Movies You Watched This Month – March 2013

kpc Synopsis: The movie starts off with the three friends Ishaan, Govind and Omi wanting to start a sports shop. They also manage to start a cricket academy in the adjacent ground that they find. Ishaan finds Ali, a kid with immense batting potential and wants to groom him to play at the Ranji level. Govind gets involved with Ishaan’s sister while tutoring her. Unable to pay back the loan Omi has to get involved in his uncle’s political party.

Some scenes are good like the whole India Vs Australia 2001 Cricket match helping heal the broken friendship and Ishaan’s sister scolding him and the scenes following Omi’s parents death.

The whole Muslim kid angle and a lot of scenes involving the kid seemed a bit forced or deliberate. There are some scenes which seemed a bit too much like a Kendriya Vidyalaya school not having a physical education class and wanting to have this sports shop/academy do a presentation so as to have Cricket training for 1000 students? There is surprisingly a huge crowd for a local match. Ishaan wanting to get the kid because there is a cricket match (where selectors are coming to watch) during riots seemed totally ridiculous.

Sushant Singh Rajput was good in some scenes but he was doing his usual over earnest acting that he used to do in the TV Serial Pavitra Rishta. Raj Kumar Yadav was good but acting wise he was not that different from his role in Talaash. Amit Sadh was good. His role is smaller but has the biggest character graph. He acted very well in scenes where he had to show his hurt/anger but he was a bit off in the crying scenes. Amrita Puri was ok but a better looking actress should have been been chosen instead.

Cinematography is good. Manjha song looked good in the movie. Abhishek Kapoor’s direction is good in parts. The movie is somewhat pro Muslim and am surprised that there have not been no controversies yet. The movie is decent/good but it could have been better.

As I said its decent/good but it was trying to be brilliant/masterpiece but it is not. Its definitely being overrated/overpraised.

I disagree with many things here.

” Ishaan wanting to get the kid because there is a cricket match (where selectors are coming to watch) during riots seemed totally ridiculous.”

Nothing wrong there. Sushant;s character may not have figured out the tautness of the situations as he was busy in his coaching. You know, my grandfather who was in Mumbai during 26/11 came to know about the attacks on 27/11.

“Kendriya Vidyalaya school not having a physical education class and wanting to have this sports shop/academy do a presentation so as to have Cricket training for 1000 students”

This is arguable, and even I was bit unacceptable about the number of students and that too in just 40,000? That’s like 40 Rupees per child 😀

“There is surprisingly a huge crowd for a local match” This is really not a point. I didn’t really feel any surprise. I have seen many local games of My uncle in solapur stadium. They used to be full. Trust me.

After Omi’s parents die both Ishaan and Govind go to meet him and they know by the speech itself that the mood is bad and that there are going to be riots. Even when he is going Govind chides him. The excuse to go to Ali is bad saying that there is a cricket match. Who will give their kid to someone else during possible riots?

No school is going to train 1000 kids in Cricket.

It was a inter club tournament. I have seen domestic cricket matches on TV and there were hardly any crowds.

Have you Read the Novel, Sputnik?

No I have not read the novel.

I did not like RR/BB but I liked Dabangg 😉

I did not find BB funny – it was just loud and I love the original old Golmaal. Among Rohit Shetty’s movies I liked Golmaal and ATB.

Sputnik, actually Ishaan never really gets to know about the riots. He just knows that something could happen. But what really mattered to him is his basic aim at that time. And yes you are right, who would give their kids during possible riots. That is why Chacha explains Ishaan “Baahar ki haalatein theek nai hai. Khatara hain baahar.” Ishaan is in his own world and he is least bothered about anything rather than the auditions.

About cricket stadium being full, I think there’s no point there. Just that you haven’t seen crowd for local matches. Doesn’t mean that there’s no crowd for any local match. And cricket is more like a festival in Gujarat.

  8. sanket porwal 11 years ago

    LOL Serenzy 😀

When I said its decent/good it means I would recommend the movie.

    Theek-Thaak Che,
    Mast-Majja Nathi!

    My Take/Movie Review of
    ‘Kai Po Che’.

Let Me Begin by Saying that I Never Liked ’3Mistakes of My Life’ at all though I’m a
Hugeeeee Chetan Bhagat Fan but 3MOML Remains his
    Weakest Novel till date.

I had Very High Hopes from
    KPC considering the Fact that
    Abhi Kapoor[whose Rock On I
had Loved a lot], UTV was
backing it, Nice Young Feel of
Friendship in the Backdrop of Cricket, Caste Politics, Gujarat
    Earthquake and Godhra Riots.
    And, KPC managed to
    Dissapoint to an Extent on
Some Counts but was Good at Places too.

    ,Amit Trivedi’s
Outstanding Music is the ‘Jaan’ of KPC and he Manages to Create a High Impact with just 3 Songs.. Kudos to Hitesh Sonik for the BG Score.

    Costume Design by Niharika
    Khan is Good.
Cinematography and Shades used were Really Average…
    Maybe the Idea was to
Recreate the Early 2000′s but it Simply wasn’t Working.

Direction by Abhishek Kapoor was Average and Not Upto the Mark.
He was Not able to Create Some Remarkable/High Impactful Scenes given the Topic he had.
Hardly any Humour was there[And his Protaginists were 20something].

    Many Scenes were Badly
    Edited I Thought and the
Godhra Riots Sequence was Badly Attempted.
    Dialogues were Ordinary.

Climax was Weak and is Changed from the Book which itself had a
Bad Ending[but atleast more Intense and Action-Packed].

    RATING: 3/5

    • Serenzy 11 years ago

Sushant Singh Rajput was the STAR of the Movie.
His Performance as the “Hot-Headed” Ishaan, held the
Movie together and he is ‘Star Material’ for sure.
Another Good Addition from TV after Rajeev Khandelwal and Ayushmann Khurana.

      Raj Kumar Yadav was also
Good in his Role as the
      Subdued and Articulate
Govind but He has done Better in LSD[His BEST Performance(Pun Intended) 😉 ] and Talaash.

Of the Trio, Amit Sadh has the Least to do I Thought and he wasn’t Much Impactive either as Omi except in his Breakdown Scene.

