      Agree. The music composer died long before Pakeezah released.

      Don’t know much about the not dancing part but Rekha also danced as a Tawaif in Muqaddar Ka Sikandar which came before Umrao Jaan.

    raj kumar probably had the most distinct dialgue delivery ever in bw. weird but effective style. some call him Indias Clint Eastwood 😀

      Yeah he had distinct style. Liked him in Saudagar and Pakeezah. Also liked him in 36 Ghante but his role was not the typical stylish type in that one. Had seen Waqt as a kid so don’t remember but his dialogues from that movie are still famous. There was another movie where he was professor or something and he along with his students fight against villains/corruption. Don’t remember name.

        if you want to have a good fun time, watch betaj badshah. his confrontations with shatrughan sinha and the dialogues and the way rajkumar says them is hilarious 😀

    it is said that meena kumari was not a good dancer and so used to sit and sing the mujras with almost no body movements. this film became so famous that actresses copied her style when they played tawaifs and they also didnt use to dance till rekha did umrao jaan and showed a tawaif could dance.not 100% sure.

    @Sputnik ,

    One humble request :

    Dont be like SONY, MTV, ZOOM, 9XM or other such music channels – atleast when posting such classics post the names of all the main ppl who contributed to the song. 😉
    Lyricist is Kaifi Azmi you haven’t mentioned him.

    The song is fantastic – but when talking about Ghulam Mohammad’s work, I prefer Mirza Ghalib (1954) music done by him – especially the songs “hai bas ke har ek unke ishaare mein” and “dil-e-naadan tujhe hua kya hai” – compared to Pakeejah.

    No, not only because of Ghalib being the lyricist and the words – but Ghulam Mohammed had given apt music for the feelings expressed in the shayari by Ghalib in these.. And it was different than the way Shayari was sung. It was kind of path breaking.

    (the actors were pathetic in these movies btw)
