My Issues with Hrithik Roshan

This is the second in my series of β€œMy Issues with XYZ star”. The first one is here. I will be highlighting my issues with each star/actor as usual

1) Hrithik’s biggest issue probably is he has a unique record of having done only 18 films at the age of 39 years. I am not sure of any other actor having such low number of films when you are nearing past your expiry date as a star. No other star had such low number of films at almost 40.

2) The failure after KNPH paralyzed him mentally to such an extent that he has never quite recovered from. He has a paranoia that if he does 2 or more films in a year, he will again go back to that post-KNPH phase. This makes him overwork in a film for prolonged periods of time which doesn’t necessarily result in a better film. It seems to have just become a means for him to delude himself that he is not working “hastily”.

3) Like Aamir, his role model, he thinks all his films push the boundaries in cinema. So he will praise a Krrish and Jodha Akbar or a Kites all in equal measure. He will call them soulful, divine journey etc. πŸ˜‰

4) He doesn’t have a single film that could be argued as an all time great or path breaking. Some ppl argue he has done a ZNMD, JA or an AP. May be good films for the time they came in but none of them are truly good or path breaking. Then what is the superiority attitude about?

5) In his mind, he thinks he is the greatest actor in the world and can nail any role, when truth is there are only a handful of roles which he is able to carry off, like most of his contemporaries, who also are in delusion that they can pull off any role. From what I have seen, his act works when he is not trying to show off that he can act, where is subtle and speaks less (ZNMD/AP). He thinks he was great in Guzaarish but that OTT role is just not cut out for him.

6) He thinks he is the greatest dancer in India but he doesn’t have the mind of a dancer. Let truth be told he is probably the best dancer in BW but certainly not in India. Most of the times, especially off-screen, I have seen him doing only steps that he has done previously in his films. He is not able to innovate and think like professional dancers. Also his dancing seems largely inspired from MJ. The world has moved on from MJ. A lot of aerial and ground techniques have been incorporated ( B-boying, capoeira, parkour moves etc) in modern dancing and Hrithik’s moves, though good, are not at all comparable to what kids and youth do in even Indian dance shows, let alone the International ones.

    Aren’t 1 & 2 the same issue πŸ˜‰

Agree that the failure of his movies after his initial super success affected him a lot. When he first came on the scene with KNPH I thought he would be the next No 1 star and he would be like Amitabh to SRK being Rajesh Khanna. But he frittered away all the advantage that he had by doing bad films and trying to ape SRK in some of them. I think he should have never done that K3G role. Even when he had great success in a year with Dhoom 2 and Krrish he did not consolidate his position.

On 3 – All actors praise their next release as the best thing.

Agree that he doesn’t have a single film that could be argued as an all time great or path breaking. ZNMD, Lakshya and Agneepath are his good movies.

    5) Did not like him in Guzaarish though he put a lot of effort in it.

    6) He is the best dancer in Bollywood but the dancing/choreography has not been good for some of his songs. Some of his dances look very feminine and sometimes it feels like he is putting in a lot of effort.

yes πŸ˜€ 3,4 are also related in some ways. but the 1st one is a factual statement and the 2nd one is what i perceive to be the reaoson for the low number of films.

yes he did come with a different star narrative with his first film. I think ppl proclaimed him as the next best thing after knph bcos of the Raj character that he played. He used to speak less, didnt over emote or quote filmy dialgues much. But in all his subsequent films, he played the “rohit” character more which was more like the usual conventional hero (over)acting and that got the best of him in all his films from 2002 to 2003 and eventually led to the mental block of doing less volume

  2. Soumya Dhar 11 years ago

hmm nicely put, but what really puts me off about hrithik in his off-screen intellectual superficial persona that he normally tries to put across in his interviews. He loves to think himself as a thoughtful inventive person & for him every film is a spiritual & inner journey for him, which is complete B.S & i am really tired of this fake superfluous attitude. I used to like him when was honest, humble , awkward & when he used to speak from his heart. Nowadays even if u ask him a straight question he will jabber about some gibberish obscure shiit which wud hardly make any sense. On top of that his reluctance to speak in hindi also aggravates my irritation .His work ethics though is completely professional & got to say he really gives his best in the characters he is playing but his sense of good script is pretty misplaced. He takes almost 2 years to get a character right & for movies like what ?? krrish 3 & bang bang :/ I think he chooses his films by instinct but he only cares about his character & not about the overall story, thats why he is yet to act in a truly groundbreaking movie which isnt bad as most mainstream actors in india hardly has that leverage either. I really liked ZNMD but he only did that film bcause suzzane forced him to it otherwise he wud have just sat on his pseudo intellect ass for another year watching clouds from his balcony & going through another spiritual experience.

