My take on Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani

Prologue

In India and most of the cinema outside, the audience stresses a lot of the Genre of the film. Is it a Romance..Or a comedy or an Action..or the Amalgamated features like Cop-Drama, Courtroom-Drama, Romantic Comedy, Action-thriller.. etc.
What is fascinating is that while it is very much possible that a writer, set out to write a Cop-Drama or a Rom-Com..it is equally possible that someone just a wrote story that came to his pen and it may borrow or be qualified for a genre or two.

Review:

Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani is all about what the title says. It tells you a story about the dreams, aspirations, energy, awkwardness, inhibitions, ignorance and a whole lot of other emotional characteristics of a person who is new to adulthood and is out there to take the world by himself/herself and may or may not be ready to come out of their parents’s shell.

The first half of the film deals with Ranbir’s ambitions, Deepika’s struggle (to deal with herself and the world), Aditya Roy Kapoor’s ignorance and Kalki’s emotions. Its fascinating to see the four gel with each other and notice (and not notice) how different they are. Its interesting how the director does manage to focus on all of them and give the characters their due. The flaw in the first half is that it gets a little repetitive and the story pretty much remains stagnant. Dil Chahta hai’s first half dealt with College Graduate adults too but the impact was much more…Some more work could have been done in the first half (less songs maybe).

The second half is where the main power of the film is. I would like to mention, that all the people who are thinking that its a Romantic Comedy may be wrong. The second half shows that why this is more of a coming of age + friendship story and that Romance is just a part of it. A proof of this is the fact that barring the last 10 minutes or so, the second half essentially features the relationship between the friends rather than the love between the leads.

People (like me) who have been out of their homeland for a long time in a different country (and especially if they came as a student), would relate to the second half a lot. I could relate word for word, during the confrontation scene between Ranbir and Aditya Roy Kapoor. Their are so many instances of importance of friendship and how selfless friends are for each other. The director made a great attempt at keeping the love story separate from the friendship part and that works beautifully. The love story part is fine too and its handled quite nicely ..Again the songs and some unnecessary Hurry in the scene could have been avoided.

All the four actors-Ranbir, Deepika, Kalki and Aditya Roy Kapoor perform fabulously. Kalki probably after Dev D did a good job..Infact she was great in her role. Aditya Roy Kapoor played his part rather well..(although he may just become the male Kangna Ranaut)..Ranbir Kapoor acted quite fine..This role doesn’t need any superlative acting and hence his acting is quite regular but fortunately for him fits the character. Deepika Padukone is the best of the lot for me. She was mind blowing in the first half..Her expressions were bang on and so was her dialog delivery. She is someone who can repetitive very easily..but fortunately she was very different and pleasantly surprising in her portrayal of a class topper girl who only studies (I would like to mention though, the director shouldn’t have made her look so sexy in those tiny shorts and skirts, because geeky and those legs are like a 1 in 20 million combo ..hence highly unbelievable). Her performance in the final minutes is also applause worthy.

Ayan Mukherjee has made a fine film. Its not anything great but its not avoidable too. It takes some unnecessary liberties and tries to make things easy for itself..yet it doesn’t feel bad watching it. He’s written a story about how the Jawaani is Deewani and what happens after you reach your peak..and it should be taken like that rather than classifying it into some Rom-Com.

7 on 10.

Epilogue.

Faaroq Sheikh is a genius. In his 5 minute scene (the second half) with Ranbir Kapoor, he delivers the best moment of the film. On a personal level, I could totally relate to it..as once upon a time I too was leaving my country and had a conversation with my father.

I was going to avoid it but after reading FS, Utkal and Sup’s views I may watch it. Besides I had loved WUS by this director.

    Good Prolog Sup.

Lol votes are more than views. It is being voted by fewer desperates than most who actually viewed it or read it. It also could be the work of an individual or stalker.

This is to the person who is continuously voting 1 star for this post. I think I know who you are – at least I know you are from Faisalabad, Pakistan. What you are doing is not cool. This is height of insecurity – voting 1 star to a post repeatedly just because this review is positive towards the movie.

If you keep doing this I will ban you from the site and I will block the website completely from your IP Address.

How did Sputnik’s warning ended Suprab’s stalker?

Saw this shit yesterday with family.

Basically this movie is a 2.5 hours advertisement for drinking alcohol and the ending is copied from Akele Hum Akele tum.

Sorry, but I lost all the goodwill/liking for Ranbir whatsoever he had after WUS, APKGK and Rocket singh.

I dont have any issues with there being very less of plot/story – but whatever character development details/ emotions shown are so superficial that it is puke worthy. I don’t remember the last time I saw so bad movie – even KKHH which I watched in cinemas was better than this melodrama. There is a Karan Johar stamp all over the movie.

Its inspired by many movies in last decade as pointed out by many ..The dumb girls in train and dumb boyfriend of Deepika are copied from DCH…many things copied from ZNMD but its ok.

The climax is copied from Akele Hum Akele Tum. In AHAT Manisha closes doors to outside world (her career) because of her Hubby Aamir – here Ranbir gives up his hobby/life for Deepika. Its a regressive ending. Why doesnt she move with him? Or if she is not that type – then give him that freedom and be happy with it. She is happy curbing his freedom – Its a typical Indian mentality where girls stop guys from eating non-veg etc after marriage.

