Movies You Watched This Month – June 2013

yjhd2 Official Synopsis:
Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani is the story of the relationship between two characters, Bunny (Ranbir Kapoor) & Naina (Deepika Padukone), at two separate but defining times in their lives… first, when they are just out of college and standing on the crossroads of multiple decisions that will shape who and what they become… and then later on, in their late-twenties when they meet again, holding on to certain fulfilled and certain unfulfilled dreams, at a crossroads of another nature this time… how these two characters affect, change, befriend and eventually fall in love with each other is the journey the film aspires to take us on…

The movie is heavily inspired from DDLJ and borrows from some other movies as well. While Simran goes on a trip across Europe by asking for permission from her overbearing father Naina decides to just leave for a trekking trip to Manali by writing a letter to her overbearing mother. They both meet at the railway station just like Raj and Simran do and there is a reenactment of the DDLJ train scene where Raj helps Simran board the train. While Simran falls in love with this carefree, fun guy Raj who flirts with Simran’s friend, Naina falls in love with this carefree, fun guy Bunny who flirts with Lara. Just as Naina is about to reveal her feelings to him she finds out that he is going to US for studies.

8 years later they all meet again at their friend Aditi’s wedding. The whole second half is set against the backdrop of wedding arrangements just like DDLJ was. Then there is some Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara similarity too with Bunny and Avi sharing somewhat cold vibes and making up after a fight. There is a climax scene similarity with Band Baaja Baraat. There are some Wake Up Sid similarities too with the father-son dynamic and some scenes between Bunny and Naina in second half and Bunny becoming a cameraman instead of a photographer.

Some scenes were good like the one where Avi lashes out at Bunny saying he did not even show up at his dad’s funeral and the scene where Bunny tells Naina about his dad’s death. The best scene of the movie is the final scene between Bunny and his father.

The Madhuri Item number was totally unnecessary and just did not belong in the movie and Madhuri looked bad. There is a stupid fight scene in the first half which again was totally unnecessary. The transformation of Naina was also too sudden. The second half drags like anything with not much story and just the wedding arrangements. Aditi’s fiance and Lara dancing to Oo La La song was bad. Rana Daggubati scene was horrible.

Badtameez Dil, Balam Pichkari, Dilli Wali Girlfriend sounded good but seemed forced in the movie. Kabira and Ilahi were good and seemed appropriate in the movie. Cinematography was good in the scenic locations. Some of the scenes seemed shot on sets. Dialogues seemed wannabe while trying to sound deep whereas the casual ones were good.

Ranbir was good but the role did not really offer him much opportunity to display great acting except for the father son scenes and a couple of other scenes mentioned above. Deepika was good in the movie whether as the insecure nerd or in the comic/emotional scenes later on. Aditya Roy Kapoor was good as Avi but his role of a drunkard was similar to his Aashiqui 2 act. Farooque Sheikh was excellent as the father and Tanvi Azmi was good as the step mother too. Kalki was good as Aditi. Kunal Kapoor was partly annoying. Don’t know why Rana Daggubati agreed to do that one minute role.

The movie has a very bare bone story and there is lot of candyfloss added to it. The movie could have done away with a few songs and also some scenes to make it shorter by at least 30 minutes. If one watches it as time pass or with low expectations they might find it watchable or entertaining but this is the same cliched love story that Bollywood has been churning out since the last 20 years.

good review. agree with most of things.its a low brow mishmash of a lot of successful recent and old films.agree about the dialgues trying to sound deep , deepika’s sudden tranformation. ranbir is shown to be interested in travelling across the world but in 8 years all he did was travelled major cities in Europe 😉 the world is bigger than that. A true travelling fanatic who wants to visit every corner of the world will be as passionate as Bear Grylls and not fool around with a put-on attitude in European cities for 8 years

    Sputnik,
So which was better – Aashiqui2 or YJHD?

And you still did not tell me the last romantic movie you truly loved in many aspects from B’Wood?? 🙂

    • hithere 11 years ago

I am not sure they(bollywood directors) are capable of making one!
ps – Raincoat was boring but it was a better romantic movie than many..

      sputnik 11 years ago

Difficult to compare both – YJHD is more romantic candy floss while Aashiqui 2 was more of one singer’s self destruction.

I think WUS was more of a Ayan movie while this is almost totally KJoish movie except the father-son scenes. I forgot to mention in my review that the makemytrip promotion was cringeworthy.

