TheKiteRunnerSynopsis
Finding Neverland director Marc Forster adapts author Khaled Hosseini’s critically acclaimed novel about two childhood best friends forever torn apart as their country is ravaged by endless war and bitter strife. As children, Amir (Khalid Abdalla) and Hassan were inseparable; their long days under azure Kabul skies often spent getting into innocent mischief or preparing for the highly anticipated kite-fighting tournament. When the day of the tournament arrives, however, a glorious victory is quickly offset by a timorous act of betrayal that ultimately serves as the catalyst for catastrophe. Not long after that fateful day, Amir moves away to America, leaving his old friend behind just as the ominous specter of war turns tragically tangible. Two decades later, Amir returns to Afghanistan to find his beloved homeland has now fallen under the iron-fisted rule of the Taliban. Still, all hope for redemption hasn’t been lost just yet, because now that Amir stands face to face with the irrepressible secrets that he struggled so vigilantly to bury, he will receive one last chance to make peace with the past, and lay the groundwork for a brighter future.

The movie is filled with some excellent scenes. The scene where Amir asks his friend Hassan to hit him back or the scene where he accuses him of stealing are very good. The orphanage owner’s outburst scene is excellent. The child rape scene is quite disturbing and Amir’s cowardly behavior is shocking. There is a disturbing scene where the Taliban stone a woman accused of adultery. The best scene of the movie is the scene where Baba stands up to the Russian soldier in defense of a unknown woman.

The story is about Amir’s childhood betrayal of his friend and his eventual redemption. The movie is very good but the same person who raped Hassan also ending up as the rapist of his son seemed a bit contrived. Also the twist with respect to Baba and Hassan is a bit contrived too though it does provide a stronger motive for Amir’s actions from then on. The movie covers a wide range of issues like the Russian invasion, Taliban rule, child rape and pedophilia.

The movie is beautifully shot. The 1978 Afghanistan as well as the 2000 Afghanistan are recreated very well. The background score is excellent and it was nominated for Best Original Score at the Golden Globes and the Oscars. The movie was nominated for Best Foreign Language Film at the Golden Globe Awards in 2007.

Khalid Abdalla is very good as Amir and Atossa Leoni is good as Soraya. Homayoun Ershadi is excellent as Baba. Shaun Toub is very good as Rahim Khan. Zekeria Ebrahimi is good as the Young Amir. Ahmad Khan Mahmoodzada is excellent as Young Hassan. Elham Ehsas is good as Young Assef.

The movie is very leisurely paced. So not everyone will like it. And the movie is not perfect in that a part of it feels a bit contrived. But its still worth a watch for portraying the change Afghanistan went through and for covering issues like pedophilia and child rape.

Try watching the movie. You might like it. From IMDB discussions a lot of people are not happy with the changes made in the movie with respect to the book but then its usually the same for every movie that is adapted out of a book.

Rewatched The Pursuit of Happyness after a long time. Liked it a lot. Some scenes are very touching and make you almost choke up. Will Smith was excellent and it is one of his career best performances. His real life son Jaden Smith looked very cute and was excellent as his son.

Finished final season of Spartacus: War of the Damned. Liked it overall. It was entertaining. The invented character of Tiberius, the son of Crassus track and the whole Caesar track felt ridiculous as there is no historical evidence of Caesar having participated in the war against Spartacus.

Fan : found it unrealistic and underwhelming. Keeping the unrealistic part aside, the inconsistency in Gaurav’s looks and similarity to Aryan was very distracting and made the whole plot unconvincing. Srk did well as Aryan but I did not find his work as Gaurav worthy of the accolades he is getting. It was okay, at best.

Neerja : Well-made, taut movie. Good acting by all actors. Sonam was the least impressive but she did better than she usually does. The direction is great, especially the idea of showing Neerja and the hijackers actions on a timeline. The acts of Neerja are inspiring and from what I read, what is shown is very close to what happened.

Started watching the TV series The Blacklist. Finished watching the first two episodes. Liking it so far. The plot resembles the plot of The Silence of the Lambs in that the lead actress is a new FBI agent and Reddington is a criminal who will only talk to her and gives her clues and helps nab or get rid of other criminals.

Stopped watching The Blacklist. Got bored after a few episodes. It became repetitive and has a anything goes plot.

James Spader was good but then he always plays these weird/eccentric characters. Megan Boone is horrible. She has this make up and it feels like she is in some romantic movie not a crime show.

