Scene of the Week: Karz

Check out this scene from Karz which was very shocking/unexpected for its time. Karz is inspired from The Reincarnation of Peter Proud which was more like a B Grade movie and I think Karz was a good Bollywood masala adaptation. Here is my comment on The Reincarnation of Peter Proud Link. The scene from the original happens on a boat and is quite tacky. Raj Kiran seems to be copying Rishi Kapoor’s mannerisms which is quite a smart thing to do.

    its a good role as the woman is bad and she kills the hero. but simi garewal didnt make much impact, she is wooden. parveen babi would have suited this role

      Yeah Parveen Babi would have been good. Simi Garewal was never a good actress even though she acted in movies like Namak Haraam.

    Rishi was fantastic in Karz.

      When I watched this movie in the 90s I liked it a lot and felt that this was Rishi’s best performance back then. Re-watched the movie a few years back and some of it has not aged well.

    Karz was Coverage at Boxoffice (Read Hit in today’s term). This was so surprising to me when I get to know in late 80’s .. I remember its telecast at doordarshan made huge impact on audience back then .. all my classmates discussed this movie for months .. we also learn to play that famous tune with flute .. πŸ™‚

      Box-office wise Bobby is Rishi’s biggest hit .. but impact wise Karz was equally huge.

    I like this movie for songs, esp “Ik haseena thi..”

    Rishi movies are good in songs, karz was done by LP and that signature tune is also a steal πŸ™‚ but I still love it.

    Karz was big impact movie of Rishi… Yeh Punar-janam theme never out-dates and obliterates in BW. Its in our DNA

      Yeah songs were great.

      While they were reincarnation based movies like Madhumati, (avenging part happens in first life itself. Second life if just for happy ending), Milan and so on I think this is the first movie where the person takes revenge in his second life for the wrong that happened to him in his first life. Does anyone know of any movies which came before Karz and which had revenge in second life?

      If Karz is the first then this is the template for all revenge seeking reincarnation movies like Karan Arjun, OSO and so on. I also like that Raj Kiran and Rishi played the roles in different lives just like in the original instead of stupidly casting the same actor in different lives. Even if one’s soul gets transferred to this new life why would they have the same looks and features?

        when you are willing to accept the concept of reincarnation, transfer of soul etc then bearing same face of two persons is a small thing to assume πŸ˜‰ for me all the reincarnation films have aged badly. dont like any of them now

      @Baba,

      One can believe in reincarnation or not but reincarnation means transfer of soul/spirit not physical transfer so they cannot have the same face and features. But Bollywood has propagated this physical transfer thing for so long that no one has a problem with it. Karz and Eega are two Indian movies which do not have the physical transfer.

      • Baba 11 years ago

        two ppl having similar faces,even physicality is a common thing seen in real life.many actors have look alikes who are not genetically/biologically related to the actor. i find reincarnation a much absurd concept and in movies it is even more cringeworthy

          If one can believe that there is a soul which lives on after death or if it will go to heaven/hell one can believe in transfer of soul to another human/animal too. Its just a belief just like the other one which can’t be proved/disproved.

          Now coming to physical similarities there are some who resemble each other but they are not like identical twins. Usually some guy is told from a young age that he resembles so & so actor. Then that guy starts copying that actor’s look and models himself on the actor and starts looking similar.

            the next step after soul transfer is believing in black magic and so on

  9. John Galt 11 years ago

    I think the odds of soul finding a new body would be equal to the soul finding a similar looking body. πŸ˜€

    Its a fictitious concept Baba..although I agree its not very appealing anymore.. Probably in our childhood days it all seemed very mystical but not fascinating anymore.

    @Baba,

    “the next step after soul transfer is believing in black magic and so on”

    Almost all religions believe in heaven/hell so they do believe in soul and/or body transfer. Black Magic is a theory just like any other. And there is Harry Potter a very popular movie involving Black Magic too.

    When one can believe/watch superhero movies or movies featuring aliens then one can surely watch reincarnation or ghost based movies too. I don’t believe in ghosts but I did like movies like Ghost, The Ring, The Others and the Fallen.

    Read this on reincarnation.
