Thanks. Most of the things are known but always good to hear.

One thing which bothers me is that Ramesh Sippy who is the director is never on shows talking in details but Salim-Javed is; As if the duo are the directors.

Have not seen these videos. So will comment on them after watching.

Good point on Ramesh Sippy. He is at award shows but have not seen many interviews of his on Sholay.

There used to be a very good Star Talk Interview of his with Vir Sangvi on Youtube which has been removed.

Here is one old interview of Ramesh Sippy talking about Sholay.

Somehow I see the way Ramesh Sippy speaks is far from the sensibilities of Sholay and near to Salim-Javed 🙂

great great interview. loved their talk about the casting, story , setting to what the detractors had to say. even if one doesnt know what salim-javed are, just listening to them one can see how intelligent and sure of their craft they are.

Excellent Interview. Loved it. Javed’s observation that there are two opposite ends of the spectrum in the characters of Thakur and Gabbar, Jai and Veeru, Basanthi and Radha and that it was not planned but covered all sorts of emotions was very good. Salim Khan’s point about their not being any back stories for Jai or Veeru’s or Gabbar’s behavior was very good.

Javed saying that there were no socio-political or socio-economic reasons for the characters makes the point that I always make that some people over read and come up with nonsensical opinions which the directors/writers never intended. Its always better to hear from the writers/directors who created the movie than some self proclaimed experts.

Last part of the interview where Salim Khan took all the blame and the way Javed responded was very good. But one can tell that Salim was more hurt at the split.

already saw the interview 3 times. its that good.

“Javed’s observation that there are two opposite ends of the spectrum in the characters”

yes but note how he said that they had not pre-planned it. their characters eventually shaped up that way after the script

I already mentioned in my comment – “and that it was not planned” 🙂

Also liked the part where they accepted that they were arrogant and said that they had “arrogance of clarity”.

    Fantastic interview! Absolutely loved it!

Agree with Sputnik that it was great to hear their views on Sholay’s characters. Today’s social media has opened up possibilities for overenthusiastic bloggers to read too much into characters and situations. It is heart warming to see that some times, some characters behave they do, just because that is how they are. Of course, there is a psychological reason for everyone’s behavior but it need not always be dissected in every case.

Another thing worth noting and learning from both of them is how gracefully and calmly they answered questions and ga ve opinions. There was no big talk about how they were better than others, no attempt at bashing or belittling RGV (even though he criminally desecrated their work), no arrogance so to speak. The current generation (and I daresay, even Amitabh, who at times, comes across as arrogant, snobbish and self-involved via his blog posts/tweets/interviews) has a lot to learn from both.