Rewatched Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind after a long time. Remember liking it the first time I watched it years ago (may be 2005) because of its novel concept and screenplay. The movie won an Oscar for Best Original Screenplay.

Did not like it this time. It felt so bleak and depressing and it was boring.

Jim Carrey was good. Kate Winslet was irritating. Kirsten Dunst was good and looked cute. Mark Ruffalo looked quite young and was good. Elijah Wood was ok in a creepy role. Tom Wilkinson was good.

    E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial
After a gentle alien becomes stranded on Earth, the being is discovered and befriended by a young boy named Elliott (Henry Thomas). Bringing the extraterrestrial into his suburban California house, Elliott introduces E.T., as the alien is dubbed, to his brother and his little sister, Gertie (Drew Barrymore), and the children decide to keep its existence a secret. Soon, however, E.T. falls ill, resulting in government intervention and a dire situation for both Elliott and the alien.

Watched the movie for the very first time. As a children’s movie it is fine but from an adult point of view it is a silly, stupid movie. It has all kinds of stupidities like the mother not seeing that the E.T when its walking all around her or the frog dissection scene in school or the kid sleeping outside to see the alien. The climax is just damn silly.

I had read some articles in the past about how E.T. should have won the Oscar instead of Gandhi for the Best Picture. Even without having watched E.T. I thought those articles were ridiculous. But now after having watched the movie I can say that people who think that E.T. is better than Gandhi were either kids when they watched E.T or they need to have their head examined.

    Short Term 12
A supervisor (Brie Larson) at a group home for at-risk teens connects with a new resident (Kaitlyn Dever) while facing a personal crisis of her own.

Liked it a lot. The movie is leisurely paced but its very good. Some scenes are excellent like the scene were Jayden tells her short story or the scene where Marcus sings a rap song.

Brie Larson was excellent as Grace. In someways her role is similar to her role in Room for which she won an Oscar for Best Actress. John Gallagher, Jr. was good as Mason. Kaitlyn Dever was excellent as Jaden. Rami Malek was good as Nate. Keith Stanfield was excellent as Marcus. The rest of the kids were good too.

    Casualties of War
Pvt. Max Eriksson (Michael J. Fox) is stationed in Vietnam under Sgt. Tony Meserve (Sean Penn). Though Meserve saves Eriksson’s life during battle, the two men clash when the callous senior officer orders the abduction of Than Thi Oanh (Thuy Thu Le), a young Vietnamese woman, to be used as a sex slave. When Eriksson refuses to take part in the abuse of Oanh, tensions between him, Meserve and the rest of the unit heat up and finally explode during a firefight with Viet Cong troops.

Good movie. Had watched it many years back. Its based on a true story.

Michael J. Fox was very good as Eriksson. Sean Penn overacted a lot. Thuy Thu Le was good as the abducted woman. Don Patrick Harvey, John C. Reilly and John Leguizamo were good as the rest of the unit.

    The Replacements
It’s late in the season; the playoffs are fast approaching; and the Washington Sentinels have just gone on strike. Scrambling for a solution, the Sentinels’ owner Edward O’Neil hatches a plan to bring in legendary coach Jimmy McGinty to recruit a team of replacement players in exactly one week. For fans and owners alike, the strike is a disaster. But for Shane Falco and a mismatched crew of outsiders, it is the second chance they’ve waited their whole lives for.

Its hilarious in parts but its also cliched and bad in parts.

Keanu Reeves was good as Falco. Gene Hackman was good as always. Brooke Langton looked pretty. Jon Favreau, Orlando Jones and Rhys Ifans were funny.

    To Catch a Thief
Notorious cat burglar John Robie (Cary Grant) has long since retired to tend vineyards on the French Riviera. When a series of robberies is committed in his style, John must clear his name. Armed with a list of people who own the most expensive jewels currently in the area, John begins following the first owner, young Francie (Grace Kelly). When her jewels are stolen, Francie suspects John, destroying their tentative romance. John goes on the lam to catch the thief and clear his own name.

The movie is directed by Alfred Hitchcock. Did not like it much. Its very slow paced and there is no great suspense or twist. The cinematography was very good and the movie won an Oscar for Best Cinematography.

Cary Grant was good. Grace Kelly looked gorgeous and was good.

