Music from Jab Tak Hai Jaan Trailer Inspired/Copied from The Motorcycle Diaries

The music that plays in the Jab Tak Hai Jaan Theatrical Trailer seems to be inspired/copied from Gustavo Santaolalla’s music score from The Motorcycle Diaries. Shah Rukh Khan is also riding a motorcycle so may be its a tribute/homage 😉 Thanks to Ritz for this great find.

Here is the Jab Tak Hai Jaan Trailer for comparison.

Gustavo Santaolalla won a Academy Award for Best Original Song for the next song.

Unfortunately, I fail to see much inspiration there. Even if he were inspired, the basic tune of JTHJ differs quite a bit from Motorcycle diaries, with Motorcyle diaries being much, much better.

Almost the same music no doubt well 90% inspired or copied well catch by Ritz and Sputnik great work all the best.

      @Sup

Yes, the main theme is different in the video – but that too also sounds similar to an old Bollywood song. I am trying to recollect that. Its a very popular song and the interlude was same. Most probably that also was inspired by some European Orchestra – still, I have definitely heard the tune many times in some of popular 40s/50s song in Bollywood.

But the initial portions of the music (third video from the top) is same – and as Sputnik mentioned, it could well be termed as a homage/tribute…as SRK is also riding bike 🙂

Although i dont know much about music but i dont think this a copy because i find both of them different to large extent on listening so imo it can pe passed as an inspiration.

do you guys even understand music? the music is markedly different . using the same instrument is not inspiration. you are carried away by the success of your previous post on barfi’s inspirations. desist from spreading canards it only exposes your absolute ignorance.

“using the same instrument is not inspiration”

Its not just the same instrument but the visual appeal/scenery is similar – also the initial portions are same. Hence feels like inspiration.

Too early to this but from the trailer I have a feeling that Rahman is doing a Yuvvraaj here.

Big filmmakers/showman in bollywood like Subhash Ghai could not use Rahman/Gulzar combo in better way. It seemed like he had better say in the music or maybe the grandeur / story / cliched romance just didnt inspire the duo – Rahman/Gulzar. I am having a feeling same will be the case with JTHJ – though I hope its not the case. I love Gulzar more than I hate srk and rahman. 😛

I had said it here first. Overall sounds like Producers had higher hand.

“Heer” is a hands-down winner and this is where Gulzar sparkles brightly in the album. (though I wish the song was in Hindi). He does show his magic with words occasionally in “Ishaq Shava” ( “Raat kiski ..Chand utha chal toss karein – chehra tera aur chand meri”) and a line or two in “Jiya re” but overall doesn’t seem like he was inspired or excited. Dull lyrics by his level except for “Heer”

On Rahman, I see shaded of Puriya Dhanashree (Raag) in “Saans”. This is second time I have noticed him using it after “Hai rama yeh kya hua” from Rangeela. Overall a good track but misses a good female singer – the vocals are not so strong for the kind of song it is. The song has many instruments – a Batman/Hans Zimmer meets Yashraj (the orchestra in background ) to Bagpipes – but overall there is that effort in giving it a “EPIC” feel which shows through.

The title track – Jab tak hai jaan is average and trying to put in so much again – sounds more like Yashraj. Again an effort to give that “epic” feel shows here.

Jiya re/ Ishq Dance and title lame poem are forgettable. Ishq Dance is so wannabe Taal instrumental and doesn’t work.

Ishq Shava is average. But could do wonders if choreography is good (not like DTPH been-there-n-done that type)
Overall album gives and impression that Rahman is not given the freedom like Mani or a Shankar would have given him (though Raavan and Robot/Enthiran music was not liked by Hindi public – it had distinct Tamil feel to it and were loved soundtracks down south) Here its neither here nor there.
A positive thing about this track is Rahman has not used that cringe-worthy overused “Shava” word in a cringe-worthy way (like in earlier film songs)

      PS :
On Puriya Dhanashree, one of my fav songs in this Raag is:

Here is a another distinct use of this:

Besides, The Saans song is very similar to this song of Rahman from Pukar:

        https://youtube.com/watch?v=ZFQudP-UzdM

Rahman had said this before release of JTHJ soundtrack:

Talking about the kind of music done for the film, AR Rahman said: “It’s a combination. They wanted to do my kind of songs at the same time they wanted the old charm and soul of music that Indian audience would love and which I wanted to do for a long time.”

        https://movies.ndtv.com/movie_story.aspx?Section=Movies&ID=273304&subcatg=&keyword=music&nid=273304

        —————————–

The soundtrack is not bad or worst of Rahman by any means. Just that the effort to make it sound epic shows, and as YRF had more say in it – its neither here nor there, and hence a kind of Yuvvraaj feel.

        Heard all the songs once.

“Heer” is a hands-down winner and this is where Gulzar sparkles brightly in the album. (though I wish the song was in Hindi).”