    • Baba Ji 11 years ago

haha, excellent comment rex πŸ˜€ agree with everything. and yes i also find it very irritating when an interviewer asks him in hindi and he always replies in english. and whats worse, he is not fluent in engilsh either

    • Bineeta 7 years ago

Excellently put Saumya. I too think the same.

He keeps blabbering nonsense to even simple questions.
He surely thinks very highly of himself.

  3. Soumya Dhar 11 years ago

Regarding his dancing- he is a decent dancer but he is not spontaneous. The whole dance aura around him is a result of rigorous rehearsals & practice & every step he performs on stage is manufactured & has zero spontaneity in them. His unspontaneous persona becomes more highlighted whenever he is invited to dance offscreen , here he comes across completely out of his depth & to cover it up he only repeats his done to death steps from films. This is not necessarily a bad thing & the efforts he put through is completely visible which again sometimes make his dance steps looked staged & mechanical.

    • Baba Ji 11 years ago

he has a flexible body and so some steps look good on him. but he is not creative like say a prabhudeva. he cannot create steps of his own.and he has a limited number of moves in his kitty. if you notice, he keeps repeating them time and again (the krazzy 4 wave, that main aisa kyu hoon chest move etc).

    • Baba Ji 11 years ago

woudl like to add on “spontaneity” and the term “natural dancing” too. i dont think there is any such thing as a “natural dancer”. yes you can be a natural non-dancer πŸ˜‰ . any kind of dance form needs years of practice and repetition .professional dancers slog themselves each day to get marginally better from the previous day. and this kind of continuous repetiton results in dancing becoming a second-nature to them and so they become “spontaneous”. no one is born a natural dancer.its not possible especially the advanced dance forms. some ppl , especialy uncles, think moving the pelvic in weddings is natural dancing. its just a way to embarass urself :3

    • Soumya Dhar 11 years ago

Yup, he does repeat himself & yes he uses his greek god like physique to great effect & creates an illusion . he is excellent when it comes to locking , popping & slow break & thats about it. Nething other than that is not only beyond his skill set but also beyond his rigorous practice regimes because styles like b-buoying & hip hop are damn hard to fake if u dont have the feel of it. The cartwheel & head stand done in that song in kites was done by a professional & not by him. He is from an era where slow break dancing was a rage because of MJ.

    • Baba Ji 11 years ago

agreed completely. yes he had probably used body double at places and also wires.he had used wires/vfx in its magic (kmg) too

    • Soumya Dhar 11 years ago

Yes, spontaneity can be attained once u are a master of that art. But i dont think hrithik is a master . As i have said before he only mimicks the idea of dancing instead of really dancing with no strings attached & thats by why he will never become a spontaneous dancer.

    • Soumya Dhar 11 years ago

shahid has better skill sets in him than hrithik but often comes across a foot short in front of hrithik because he tries to mix too many things at the same time & on top of that his songs are saddled with some pretty atrocious choreography.

    • Baba Ji 11 years ago

yes he has merely adapted to bw dancing. i think before his debut, he had chalked down a plan for himself the qualiities that are needed to be a successful bw superstar and he adapted them. so right from the dancing to the 6 pack and to the conventional acting (which he does largely in RR films) all comes from that

    • Soumya Dhar 11 years ago

hrithik is deceitful & u gotto give credit to him for that πŸ˜‰

    • Baba Ji 11 years ago

yes and i think quite often shahid overdoes his moves to make extra impact πŸ˜‰ i was watching his agal bagal song recently from phata poster.shahid wriggles his leg in weird way πŸ˜€ he looks even shorter than he really is.he shudnt hv danced like that :3 check 1:01 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L899QuA1E24

    • Soumya Dhar 11 years ago

btw, i think ranbir is a natural dancer & reminds me a lot of salman khan in his younger days.

  4. ank_16n 11 years ago

How many films had Aamir done uptil the age of 40???

what type of pathbreaking movies Aamir has done???
i count only TZP,lagaan n 3Idiots as his path breaking movies rest are either good or bad πŸ˜›

similarly hr is not bad as compared too i think uptill now at 40 he has KMG as one same as aamir had at the same age of 40..!! πŸ˜‰

his problem is after the super year 2006 with 2 massive massive hits he took 16 months break which made it bad for him and another 2 years break after JA he hit a low with kites n guzaarish if he had managed to extract something more from 2006 he wud have been the best n no.1 star in BW…..those 4 years n just 1 movie was really bad decision…..
having said that with ZNMD n AP he he back n is roaring again n with k3 he will have his biggest grosser so that’s good..!!