      Amrita Puri had Nothing Much
to do but was the Cutest
‘Vidya’ Bollywood could have come up with[Would have Loved if she was shown to be More Rebellious and Fiesty]..
      <3

      Manav Kaul as Bittoo Mama
was the Surprise Package and he Really Acted well for his Part[I have seen him in Some Serial/Movie but Cannot Recollect ATM].

      ...

I Really Liked the Graph of the Movie though as to How they Move into a New Century [Early 2000's], to Gujarat Earthquake to Godhra Riots.
      3 Middle Class 20-Something
      Men in Amdavad wanting to
      Start a Sports Business.

The Earthquake/Relief Camps Sequence was Good.
The 2 Arguments Scenes btwn the Lead Trio was Nice.

      I Particularly LOVED the Way
the “Historic” India-Australia Test Match at Eden Gardens, Kolkatta[Which India won after a Follow On] was Integrated with Elections and Reunion of Friendship.

      The Picnic Sequence was
      Another Highpoint[With
Soothing 'Yeh Zindagi' playing in the BG].

I also liked the Entire Cricket
      Track btwn Ishaan and Ali.

A Movie like KPC Rests on the
      Chemistry of it’s Leads and
      though Our Newbie Trio is
Good but they weren’t Superb as Such[Say something like
      DCH, RDB, ZNMD, Rock On!]

    • Baba Ji 11 years ago

      “Theek-Thaak Che, Mast-Majja Nathi!” 😀

  12. Serenzy 11 years ago

Finally, I wud Say that – Yes… KPC was a Good Movie with a Slow Narrative[Imagine Kya Kool Hain Hum at ZNMD Pace] but it Really Din’t Match Upto My “Gigantic Expectations”.

It was a Better Book Adaptation wrt 3Idiots though that is a Better Movie Hands Down. Nonetheless, a Good Effort!

ps – After Crap HELLO, Classic 3Idiots and a Decent KPC looking forward to the
    Cinematic Adaptation of
    ‘2States’[Starring Arjun
Kapoor and Alia Bhatt] which IMO was One Heck of a Hilarious Novel and CB’s 2nd Best Work[Behind the
Evergreen Classic – ‘Five Point Someone’].

Watched Compliance A prank caller convinces a fast food restaurant manager to strip search a employee for stealing. Its based on a true story.

If this was not based on a true story I would have called the movie totally implausible and ridiculous. But as the saying goes “Fact is stranger than Fiction”.

Movie is very disturbing and can’t believe there can be people this dumb and idiotic like the manager. I did not like the changes made from the true story. In the true story the girl is not blonde and is supposed to have been crying uncontrollably and agreed to get arrested instead of getting strip searched. But they made the girl blonde and then showed her as dating three guys (hinting at her promiscuity). The girl was hardly crying in the movie and she did not look distraught even after having been forced to perform oral sex on the manager’s fiance.

I don’t get how the victim from the true story was so dumb as to let some guy spank her and perform oral sex on a guy. Which cop would make a girl do that and how can someone think that its something standard and not a prank call?

The most infuriating thing about the real case is that the manager who strip searched the girl and put her through all the ordeal filed a lawsuit and won 400,000 dollars. The movie makes the manager make more sympathetic than she deserves. Its like the movie is from her point of view because we are shown she has a apron when she walks in but the surveillance video shows her without an apron when she walks in.

Meanwhile they tracked the guy who called and he was acquitted for lack of evidence. The fiance is serving five years in prison for sexually abusing Ogborn during the 3 1/2-hour search.

hithere had mentioned this movie in last month’s thread and also mentioned the manager’s interview. Did a Google search and I found this video which shows the surveillance video of her and the interview of the manager and the victim.

Here are links to the true story.

    • Alia Bhatt fan 11 years ago

it is too stupid to sound believable more so after watching what the girl reasoned for stripping “”my parents taught me when adults tell you to do soemhting,do it”

“But they made the girl blonde and then showed her as dating three guys (hinting at her promiscuity). ”

excellent point spuntik.so even in hw they do such shameful stereotyping of women. so they want to convey that if a women has dated 3 guys, she can possibly give a bj to a random guy under pressure. as you said truth is stranger than fiction.

      • Author
        sputnik 11 years ago

Yeah it looked ridiculous when she said that.

After watching the complete video that I posted in my previous comment its pretty clear that the manager is lying. When her lawyer intervened saying she won’t answer to a question it is clear evidence of her wrong doing. Its unbelievable how callous she is from the interview. Looked to me like she has no remorse or guilt and is instead thinking/claiming to be a victim too.

        • Alia Bhatt fan 11 years ago

yes both actually enjoyed the plight of the girl. this is no less than a rape. girls need to stand up against such incidents just like rape.

Re-watched Argo and I think the last scene is completely ridiculous. There is a scene where the Air Traffic Controller (ATC) tells the pilot that he is second in line to fly. So instead of going to the ATC and asking him to to tell the pilot to stop the plane them driving on jeeps with guns to stop the plane is completely BS. That scene is done with only one intention – to make the Iranians look like crazy lunatics nothing more. And then they finally go to the ATC after all that to beat the guy.

    ——

Re-watched The Intouchables French movie based on a true story. Had seen it in December. Excellent movie and I think it is one of the best movies ever and the Academy are a bunch of idiots for not nominating the movie for an Oscar in the Foreign Language film category.

I had missed this the last time but saw the last scene where they show the actual people on whom the movie is based. The caretaker is not a Black guy from Senegal but a Muslim Abdel Sellou from Algeria.

Here is a link to the interview of Philippe and Abdel Sellou. Here is what Abdel has to say about casting Omar Sy in the role based on him.

“What does Abdel think of the man who plays him in the film? “I’m a small ugly guy, he’s a beautiful athlete. They found the opposite of me.”

    • hithere 11 years ago

I wouldn’t have seen it but saw your recommendation and it released on netflix this week..Liked it, but traditionally, Oscar people don’t like such movies (heartwarming and casual) in this category.

      • Author
        sputnik 11 years ago

Glad you liked the movie. May be you have a point about the category thing because a similar Hollywood movie would probably be the front runner (The Artist, Forrest Gump) in the regular categories.

Only foreign category movies that I can think of heartwarming and casual were Amelie and Life is Beautiful (which dealt with a much more grave and favorite Academy subject – The Holocaust).

    • hithere 11 years ago

Saw Argo and ZDT – Both well made movies but I liked ZDT more.

