    Editor held for harassing wife

    EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
Dec 29: The editor of Film and Information Weekly, Komal Nahata, was arrested last night for harassing his wife Sangeeta for dowry. He has been remanded in police custody upto January 5, 1998. His mother Seeta and sister Meena too were arrested today, but were released later on a bail of Rs 10,000 each.

Sangeeta, who had attempted suicide twice earlier, filed an application with the Khar police on December 26 following which a case was registered against the Nahatas.

Police Inspector Vilas Pawar of the Khar police said Sangeeta in her application has alleged that her mother-in-law Seeta and sister-in-law Meena had started passing unkind remarks against her father only a few days after the marriage. Soon it became clear that they were not happy with the dowry she had brought in with her.

As time passed, the comments became more acerbic and the reasons flimsier. Sangeeta was now being criticised for such petty things as “undercooked food” and a “saree slightly askew.” This led to Sangeeta’s first suicide attempt in 1991 when she took an overdose of sleeping pills. She was rushed to a private nursing home and had a narrow escape.

But things did not change at home. And harassment resumed soon after she returned. In 1993 she moved to her parents place. When she returned a year-and-a-half later, there was no let-up in the torture.

The matter came to a boil when on December 19, 1997, Sangeeta’s sister-in-law insulted her in the presence of a friend. A few days later Sangeeta consumed 10 sleeping pills and 150-175 ml of phenyl. She also wrote two letters – one to her husband demanding an apology and the other to her uncle saying that her-in laws be held responsible for her death.

Sangeeta was admitted to KB Bhabha Municipal Hospital and was later shifted to Aradhana Nursing Home. Sources said that Komal pleaded to Sangeeta to refrain from revealing anything to the police for the sake of their three-and-a-half-year-old son. Taking this as an indicator to Komal’s and his parents’ willingness to turn a new leaf, Sangeeta kept mum and returned home. But, her confidence was misplaced. Not only did her in-laws force her to give an undertaking that they would not be anyway responsible if she tried to commit suicide again, they also stepped up their torture.

Sangeeta then filed an application with the Khar police on December 26, 1997 leading to the arrests.
