station and while returning home back.So our body is conditioned to this much amount of exertion.so even a normal brisk walking or jogging for 1 hr will not push the body over the limits that it has been conditioned to. When you do intensive workout like say kicking 50 times in one minute (giving an example) the body is not ready for this exertion and by the end of workout, you feel exhausted and its effect remains for a couple of days.

I remember my first day at karate class, my legs were shaking after the session got over and my whole body was exhausted. For the next two days, my muscles were stretched and i was not able to walk fluently. But the wear and tear process of the body makes you harder the next time you do it. and in this process more calorie is burnt then those time consuming cardio exercises.

      • Baba Ji 11 years ago

lambu – excessive cardio training causes loss of lean muscle mass.you must have observed the body of those marathon runners.all are really thin.almost skinny.they have lot of stamina and endurance because of practising long cardio exercises but the muscle mass is depleted.

        • lambu 11 years ago

Baba, got ur point but they have reached this stage after doing it daily.. A person who has huge fat over his body have abundant time to reach that stage πŸ˜€ Marathon runners are skinny because they have to run daily to maintain there body for grilling tasks of Olympics, marathon… And they have no fat left..

      • lambu 11 years ago

What u r saying that body should be exhausted for weight loss and when u do cardio daily body get used to it.. So in a way if I do cardio twice a week so that body gets rest and able to get exhausted then also weight loss shud work isn’t it? And 1 more question if in gym, I am pilling iron rods to build muscles.. E.g. In 1 week I picked 70 kg bench press next week I did 75 kg.. Which do result in exhaustion as u have to give too much power.. Is it also result in weight loss?

        • Baba Ji 11 years ago

I clearly said brisk walking, jogging for 1-1.5 hrs doesnt even cause much weight loss, forget depletion.
I need to know what you mean when you use the word “cardio” .what do you do in it? if its mere jogging or brisk walking, then it wont do anything.

Once you are done with HIIT,then if you do the bench press,it will cause weight loss because your body is enuff warmed up to lose calories. even when you are done your workout, bcos of RMR the body continues to use calories.so it can be good.

  6. lambu 11 years ago

And about food.. There is 1 ingredient maida which should be avoided as much u can.. Just google about maida u will come to know about problems it gave.. for brief, maida is difficult to digest and stuck in ur stomach and can give health issues also devoid of any nutrients/minerals/etc only thing is that they taste awesome πŸ˜€ .. Chholle bhature, naan, samosas, and many more things.. Foreign cheese again all fat gives nothing to ur body other than gr8 Taste.. My friend jokingly once said all tasty items are not good for health :D.

    Baba,

    – What is HIIT?

    – Which is Better?
Walking/Jogging on Road OR Tread Mill..

Is it True that, Long Hours on Tread Mill Each Day Reslts to Paining of Knees in Future?

    – Almost 95% of the Models, Actors, Actresses arnd the World in Cinema and Fashion Use Gyms to Tone their Bodies, Keep in Shape and Build Muscles.

Why Shudn’t A Common Indian Man Join?
Just bcz the Trainers will Neglect aftr 1Month[Gtting a Personal Trainer isnt the Solution].

    • Baba Ji 11 years ago

HIIT = High Intensity Interval Training

Jogging on road is better. celebs have personal fitness trainer who ,like a shadow observes each and every aspect of what they do,eat etc.

20 min of this turning kick workout of taekwondo can burn more calories than 1 hr of useless brisk walking. give it a try especially in the hot weather conditions in India right now

    • Anjanpur685Miles 11 years ago

      @Baba

Utkatasana gives one a effect of walking for 5KM (around 1 hr or so) in 30 seconds.

In the image the posture of his back is correct but the feet should rest fully on ground. Unfortunately could not find an correct image on net – but this one was more close except the feet position – others were having wrong postures.

In this one having straight back is a must.

      • Baba 11 years ago

thats a great stance. it is similar to the horse stance ( kiba dachi) in karate. yes having straight back is a must and the knee must be bent as if you are sitting on something.its one of the basic stances in all martial arts as well. Utkatasana visually looks tougher though.

Besides that, breath control is one of the most important thing in Yoga. I will type full text here:

    TECHNIQUE:

    1 Stand erect.

2 Do not bear the weight of the body either on the heels or on the toes; but distribute it evenly on both.

3 Keep the legs at one foot gap. The both legs must be parallel like railway rails.

4 Stretch your hands at the front side.

5 The both hands should be at shoulder level and the distance between the two hands is equal to the length of the chest.

6 Bend the knees and lower the trunk till the thighs are parallel to the floor.

7 Do not bend forward, but keep the chest back as far as possible.

8 The back bone i.e; the spinal cord should be straight

    BREATHING:

Breathing should be normal in the final position. Should not hold the breath. After relaxing this asana, two times deep breathing can be taken.

    TIMINGS:

This asana can be done for 20 to 30 seconds according to the practitioner’s capacity. 1 or 2 times can be done.

    BENEFITS:

The ankles become strong and the leg muscles develop evenly. The abdominal organs and the back are toned.
This pose removes stiffness in the shoulders and corrects any minor deformities in the legs.

This asana cures the knee pain and the swelling in the knees and the foot.

This asana gives the 5 km walking effect.

PS: there are so many minute details and technique details etc – the above text is copied from a small pocket handbook on yoga.

    • Baba 11 years ago

thanks for this.Yoga has many great postures and stances which give excellent results compared to what you achieve in gym.

  12. Suprabh 11 years ago

I am starting Utkatasn starting tomorrow morning…. My mother kept telling me to do it..Never listened to her..

will finally listen to Ritz πŸ˜€

  13. Anjanpur685Miles 11 years ago

haha Sup, btw ..when I was doing Yoga (now discontinued ..do cycling more) this alone asana really helped me get in shape.

    Baba and Sup,

The back cannot be fully straight in this no matter how hard one tries…its inclined from vertical by atleast 5 to 10 degrees. Baba, the difference in this asana and the other poster u posted is that the legs have to parallel (only 1 feet distance in them) and that makes it tougher..

    Sup,

My trainer had told me to do this asana first by resting my back against a wall and imitate as if I am sitting on a chair (with feet fully touching ground and distributing weight evenly..and knees bent at exact 90 degrees). Later on after a week I started doing it without wall support.

    • Baba 11 years ago

yes in kiba dachi , the feet are 2 shoulders apart, so there is the difference with the yoga stance. kiba dachi is imitating the position of a person riding a horse.

you actually ride cycle these days or you use cycling machine? cycling machine is a pretty useless activity. talking from experience.