Argo climax was dramatized to make it like a regular thriller. A movie recommendation I made was “Farewell”. The ending was comparatively subtle (and there was a climax).

ZDT – was slow paced but very realistically made. Some of the scenes were shot in India.

  20. Alia Bhatt fan 11 years ago

skimmed through Compliance. its a lame film with not even one scene that stands out as bold enough, edgy enough or debate-worthy. instead of wasting hrs on the film, watch this original clip from the incident. far more deeper and thought provoking

    Warning: There is nudity

Watched Leila Iranian movie. Leila learns that she is unable to conceive and her husband Reza suggests adopting a child. But she suggests he take another wife which he adamantly refuses. Due to his mother’s nagging she keeps insisting on him taking a second wife and he eventually agrees.

The movie was slow paced and arty with dark lighting and Leila talking to herself in some scenes. The print looked like that of a very old film.

The movie tried to show the turmoil of Leila and her husband and succeeded in it. But It seemed a bit too much that she does not tell her parents anything right until her husband’s wedding night. She literally forces him to remarry and then acts as if she was the victim. The movie has a somewhat happy ending (one can say convenient) which one will not get until they concentrate on the last dialogue.

Leila Hatami who was also in A Separation acted well. The guy who played her husband was also good. Performances were good by everyone.

Saw this movie long ago, reminded me of Chori chori chupke chupke..The country looked very colorful and quite similar to India, except that also had wall to wall carpeting like the western countries…If i remember correctly, this had some good scenes 😉

      • Author
        sputnik 11 years ago

hmm.. Colorful? I thought it was dark with them dressed in Black sometimes and all the dark lighting. Don’t remember about wall to wall carpeting – may be some indian styled carpets on floor in parts. Roads looked just like in US with them driving on the right side of the road and the marked exits.

You may be confusing it with some other movie if you think this had some good scenes 😉 Its a Iranian movie so the couple don’t even hug each other. Was surprised to hear the doctor say Artificial Insemination in a Iranian movie though.

    The Whistleblower

    Saw it on Suprabh’s Recco.
    Inspired by actual events,
the film tells the story of Kathryn Bolkovac, a Nebraska cop who served as a peacekeeper in post-war Bosnia and outed the U.N. for covering up a sex scandal.

It was a Very Intense, Hard-Hitting Movie based on a Real Issue.
Some Sequences[Of Human-Trafficing of Young East-European Girls] was Very Shocking and Highly Disturbing in Nature.

Kathryn[Rachel Wiesz] is able to uncover a wide-
scale sexual slavery and human-trafficking the U.S., have participated in.
When she tries to Stop it she finds many hurdles in her path involving corrupt officials and UN trying to hush-up the incident.

The Post-War Bosnian Situation is Well Depicted.
Wiesz is the STAR of the Movie… Loved her ‘Helpless? Acting & Emotions.
Watch out for the Scene where she Confronts a UN Official and another one where she conducts a raid at a bar.

The supporting cast is Good to Brilliant espc. Alexandru
Potocean, David Strathairn and Roxana Condurache.

Watched The Imposter a documentary film about the 1997 case of a French man Frédéric Bourdin, who impersonated Nicholas Barclay, a Texas boy who had disappeared at the age of 13 in 1994.

This is another Compliance kind of thing where you wonder how people can be so stupid. If it was not a documentary based on a true story and instead a film everyone would have called it totally implausible and ridiculous.

This French guy who speaks with an accent is left in a office for the night all alone so he can contact his parents in US because he claims he is a American. He instead calls different police stations and then some organization and tells them that he is a cop and they have a kid and is faxed this Nicholas picture in Black and white. So he decides to impersonate him but then finds out Nicholas was a blonde kid with blue eyes while he has brown eyes. He convinced the Spain officials and the American officials and came to US. The sister who goes to visit him thinks he is her brother and the mother and whole family are fine with him. He fooled the FBI agent and gave interviews on TV. A private investigator, Charles Parker does not believe it and he unearthed the impersonation. Frédéric Bourdin has a history of impersonations and is wanted by Interpol and he did impersonation again after he was out of jail after 6 years.

The guy seemed like a sick twisted guy with no remorse or guilt. While I liked the documentary and its good and entertaining I also had feeling that this is giving him more fame/attention. The family accepting him when he looked so different from Nicholas did casts doubts on their involvement in Nicholas disappearance. But his history of impersonations suggests that people with missing kids are very gullible and they probably want to convince themselves he is their kid no matter how different he looked/behaved.

    ————-

Also watched Runaway Bride A reporter is assigned to write a story about a woman who has left a string of fiances at the altar.

Its basically a chick flick but it was entertaining and funny up to a point and then it became a standard romantic movie. Richard Gere and Julia Roberts were good. Supporting cast was also good.

        Ha Ha

Don’t you think that FBI Special Agent Nancy was so dumb? She saw that the guy who grew up the first 13 years of his life in Texas had a French accent and had brown eyes instead of blue eyes and looked older but still believed he is a American and also bought his wild sexual abuse story? She also made the mother take the polygraph thrice till she failed.

The documentary also failed to mention this which I think could be very important.

“He has a juvenile criminal record; he broke into a convenience store, stole a pair of shoes and threatened a teacher. The court hearing to determine his sentence was set for June 14, the day after he vanished. One possibility was placement in a group home, and Nicholas was very opposed to this.”

        https://www.charleyproject.org/cases/b/barclay_nicholas.html

        • Suprabh 11 years ago

Yes indeed. I was stumped at their naivety. Also I think in cases of childeren especially the ones claiming abuse, the police (FBI or whatever) become totally submissive. Moreover this one was making the police/mayor whatever a hero that they are reuniting a lost child with their parents and hence good media recognition.

I think sometimes depiction of truth also play an important part. To make it look like “What the hell” the paris jail part could have been shot that way (in the film), while the boy may have been much more convincing in reality. Especially since he was a certified master at being an imposter all his life.

          • Author
            sputnik 11 years ago

When we watch a movie and we see a FBI agent or a CBI agent 😀 we assume that they will be very intelligent but there are stupid people everywhere 😉

Agree on media recognition part. As the documentary said the US embassy would not have liked a international story where it becomes the villain for not agreeing with the sister that he is her brother.