Seriously don’t remember the last romantic movie that I truly loved from Bollywood.

why deepika used to carry books on the trip when she went there to take break from studies? 😀

“why deepika used to carry books on the trip when she went there to take break from studies?”

the same way 27 year old Siddharth and 25 year old Varun played School going boys in SOTY..!! 😀

            Its not the same comparison.

Since there is a dialogue that he is going for US to study for four years he must be going for Bachelors and that makes him and Deepika 17 in the movie. Ranbir is 31 and Deepika is 27 in real life. Aamir played 17 in 3 Idiots when he was 44.

Even they are inspired but by a lesser extent by your own mention of last half hour and 15-20 min. Along with the similar first half it makes it “heavily inspired”.

Yes DDLJ second half is also inspired from HAHK with the wedding background but HAHK had wedding background even in the first half and Ranbir helping out with arrangements makes it more similar to DDLJ.

            Have not seen Hangover.

Yes all superhero movies are similar and all superheroes are variations on Superman who is considered the prototype. Read this.

  3. ank_16n 11 years ago

“The whole second half is set against the backdrop of wedding arrangements just like DDLJ was.”

by that logic even Kuch kuch hota hai last half hour was also copy of DDLJ…..
    or
Remember SOTY varun’s sister wedding 15-20 min also inspired from DDLJ..!!
    or
even DDLJ 2nd half was a copy of HAHK with all those Wedding background..!!

    __________

“Then there is some Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara similarity too with Bunny and Avi sharing somewhat cold vibes and making up after a figh”

Remember Akshay khanna n Aamir khan cold vibes and making up in DCH..!!
and why can’t Hangover be a copy of DCH..???

agar aise movie heavily inspired hone lage toh Hollywood ki saari Super-Hero movies ek doosre se inspired hai…Hero trying to save the World against all odds and one Villain …..while still trying to manage between his lady love in ordinary life and saving people in his hero life..!!

    Think about it..!!

  4. Bored 11 years ago

The most funny part was Anurag Kashyap’s praises abt how this movie reverts all bollywood trends – Really? This is a poor mishmash of DDLJ and all Joharish chick-flicks. Just that Kalki is part of the cast …

Anyways, Bollywood has no idea about the romantic genre, all they can come up with are silly chick-flicks – incidentally DDLJ was one of the best chick-flicks they came up with. HAHK was more like family drama with a marriage backdrop.

Flawless A crime/drama set in 1960 London, where a soon to retire janitor convinces a glass-ceiling constrained American executive to help him steal a handful of diamonds from their employer, the London Diamond Corporation.

Movie is set in the 60s and it was engaging but the janitor and the executive discussing/arguing over the heist somewhat publicly seemed odd. And the main heist scene was also a little convenient with the security guy busy eating and not watching. The main twist also reminded of Inside Man.

Demi Moore was good but her character was a bit too panicky. Her make up as the old woman was very obvious and horrible. Michael Caine was good.

    —————

The Double Retired CIA agent Paul Shepherdson joins young FBI agent Ben Geary to track down a Russian assassin who has seemingly returned after the Cold War. Old conspiracies quickly resurface, embroiling the pair in deeper and deeper peril.

There is no suspense as to who The Double is with it being revealed pretty early on. But even after watching the whole movie still could not understand a few things. The final twist was extremely stupid and completely unnecessary and almost completely negated everything the movie showed before.

Richard Gere was good. Topher Grace seemed miscast. Martin Sheen was ok in a smaller role.

    —————-

Passion Fish May-Alice Culhane (Mary McDonnell) is a soap opera star who’s left paralyzed after a car accident and, left with few other options, returns to her Louisiana home. Her heavy drinking and bad attitude drive away all of her caregivers. That is, until Chantelle (Alfre Woodard) comes to work for her. The two women form an unlikely friendship.

Movie was engaging for the most part even though it was quite leisurely paced. The movie was nominated for Best Original Screenplay.

Mary McDonnell was excellent as the paralyzed soap opera star and she deserved the Oscar nomination for Best Actress that she got. Alfre Woodard was good as the Nurse taking care of her. David Strathairn was good too.

u r wrong….starting of movie deepika clearly mentions she is getting bore of studying something related to mbbs…remember dinner scene…
moreover ranbir was going for journalism(which is not 4year course n can even be done after bachelorls)……so u can’t cpnclude that they both were 17 or 20..!!

rest i don’t think it was inspired from ddlj……but everyone has his/her thinking so don’t have a problem with it.

acc. to me the main problem was 2nd half as after 1st half i was thinking the story would build up which never hapened ….overall movie was 1time watch n average-above average movie..!! 🙂

  8. FS 11 years ago

Shame – Don’t know what to say about this film. It was quite weird and didn’t understand what the purpose of this movie was? Totally abstract with some nudity and adult content, the movie revolves around a brother and a sister. Brother is a sex addict and likes to live a lonely life fucking, shagging and watching porn all the time. Suddenly, one day he finds his sister in his apartment that comes to stay with him for few weeks. Some sort of awkward moments happens in their lives that lead them to some sort of realization that could be understood only by the director. It is slow paced but it’s not boring may be because of the concept and certain adult contents.

