    Good post. Great one infact.

I am not sure about your choices. All recent singers dont have individuality for me like they used to be before (earlier singers till Udit / Kumar Sanu)

  2. aryan 10 years ago

    @Baba

Excellent post very different almost agree all yours choices except the last one Yuhi chala chal.

    • Ipman 10 years ago

thanks aryan. regarding yun hi chala chal rahi,i think udit was a bit misfit. rahmans songs sometimes dont allow traditional hindi playback singing. there are places where the beats leave udit and he is still not done because he has a habit of pronouncing each and every word due to this north indian background. rahmans song dont necessarily allow so much pronunciation!

Sonu Nigam is a cheapest copy of M Rafi.
Kumar Sanu is chepeast one of Kishore Kumar.

For my life I couldnt figure out how one could like them.

Shaan falls in same category – though not imitation note by note like Sonu, he doesnt have individuality.

Rahman as a singer. Hmm – he is best when he is singing Tamil or Sufi songs. Khwaja mere Khwaja was his best.

    • Anjanpur685Miles 10 years ago

The last singer who stood out in individuality was Udit. Period. (didn’t imitate anyone)

      • Anjanpur685Miles 10 years ago

Oops I forgot. Last one is Mika. Outstanding singer and who has individuality (is not a cheap copy of anyone).

        • sauravjha 10 years ago

I beg to differ sir. Rafi saab singing had a huge influence on Udit Narayan’s singing with latter confirming it too in many of his interviews. If you notice whenever Udit slows(kind of whispers) his voice you can’t help but find similarity with many of Rafi Saab’s “soft” numbers. So there comes your ‘imitation’ thing. Each of these singers Abhijit, Kumar took something from Kishore da whereas Sonu and Udit too from Rafi.

          • Anjanpur685Miles 10 years ago

            Udit imitating Rafi?

Give me a break please !!. He may have told that out of respect of he tried to imitate in real – but he always sounded original.

Take for example Mika in recent times – does he carry any baggage of Rafi or Kishore Kumar? Udit was like that back in 90s.

      • sputnik 10 years ago

Agree with @sauravjha. Udit’s voice had individuality but his style was definitely inspired from Rafi’s singing. Sonu not only copies Rafi’s style but also his voice.

I had mentioned this before somewhere else too. The best example of Udit’s style being similar to Rafi is the song Mehndi Laga Ke Rakhne. The part where he sings “Ud Ud Ke Teri Zulfein” specially Zulfein is trademark Rafi. Listen from 1:55.

        • Anjanpur685Miles 10 years ago

Hmm, I agree there. But what about him being most individualistic voice in his time? Just because of 1-2/3 or a dozen songs or paras u categorize him whereas likes of Sanu and Sonu, Abhijeet have/had made career out of Rafi/Kk.

Did Udit made a career out of imitating? Like them?
          He always sounded different.

        • Ipman 10 years ago

mai yahan hoon yahan from veer zara is ditto rafi too. agreed that sonu even copies rafi voice. listen to this song, sonu sounds almost like rafi

          https://youtube.com/watch?v=5pr476HoMOE

    • Ipman 10 years ago

i dont remember correctly but i think all of udit, ksanu and abhijeet have agreed that they imitate kishore. personally i like sanu a lot. though sanu has breathing issues in singing. i have seen him getting winded in songs where you need to go in high pitch too often. udit did better in those songs. Vinod Rathod could do very well in such songs. though his voice is not as good as them

      • Drama8Queen 6 years ago

Sanu does Nasal Singing. Except a few songs,I didn’t like that quality in his singing..

  4. Ipman 10 years ago

Vinod rathod was outstanding in this song

  5. Anjanpur685Miles 10 years ago

Kishore Kumar imitated Saigal in initial phase of his career. Do we brand him a copy of Saigal now?

    • sputnik 10 years ago

Yes both Kishore and Mukesh were clones of Saigal when they started out but they did have their individual voices later on. And I think even Sanu had his own individual voice later on even though he started as a Kishore clone. Abhijeet had his own voice too.

I think all Bollywood singers up to Sonu Nigam fall into either the Kishore or Rafi school of singing. The singer has to develop his individual voice at least if not style if he wants to really stand out. Sonu still sings like Rafi and is doing Rafi tributes even this late in his career. I am not sure if Kishore/Sanu were doing Saigal/Kishore tributes that late in their careers.

Agree with you on Mika. The first time I heard Saavan Mein Lag Gayee Aag I did not like the song and I did not like Mika’s voice either. I thought he got the chance only because he was Daler’s younger brother. But the song grew on me and I started liking that song. He has his own voice and style. Even when he sings a hit Kishore song like Aapka Kya Hoga Janabe Ali he doesn’t try to copy Kishore.

      • Ipman 10 years ago

it is said that babul supriyo copies sanu. so sanu does have individual voice at some level. sonu had lot of clones in the mid 2000s when he was at his peak. many of the young aspiring singers at indian idol, sa re ga ma etc used to copy him

        • Anjanpur685Miles 10 years ago

          Really? Are you kidding?