Also the way the documentary starts with all the build up it tries to show as if this was the first time he did it but then we find out later that “he was a certified master at being an imposter all his life.”

          • hithere 11 years ago

It looks stupid because we are analyzing it retrospectively. We may do same dumb stuff if situation arises 🙂 Most of the times we act wisely but some of the times we do behave stupidly and then it becomes a story. No one cares when you act wisely.

I honestly don’t understand the whole” torture controversy” associated with ZDT.. I always thought the torture scenes were simply lame and too mellow to break down any guy..

    • Author
      sputnik 11 years ago

I don’t think the torture scenes were lame or mellow. The movie did not show torture in detail but it did show or hinted at water boarding, sleep deprivation, stripping him naked before a female and putting him a box for days and these were things that happened at Abu Ghraib too.

The Liberals/Democrats think or want to believe that torture did not help at all in the hunt for Osama while the Republicans/Conservatives think or want to believe that torture helped or was crucial in the hunt for Osama. Since the official position under Obama has been that torture did not help and since the movie showed/hinted that torture did help in hunt for Osama hence the controversy. But I think that the controversy was partly created by some rival studio to eliminate ZDT from competition at the Oscars and that’s what eventually happened.

  30. Suprabh 11 years ago

I know most of the American population is indeed naive but I don’t think they are fools (as what they are perceived to be- initially I used to do the same) Basically they quite easily believe what you tell them and I think all the politicians/films/controversy makers cash in on that. Its stupid to believe that CIA/Military or for that matter intelligence agencies and military of any country does not torture their prisoners in the worst possible manner especially at the time of interrogation where the reputation/defense/ security of the country is on the line..

I agree to your last point– it may just have been all a gimmick to remove ZDT from the award zone.

Watched Saheb Biwi Aur Gangster Returns

Movie was good but a bit too long. All the songs were unnecessary and totally spoiled the flow of the movie. Someone said on twitter that the second half is like Race/Race 2 and I kind of agree. Did not like the ending – what Irfan does seemed totally against his character.

Performance were good by everyone. Irfan, Jimmy, Mahi were all very good and even Soha was decent. I thought Jimmy would be sidelined with him being in a wheelchair and with Irfan in this movie but he has a very good role in this one too.

    – You liked it more wrt KPC?

hmm… like I said Its good but then you get that feeling of deja vu since it is a sequel to SBAG. One can feel that they wanted to have more twists coz its a sequel.

Difficult to compare KPC and SBAGR but I would say I liked them equally 😀

Watched My Best Friend’s Wedding When a woman’s long-time friend says he’s engaged, she realizes she loves him herself… and sets out to get him, with only days before the wedding.

Did not like it. Total Chick Flick. Julia Roberts was usual. Dermot Mulroney was ok and Cameron Diaz did not have a good role. I think the movie would have been better if they had avoided Rupert Everett’s character being gay and instead shown him being in love with Julia’s character.

Tried to watch Manhunter which is a prequel to The Silence of the Lambs. An FBI specialist tracks a serial killer who appears to select his victims at random.

It is the first movie with the Hannibal Lecter character. Red Dragon is a remake of this movie. Have not seen that movie.

Did not like the movie at all. It was very boring and very slow paced. I tuned off after 30 minutes. Even though its a 1986 movie it looked like a much older movie.

Did not know what to make of William Petersen’s acting as the lead. May be he was good but I did not like the scenes where he was talking to himself as if talking to the killer. Those were very weird. Tom Noonan as the killer was ok.

Brian Cox was ok as Hannibal Lecter nothing great and no match to Anthony Hopkins portrayal in The Silence of the Lambs. Anthony Hopkins took the role to a completely different level.

Did not like Michael Mann’s direction at all. This is his first movie that I did not like at all. I have liked all his movies that I have seen so far – Heat, The Insider, The Last of the Mohicans and Ali (though I thought it ended abruptly).

    RANGO

Rango is an ordinary chameleon who accidentally
winds up in the town of Dirt, a lawless outpost in the Wild West in desperate need of a new sheriff.

    An Excellent, Message-Based
    and One of the Smartest
    Animation Movies I’ve ever
    seen with some Cool and
Eccentric Characters thrown in the Mix.

    Directed by Gore Verbinski
[Director of the POTC Series –
Haven’t watched a Single POTC Movie yet], the Film was an Amazing Joyride.

Johnny Depp as RANGO Rules the Movie with his Crazy Voiceover and he sounded like Jim Carrey in some Portions.
    Ned Beatty[Lotso – Pink Bear
    from TS3] comes up with
another great act as the Grand Old Tortoise – The Mayor.
    Bill Nighy as the ‘Rattlesnake
    Jake’ was Quite a Show-
    Stealer.
All the Desert Animals shown in the Supporting Cast were Highly Entertaining!

The Message about “Shortage of Water” and ‘How Urbanisation and Devlopment’ are Drying up the Water Resources was Excellently Potrayed in a Funny Manner and Connected well without
    getting too Preachy and
    Boring.

    • Serenzy 11 years ago

      Haven’t Seen any “Western
Movies” till now but I know
what they are like and Rango was Totally Fun!
That Sequence as an ode to Clint Eastwood referred to as the ‘Spirit of the West’ and his 5 Oscars as the “golden guardians” was an Excellent Tribute.

      – RANGO was also the 1st
Nicklodean-backed Movie [Non-Pixar /Dreamworks/ Disney] to Win an OSCAR for
      Best Animation Movie at the
      Oscar-2012.

      Two Excellently Directed
      Sequences :-
      – The Scene where RANGO
Enters the Saloon/Bar with all the ‘Tough Looking’ Town Bullies present there and he asks for a ‘Glass of Water’ xD
      – A Hawk Chasing Rango and a Fat Mouse picks up the Mouse and Flies away… The Mouse yells at Rango –
“Son of a…” which is cut-in by the Hawk/ Eagle wala squeal – “Biiiiiiiii….”

      Genius Work! 😀

Watched Nine Queen on RKS recommendation. Film is just flawless with brilliant act and climax in the end. After few hours from watching i suddenly felt something wrong.

    Rks this is for you

    ****Spoiler Alert******

After losing duplicate stamps, when they go for original one, why wud they bother to pay 250Grand to that old lady for the purchase when the return is just 450 grand? coz to arrange 250 grand, the other partner arranges 200grand. and when 450 is divided after paying off small commissions, the other partner gets only 200 grand. I did not understand this part… was that a trick to fool audience or partner? Some confusion you may solve

even with this doubt, i would still give it 5/5

Movie is Nine Queens? Had downloaded this a few days back. Will watch it tonight.