The Town – It’s about people from Charles Town who rob banks and attack bank transports without leaving any proof. Ben Affleck, Jeremy Renner & their group attacks a bank, steal money and takes an employee as hostage to escape because one of the employee rings the alarm. However they leave the hostage in midway and flee from the targeted site. FBI traces down the culprits but are left with no proof to back up their claim. Ben Affleck decides to keep surveillance on the hostage but falls in love with her. Too many things happen that leads to confusion, deception and tragedy. Both Ben Affleck and Jeremy were brilliant but Jeremy stole the show with lesser screen time. Highly Recommended

IP Man 1 & 2 – Watched it again and liked it again. I think IP Man 3 has released na? Anyone has any info on that?

Seven Psychopaths – Argh… This movie contains totally psycho stuffs and hard to believe situations. Collin Farell is a writer who intends to write a book on Seven Psychopaths with the help of his close friend Sam Rockwell (Dog Kidnapper). Sam advertises an ad in newspaper that invites psychopaths to share their stories & if found genuine and interesting will put them in the movie without informing Collin. However one story inspires Collins to add in his novel but as the movie progresses he finds out that the very close friend Sam Rockwell and his acquaintance are Psychopaths as well when one of the dog owners tries to kill his friend for kidnapping his dog. It was an Okayish stuff… didn’t like much about anything in the movie.

The Sessions – This was quite a surprise to me and I really liked it. Had nothing much in the movie except the conversations between the lead and the pope, between the therapists and the lead and the feeling shared of being virgin at the age of 38 was excellent. Out of 8 sessions with the sex therapist every succeeding session makes you more interested. The performances were great and most had only facial expressions and movie was very good.

    • hithere 11 years ago

Pretty much agree with you on Sessions, The town and Shame.

ps – You may try some smaller movies “Robert and Frank” and “Hyde park on Hudson”.

“Since there is a dialogue that he is going for US to study for four years he must be going for Bachelors and that makes him and Deepika 17 in the movie.”

Whoever said, you can’t do a Bachelor program after you have done one already..unless it was prophesied in DDLJ?

Yeah people go to US to do Bachelors in Journalism after doing their Bachelors already in India and yes they hand out scholarships to undergrad students like toffees.

      • Suprabh 11 years ago

Ya ya.. You have all the arguments in the world to prove the robbed in daylight minister in S26 won’t know an ACP… But people can’t do two bachelors degree as if it’s a crime.

        • Author
          sputnik 11 years ago

I already gave you the Number of ACPs (272) in Delhi but yeah a Delhi Minister undergoes training to recognize all the ACPs (lets say 100 since it was set in 80s) in the city before he is given the post of Minister.

Yes people can do Bachelors twice/thrice any number of times. So lets assume that doing Bachelors twice is the case as you say. So that makes him what 20 if he did the regular Indian Bachelors.

I have not seen SOTY so I am assuming they played 15 year olds. A 31 old Ranbir played a 20 year old. 25/27 year olds played 15 year olds. A 27 year old Deepika played a 20 year. A 20 year old Alia played a 15 year old. Almost same age difference. So my point in response to ank_16n still stays.

          • Suprabh 11 years ago

And my argument is not regarding SOTY or ank…

My argument is against this statement of yours

“Since there is a dialogue that he is going for US to study for four years he must be going for Bachelors and that makes him and Deepika 17 in the movie.”

Even if he does a regular Indian bachelors … There’s no mention to whether he is straight out of college… He’s shown doing an internship.. before the Madhuri song. He could be doing it after the college… He could be doing the internship an year after his college got over… He could be into his 2nd or 3rd internship. I’m not suggesting any of this or all of this is definite but you are trying to mold the situation just for the heck of an argument. Your deducing what not all because of mention of 4 years is plain ignorant.

          • hithere 11 years ago

Deepika character was doing Medical (she was reading some Neuro-im.. book). They read in same Modern school in primary. So their age must be 17+. It is possible that Ranbir failed. Then I don’t see scholarship..Do they give scholarship for outside student in bachelor course. Masters – Profs have grants.