    The Fundamentals of Caring
A writer (Paul Rudd) retires after a personal tragedy and becomes a disabled teen’s caregiver. When the two embark on an impromptu road trip, their ability to cope is tested as they start to understand the importance of hope and friendship.

Good movie. Liked it. Its like a mix of The Intouchables and Me and Earl and the Dying Girl. Even though the movie is about a disabled teen there is good humor and its entertaining.

Paul Rudd was good as the caregiver who had a personal tragedy. Craig Roberts was excellent as the disabled teen with a weird sense of humor. Selena Gomez was good as Dot.

    J. Edgar
As head of the FBI for nearly 50 years, J. Edgar Hoover (Leonardo DiCaprio) becomes one of America’s most-powerful men. Serving through eight presidents and three wars, Hoover utilizes methods both ruthless and heroic to keep his country safe. Projecting a guarded persona in public and in private, he lets few into his inner circle. Among those closest to him are his protege and constant companion, Clyde Tolson (Armie Hammer), and Helen Gandy (Naomi Watts), his loyal secretary.

It started of well but the second half was bad. It dragged a lot and there wasn’t much to show. The movie shows him as bad guy but is also sympathetic to him. The movie implies that J. Edgar Hoover was gay but it also implies that his relationship with his Clyde is not physical/sexual. The old age make up was horrible – probably one of the worst.

Leonardo DiCaprio was very good as J. Edgar Hoover. Armie Hammer was good as Clyde. Naomi Watts was good as Helen.

    Watched Raman Raghav 2.0.

It is engaging but did not like the ending. The movie is about a psycho cop and a psycho serial killer and how there isn’t much difference between them.

Nawaz is very good but his role is very similar to his role from Badlapur. Vicky Kausal is very good as the cop. Sobhita Dhulipala is good as the cop’s girlfriend.

Started watching Prison Break. Finished 7 episodes of Season 1.

Liking it so far. Its obviously similar to movies like Escape from Alcatraz and The Shawshank Redemption and it even copies some scenes from them. At times there are things that seem too incredulous like the two agents going around killing people and threatening others. And there are some dumb characters doing dumb things like Veronica chatting with her ex-boyfriend when they are in hiding.

Agree that “Its a entertaining show .Very fast, edge of seat entertainer.”

“Though season 1 is best .All downhill from here .”

Oh no. Will keep watching till I get bored. Season 1 is quite long with 22 episodes though.

I got bored of The Blacklist pretty soon after just a few episodes. It became repetitive and the plots were outlandish. Couldn’t stand that pretty female character.

Finished Season 1 of Prison Break and have started watching Season 2.

The show has turned bad with all the stupid things the characters keep doing. Veronica just walks casually into the house where the vice-President’s brother is and is ordering him around and then calling the cops when she knew all along what a big conspiracy it is. Lincoln waits outside a shop and casually smiles at a person when he is on the run. Lincoln drops his gun while trying to save his son. The list goes on.

Stopped watching Prison Break after a couple of episodes in Season 3. Don’t like the show anymore. It became very annoying in Season 2 itself.

Its like Murphy’s law. Bad things keep happening to all the characters. It would seem like a plan is going to work out but no – at the last moment there is some twist and that plan will fail or backfire. Its the same format – repeated a thousand times. Ridiculous.

    Back to the Future
In this 1980s sci-fi classic, small-town California teen Marty McFly (Michael J. Fox) is thrown back into the ’50s when an experiment by his eccentric scientist friend Doc Brown (Christopher Lloyd) goes awry. Traveling through time in a modified DeLorean car, Marty encounters young versions of his parents (Crispin Glover, Lea Thompson), and must make sure that they fall in love or he’ll cease to exist. Even more dauntingly, Marty has to return to his own time and save the life of Doc Brown.

Liked it. Good entertaining movie. Action Replayy was copied from this movie and it was horrible. Can’t believe that they took such a good movie and screwed it up so badly.

Michael J. Fox was excellent as Marty. Christopher Lloyd was good as the Doc. Lea Thompson looked pretty as Lorraine. Crispin Glover was good as Marty’s dad.

    Lethal Weapon
Following the death of his wife, Los Angeles police detective Martin Riggs (Mel Gibson) becomes reckless and suicidal. When he is reassigned and partnered with Roger Murtaugh (Danny Glover), Riggs immediately clashes with the older officer. Together they uncover a massive drug-trafficking ring. As they encounter increasingly dangerous situations, Riggs and Murtaugh begin to form a bond. Riggs’ volatile behavior might just help them apprehend the criminals — if it doesn’t kill them both first.