Copying a copycat is a compliment? I dont know.

          • Ipman 10 years ago

inspiration is not the same as copying. sanu and kishore voice is not the same. neither is udit and rafi. but check out babul supriyo. he tries to sound like sanu 😉

  6. sputnik 10 years ago

    Very good post @baba-ji

You should have posted the Don song sung by both Kumar Sanu and Udit too because that would have kind of enforced your point.

Don’t like Shankar Mahadevan’s singing usually. Love his Dil Chahta Hai title song and Breathless song though. He sings almost all songs where he is the composer. He was bad in the Jhoom Barabar song.

Rahat was too nasal in the Teri Meri song. Agree that Sonu would have been better.

I think Anusha Dandekar would have been good with the Kamli song.

I think Shail was ok with Yeh Tera Zikr but its a Hariharan song. I think Hariharan would have been best with it.

Don’t like Sonu’s singing in Saathiya title song. The original Tamil song was sung by Hariharan, Clinton Cerejo, Dominique Cerejo.

And as far as playback singing is concerned I feel its a wrong singer if its not Sanu for all SRK songs, Udit for all Aamir songs and SPB for all Salman songs 🙂

    • Anjanpur685Miles 10 years ago

Chalo Babaji sahi hai aapke hisaab se 🙂

Ab ye batao mai jo keh raha tha Mika aur Udit ke baare mein – usse maante ho? Nahin maan te ho to koin baat nahin.

Lekin kam se kam zikr to karo bhai…

    • Ipman 10 years ago

is anusha dandekar known for her singing? i think you may be talking about anushka manchanda. suzanne d’mello nails the songs of dhoom/race genre. check out her songs of similar genre. dominique cerejo is also a good singer so is sneha khanwalkar

      • sputnik 10 years ago

Yeah I was talking about Anushka Manchanda. I got confused because of similar sounding names and both being VJ’s. She sang the song Allah Duhai Hai from Race 2.

  7. Dhamaka 10 years ago

Good post Baba . Just want to add that all songs sung by Himesh should have been Sung by others

    • Anjanpur685Miles 10 years ago

LOL, disagree again. Himmesh songs are gem and in his voice only (not kidding).

      • sputnik 10 years ago

For all the Himesh fans he has lost 20 Kg for a role and is now a method actor 🙂

  8. Dhamaka 10 years ago

Lol Sputnik 🙂 amazing pose by Sir Himesh .
Ritz Himesh is different and as you said does not carry the baggage of rafi and kishore 🙂
Other different singer in recent times is Altaf Raja 🙂

    • Anjanpur685Miles 10 years ago

Dhamaka, I was not joking about Udit or Mika. Even for Himmesh.

You can laugh it off as a joke but its the truth. They dont carry any baggage and are extermely popular and liked. Unlike sissies like Sonu or Sanu – who are pathetic in each and every sense as per me and sans any originality or personality.

  9. Manish 10 years ago

Good post … Hearing the original khaike pan i never liked the srk movie one …

agree teri meri ke liye sonu best he is great for soft romantic songs …

Saathiya i liked the song but yes agree with Ar it myt have been better …

Mika i have always loved 🙂 even more than Daler but i believe daler technically is better singer with more range

I like arijit a lot nowadays .. one singer whose voice i can recognize from amongst new ones ..i find most of his song sung w heartily ( uppar uppar se gaya nahi lagta )

  10. mate 10 years ago

    LoL.
Arijit is a decent singer but to say he is distinguisable from others is totally wrong, even his biggest hit song appears to be an Atif Aslam’s song, at first even I thought it was sung by Atif, majority of my friends who love Tum Hi Ho and often listen to it and are not aware of Arijit, they still believe it is an Atif’s song. But he is amongst those few singers who can change his voice, listen to ‘Kashmir Main Tu’ he sounds like Udit Narayan, while in some songs he sounds like Mohit. Till yet, he is only inspired from other singers. In most of his songs, he adopted Atif’s voice or his voice has great resemblence with him, while in few, he imitates others. Who told him that changing voice is not a quality or any criteria to judge a singer’s ‘verstallity’ and most of the contestants those appeared in different music reality shows where they want to show their ‘verstallity’ that they can sing any song of any singer.
I think the post should be titled as the most appropriate voices for the songs, because there are positives and negatives in each singer, for example Teri Meri may be suited to Sonu’s voice more, or Deler Mehdi’s voice may be more appropriate for JBJ, but as a singer, they are much much much.. behind those who actually sung those songs.

    • Manish 10 years ago

LOL :3 i didnt put it as general comment i said it specifically when i wrote
      “I can recognize ”

I no where wrote “Arijit’s voice is recognizable” as in general …

So what i said is Totally true

  11. Ipman 10 years ago

arijit does copy atif aslam, mustafa zahid etc for some songs. but recently all the songs that i found interesting somehow had arijit in them. may be its the kind of songs he is getting or his hard work but its doing well for him. my biggest surprise was when i read he sung raabta.