Only positive thing about the movie was Deepika. The movie had so many regressive and melodramatic dialogues – if any other actress was there it would have been a cry-fest and more melodramatic. But Deepika gets it right – her expressions and acting is very matured.

Ranbir is average. His dancing is also overrated. In Battameez Dil song he has his only trademark moves – but after an antara there is a fast beat music and he cant dance there – simple steps given to him proving he is a limited dancer. He mouths dialogues with plain face and no expression in eyes. Aditya of Action Replayy fame is another overrated ass – shakes his face while starting any dialogue.

Liked only 1-2 dialogues after interval (not full scenes – only dialogues). “Zindagi me kuch na kuch khona padta hai” etc ..at that sunset scene…and some other.

Heck, the movie is so ghanta kirtan babaji ka that cant even remember a single scene from it. This makes even SRK romantic movies look good!!

“Heck, the movie is so ghanta kirtan babaji ka that cant even remember a single scene from it.”

i had similar thoughts on the movie ritz. infact when suprabh wrote the review 2 days later of film release, i could not come up with much counter points as i had already forgotten most of the film and scenes by that time 😀

I want to ask one question to so called “youngistan” ppl who are liking this movie so much and praising direction/acting of ranbir and aditya ..
Have u guys ever seen second half of PKP? For me its most close to reality for youth and a masterpiece. The direction, acting etc.
Why doesn’t anyone give a second chance to Vikrant or Varun or Nishant?

Ok yes – the director’s second movie I didnt see but still PKP is like a Sholey in a way (yes its one dimensional but still a jewel) Each and every scene in second half is well crafted – great work showing relationships / emotions. Even background music, editing is flawless.

Besides, As far as star “material” is concerned …ppl praising Aditya Roy Kapoor and Ranbir should realize that there is someone called as Sushant Singh Rajput who is someone to watch out for in future..who is far more talented in every department than these guys…be it acting, dancing or looks.

      Suprabh 11 years ago

      Ritz,

I am replying to your comments even though I am past my youngistan 😀

I too think PKP is a masterpiece …I loved the first half and liked the second half even more..

P.S. Varun got his second chance in aakash Vani…Nishant in Chashme Buddoor… dont know about Vikrant.

Btw, The director’s second movie Akash Vani was a big big disappointment.

As far as acting of Aditya or Ranbir in YJHD is concerned..I feel they were regular– nothing great (as I have mentioned in my review)..

Now the real reason why I replied 😀

I don’t think much of Sushant overrated Rajput. I think he just earn some browny points because of the character he was portraying..There was nothing extraordinary about his acting in Kai Po che. I feel Amit Sadh was the best of the lot…and he did a better job than many in their debut films..He owned the climax especially (the riots scene).

Here’s my review of Aakash vani

Saw Akaash Vaani and I have to say I’m very very disappointed. Not because it wasn’t a funny movie coming from the director of Pyaar ka Punchnama but because the movie wasted a lot of time in displaying cliches- something that didn’t exist at all in PKP.

The movie’s first 30-40 minutes are a big , big bore. Why Mr Ranjan, Why? didn’t you see that your leads don’t really have that chemistry..Being the writer of the lines of PKP, didn’t you see that most of AV lines were cheesy? Anyways, I did sit through all those lines and 3 songs in first 45 minutes because I knew this guy will have a story to tell.

Luv Ranjan’s real story starts almost just before the interval. The issue that movie takes up is an important one and unfortunately quite pertinent to Indian society too. There was a debate going on between Sanket and Yakuza a while back as to the issue was something that could have been solved by a simple discussion or not. I would say it wasn’t as easy as Sanket argued or as difficult as yakuza thought it was. it was somewhere in between. Anyways, thats not what my problem with the film was.

I felt AkaashVaani became a really manipulative film in the second half. The director moulded the film and the issue to a point of manipulating the audience just like Taare Zameen Par. Why I say that is because, even the the intention of both films were noble, they twisted the movie in a way that it went the sympathy route rather than a fair route.

    **SPOILERS**

the parents were blamed for a reason but I’d say, the way they showed the Girl like a hlepless someone, it kind of just came out more depressing than in some practical scenario for a new age girl

It was the couple who were responsible for the whole thing to begin with and then they hit back at the parents..No body forced them to do anything.

    *******

I liked Susant Singh Rajput but Ranbir is beyond the reach of these kids. Many complaint abt Ranbir is hyped by media to which i would say, they have chosen the right candidate. He is the best we hav at present in young slot.

    @Sup

The other guy may have acted well but I was talking about star material. I don’t find him overrated at all.

Oh I thought you are talking about Raj Kumar Yadav. Personally I liked him in Kai Po che. Yes Amit was good too esp a newcomer.

Saw WUS again in parts, and the first drastic change in this film and YJHD is that WUS is devoid of any unnecessary sexual jokes and unnecessary over-flirting or showcasing higher class habits – even if both the leads are staying together!

Makes me sure that Karan Johar had more say in YJHD.