Hope he does 2 movies or at least 1 movie every year which i think he is trying to do now..!!

so lets wait for krrish 3 it will blast its way at the BO.. πŸ˜›

    • Baba 11 years ago

Aamir did 31 films at 40

SRK did 43 films at 40

Salman did 51 films at 40

Akshay did 66 films at 40

Ranbir has 10 films at the age of 30

      • ank_16n 11 years ago

Akshay did 80 movies till age of 40 πŸ˜‰

  5. ank_16n 11 years ago

Baba BTW last time when u wrote such article on Ranbir he had a YJHD hope this time u get lucky for Hrithik..!! πŸ˜€ πŸ˜€

bhai Akki pe bhi likh do aisa article Thupakki remake se phele kya pata thupakki 300cr kar le tumhare luck se πŸ˜€

    • Baba 11 years ago

no, during thuppakki remake, i will make “NO issues with Akshay Kumar” post and write only one line in it – this is going to make 300 cr πŸ˜‰

  6. saurabh 11 years ago

    on 3rd point,
hw canu be sure that he has superiority attitude.. i have never read his interview showing this attitude. so need an example from author.
he try, that is the best thing about him, and he do film which are lil different at point of time like lakshya, JA…

    • Baba 11 years ago

from his interviews for the films . he seems to be excessively satisfied with all his roles. he once said ” I dont have the talent to do films like ready”. you can get the drift from such comments.

  7. Sanket Porwal 11 years ago

Baba Ji, you have points by thinking that “he thinks”. This is a very dicey thing about your post. No-one really knows what he thinks.

I found the first two points very similar. I slightly disagree here. The fact that he is still in the limelight is enough for him. The point would have sound crucial had he gone the downhill. So what if the volume of films he is doing is less. He is still a big thing in market. That takes care of Point no.1 and 2.

I agree partly with 4th point. KMG KNPH are memorable films. KMG was path-breaking IMO. Although yes, he do not have a DDLJ or a HAHK or 3I.

Rest points are based on only what you think. Not necessarily that is true.

And he does not have to be a spontaneous dancer. He is not a choreographer. He is actor first and he shows his spontaneity there. He obviously will follow choreographers instructions. He is excellent in dance and this is and added pluspoint to his repertoire.

    • Baba Ji 11 years ago

sanket – my assumptions are based on facts though. why would someone take 2 years to do a film like kites or 1 year for preparation for a film like bang bang unless one believe he is al pacino!

    • Sanket Porwal 11 years ago

Baba Ji- He never knew that Kites would be a dud. No one wants to make a bad film. The efforts were invested so that they can make a great film. I could see the ambition of makers behind Kites. Sadly there was no passion in the film and it bombed. But that doesn’t mean he thinks highly of himself. Kites was one of the most riskiest film at that time- in terms of storyline, grandeur, budget etc. The risk did not pay off.

    • Soumya Dhar 11 years ago

      sigh sanket.

  8. Sanket Porwal 11 years ago

Tanqeed Movies, why are these comments not getting post on Tanqeed?

  9. Suprabh 11 years ago

    1) I think most actors of new millennium era prefer to do one film a year or so..Since his debut in 2000, he has had a release every year except 2004 and 2007 …Not that bad I say? πŸ˜‰

    2)- totally agree

3)- Agree but that’s how most Indian stars are..except Akshay who knows that most his films are loud dialogues and unfunny scenes.

4)- Although this point is subjective- but I agree about it..but again which actor barring Aamir Khan have an all time great(Again subjective)

5)- I think he indeed is the most talented of the lot..although he can’t do comedy-simply falls flat there..

    6)- Don’t care although I do think he’s bollywood’s best dancer.

    • Baba 11 years ago

he had lakshya in 2004. yes he didnt have any release in 2005, 2007 and 2009.and see the pattern, two out of 3 breaks were take for his home production films. krrish came in 2006, JA came in 2008 and kites in 2010. again he took almost a 2 year break after AP for doing krrish 3.

  10. Bored 11 years ago

I think Hrithik’s main problem has been his Dad and his home productions. They give him BO numbers but slow him down. Every time he does a film for Filmkraft it means 2 year gap between releases – Krrish, Kites and now Krrish 3.

Maybe BO is most important to him. But ironically, his best works have all been with outside directors – Lakshya, Jodhaa Akbar, Guzaarish, ZNMD, AP. Out of these JA was a bit slow and Guzaarish had a few OTT (WTF) moments due to their respective directors. No ‘great masterpieces’, but i rate ZNMD and AP quite highly as films.