    Brahman Naman
Naman (Shashank Arora) leads his nerdy friends on a trip to Calcutta to win prizes and lose their virginity.

Boring pretentious movie. There was nothing funny. Not sure how true to Bangalore/80s it is but felt made up. The movie is in English and its like they just translated the dialogues from the native language but its all lost in translation. The dialogues which may have been funny in native language just don’t sound funny in English.

Did not like Shashank Arora as Naman. He slouched and walked in a particular manner and it all seemed so deliberate. Anula Navlekar was good as Naina and Sindhu Sreenivasa Murthy was good as
Ash. Tanmay Dhanania was good as Ajay. Sid Mallya was ok as Ronnie in a small cameo.

    The Sting
Following the murder of a mutual friend, aspiring con man Johnny Hooker (Robert Redford) teams up with old pro Henry Gondorff (Paul Newman) to take revenge on the ruthless crime boss responsible, Doyle Lonnegan (Robert Shaw). Hooker and Gondorff set about implementing an elaborate scheme, one so crafty that Lonnegan won’t even know he’s been swindled. As their big con unfolds, however, things don’t go according to plan, requiring some last-minute improvisation by the undaunted duo.

The movie won Oscars for Best Picture, Best Director, Best Original Screenplay, Best Art Direction, Best Costume Design, Best Editing and Best Music.

The movie has a very elaborate and complicated plot though one can guess the twist. The movie is very leisurely paced and it did feel a little dated. The first con was very good. I think it was copied in some other movie.

Paul Newman was good as Gondorff and Robert Redford was good as Hooker. Robert Shaw was good as Lonnegan.

    O Kadhal Kanmani (OK Kanmani)
Because they are both unwilling to get married, a couple try out a live-in relationship.

Did not like it much. It doesn’t have any real story and its heavily inspired from The Notebook. Here the younger couple are paying guests at the older couple’s home instead of the younger couple turning into the older couple. The movie is also somewhat like Saathiya (Alai Payuthey) and here instead of marriage they are a live in couple. But the movie isn’t about any hardships they face because they are a live-in couple. There is no real resistance from any one because they are living together and they don’t have any real fights or misunderstandings because of that.

Spoiler Alert But then they have a change of heart at the end and go for marriage because they want to basically lock their “rights” or relationship as they are going to live far from each other.

The movie has Dulquer making some video game and it looked bad and they were acting as if it is something great. There is something phony or fake about the lead characters and their interactions. It felt as if it was all manufactured to make it look cute.

Dulquer Salmaan is very good looking and was quite good. Nithya Menen isn’t that pretty but she was good. Prakash Raj and Leela Samson were good.

Mani Ratnam used to be one of the best directors in the country and this usual cliched love story is not one expects from him.

    Finding Dory
Dory (Ellen DeGeneres) is a wide-eyed, blue tang fish who suffers from memory loss every 10 seconds or so. The one thing she can remember is that she somehow became separated from her parents as a child. With help from her friends Nemo and Marlin, Dory embarks on an epic adventure to find them. Her journey brings her to the Marine Life Institute, a conservatory that houses diverse ocean species. Dory now knows that her family reunion will only happen if she can save mom and dad from captivity.

Its good but not as good as Finding Nemo. Its like they wanted to make a sequel but did not have any new plot. So they just recycled the story of the first one except that now its about Dory trying to find her parents. Kids will like it though.

    Larry Crowne
Once well-respected at his company, Larry Crowne (Tom Hanks) finds himself on the unemployment line after a wave of corporate downsizing. Drowning in debt and unsure of what to do with his life, Larry enrolls in college, where he becomes part of a community of misfits who are all trying to carve out a better future. The possibility of romance enters the picture when Larry meets Mercedes Tainot (Julia Roberts), an instructor who has lost her passion for both teaching and her marriage.

Its an ok romantic comedy and found out just now that it was directed by Tom Hanks himself. Now that I think of it English Vinglish may have been slightly inspired from this. Tom Hanks is a middle aged guy who goes back to college and takes a speech class and it involves giving a speech at the end similar to a middle aged Sridevi going to an English class and giving a speech at the end.

