Scene of the Week: Shatranj Ke Khilari

Check out this excellent scene from Satyajit Ray’s Shatranj Ke Khilari which is based on Munshi Premchand’s short story of the same name. It is about two friends Mirza Sajjad Ali (Sanjeev Kumar) and Mir Roshan Ali (Saeed Jaffrey), who are so obsessed with the game of chess that they neglect their wives and are indifferent to the kingdom of Awadh being seized by the East India Company.

A few more scenes from the movie.

Watch the full scene 😉

The scene where Mir Roshan Ali finds his nephew hiding in his wife’s bedroom 😉

The scene where the two friends start fighting after Sanjeev Kumar asks Saeed Jaffrey about the nephew who was hiding in the bedroom.

Had written a recco few years ago which I had posted here before.

I like the 3rd scene more interesting and see the face of Farooq Shaikh.

Truly, Charulata is an impeccable movie. Loved the acting, photography, restraint…What great actors Soumitra and Madhabi are. Soumitra Chatterjee is a wonderful singer too. Check out his video where he sings for a ad jingle. Loud confident voice.

Charulata is the only movie of his I felt is highly overrated..read reviews afterwards and ppl trying to find too much in that – poetic expressions / restraint and what not. Restraint?!? poda !! – I was bored!

Not to take away anything from Soumitra btw – I quite liked him in Ganashatru and as a Feluda. But Charulata is big damn bore and overrated movie.