His main strength is that he is quite malleable and can be used very effectively by a director who knows his stuff. I tend to believe he is the most genre-independent star of the current lot. At the same time he chooses scripts by roles and not as a film. I thought he improved in this after ZNMD and AP. But now he is doing a Krrish 3 – so i still have my doubts.

Never cared abt his dancing nor his public appearances/interviews. He hardly keeps himself in the limelight except before a release – so it hardly matters imo. Nor has he been dancing except in his father’s movies.

    • Baba 11 years ago

actually znmd was recommended to him by suzaane, he never had the intention to do it. he would have most probably refused it just like he refused LBC. he did AP but not bcos of its script or its treatment but more bcos he wanted to play the iconic role of VDC

  11. Bored 11 years ago

Yes – if he was looking at films and not roles then he would have done much better. But whatever be the reasons, you cant deny him having done these films (ZNMD and AP) – so he gets the credit. Aamir obviously has the best eye for a good film – perhaps the only one in the current lot.

Btw, Akshay has signed Neeraj Pandey’s next – glad abt that. Special Chabbis was good but was not too lucky at the BO. Hopefully the next one will do better.

  12. Suprabh 11 years ago

I don’t know why AP is being perceived here as some great film here.. Hrithik was fantastic in it , no doubt..but as a film, it was more of a welcome break from the stereotype masala than a kickass film itself… It was an above average film. That’s it.

  13. Bored 11 years ago

Dont think anyone here claims AP is a great film.

In today’s age of rampant bastardized masala embarrassments, it holds a candle to the lost genre. And most importantly, it worked as a film – that is a rarity among the big budget star studded projects released in the last few years.

  14. Bored 11 years ago

And I should probably add this – from what i have seen, Hrithik is a star who has zero personality. That is the reason he can be used very effectively by a good director. At the same time, he can be very awkward under bad hands.

I guess he realizes this at some level and hence is very cautious in signing movies and also keeps himself away from limelight as much as possible. Its only during promoting his Dad’s films (for which he takes 2 yr breaks) that he comes and gives interviews or judges dance/reality shows and makes a complete fool out of himself.

Strangely, it always ends with big box-office numbers – which makes him even worse.

    • Baba 11 years ago

“Hrithik is a star who has zero personality. That is the reason he can be used very effectively by a good director. At the same time, he can be very awkward under bad hands.”

isnt the same thing true for abhishek? πŸ˜‰

    • Baba 11 years ago

btw if you saw the JDJ finale, the only moment hrithik sounded genuine was when he is drooling over that abcd actress lauren like a typical tharki. he even agreed to be a part of abcd 2 to “dance” with her. he has some fetish for white skin. have seen that in his just dance too.

  15. Bored 11 years ago

Probably yes. But the larger problem with Abhishek is that he is a lazy ass and very uninitiated abt everything. Probably being the son of Amitabh and Jaya and husband of Ash gives him that complacency.

  16. Bored 11 years ago

Abhishek can be used effectively only in a certain kind of role – he is much less malleable than hrithik. I say this with respect to his solo films (not multi-starrers where he is usually sidelined to be not conspicuous). And this is probably due to his one dimensional real personality that he struggles to adapt to other roles.

His only solo films that have worked at box office are BnB and Guru – both were abt conmen from small-town india. He doesnt have any other solo success in any other kind of roles. Bluffmaster was an average grosser and did only 13-15 cr in 2005-2006 when hits used to be in 40-50 cr range (here he was again a small-town conman but since he himself was getting conned it didnt work that well).

  17. saurabh 11 years ago

    @baba
he refused lbc, when….idk. he was in it i guess, or from what i saw in movie…
about ap, he had rejected the movie without knowing script because he didn’t like the idea of remaking agneepath.. but then on insistence of KJO he heard the script and liked it.. please google the whole incidence…

@suparbh which ak movie all time great u are talking about…

btw baba ji and baba both are same or differnt

    • Suprabh 11 years ago

come on Saurabh–thats so easy πŸ™‚ I’ll let Sputnik answer that πŸ˜€

  18. raj 11 years ago

    1. to begin with hrithik started witha huge disadvanatge. he came at a wrong time. there was no vacancy for no 1 position when he came. the ‘vacancy’ comes every 20 years. rajesh khanna could take that advantage as wen he came dilip kumar had almost stopped playing lead roles. but he cudnt. so wen amitabh came, the vacancy still existed ( plz note there was a gap of at least 2-3 years before amitabh took over from rajesh khanna and that gap was filled by dharmenmdra aqnd manoj kumar) but wen hrithik came it had only been 12 years since salman khan the most popular star debuted and 8 years since sharukh the percieved superstar debuted. both werat the peak of popularity and prime of age. so there was no vacancy.

