Sanket’s review: “Son of Sardaar” suffers from second half syndrome.

Cast: Ajay devgn, Sanjay Dutt, Sonakshi Sinha, Juhi Chawla.

Director: Ashwini Dhir

Length: 2.15 hours approximately

It’s not a bad thought to make a film which has everything going over-the-top be it action or comedy or dialogue delivery. But that will be accepted only if it’s done with conviction and coherency. SON OF SARDAAR, the much awaited Diwali outing is disappointing a film which promises so much fun in first half but gets totally on different route when the lights are off after the interval.

The film starts slowly. The cameo involving Salman Khan surely doesn’t add much to the film. But just when Ajay devgn is off to a train to land back toPunjab, SON OF SARDAAR catches up the flight. The DDLJ spoof is hilarious. The whole train scene will catch you up in splits. All the PJs have that innocent feel to them. Then the excellently choreographed “Rani tu main Raja” makes a mark. But the story is hardly established. The scene just before intermission, which lasts for at-least 10 minutes, could have been done with strong scissors to edit. It’s a dragged scene. But all in all, few hilarious moments makes SON OF SARDAAR an enjoyable ride for first half.

What comes in second half is bleary and completely contrived. Also there are as many as four songs in second half of the film which doesn’t connect at all within the feel of the film. The emotional portions of the film will leave you exhausted. The action scene when Ajay Devgn is on horse is so poorly choreographed and shot, that you beg for its end. Also the climax fight is yawn-inducing. And here is when Rohit Shetty strikes off your head. His car-obsessed action scenes are anyway better than those lazily and shoddily directed action scenes of this film. And this way, this one suffers from the popular “second half syndrome”.

Music is just about average. With half dozen songs in this film, it was easy for anyone to think of chopping at-least two or three songs. :Rani main tu raja”, “Bichdann” and to an extent “Po Po” are pleasant enough for ears. This film also goes boring because it’s very ill directed. The drama is never build, and still the film heavily concentrates on it. The dialogues, particularly delivered by Sanjay Dutt are mostly embarrassing.

Ajay devgn is good. He plays his part well, but his role saddles his performance. Sanjay Dutt is decent, but very unconvincing when he displays his shy towards Juhi Chawla. Sonakshi Sinha carries enough spark and delivers a very restrained performance in her limited screen time. Juhi Chawla is effective. Rest all are passable.

SON OF SARDAAR has a good first half, but a tad long second half with too many setbacks. Still, not a Diwali bonanza, but surely an average watch! Go for it only if you have nothing better to do.

Rating- 2/5 (Average)

well written review Sanket…I have no interest to watch this movie but I want film makers not to blindly jump on the masala bandwagon…Even if they do, they should make it a good masala film.

SOS is not doing well at metros but is doing excellent in smaller cities and interiors of UP/CI /rajasthan/Gujarat.