Tom Hanks was good but he looked quite old in this one. Julia Roberts was good as usual. Wilmer Valderrama and Gugu Mbatha-Raw were good. Cedric the Entertainer was funny with his haggling.

    Deliverance
Intent on seeing the Cahulawassee River before it’s turned into one huge lake, outdoor fanatic Lewis Medlock takes his friends on a river-rafting trip they’ll never forget into the dangerous American back-country.

The movie was nominated for 3 Oscars – Best Picture, Best Director and Best Editing.

The movie has these 4 friends out on a canoeing trip and there are these inbred locals in the American back woods. There is an atmosphere of horror. The movie may have been something new and unique back then but it felt more like a B grade movie now as there have been similar movies since then. There is a dueling banjo scene which was very good. There is male rape scene (nothing explicit) which is supposed to be the first one in a mainstream movie. Drew’s death scene and their reaction to it was very weird.

Jon Voight was good as Ed. Burt Reynolds was good as the somewhat crazy Lewis. Ned Beatty was good as Bobby. Ronny Cox was good as Drew.

Pretending to be her boss, Tess initiates a major deal with an investment broker (Harrison Ford) — but things turn ugly after Katharine finds out what Tess has been up to.

Its a 80’s movie so it has some dated hairstyles and computers but its a feel good movie. Its not realistic in the way things turn out and how easily she is able to do what she wants to do. But I guess everyone who isn’t a manager or who feels that someone else stole their credit at work will like the movie.

Harrison Ford was good. Melanie Griffith was good as Tess. Sigourney Weaver was good as the credit stealing boss.

    Clueless
Shallow, rich and socially successful Cher (Alicia Silverstone) is at the top of her Beverly Hills high school’s pecking scale. Seeing herself as a matchmaker, Cher first coaxes two teachers into dating each other. Emboldened by her success, she decides to give hopelessly klutzy new student Tai (Brittany Murphy) a makeover. When Tai becomes more popular than she is, Cher realizes that her disapproving ex-stepbrother (Paul Rudd) was right about how misguided she was — and falls for him.

Its a watchable teen movie. Its based on Jane Austen’s Emma.

Alicia Silverstone looked very pretty and was good. The late Brittany Murphy was good as Tai. I did not even realize it was her till I saw the cast details just now. Paul Rudd was ok.

    Bring It On
The Toro cheerleading squad from Rancho Carne High School in San Diego has got spirit, spunk, sass and a killer routine that’s sure to land them the national championship trophy for the sixth year in a row. But for newly-elected team captain Torrance, the Toros’ road to total cheer glory takes a shady turn when she discovers that their perfectly-choreographed routines were in fact stolen from the Clovers, a hip-hop squad from East Compton, by the Toro’s former captain.

Its the usual teen school movie. Its watchable.

Kirsten Dunst was good. Eliza Dushku looked very pretty and was good. Jesse Bradford and Gabrielle Union were good too.

    Rumor Has It
Living in New York City, Sarah (Jennifer Aniston) must make the cross-country trip back to her home state of California for the wedding of her younger sister (Mena Suvari). Once with her family, Sarah learns some interesting things from her grandmother (Shirley MacLaine), including the family’s inspirational ties to the famous film “The Graduate.” But all this leads to millionaire Beau Burroughs (Kevin Costner), and Sarah wants answers — especially since Burroughs might be her real father.

Horrible disgusting movie. Never liked The Graduate and even listed it in my Most Overrated Hollywood Movies Ever post. This takes The Graduate story forward to another disgusting level using some of the same characters.

In this story Dustin Hoffman’s character is played by Kevin Costner (completely ignoring their obvious height differences) and Mrs Robinson is played by Shirley MacLaine. The daughter Katharine Ross supposedly left Kevin and then returned to marry Jennifer’s dad. Jennifer initially suspects that Kevin is her real dad and meets him and then finds out he is not her real dad. And then she sleeps with him and doesn’t return her fiance’s (Mark Ruffalo) calls.

So the same guy slept with the grandmother, mother and daughter. Sarah sleeps with Kevin knowing he was the guy with whom her mother and her grandmother slept. And not only that when Mark’s character breaks up with her she defends it as she was just drunk. And even though Mark rejects her initially in a very good scene he forgives her and marries her eventually.

This is the most ridiculous feminist nonsense that Hollywood propagates in its movies. If it was the other way round and the guy who ditched his girlfriend slept with another girl there is no way the woman will forgive and accept the cheater.