    • hithere 11 years ago

I have seen it 2-3 times but don’t remember the scenes in details.

Some of the scenes were lifted in Bluffmaster.

Sputnik – Your experience has been contaminated as you have seen many such movies. I saw it long time back without much information and was surprised pleasantly.
ps1 – You may try “The sting”..little dated but similar premise.

Saw half of it yesterday but there were too many distractions so had to stop. Will complete it today.

You are right about the contaminated part. I have seen Matchstick Men which is also somewhat similar and which released after this.

Initially thought Bluffmaster was inspired from Game but someone had said that it is inspired more from Nine Queens and I agree. Yeah some scenes were lifted in Bluffmaster like the lift scene. Also the doctor part was from Matchstick Men.

Watched Nine Queens Two con artists try to swindle a stamp collector by selling him a sheet of counterfeit rare stamps (the “nine queens”).

It was good though a little slow spaced. I think the whole con plot was too complex for everything to fall in place. Performances by everyone were good specially the two male leads.

      Spoiler Alert
There were some scenes where you can could see what Juan was doing and Marcos should have doubted him. Its a bit too much that he does not find out even at the end that he was conned. The sister agreeing to sleep with that guy if he tells the truth should have raised suspicion and specially when she comes back with the certified check.

I think it would have been better if the certified check had just turned out to be fake instead of the whole bank going bankrupt thing.

Was reading some threads on IMDB and one of them seems a big loophole. Fede the younger brother does not seem to be on the con and they make Marcos tell the truth to him. He sees Juan who is his sister’s fiance for a year and does not say anything? If he said “Hi Juan” the whole con would have fallen through. I think that is such a big risk anyone would take for such a big con.

      @FS,

As to your question they pay the lady 250 and after getting their 250 back they would have 200 left out of the 450. He has to pay 10% to Sandler and even if he pays 5% to the stamp certifier and 30% to Juan he would still make 110 grand.

      • FS 11 years ago

Sputnik – 55% of 450 is 247500 & he wud make only 47.5 grand after arranging 200 grand. Do u think he wud risk all his assets for just 47500? The other guy invests just 50grand but return wud be 85 grand., i think here director tried to fool the audience… Iam little disappointed

        • Author
          sputnik 11 years ago

Marcos keeps saying minus expenses. He is not giving to give share from 450,000. Shares are always given from profits unless everyone’s investment is same. So after each getting back from their 200,000 and 50000 the profits are 200000. Shares will be given from these 200000. He may not give Sandler 10% any more coz its not his fake stamps and the stamp certifier any share either since its the real stamps now.

Even If he does give everyone their share he will get ether 110000 (55%) if the stamps certifier guy share is 5% or 90000 (45%) if the stamps certifier guy share was 15% – don’t remember his exact share.

The director tried to cheat/confuse audience by having Juan’s father scene. I think it was not needed. By having that scene he showed that what he said about his father and him being a crook cook be true too.

And anyways if Marcos was the guy who keeps cheating others and who is so smart he should have easily seen that this was a set up since his sister calls him to her hotel where Sandler meets him and the guy is staying at the hotel and his sister agrees to sleep with the guy if he just admits the truth and then comes with a certified check.

Watched Contraband To protect his brother-in-law from a drug lord, a former smuggler heads to Panama to score millions of dollars in counterfeit bills.

Was initially a bit confusing and was having a hard time understanding what’s going on. But it got better and was decent/good. Kate’s character getting buried part was incredulous. It has a Guy Ritchie style ending.

I think the initial part of Blue – the part about Sanjay Dutt agreeing to Akshay’s plan because of his brother Zayed owning money to a gangster is inspired from this movie.

Mark Wahlberg was good in a role that he usually plays. Kate Beckinsale was ok. Ben Foster was decent. Giovanni Ribisi as a gangster was a bit of a stretch.

Just found out that the movie is a remake of Reykjavík-Rotterdam, a Icelandic film starring Baltasar Kormákur who directed the remake.

hmm… the third one is pretty standard for con movies where there is safe cracking scene.

When I saw The Italian Job and I thought it was a ready made recipe for a Bollywood movie and Abbas Mustan are the right guys for the remake. I think they went wrong with the casting itself by having Abhishek and others. It needed bigger stars may be Aamir/SRK/Akshay in one of the lead roles.

Watched Young Adult Soon after her divorce, a fiction writer returns to her home in small-town Minnesota, looking to rekindle a romance with her ex-boyfriend, who is now happily married and has a newborn daughter.

It is like a serious, darker version of My Best Friend’s Wedding. It was a bit slow paced. Liked one scene specially where she lashes out at her ex-boyfriend’s wife.

Charlize Theron was very good as the depressed writer. Patrick Wilson, Elizabeth Reaser and Patton Oswalt were good.

Watched Jolly LLB Liked it and it was good. While there was a bit of comedy and satire its actually a serious movie about a serious issue. May be the makers promoted it wrongly as a comedy.

Its populist and has a feel good ending. Don’t know if the court scenes are supposed to be taken as the sorry state of affairs or as a satire.

Arshad Warsi was very good as the lawyer who files the case just for attention and who even takes a bribe but then decides to do the right thing. Amrita Rao’s role was there just to make him do the right thing but they should have fleshed out the character more. Saurabh Shukla was excellent as the Judge.

Dialogues were very good. Songs were totally unnecessary and spoiled the flow of the movie. I had not liked Phas Gaye Re Obama much and this is definitely better than that.

    Saheb, Biwi Aur Gangster Returns

As a Sequel to a Much Loved and Appreciated SBAG[though not strictly at the BO], the Sequel was a Collosal Dissapointment and a Huge Failure in terms of giving us a Thrilling Cinema with a Deadly Cocktail of Politics, Royalty, Cheating Partners and more.

Many Sequences throughout the Movie look unwanted which harms the movie and slackens it’s pace.
Instead of sticking to their priorities at hand, many of the major characters are indulging in a Stupid(and unwanted) Game of Upmanship and Defeating the other.
In simpler words – they beat around the bush instead of coming directly to the point.