    2. hrithik is the only star to whom media has not been biased – for or against. media has not tried to overproject him like amitabh, sharukh, ranbeer nor underesdtimated him like dilip kumar, salman khan, rajesh khanna, dharmendra. so he is perceived just as much as he is worth, as much as his acheivements. and with no vacancy at the top, even to be percieved as the next biggest thing, u need media overprojection (Like ranbeer) hrithik doesnt take that route.

    3. like all ‘genuinely successful’ actors he has his good and bad acting qualities so i wont comment on his laboured performances in some movies nor the good ones in others. but lower number of films definitely stops you from being a ‘rage’. you need to have 2-3-4 hist in a row to be called a superstars, that to atleast 3-4 times in your career. the possibilities of this go down automatically if u do less films. u cant compare hrithik to aamir. aamir did huge numebr of films in the 1st 15 years of his career but still cud never deliver 3 hits in a row. hrithik, despite such few films had 2 huge blockbsuters krish and dhoom 3 back to back. so he has wat it takes. it means the low number of films is harming him.

    4. he parctices, rehearses and thinks too much. it shows, apart from screen, also in hs overall personality. the reason is a lack of confidence (since childhood) and with low confidence, who can be a superstar icon?

    5. he tries to avoid bad films but in the bargain shies away from what look like weak projects, focussing only on the most ‘prestigipus’ ones. now you get maximum credit wen you give a big hit with a low budget, average looking film (mpk, deewana, baazigar, ddlj, dabangg, boduguard, rang de basanti) rather than with a huge one (k3g, ek tha tiger, chennai express etc unless they are a all time blockbuster). on the flip side if a big one flops (like kites, lakshay, ra1, veer) you get a lot of flak. he shud do a lot of average budgetted films like bang bang but then wonder if its too late for that.

  19. Manish 11 years ago

For me Hrithik’s Lakshaya is Superb .. its slow bt its awesome for me

HR is better dancer than all bollywood actors bt i believe the best dancer i have seen is Prabhu deva he is spontaneous , he enjoys dancing unlike HR who seeems to ebe trying to hard to dance well

He does too few a movie i agree salman IMO is doing perfectly fine neither too much like akki nor too few like HR /Aamir

He thinks doing lesser movie means quality n BO as well but he forgt one thing timing is important as well A salman or A Srk not only do lesser movies bt make sure they get it on festive period so that even if the movie lags in quality department they will get BO numbers because of extended weekend /festive periods …

Aamir tried coming non festive after a huge gap of 3 years bt it didnt work

  20. phoenix 11 years ago

I think Hrithik is an underachiever. Surprised to find negative opinion about Hrithik in the dance show. Hard to find people who dislike Hrithik. He has been generally accepted as a good boy.

Hrithik is probably the only actor in current times who has everything with him, which a superstar is required to have. But doesn’t perhaps the thing with the audience. Doesn’t understand and play to the audience. He seems to opted for the ‘prestige factor’ more than what audience wants. Probably doesn’t want to be a superstar in the first place.

I think it works for Aamir, because seems to know what the audience wants. Aamir has been doing entertainer films right from the beginning like Ishq, Andaz Apna Apna etc .. that when combined with good script sense has been a killer combo. With Hrithik, it has not worked and its too late to make ammends. Krish 2 has arrived a little too late.

Something wrong with his think tank. I really don’t get what he has been trying to do. Lot has to do with his friends and advisors ditto SRK. Both have the same gang of friends.

  21. saurabh 11 years ago

    @suparbh i m nt aksing sarcastic way… i m really asking. is it 3I(which i dnt think it is)… or lagaan(which i think it is)…
and i dnt think it is only aamir who gave all time great…

    • phoenix 11 years ago

LOL. Good point. I think its on the whole, looking back at the filmography, some of the most liked films or generally accepted to be good films of last two decades have had Aamir i.e Sarfarosh, Lagaan, TZP, 3I, DCH, RDB…

  22. Suprabh 11 years ago

    Saurabh,

    It indeed is Lagaan.

