Thanks for posting sputnik.Just saw it and skipped a lot of portions. Its very slow in pace.aamir is looking like 60 years old and is too fake at times and over preachy. He might touch sensitive issues in this show but thats about it.He will merely touch it.

Ironically I feel the same females who like saans-bahu shows will like this show.It is India’s version of Oprah Winfrey.I am not too interested in it as of now,I was expecting aamir to go in interiors of India and talk to ppl ,not shooting the whole thing in studio by bringing slective people.

SJ took topic of female foeticide but said nothing that we dont already know. some celebs on twitter are behaving as if they lived under a rock all these ages and suddenly aamir enlightened them.what aamr said/did today is elementary level.Stuff thatt we read in 5th std textbooks in schools.

instead of SJ,watch debate sessions weekly on ndtv, timesnow or cnn ibn, much better debates where you can actually get some knowledge, experts from the field,well-informed audience and a logical conclusion to all topics too.

  3. Baba Ji 12 years ago

i wanted SJ to be a travel show with a socio-political narrative wherein aamir wud visit the interiors of india, discuss how ppl live etc and speak for them.but he has decided to be oprah winfrey.that title song promo was misleading.

Watched the first episode in bits missed the first 20 min or so. The show is not bad but this is nothing new. This has been done many times before by various news channels. The only difference is that there is a star who is now hosting it.

Agree with you Baba that Aamir was fake and over preachy on the show. Aamir is now officially India’s Oprah Winfrey and I hate that show too.

    ——————–

“some celebs on twitter are behaving as if they lived under a rock all these ages and suddenly aamir enlightened them.”

Well they are either Aamir fans or closet Aamir fans. And you are not supposed to even criticize the show.

According to Pratim Gupta, the Telegraph critic “Fans of other Khans, trolls and countrymen don’t make fun of this endeavour from Aamir. Listen to him. Satyamev Jayate.”

Aamir fanboy Mihir Fadnavis says “Ok its a bit pretentious. So? What have you done for society?” I mean this idiot disses every movie that does not star his favorite Aamir Khan. Going by his logic what movies has he made to criticize others movies?

Aamir is supposedly charging 3 Cr per episode but this is supposed to be social service according to his fans.

Shailesh Kapoor the guy who talks about ratings and tells how Bodyguard and Singham did well on TRP tweets that

“Measuring a program only by the volume of audience is a myopic view. Affinity and impact are equally, if not more, important! ”

“Will it work, will it not? Why does all TV content have to become a function of decimal point ratings? Impact may not lie only in ratings!”

“What’s this 3cr argument? Money is exchanging hands between Star, sponsors & AK. All corporate entities. It is NOT tax-payer’s money!”

I am sure there were movies which were much better and had social relevance than Bodyguard/Singham did he highlight those with the same arguments?

“instead of SJ,watch debate sessions weekly on ndtv, timesnow or cnn ibn, much better debates where you can actually get some knowledge, experts from the field,well-informed audience and a logical conclusion to all topics too.”

Well this show is not intended for the real intellectuals. This is a dumbed down version for the pseudo intellectuals, fanboys and internet activitists.

Now Aamir and his wife had a surrogate baby. So they most probably paid some woman to carry their baby – they basically rented some women’s womb/body to have their own baby. So is selling/buying some women to get married is not ok but selling/buying women’s body to have a child is ok?

Aamir had kids from his earlier marriage and if they were having problems they could have adopted someone. I am sure there is no dearth of orphans in India. And if Aamir was really concerned about female infanticide he should have adopted a female child specially someone who was rescued from female infanticide. But then this is Aamir and this is nothing new coz he believes in “Do As I Say Not As I Do”.

People can look beyond haters’ angle too. The show was not just debate. Nor is it about Aamir earning X crores alone. They are also raising funds for the NGOs working on these issues. All money from SMSes will go to NGOs, there are details to make donations to NGOs on both the show and its website. As well as generating donations through free clicks on SMJ site (somewhat like thehungersite.com).

And the kind of reach this show has, no We The People type show has it! So many different languages and different countries – with a follow up show on each issue-based episode every Friday on Star News. We The People never raised funds for people working on those issues, nor did it ever do a follow up or was available in different languages!