The Sizzle and the Razor Sharp Moments of the 1st Part is Missing.
The Writing is Plain Bad with Many Scenes Not even Connecting well with each other(the ‘Flow’ is Missing) and even the Direction by Tigmanshu Dhulia is Poor.
Songs are totally Unwanted and Misplaced.

Soha Ali Khan as the ‘Pawn’ does a Fair Job.
Mahie Gill is Fine but Not as Steamy OR Dominating as the 1st Part.

Surprisingly, it’s Irrfan who does NOT Impress at all and has Niether been given a Strong Character to enact niether some Strong Scenes.
This is a Routine Role and he just ‘Sleepwalks’ through it.

But, it’s Jimmy Sheirgill and Parvesh Rana of the Cast who Excel in their Parts and are the Best Performers.

Lack of Strong Supporting Cast hurts a lot… The ‘Unwanted’ Scheming Politics played by the Characters seem out of place.

Movie is Long at 2.30hrs, looks Forced and maybe made to ‘Cash in’ on the Small Movie Mania and Irrfan’s Recent Acclaim and Stuff.
No wonder it crashed after a Decent Week One.

Being a Huge Fan of the 1st Part and the People involved in it, SBAGR is 2013’s Huge Dissapointment.

    RATING: 2/5

    • Serenzy 11 years ago

Genuinely liked Pravesh Rana in the Movie.

That ‘Minister caught watching PORNO’ was SuperLOL Moment.
Also liked the Small Town Settings but then from Lagaan to Ishaqzaade, we have all seen it a lot of times by now..

All said and done, I am hopeful that Dhulia is a Strong Bundle of Talent and inspite of mistakes like Shagird and SBAGR he will comeback like a breath of fresh air.
Looking forward to his next’s – Bullet Raja(Saif-Sonakshi) and Milan Talkies(Imran Khan as a Single Screen Owner in the 90’s Lucknow.. Interesting!)

Glad that SBAGR Flopped.. Yeh Sequel ka Craze ab tut jaana chahiye.

Don’t think so. Hated him in Krazzy 4, Shortkut – The Con Is On and did not like him in Sunday either.

Loved his performance in his debut movie Tere Mere Sapne. Loved his performance as Circuit in the Munna Bhai series but its success has also typecasted him. I like him in comedies like Dhamaal and just his laugh makes me laugh in the Golmaal series. Liked him in Ishqiya too though role was “Circuitish”. He was very good as a cop in a serious movie like Sahar too.

Finally watched Miracle Miracle tells the true story of Herb Brooks, the player-turned-coach who led the 1980 U.S. Olympic hockey team to victory over the seemingly invincible Russian squad.

Excellent movie. The wife track in the first half seemed a bit unnecessary. Some of the scenes were very good like the drill scene after they tie the game with the Norwegian team and the scene where they give Christmas gifts to the coach and assistant coach and the scene where the assistant coach shows up to the meeting after Herb is accused of wanting to stay in the limelight by not allowing players to give interviews. The climax has the US-Soviet Union match for 25 minutes and the scene is excellent. The movie does not even show the final game where they beat Finland.

CDI has copied a few scenes from the movie like the scene where Herb interviews with the United States Olympic Committee, the excessive drills scene, the who do you play for scene and the speech scene (though its a sports movie cliche) and even the coach holding his knees and almost crying after the win.

I must say that I liked the country and not states scene in CDI more as it was at one stretch unlike Miracle and I did not get how the player suddenly knew that the coach wanted to hear that he was playing for USA during that excessive drill scene.

Kurt Russell was excellent as the coach. Patricia Clarkson was ok as the wife. Noah Emmerich was good as the Assistant Coach. Rest of the cast was also decent/good.

Would definitely recommend the movie to everyone.

    Jolly LLB

Highly Entertaining and Engaging Movie…. Liked it.
1st Half was Good but the 2nd Half takes the Cake away and is Mind-Blowing… Espc. the Invesgative Drama and the Courtroom Sequences added were Quite Brilliant in the 2nd Half.

Yes, the movie is NOT Perfect Potrayal of Indian Judiciary, has a Jolly-good feel to it and has an Happy(but Impractical) Ending to it but fellas.. When we can accept a Munnabhai MBBS and 3Idiots then why be Unnecessarily Harsh on Jolly LLB.

What bogs down the Movie is a Weak 1st Half, the “Usual” Bollywood Trappings and some really unwanted sequences here and there that act as Irritating “Fillers”.

But, JLLB has it’s Heart set at the right place and will leave you engaged and entertained at the end of it’s run time… Don’t be Fooled by the Trailers of it being a Comedy though :/

Saurabh Shukla is EXCELLENT in his Potrayal of the Judge… He gets Every Note and Expression of his character perfectly and leaves behind a Great Impact.
Boman Irani provides ample support… Though he has done role similar to this Meany and Bastard Lawyer in the Past still he is good.

But it’s Arshad Warsi who manage to hold his own and comes up with one of his CAREER-BEST Performances as the Lovable and Heartfelt Jagdish Tyagi urf Jolly!
Many of his Scenes are worth the price of the ticket and he was really amazing in his performance.

Subhash Kapoor is a Wonderful Talent and I am glad he is doing Munnabhai3.
His writing is very strong and he chooses his actors very well…. With this and ‘Phas Gaye Re Obama’, I will definately add this guy to one of my ‘Directors to watch out for’ list.
    Kudos to you, Subhash. 😀

Jolly LLB is Worth a watch with your Family… Don’t go expecting a Munnabhai or Khosla ka Ghosla but at a Time when Sajid Khan is Claiming 100 crores for HIMMATWALA, a product like Jolly LLB definately deserves your money to help it become a Success at the Box-Office.

    RATING: 3.5/5

I definately liked JLLB more than SBAGR and KPC this year.
I really hope this does 35-40cr Nett and becomes a BIG Success!

And I Believe Shah Rukh Khan is the Biggest Chutiya in the World to NOT Accept this role and is doing “HAPPY NEW YEAR” instead… WTF Man!

Did you know that the director – Subhash Kapoor lost his Left Hand in an accident when he was 10years old or something?

Glad you liked Jolly LLB. Agree with most of your write up.

I did not know that Subhash Kapoor lost his Left Hand in an accident. Just googled and saw his pictures. Its sad.