Agree. I think Heer is the best track and Harsdeep has sung it really well. Its opening is similar to this song from Jaanam Samjha Karo (got it from Navjot Gulati).

        https://youtube.com/watch?v=5BChQGuw424

“He does show his magic with words occasionally in “Ishaq Shava” ( “Raat kiski ..Chand utha chal toss karein – chehra tera aur chand meri”)”

Liked that line a lot too.

“Overall a good track but misses a good female singer – the vocals are not so strong for the kind of song it is. The song has many instruments – a Batman/Hans Zimmer meets Yashraj (the orchestra in background ) to Bagpipes – but overall there is that effort in giving it a “EPIC” feel which shows through.”

Agree completely on the song Saans.

“Ishq Dance is so wannabe Taal instrumental and doesn’t work.”

I thought Ishq Dance was ok (might like it more on 2nd/3rd listen) but it reminded me of a 90s Coca Cola/pepsi ad.

Isha Shava could have been better if there was better music to it. I think Jiya Re is ruined by excessive instrumentation.

Jab Tak Hai Jaan starts off well but then turns into a qawaalli. Another track where there is too much instrumentation. And did Gulzar really write this because some of the lyrics seem very regular and rhyming kind (narmi-garmi).

Had listened to Challa when the full song came out. Wish the song was in Hindi too.

Did not even try to listen to the poem – I am assuming its the same from the trailer.

        • Ritz 11 years ago

I disagree a bit on Ishq Shava. It is not typical run of the mill dance song. It has it’s own pace. Kind of like “Ayiayi yo..mangta hai kya” from Rangeela – which also was not a fast paced/ catchy tune to begin with but worked. With a imaginative cinematography/choreography it can do wonders.

Agree on Title song’s qawaali and not so Gulzarish lyrics. Thats why I said its Dull by his standards.

Too much instrumentation is always a Rahman trademark and too much synthetic sound too. So no surprises there.

But why use Rahman when u wanted old-world charm of Hindi film music? Anu Malik or Shiv-Hari or any other such director could have done a fabulous job at it.

The soundtrack to look forward to from Rahman is Mani’s next “Kadal” reportedly based on Fishermen killed by sri-lankans/shot in Andaman ) . I liked the poster of it.

completely agreed.even katrina is not a fit for the yash chopra world. she is hardly able to emote the scenes in that saans song. its a BO decision by yrf to cast her.and its “cool” to sign Rahman today so he is signed.

I also think that Saans is somewhat similar to Tu Muskura from Yuvvraaj. Rahman is known to recycle his own tunes or parts of them.

Agree on that. But for that BO pull of Katrina they have to pay cost in terms of BOpull of say his fav Lata or some Melodious yet hummable songs.

    • Ritz 11 years ago

On second thought, Agree on the Rahman thing. But Kat is very much from Yash Chopra world.

All of his heroines were not great shakes about acting – it was always about looking beautiful and good locations / talking cheesy dialogues and fairy-tale romance.

    Baba Ji,

“even katrina is not a fit for the yash chopra world. she is hardly able to emote the scenes in that saans song. ”

Never thought you would say this about Katrina 😀

“its a BO decision by yrf to cast her.and its “cool” to sign Rahman today so he is signed.”

Agree on Katrina siging. It has been cool to sign Rahman since the 90s but he is known to charge a lot and Yash Raj are famous or infamous for paying very less. Their signing Rahman now shows that they want Yash Chopra’s last movie to be a big hit.

    • Baba Ji 11 years ago

spuntik – you can count on me to be realistic even about a bad tony jaa film.Infact i have been vocal about how poor Ong Bak 2 was.

ritz – katrina is not good in such roles.yrf heroines are cheesy and are from old school and they need to emote a lot. katrina fits well in roles where she is not required to emote much (ie act less). znmd,NY,ett,NL etc.

      • Ritz 11 years ago

        @Baba

I dont know about that. For me Katrina is just another female . For me. .she is like a motherly figure – maybe it has to do more with the movie Raajneeti and her acting in that, but I never see her as attractive female ….she comes across as a plain jane…no distinctive features …kind of like the dull barbie doll

the music o jab thak hai jaan before listening to motorcycle diaries i thought was copied from “cecilie corbel ‘s secret orld of arietty movie……….
though the motorcycle….. is the exact match
gr8 work from founder of the copy…….

listen to ‘WITH YOU” from Secret World of Arietty

  8. Ritz 11 years ago

Do you mean the below song? I dont see the similarity. Pls give a link to “With You” song – not able to find on youtube.

    https://youtube.com/watch?v=B3Ty9Rxvhlc

The pace is different and the high pitched / electric guitar portions (in Motorcycle diaries and which come in JTHJ song promo in ending part) are clearly missing.

Listen to this song Dastaan by Tajdar Junaid. Seems heavily influenced/inspired by Gustavo Santaolalla
