Such an outstanding song this is… Gulzar(the LEGEND) at his all-time best.
RD and Kishore-da create magic out of such a simple and soothing song.

I had Not heard much of the old hindi songs before but now, espc. in past 2-3 months I’ve been listening to them a lott on Radio Station’s at Night and I find them brilliant.
I intend to make a POST on it sometime..

Gulzar always interestingly uses “day and night” (“raat” aur “din” – both ) — to describe passing days..how time has passed (“…how days pass[ed] “).
Be it this song or Rab rakha beliya or Main ek sadi se baithi hu from Lekin. I especially like how he calls day and night as “wheels” (pahiye) in Lekin song.

Din ne haath thaamkar ..idhar bitha diya
raat ne ishaare se.. udhar bula liya
    – above song

Phir raat kati, aur din nikla
Jab din nikla to raat chadhi
phir preet ki aisi peeng badhi, rab raakha beliya
    – Paheli

din raat ke dono pahiye bhi
    kuch dhool udaakar beet gaye…
main man aangan mein baithi rahi
    chaukhat se koi guzra nahin
    – Lekin

Agreed, its not only ‘his’ unique style and many poets have done it but compared to bollywood standards its nice to see passage of time described in such way than simply saying “bahot din beete” etc etc.