  23. stewie griffin 11 years ago

dancing main toh i felt farhan akhtar was much better and natural than hrithik in senorita..it was like he was trying to hard to show he is the dancer of the group..have never truly enjoyed hrithik’s dancing apart from koi mil gaya..apart from tht despite physically having everything to be a true superstar on and off screen, what he lacks is charisma which salman and srk have in abundance..acting wise he is good but ranbir is better

  24. ank_16n 11 years ago

seriously u just killed the whole point of discussion with this comment..!! πŸ˜›

serioulsly farhan was better in that znmd song for ones who think dance is nothing but putting forward ur leg n just bang it on floors……
yes i think farhan over-shadowed hr in znmd a little bit but that had nothing to do with dancing or acting it was bcoz farhan’s sister(also the director) gave her brother a better written role n dialogues..!! πŸ˜›

rest Acting i just can’t discuss seeing ur comparison in ur above comment..!! πŸ˜‰

    • stewie griffin 11 years ago

@ank-dude,wat i wrote is mine opinion..u might think dancing means to do everything complicated style..i prefer dancing to be effortless..in tht senorita song i find farhan much more effortless whereas hrithik imo was trying too hard to prove tht he is “the “dancer of the group..ofcourse i am not saying farhan can compete wid hrithik wen it comes to dancing those heavy stuff..i feel hrithik tries to do too much..eg raghupati song

    • stewie griffin 11 years ago

also discussion tab hoti hai wen you learn how to respect other ppls opinion..dancing acting sab subjective hai..itna toh pata hoga..or are you stuck on ur 16 year groundhog year πŸ˜€

  25. yakuza 11 years ago

Met one very old friend yesterday who is now Psychologist in US. Among other discussions, one very interesting thing came out was his assessment of healthy mind in contrast to movies one like to see.

As per him, The wider the range of movies one can sit through and enjoy, healthier is his mind. If one criticize or don’t have patience to sit through majority of movies, larger the chances of him being suffering from Anxiety, depression, panic attacks and many other mental diseases which one himself is not aware of. Studies show that 70% of movie buffs lost interest in movies after age 35 … and main reason of losing interest is tensions in life which makes them mentally weaker and slowly they stop enjoying things which they were enjoyed earlier. Audience which is tough to please is not because content is poor(Most of times), but because audience is not in good health. The moment you stop getting goose bumps on scenes which are suppose to give, chances are you have lost very important sense in you out of SIX senses.

    Many-many more things we discussed, which I don’t remember now … πŸ™‚

  26. saurabh 11 years ago

i didnt like 3I much, just a very lil, tat is also because of director’s choice of subject..

The best thing about AAmir is his script sense, which he used well after 2000.. and aamir never really had any image, so that worked with him(otherwise imagine srk in lagaan)…
btw i think his all time great is only Lagaan. RDB may come close. but i dnt think he ws the only one who made good movies in previous decade.

btw a question – I haven’t really understood what he saw in srk that Ashutosh offered Bhuvan’s role to srk(i guess because srk may be the only frnd he had at that time to invest so much ) and Raju hirani offered Munnabhai to srk again… even 3I(from what i heard).. and CDI to salman khan… can anybody explain.I really don’t think srk or salman suited those roles..
though many actor refused roles and srk and salman had refused many other roles, but these role, i really amazed at director’s first choice.

@yakuza… nice thing.. liked it.. always wanted to read psychology, just for interest.. can ur frnd suggest some online stuff..

Agree to the bit about Aamir not having an image. I was convinced a few years before he hardly had fans. I mean the fans who follow and adore him as a personality types. That is not applicable to current times. Aamir is in NDTV’s 25 best Indians poll. He definitely has an image now. And lot of fair weather fans have started praising him due to his previous achievements, dunno how many will stick to him during tough times ala Salman fans during his bad phase.

Wrt your point of directors choices, before Swades, I was convinced that SRK is nothing beyond a bunch of mannerisms(which I do like). I had forgotten that he had normal mode of speaking other than the OTT style he uses in films. Swades surprised me. So, you never know what a good director could do with an actor, or what a film could be with some other actor.

As the famous line for Harry Potter, “Its our choices, that show what we truly are, far more than our abilities”

Ahem, did someone here say enjoying today’s bastardized masala movies is a sign of healthy mind ?

    • yakuza 11 years ago

The point is after some point of time u stop enjoying things which u enjoyed in past (after u fully developed) …. this is actually not good sign, it signifies some deterioration of body and mind. This can be anything .. even if u lose interest In some relationship which u possess once, this is your own weakness .. otherwise question in girl/boy is same as before.

      • Baba 11 years ago

it is true that after some point of time, a person stops enjoying things he liked in the past. but it is also true that after a certain age, he doesnt like anything which he had not seen in his past. one needs to move on with time

I cant make longform comment as most members have done it here because I start with basic premise which I can’t even extend how hard I try

He is very mediocre actor but potentially bigger star thn khans ( not realised)

    About his Dance :

It does please my eyes and you may in exuberant mood shout “Wow”. That’s it. 2nd viewing of dance is completly in disconnected mode.
I belong to minority who never found his dance as wholesome thing.
I will take Govinda any time.