Tomorrow is Emraan Hashmi’s birthday. Which song of his do you want me to post as SOTD?

    • hithere 11 years ago

I am not sure why JLLB got bad reviews..Screenplay could have been tighter but it was OK.

Mere dad ki Maruti is good.

Saw Rust and Bone – It is an unusual Love story..Marion acted good..little slow but good.

      *Spoilers*
ps – Jolly picked the case on his own.. Boman’s character manipulating him was not by design as suggested later.

Watched Boys and Girls A friendship is put to the ultimate test when two best friends wind up in bed together

Its a teen romantic comedy. Its the usual opposites attract but with a gender reversal in that the girl does not believe in love whereas the guy believes in love. It was funny and enjoyable.

Freddie Prinze, Jr. acted well but he was too good looking for the role. Claire Forlani was good and she acted well. Jason Biggs of American Pie fame has a smaller role but he was good and had some funny scenes.

Watched The Peacemaker A US Army colonel and a civilian woman supervising him must track down stolen Russian nuclear weapons before they’re used by terrorists.

Its a masala movie – ok as time pass. There was one good chase scene in Italy but then it goes on for a little too long. There are the usual cliched scenes of George and Nicole taking a leap when there is an explosion. The climax was tension filled but the final bomb defusing scene was silly.

George Clooney was in a somewhat different role than usual (trying to be James Bond) but even here he was trying to use his charm and it looked kind of silly in the final scene. Nicole Kidman was ok. Rest of the cast was decent.

Watched Taken 2 In Istanbul, retired CIA operative Bryan Mills and his wife are taken hostage by the father of a kidnapper Mills killed while rescuing his daughter.

Did not like it at all. The first one was fun but the sequel has been made just because the first one was a hit. It has such a contrived plot and so many corny and ridiculous scenes. Some of the action scenes were good.

Liam Neeson was good but Famke Janssen who plays the wife has a bigger role this time and was annoying. Maggie Grace who played the daughter was bad too and the grenade throwing scenes were ridiculous.

Watched – It’s a Wonderful life – Had written a short take on it

Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy – Had seen first 10 mins and felt bored the first time. But after Nirjhar insisted i watched it and liked it… It is slow in the beginning but later keeps you on the edge. Performances are brilliant and have kept it much more realistic compared to other movies.

The Unforgiven 1960 – After watching this movie it feels like Bollywood is still in 1960’s of hollywood. It is also slow paced but it has very interesting romantic affair of 60’s and liked everything about it except the final climax action. Looked implausible.

Four Weddings and a Funeral – Again one of the slow movies, romance takes place between two individuals in all three weddings and finally they realize how much they love each other in the final wedding after the funeral of one of his aquaintence… Didn’t like very much but it was a time pass movie

About a Boy – Again timepass movie. Once in a while its good to watch such movies but boring concept and same old story.

Shawshank Redemption – Watched it after a long time and loved more than the previous time.

The Rise of Guardians – Loved the Animation but same type of story seen more than millionth time. But still you will love the animation.

Spirited Away – Wonderful movie, new concept and film is worked out in minute details. Loved everything about the movie… Classic I must say

Corpse Bride – Excellent animation and brilliant concept. Liked it very much.

Special 26 – loved it except the boring romantic angle until Akshay planned to have biggest robbery. The moment manoj bajpaye meets anupam kher, i knew something fishy and doubted that jimmy is with akshay. When jimmy walks off wearing the sunglasses i was praying that he shouldn’t turn out on wrong side coz whole plot looks stupid and then it did… In actual robery i believe the thieves rob the shop and elope without being caught unlike shown in the film and it would have been good if it was shown that way. Till the biggest robbery it was very interesting and entertaining but the climax was biggest let down.

Wrath of the Titans – Stupid concept but just watched it for entertainment. first part was much better than the second.

Had watched Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy last year. My comment on the movie.

      “Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy
Its good but quite slow paced. I was able to guess who the main guy will be pretty early on so it wasn’t that great. Gary Oldman was good and some are saying he deserves the Oscar for this but I don’t agree. There is nothing so great in his performance so as to deserve the award.
      Rating: 3/5”

Movies You Watched This Week 2

I thought you were talking about Clint Eastwood’s Unforgiven (92). Have you seen that? Its also a western but different than the regular westerns. I liked that movie a lot when I saw it ten years ago. It won four Academy Awards including Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor in a Supporting Role (Hackman), and Best Film Editing.

Four Weddings and a Funeral was ok time pass movie.

Have seen the original Clash of the Titans (81) on TV as a kid on TCM channel. The vfx may have been good for their time but looked very bad. I think I had read that story in school.

Watched A League of Their Own Its a fictionalized account of the real-life All-American Girls Professional Baseball League. Two sisters join the first female professional baseball league and struggle to help it succeed amidst their own growing rivalry.

Movie was good. Funny and very entertaining. It should have ended after the final match though but it kind of dragged with the old players meeting and being inducted into the Hall of fame.

Geena Davis was good and so was Lori Petty as her younger sister with the sibling rivalry. Tom Hanks was excellent – his role was different from his usual roles in that this was not a serious role and he was hilarious. Madonna has a smaller part which was surprising since she already was a top singer in 1992. Rosie O’Donnell and the rest of the cast were all good.

Had liked Awakenings starring Robert DeNiro and Robin Williams directed by the same director Penny Marshall. That was a serious and almost depressing movie and this was a comedy. Liked both.

Watched A Few Good Men for probably the fourth or fifth time. A courtroom drama, the film revolves around the court martial of two U.S. Marines charged with the murder of a fellow Marine and the tribulations of their lawyer as he prepares a case to defend his clients.

Excellent movie. One of the best courtroom dramas ever and one of all my all time favorites.

Tom Cruise was very good. Demi Moore, Kevin Pollak, Kevin Bacon, Wolfgang Bodison and Kiefer Sutherland were all good. Jack Nicholson was excellent and the climax scene is one of my all time favorite scenes.

If any of you has not seen it you should definitely check it out.

Rewatched Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid which I had watched recently.

Have not seen Shaurya. Just tried watching some scenes now and that Rahul Bose was a joke with stupid dialogues of “lets play a memory game”. Can’t believe they cast that pathetic actor Rahul Bose in Tom Cruise’s role.