    @suprabh,

We both know who is arguing for the heck of an argument. You very well know how many students come from India to US for Masters and how many come for Bachelors and you very well know why that is – Scholarships/Financial Aid is almost non existent for Undergrad students.

Aditi reads the letter and says its a scholarship letter from North Western University (she may have said only Northwest or may be it is her accent) in Chicago for a journalism program and Avi mentions 4 years.

This is from the Journalism site of North Western University in Chicago on Financial Aid for International students.

“Students must be United States citizens or permanent residents to qualify for federal financial aid. Due to the intense, practical nature of our program, Medill does not offer teaching assistantships or fellowships. Students are strongly encouraged to research and apply for scholarship funds from outside sources to help supplement the cost of their education. We encourage international students to research and apply for scholarships for which they may be eligible (such as those that may be available from philanthropic, fraternal or non-profit organizations, or corporations, interested in supporting study abroad).”

    https://www.medill.northwestern.edu/admissions/financialaidpage.aspx?id=58509

  11. Suprabh 11 years ago

This is also from the website of north western university bachelors program.

    FINANCIAL AID FOR INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS
Northwestern University offers need-based financial aid awards to a small group of international students. Citizens of foreign countries who apply for financial aid will be reviewed as a separate group.
The usual selective admission criteria are the main factors in the admission committee’s decision. In addition, and unlike the process for U.S. citizens and permanent residents, the amount of financial aid needed by an applicant may also be a factor in a final admission decision. As a result of this need-aware approach and the limited funds available to students, Northwestern’s acceptance rate for international applicants requesting aid is less favorable than the rate of acceptance for those students not requesting aid.
Only those students who apply for and receive financial aid for their freshman year will be eligible to receive financial assistance in subsequence years. There is no financial aid available for international transfer applicants.
International students receiving financial aid from Northwestern must still plan to contribute to funding their educational expenses. For example, students will be responsible for travel expenses to the U.S. from their home country. Northwestern University cannot assume responsibility for economic changes such as currency fluctuation, nor can it replace lost support that a student may have expected to receive from relatives, spo
nsors, or government, and corporate grants.
The Office of Undergraduate Financial Aid has the most detailed and current information about Northwestern’s international financial aid policy and further instructions on how to correctly complete financial aid forms.
Students in the process of obtaining lawful permanent residency status in the United States should be aware that they cannot be considered for federal financial aid until they receive actual documentation of their immigration status.
The following is a list of acceptable documentation that establish aid eligibility.
    For Permanent Residents

Permanent Resident Card (formerly called Resident Alien Card): Form I-551 (also acceptable is the no longer used Alien Registration Receipt Card: Form I-151)
Arrival/Departure Record: Form I-94 (current) with an A-Number annotated on it with one of the following endorsements:
“Processed for I-551…” with valid expiration date
“Temporary Form I-551…” with appropriate entry information, date, and signature
Home country passport endorses “Processed for I-551” with valid expiration date
    For Other Eligible Non-Citizens

Other non-citizens may be eligible for federal financial aid. The most commonly presented evidence is a current I-94 with a stamp indicating specific status such as refugee. If you have specific questions about your status, please contact us.
International Students Planning to Pursue Advanced Degrees

International students receiving need-based financial aid from Northwestern for their undergraduate degree should be aware that this funding will not continue if they choose to pursue medical school, law school, graduate school, or any other professional studies at Northwestern University.
    Working at Northwestern

Although international students are welcome and encouraged to find on-campus employment to help pay for the cost of their education, employment on student visas is limited and the rules of employment are strictly enforced. International students who find work on-campus while studying are unlikely to earn enough money to pay for a significant portion of their expenses.

It’s not about how many people do what.. It’s about what are the possibilities. You are checking one link from present day website and saying this and that doesn’t happen today…

    1) Just because not many people come for bachelors doesn’t mean people don’t do it.

    2) you are trying to find some technical flaw in a non technical movie… Its like finding fault in S26’s romance.

All I’m saying is your deducing 17 years of based on the 4: years of course is simply ignorant and only because you want to understand it that way.

    • Author
      sputnik 11 years ago

      1) Its not about whether some students do it or not. You are trying to apply the rarest of the rare cases here. You also know very well that International students cannot apply for need based Financial Aid and if they do they do not get a visa as they have to prove that they have enough funds of their own to pay their tuition and living expenses.

