Sanket’s Review: “Heroine” isn’t bad. It’s just that it’s not good.

Cast: Kareenan Kapoor, Randeep Hooda, DIvya Dutta, Arjun Rampal, Sanjay Suri, Ranvir Shorey.

Director: Madhur Bhandarkar

Length: 2.30 hours approximately.

From a gay make up designer to a provoking journalist to a smart PR worker, Bhandarkar involves every type of single stereotype that he could have. That’s not a problem yet! The problem with these characters is that they have been served with very lame dialogues and mostly the characters are converted into caricatures who definitely serve you few unintentional laughs. One can easily make out that there wasn’t much interest shown in the making of the film. The reason is because neither the writers’ script worked nor the editor’s scissors! Even the dependent Bhandarkar’s execution was shoddy! Not that the film is bad, but its just not good!

The film also resembles Bhandarkar’s successful FASHION. Over-consumption of alcohol, smoking etc. reminds you of Kangana Ranaut in FASHION. Where as the curveball in Kareena’s career in HEROINE due to personal relationships has lot to match with something of same line in Priyanka’s role in FASHION.

The film has some interesting things happening in first half. The whole Randeep Hooda- Kareena Kapoor track is engaging and is well established. But sadly the writers failed to convert this same story into a poignant one post-intermission where there was bit of scope. Anyways, the first half isn’t as unconvincing and corny as the second half is. The reason is because there are too many sub-plots registering here. However its not easy for anyone to guess out what was the main plot of the film? We see our lady protagonist shifting speedily between high and low points of career. It actually confuses the viewers with whether the film is about how the “Heroine” is rising or how is she “drowning”!

The second half starts well with the Shahana Goswami – Kareena Kapoor track. Although the lesbian part of it was highly avoidable! What was that! Anyways, the film also catch the flight in last 15 minutes but by then its too late for the film to pull up the socks. The middle portion of second half is yawn inducing, especially because the screenplay lacks any strength to bridge the gap between a scene to another.

Music is not encouraging except for “Halkat Jawaani”. The background score though runs within the plot and circumstances of the film. Dialogues are absolute trash. The story and screenplay are major letdown of the enterprise along-with Bhandarkar’s disappointing direction.

HEROINE is Kareena Kapoor’s show all the way. She looks fabulous and performs very well. Definitely not an award worthy performance but still a very good job done in this otherwise lukewarm film! Divya Dutt and Randeep Hooda are other two actors who have lend a good support in their brief characters. Shahana Goswami does show some confidence but the material written for her is very poor. Rest all like Arjun Rampal, Sanjay Suri, Ranvir Shorey etc fails to impress.

HEROINE isn’t a must watch film, but it isn’t an unwatchable affair either! The film surely disappoints, though Kareena never does. Its mediocre attempt from the main team- Writers and director!

Rating- 2/5 (Average).