Saw the “You can’t handle the truth” scene from Shaurya. Don’t now what’s up with the pure Hindi dialogues. Kay Kay was acting well in some parts but looks like they added some unnecessary Hindu Muslim angle and dragged the scene so much.

Have you seen A Few Good Men?

Co-incidently Shaurya was on UTV Movies Intl today. They actually bastardized “a few good men”… Didn’t listen to srk’s speech…

I am sort of a huge tom cruise fan!

For all those who dont accept tom cruise of today or just disregard him like that should watch this movie! and boy o boy Jack Nicholson is top grade. That climax still gives me goosebumps!

I sincerely feel bad, unlike united states, we dont have movies like this in india, and also series on legal subjects.

Watched Steel Magnolias Revolving around Truvy’s Beauty Parlor in a small parish in modern-day Louisiana, Steel Magnolias is the story of a close-knit circle of friends whose lives come together there.

Its a movie for women with pretty much all women cast and It just dragged like anything. There is a basic story of Julia Roberts and her mother and a tragedy but it could have been just about these main characters. Don’t know why the whole town had to be in it with so many characters and why was the beauty parlor so important to the story.

Performances by everyone – Sally Field, Dolly Parton, Shirley MacLaine, Daryl Hannah, Olympia Dukakis and Julia Roberts (who was nominated for Oscar for Best Supporting Actress) were very good.

Watched Collateral A cab driver finds himself the hostage of an engaging contract killer as he makes his rounds from hit to hit during one night in LA. He must find a way to save both himself and one last victim.

The movie was good till like the last 20 min or so and then it turned into a regular masala movie.

    Spoiler Alert
The ending was ridiculous and so stupid. Jamie Fox suddenly decides to become a hero. Tom Cruise starts doing stupid things like cutting the power off when all he has to do is go up 2 floors which gives Jamie Fox all the time. Jada Pinkett Smith was acting so stupid and not reacting quickly when she is being told that someone is coming over there to kill her. Did not understand how Tom Cruise gets into the train from the back of it.

Tom Cruise was very good as the contract killer. Jamie Fox was ok. Jada Pinkett Smith was bad. Mark Ruffalo was good and he could have had a important role to play in the climax. Background music was good at places. Was surprised to see Michael Mann as the director as I had no idea that he was the director.

    WTF News of the day

Iranian actress Leila Hatami faces public flogging
Iranian court is asked to order the public flogging of award-winning actress Leila Hatami for greeting Cannes festival president with a kiss

A red carpet peck on the cheek by Leila Hatami, the Iranian actress at the Cannes Film Festival has been reported to the country’s courts by activists who are seeking a public flogging as punishment for violating Islamic laws.

Hizbullah Students, a group of university students with links to Iran’s Revolutionary Guard yesterday filed a complaint with Iran’s judiciary for the prosecution of the film star who starred in the Oscar-winning, A Separation.

Miss Hatami was condemned by Islamic Republic officials for kissing Gilles Jacob, the President of Cannes Festival, while attending the event as a member of the jury.

Mr Jacob tried to play down the incident, describing it as “a usual custom in the West” after it was condemned as an insult to Iranian womanhood.

“I kissed Mrs Hatami on the cheek,” Mr Jacob said. “At that moment, for me she represented all Iranian cinema, then she became herself again.”

According to the Guards-run Tasnim news website, the Hizbullah Students organisation called for Hatami to be flogged for “kissing a strange man”. The maximum sentence the offence can incur is 50 lashes.

Iran’s Islamic rules stipulate that a man and a woman who are unrelated cannot embrace in public. Moreover a woman should not have her hair on display. The actress had a scarf around her neck but had not covered the crown of her head.

“We, the undersigned, who are a group of student Muslim brothers and sisters, ask the cultural and media branch of the judiciary to prosecute Leyla Hatami for her sinful act of kissing a strange man in public, which according to article 638 of Islamic Criminal Justice carries a prison sentence,” the petition read.

“Furthermore, the action of this film star has hurt the religious sentiments of the proud and martyrs breeding nation of Iran and as such we also demand the punishment of flogging for her as stipulated in the law.”

Mr Jacob has insisted there are no grounds for such a backlash.

“This controversy based on a normal Western custom is baseless,” he said.

Iranian conservative media have claimed the greeting “was an affront to the chastity of women in Iran”.

Hossein Nushabadi, Iran’s deputy minister of culture, declared Hatami’s appearance in Cannes “in violation of religious beliefs”.

“Iranian woman is the symbol of chastity and innocence,” he said.

The daughter of the late internationally acclaimed film director Ali Hatami, Leyla Hatami gained worldwide recognition for her role in Asghar Farhadi’s A Separation, which won the 2012 Academy Award for best foreign language film.

Hatami is one of five women members on the Palme d’Or prize jury, which includes actress Carole Bouquet and directors Sofia Coppola and jury president Jane Campion.

While she is visiting the south of France for the annual Cannes festival in southern France, the actress lives in Iran.

Iranian Actress Leila Hatami Apologizes for Cannes Kiss After Flogging Threat

Following threats of flogging, Iranian Actress Leila Hatami has issued an apology for publicly kissing Cannes Film Festival president Gilles Jacob on the cheek.

“I am so sorry for hurting the feelings of some people,” she wrote in a letter to the Iran Cinema Organization. “My pre-emptive action of hand shaking was fruitless.”

Hatami, who starred in the Oscar-winning foreign language pic “A Separation,” said she respects Islamic rules of behavior, which prohibit unrelated men and women from touching in public. She said Jacob “had forgotten the aforementioned rules, which comes with old age.”

“In my eyes, he is certainly like an old grandfather who was also my host,” she wrote of the 83-year-old.

Jacob gave Hatami a peck on the cheek at the opening night of Cannes during the world premiere of “Grace of Monaco” on May 14. She was a Cannes jury member this year.

Hizbullah Students, a group of women linked to Iran’s Revolutionary Guard, have since filed a complaint, calling for her to be imprisoned and lashed over the incident.

“Those who attend intentional events should take heed of the credibility and chastity of Iranians so that a bad image of Iranian women will not be demonstrated to the world,” Deputy Minister of Islamic Culture Hossein Noushabadi said.

However, Hatami said the situation was out of her hands.

“Although I am embarrassed to give these explanations, I had no choice but to go into details for those who could not understand the inevitable situation that I was stuck in.”