@yakuza – ever heard of ‘evolution’ ? Its a loss of some kind that humans dont behave like monkeys? But then i guess some still do, and such excuses will be hailed by them.

    • yakuza 11 years ago

You are not reading me properly ..

“The point is after some point of time u stop enjoying things which u enjoyed in past (after u fully developed)”

      Any more questions ?

  31. Bored 11 years ago

Development is a constant process just like maturity, progression. It never stops. U seem to resist all this under the pretext u will ‘lose’ something precious (maybe your blindfolded Bachchan love). But its your personal choice.

    Thats all.

As someone said .. “If less knowledge and brain keeps your life on edge, then no need to gain anything more”

That’s irony my friend .. “Poor fellows can gain happiness with small-small things in life .. and rich fellows go to psychiatrist just to breath normal.”

Your blog name suggest u are “Bored” .. I am worried if u are one among those rich fellows.

    • phoenix 11 years ago

LOL. The blindfolded Bachchan love is a healthy thing apparently. Since it has not changed since childhood and continues in adulthood.

      • yakuza 11 years ago

Yes, if you are able to infer this much from my saying .. and this makes u happy .. then yes .. πŸ™‚

As I said .. “If less knowledge and brain keeps your life on edge, then no need to gain anything more”

        • phoenix 11 years ago

As long as the blindfolded love doesn’t result in blindfolded hate of another, right???

And I am gonna use this logic to save every bad film πŸ™‚

  32. saurabh 11 years ago

@phonix sir, are i am not questioning srk’s acting ability, but then also he cant pull off A bhuvan character or a munnabhai, similarly salman cant do Kabir khan.. like i cant even imagine them in these roles.. and that’s y i cant understand why the so called great directors offered them these roles..

i think SRK can do swades with ease(thats y Mohan character is not his personal fav rather Kabir, and Rizwan are his personal Fav, as he said in a interview)

ps: i m really asking question nt criticizing anyone..

    • phoenix 11 years ago

Again, I did not talk about abilities or of whether SRK finds it easy to play Mohan or not. My point is about choices which can surprise the audience.

We’ve only seen most of the mainstream actors within two dimensional characters and scripts that focus too much on stlying and dialogue delivery than stuff that actually has a real world connect.

For example kambakht Ishq is a remake of a normal budget Kamal Hassan film in which he is a wise cracking stunt man ala Munnabhai style (i.e hailing from lower middle class speaking in local Chennai lingo) and Simran a cotton saree wearing doctor/activist. The Hindi version is set in London (for no reason other than stealing producers money) with Kareena being a part time model cum doctor(ample chances of skin show), Akshay Kumar stuntman casonova … Already the real world connect is lost. So, it appears like Akshay cannot pull off a lower middle class guy role. However, in a film like OMG, he appears normal.

This is the effect of formulaic films that Salman, SRK, Akshay choose to be part of. The comedy formula is different from romantic film formula Karan/Adi style. In the later, the stress is on emotional aspect alone, like the story of JTHJ, time/place/logic etc are ignored.

These actors can be capable of a lot more in films that give them a complete character. Only thing is they don’t choose to such films. Too lazy to do it. Why invest on character development, while people will lap up the lead actors own style and mannerisms???

About SRK will not be able to pull of Bhuvan, I personally don’t think of it as a handicap. I dislike the physically and voice modulation one always associates with a Period film or anything to do with that era. Men speaking with husky voices with upright shoulder, precisely the poster of Lagaan or the taut face of Aamir grimmmacing in Mangal Pandey.

Only period film I really liked was Jodha Akbhar, that too I was too skeptical to even try it. Thats the whole point of liking SRK in 90s, he didn’t speak with pauses, acted like normal guy next door but still likeable.

I do not know who started this stupid logic every actor should be able to do every character. Since SRK can’t do a Bhuvan he isn’t a complete actor type nonsense. Or since a film is not good the actor is bad, etc… We’ve been conditioned like that inorder to accept the versatality of Aamir, I suppose.

  33. Bored 11 years ago

SRK is a good actor when he chooses to be (there is ample proof of this over the years) – the prob imo is his disinterest in it.
However, he is undoubtedly the most intelligent, smart and gutsy A-lister out there (and has been for more than 20 yrs now). The confidence is just a by-product of these assets.

    • phoenix 11 years ago

SRK is probably the only actor still believing in confrontation scene with a mannequin, heart-to-heart chitchat with a doll horse and monologues with Jesus christ!!! Somehow if one is able to get absorbed into the film, these doesn’t look odd at all. But I guess there are Spoilsports for SRK who as per yakuza have mental anxieties and tensions that affect their ability to get absorbed into the film in the first place, and hence the WTF reaction.