It’s not totally out of the box, but not all same like other shows either and not at all just a profit making talk show with only talk about issues but no other contribution!

I already said it is being made that anyone who criticizes the show is a hater. So the common people have to donate through SMSs and donate money but Mr. Aamir Khan will pocket 3 Cr per episode and donate nothing?

So all the money that’s coming from those ads is it going to charity?

      • hithere 12 years ago

That is why in other thread I said we often comment based on information where we don’t have any confirmation. I don’t think Aamir or Star have said he is getting 3 crore. Even if he is getting we don’t know what he does with that money. Does he have to declare all the charity? I am pretty sure even if he declares then also there would be plenty of distractors.

We can always criticize the show for stale content or format or whatever..But when you criticize the messenger becuase he did X and he doesn’t have authority due to that is not correct and it shows bias IMO.

ps – I have inkling one of the show might be on IVF.

ps1 – Aamir has kids but you forgot Kiran? If there is a way why can’t she have her own kid, if there is a way?

ps2: I have more things to say about surrogacy but I think experience is more importance. Even if I say something it won’t be useful. So I am pretty sure once people get married, they have different perspective on kids, motherhood, infertility..

        • Milind 12 years ago

If there is a way,you can adopt a female child if you are so desperate to send a message across…you can do it! Can’t it be seen that way?

The desire to have one’s “own” biological child[girl or boy] is no different in the intensity of intent to have one’s own boy child!

Infanticide begins in culture,Aamir is no different than the culture he lives in! Where is the difference!

          • hithere 12 years ago

You don’t have to adopt, You can always pay for education. There are numbers of ways to achieve the same result.

The issue is you abort a child after finding that its is a girl is wrong. Whatever nature has given parents should accept it. IMO people who abort a pregnancy because it was accidental or foetus has Down syndrome or any other reason is fine except for above reason.

I doubt there will be confirmation from Star or Aamir even if it is true.

My first comment about this was “Aamir is supposedly charging 3 Cr per episode but this is supposed to be social service according to his fans. ”

I said “supposedly” but not only fans a lot of people were defending it assuming it is true.

And my second comment was “So the common people have to donate through SMSs and donate money but Mr. Aamir Khan will pocket 3 Cr per episode and donate nothing?”

          This was again a question.

I don’t agree that the message is important and that it does not matter who the messenger is. The messenger’s integrity is very much important and I have said the same before too.

Would people watch a similar show hosted by Suresh Kalmadi on anti-corruption, Azhar on removal of match-fixing, and so on and so forth?

And I have an inkling that one of the episodes might be on orphans too.

I am sorry I don’t agree with a couple using someone else’s body to have a baby of their own period. Fertility treatment is different from surrogacy.

“I don’t agree with a couple using someone else’s body to have a baby of their own period. ”
I don’t have problem with your viewpoint. I personally don’t mind if you are not able to have baby for medical reasons. I do mind if perfectly healthy people do it because they have money. Ask any preganant woman in their 8th or 9th month of pregnancy ..they are so exhausted that they wait for the baby to come out soon..It is a tough job. If someone is doing it they really need money.

Good decision by the govt. Commercial surrogacy needs to be banned.

            ——————–

India’s ‘rent-a-womb’ industry could close doors to foreigners

Soon foreign couples won’t be able to pay surrogate mothers in India to have babies for them — if the Indian government has its way.

India is one of the top countries in the world for couples searching for surrogacy that can be done far more cheaply than in the United States and elsewhere. It is a booming — and largely unregulated — business with thousands of clinics across India as the backbone of an estimated $400 million-a-year industry, according to a study by Sama, a New Delhi-based advocacy group for women and children.

Critics have long said that fertility clinics and their clients exploit surrogate mothers — often poor and illiterate women from rural areas who are paid little. A surrogate mother profiled in The Washington Post was paid $8,000: an amount 12 times what she made as a garment worker.

Abuses abound, however, and the practice has been derided as “rent-a-womb.” India’s own Supreme Court recently called it “surrogacy tourism” and called for a ban.