“2) you are trying to find some technical flaw in a non technical movie… Its like finding fault in S26′s romance.”

So you are saying one should not find fault in romantic parts of a movie or romantic movies like YJHD. hmm Was DDLJ a technical movie and that’s why you try to find technical flaws in that all the time?

Thrillers don’t come with a tagline “Come find loopholes/flaws”. One can find flaws/loopholes in any genre.

If one argues that Masala movies are only for entertainment then thrillers are also just to thrill. There are lot of flaws/loopholes in Abbas-Mustan thrillers too and pretty much every thriller out there.

      • Suprabh 11 years ago

I don’t find flaws in DDLJ..about the schedule of Euro Rail…I find fault at the behavior of Raj which I find stupid- and I don’t make it about website links..I openly say ..its what I feel about his character..

No thrillers don’t come with taglines..but they are supposed to be intelligent in their plot and execution…You mentioned Abbas Mastan as if they are some milestone in thrillers… LMAO…They make copied Indianzied versions of hollywood thrillers…

I am not saying no movie is free of loopholes..its all about getting it as accurate as you can…and the more realistic one gets it..the more the movie is appreciated. (Difference between a movie like Memento and a movie like Basic)

You wont find people arguing on Guy Peace’s Hair color in Memento, you’d find them arguing about technicalities..Same way the whole argument about Ranbir and Deepika being 17 because Ranbir got a scholarship for a 4 year program is absurd.

        • Author
          sputnik 11 years ago

Why can’t you apply the rarest of rare cases to Raj’s behavior? Do you know how every person of Indian origin born/brought up in UK behaves or is there a rulebook for that?

Point is one can always take the rarest of rare cases to prove that anything is ok.

Anyways I did not mention the age thing in my review. I just made that age guess because of ank’s comment about the age of the characters and their age in real lives based on the line in the movie and took the normal case.

And I mentioned Abbas Mustan because they are the ones who make most of the thrillers in India and since their films do have technical flaws/loopholes. But their movies still make for a good watch because they are fast paced and thrilling.

I also mentioned “pretty much every thriller out there”. You are taking Memento which is one of the best and the rare intelligent thrillers but one can find flaws/loopholes in Oceans Eleven, The Inside Man, Headhunters and so on. They all have some implausible/incredulous twists or things happening.

          • Suprabh 11 years ago

Looks like you didn’t read my comment properly..I said I do not comment on DDLJ’s technicality…I comment on Raj’s behavior because thats an important aspect of the film and is subjective to each individual’s perception…whereas Ranbir and Deepika’s age hardly matters in YJHD

You didn’t mention that age point in the review and thats good because it would have been not worth mentioning. even I didn’t bring it up until I saw a comment from you.

Regarding abbas Mastan movies making a good watch: The point was never about that..Was it? even in my review of S26..I said its an entertaining movie..so much so that I watched it again..But that doesn’t take away the flaws it had.

And again..even I said..no thriller movie can make it without one loophole or more….What makes it better or worse is how close to accuracy does the maker makes it…Thats why an Oceans 11 is better than a Dhoom 2.

  12. ank_16n 11 years ago

to put all this argument to rest…..

their is an promotional ad on TV in india nowadays which says bunny(ranbir) is 24 years old n naina(deepika) is also 24 years old…..

so every one can use their brain n come to conclusion that whether ranbir was going for bachelors or masters…!!

Watched The Rainmaker An idealistic young lawyer and his cynical partner take on a powerful law firm representing a corrupt insurance company.

Excellent Movie. Its about how Insurance companies deny legitimate claims. While they are victorious there is also an almost cynical ending that you don’t gain anything even after you win. Some may not like that.

Francis Ford Coppola’s direction was good for the most part. Not sure if someone can just walk around hospital rooms trying to sign them up as clients. There was one scene where Danny DeVito steals from the information desk. The security cameras should catch that.

Matt Damon was good as the lawyer just out of Law School. Danny DeVito was good as his partner. Claire Danes was ok. Jon Voight was good as the attorney for the Insurance company.

P.S. Funny thing is that I had watched this movie a few years back and I kept thinking I may have watched this movie but was not sure. It all came back to me pretty much at the end 🙂

    @Sputnik,

I had enjoyed The Rainmaker very much – reading the John Grisham novel that is! (it was more than 15 years back I think) Didn’t see the movie. The novel was very gripping indeed.
Not sure if the movie is complete adaption..

I think I have watched almost all the movies adapted from his novels and loved them all – The Firm, The Pelican Brief, The Client, The Chamber, Runaway Jury and The Rainmaker.