  34. umesh 10 years ago

agreed completely…he just keeps on being diplomatic in all his interviews…the worst thing is that he shouldnt have married to that ugly gundi sussa…she has just consumed him entirely n now after 12-13 yrs, they are divorcing..its of no use now…hrithik has done some of the worst acting like mpkdh, mdk, amall n many others..i cant remeber any otehr actor doing such worst acting…the way he fakely talks abt his movies,he should give atkleast one good movie rather than faking

  35. ESP 10 years ago

I agree with all of your points except one – Hrithik is very fluent in English. His slight hesitation or lag when asked a question comes from his stammer, which he has to control by slowing down his speech a fraction. It can seem like he’s searching for a word or phrase, but actually he’s working hard not to get stuck on certain sounds. I was his classmate throughout school (Bombay Scottish) and boy was his stammer bad then!

    • Baba 10 years ago

yes that coudl be the reason for his “aahs ” and “uums”. even now you can see he has not been able to control it totally.you were his classmate? who are you? farhan or uday? πŸ˜‰

  36. Anajanpur685Miles 10 years ago

ESP – by fluent you mean he scored well in English exam? He sounds so stupid and pompous/pretentious when talking in English. IN Hindi he is better.

Disability cant be an excuse for the show off in English (I can understand if does so / falters . in speaking pure Hindi). He and Mallika are same in running down India.

  37. Anajanpur685Miles 10 years ago

Btw Most entertaining comments on this thread are of Bored and Phoenix. Esp Phoenix is literally sounding like she was going to burst into “Mai tulsi ….teeere aangan ki” πŸ˜€

  38. ESP 10 years ago

Haha, neither! I’m not in the film business at all…

  39. ESP 10 years ago

Fluency in a language is not the same as being pretentious, pompous or showing off in that language. There’s a substantial difference between having access to a language and being articulate in it. And fluency shouldn’t be confused with expressiveness. For example, Anajanpur, you use hyperbole in English quite well and communicate your point even though you’ve made numerous grammatical and syntactical mistakes in your writing. For the record, I can’t stand Hrithik’s ‘New Age’ pseudo-intellectual statements either. He tries too hard to make himself sound significant, and ends up sounding fake. I wish he would just speak simply and to the point, as he once used to do.

I am thrilled to be back with Hrithik!’

Post Jodhaa Akbar, Ashutosh Gowariker and Hrithik Roshan have teamed up for another period film, Mohenjo-Daro, which is based on one of the major cities of the Indus Valley civilisation and which lies in Pakistan. Ashutosh is currently completing his TV series (fiction) Everest which he is producing after which he will begin his epic film. A chat with the filmmaker on Mohenjo-Daro.

Why did you choose the subject of Mohenjo-daro as the backdrop of your story?
The Indus Valley civilisation has fascinated me since my school days when we read about it in history. Though I made other films Mohenjo-daro always remained at the back of my mind. After Jodhaa Akbar I started reading on the subject in detail and as I researched more I realised that there is so little one knows about this period. Though a lot of romanticisation of these times have been done still we don’t know much and yet there is constant talk about it as a forgotten world I could bring that to my film with a romantic touch. So I wrote a love story spread across those times. Though it is essentially a love story the core of the story is Mohenjo-daro β€” seen through the eyes of the lovers.

      Why Hrithik as the hero?
I want to say that I am thrilled to be back with Hrithik after Jodhaa Akbar. We had worked together four years ago. I wrote my first draft of Mohenjo-Daro three years ago and I thought of him as my hero. I am glad Hrithik and I are working together on this. He will single-handedly bring great value to my film and enhance it tremendously with his presence.

      Such a film requires research.
I have done that. I have read all the books of archaeologists who worked at those sites and met some of them. I have been to the Harappan city Dholavira, in India. It’s one of the cities of the Indus Valley civilisation that still exists today.

It’s rumoured that you have approached various actresses from Anushka Sharma, Priyanka Chopra, Kareena Kapoor, Katrina Kaif and Anushka Sharma as the female lead opposite Hrithik.
We have not approached any actress as yet but we will be shortlisting someone soon within the next 10 days.

      Making history again
Hrithik says, β€œIt’s very rare to come across a vision that challenges every aspect of the norm. That defies your ability of the physical and mental. A film that is truly about spirit. Add to that an epic love story set in ancient India. The Indus Valley Civilisation is very centric to India. But more than anything I am truly excited to once again be working with Ashutosh. I think the right words would be… β€˜We’re BACK!’”