The government submitted an affidavit to the Supreme Court on Wednesday saying it “does not support commercial surrogacy” and that “no foreigners can avail surrogacy services in India,” although the service would be still available to Indian couples.

India has been trying to pass a new Assisted Reproductive Technologies Act since 2010, and a draft of the legislation up for public comment through Nov. 15 does not specify the ban on foreign couples. But it suggests stricter regulations on the practice such as limiting the number of surrogate births from a mother to one.

However, the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare is pushing for an outright ban on allowing foreign couples to hire Indian surrogates, activists say. In 2012, the government banned singles and homosexuals from abroad from coming to India to use surrogates.

“In meetings officials have said foreign nationals are exploiting our women,” said Manasi Mishra, who did a survey on surrogacy for the Center for Social Research in New Delhi and has been a part of the discussion on the new law.

“We don’t agree there should be a ban on foreign nationals coming here for surrogate babies. We have been asking for regulating the industry. The industry has grown so much. If you ban it, everything will go underground and illegal.”

India and the United States are among a handful of countries where the practice of in-vitro fertilization and embryo transfer is allowed. Thailand just banned it recently. More than 6,000 surrogate babies are born in India per year, about half of them to foreign couples, according to one industry estimate.

“We are taken aback by the government’s stand against foreign nationals,” said Jagatjeet Singh, a surrogacy consultant in New Delhi. “On one hand, the government is promoting foreign investment and the medical tourism industry. And on the other, they are talking of banning foreign nationals from coming to India for surrogate babies. There are dual standards.”

Why not harbour the same respect for SRK who donates crores without blinking an eyelid and also does not publicize it!

        sputnik 12 years ago

There is no need to bring in SRK here or in your post to criticize Aamir and his show.

”So is selling/buying some women to get married is not ok but selling/buying women’s body to have a child is ok?”

    – I may be mistaken, but selling or buying of girls happens without their consent. Whereas I think it is a woman’s choice if she wishes to lend her womb and be a surrogate mother! I don’t think Aamir Khan and Kiran Rao got a slave to carry their baby! A surrogate mother is certainly not comparable to a girl bought and trafficked!

And what is this about real or fake intellectuals? The experts on the show were doctors, lawyers and journalists only! It’s not like they talked only to routine people but not a single qualified expert!

    • Author
      sputnik 12 years ago

How can you be sure that it is all a women’s choice if she wants to be a surrogate mother? She might be forced too by her family because of poverty. I don’t think any women offers her womb just like that – there has to be some money involved.

You don’t think it is wrong to avail some women’s body just for your selfish need of having a biological child?

The bigger point here is that the person who is so concerned about these female children did not decide to adopt a female child.

And lastly the show needs a serious anchor not an actor who is “acting” – being fake – this is not Taare Zameen Par.

    @hithere,

“I personally don’t mind if you are not able to have baby for medical reasons. I do mind if perfectly healthy people do it because they have money. My point in reply to parul was the same – that if a woman is willing to go through the whole nine months of pregnancy for someone else then she really needs money. So it basically boils down to exploitation of someone’s poverty in most cases.

I understand people wanting to have their own child but if nature has not been kind enough to them then why not go for adoption rather than exploit someone’s need for money.

I am not comfortable with the idea of infanticide (male or female) unless it is medically advised or its a rape child.

      Too funny..

I do agree Aamir sometimes seems very genuine and sometimes too fake because he wants to look genuine. Of all the interviews Arnab one was good. I watched Diya and baati..he sucked.

  9. narad_muni 12 years ago

The show is dull and nothing new…
On top of that, Aamir’s fakeness and TZP hangover makes it a pain to watch…

After all the hype, this sure is a letdown!

    • aryan 12 years ago

There is nothing new in this show.
the format seemed to be a take on The Oprah Winfrey Show. Makes us wonder if Aamir Khan is bringing about a small revolution in the country.

I read some review which pointed the same thing about better sex ratios in Muslims but the reviewer was taking up an issue with the first lady being Muslim and coming up with some nonsense about right wing people viewing Muslims in bad light.

Virendra Vidrohi who appears in this episode at 48 min is AAP candidate from Alwar, Rajasthan. The video doesn’t play when embedded here so here is a direct link.