I may have watched A Time to Kill too but not sure.

His novels I read 3-4 they were very gripping – the Firm, Pelican Brief and The Rainmaker.

I saw the movie a Time to Kill – but did not enjoy it much. Reading his books was much more exciting I guess.

    I’ve read a sizeable amount of Books/Novels.
Never liked John Grisham much though.

YJHD- decent movie.it wasn’t boring that’s a plus point.but it didn’t had deep philosophy or substantial plot.just a slightly better version of typical romcoms like ihls, emaet .
kai po che-strictly average.i liked the characters.but the film dragged. In fact it was kind of an aimless movie.the novel was better.
Baishe srabon-very good movie. It is undoubtedly better than any recent thriller of bollywood(kahaani, talaash).Srijit seems to be a very talented director.very good performance by everyone.specially prosenjit, gautam ghose, parambrata.

Watched A Walk on the Moon The world of a young housewife is turned upside down when she has an affair with a free-spirited blouse salesman.

Indian movies usually have the husband cheating/philandering and the woman is supposed to forgive him at the end when he comes back. Hollywood movies have the reverse. The woman has an affair with some guy and the husband is supposed to forgive her. And this cheating is usually shown as her having some liberating experience or breaking free from the boredom of married life or because of some great love. While they never show the reverse in such sympathetic fashion.

After watching the movie I had this above observation. Went to IMDB and I saw people making similar comments on the movie. This movie is somewhat similar to the movie Take That Waltz which was a recent release. Found one scene weird though where she leaves the house at night to meet the salesman in front of her mother-in-law despite her begging her not to.

Diane Lane is good at playing these kind of roles. Her scenes with Viggo Mortensen are similar to her scenes from Unfaithful and this released before that. Viggo Mortensen was good as the salesman and Liev Schreiber was decent as the husband. Anna Paquin was good as the teenage daughter.

Aashiqui 2 – loved the film & the brilliant performance by Aditya. Shraddha was also good, so the supporting cast as well. Major advantage of this film is its Brilliant music and appropriate placement of songs. Liked the name “Arohi” as well. Felt like to repeat this movie again after it ended. Aditya is here to stay & could be next big thing in bollywood after Ranbir.

Undersiege 1 & 2 – thanks Nirjhar for recommendingbthis movie. It is quite similar to Die hard 1 & liked both the parts especially the one-one hand to hand fight scenes. Part 1 was better than part 2 because in part 2 i didnt like the ending train shot, it was beyond imagination (ott). Highly Recommended

Stranger than fiction – The title is so apt!strange movie. Didn’t quite liked it.Mostly because of the irritating writer’s character.Liked her only in the ending . But i don’t regret checking this movie out. Except the writer rest of cast did a good job.And i loved ferell and maggi track.
17 again-Enjoyed it a lot .It had some cliched moment but overall entertaining movie.

    @Ritz, Sputnik..

I belong to minority who till now couldn’t find single novel adapted movie worthy or good one… Read JG’s The firm, pelican brief, even Da vinci code and angels n demons of Dan brown or to go back, FF’s ‘the day of jackal’.. All movie fall big time compared to Novel, may be movie can never be able to capture, pace, setting and gist of Novel World… Its only wen you have not read novel thn movie seems fine or great… I dsilike and avoid watching movies if Novel read..

When people read a novel they imagine the story taking place and every person’s imagination is different.

So I don’t think a movie adaptation can ever live up to everyone’s imagination/expectation. The movie is basically the director’s imagination of the novel and the chance of it matching with someone’s imagination is very rare.

I am a Huge DAN BROWN Fan.
“Angels & Demons” was my favourite.
Next will be “Digital Fortress” whose ending twist/secret was Mind-Blowing.
THE DA VINCI CODE was good but very very tough to Grasp.
DECEPTION POINT is easily his Worst Book till date.

Yet to read TLS and will order The INFERNO ASAP.

    .

FF’s ‘Day of the Jackal’ was quite an engaging read but got boring at times.

    .

Puzo’s GODFATHER was a Brilliant Adaptation.
LOTR and HP got it right many a times.

THE Prestige is a Superb Book-to-Movie Adaptation too.
    Also, the Bourne Series.!

Stephen King’s The SHINING was Stupendous too.

    .

They fucked up with Paolini’s ERAGON(Inheritance Series).
When I read the 4-Parts, I felt that it truly had Great Potential like LOTR/GOT.

  23. Serenzy 11 years ago

SHAWSHANK REDEMPTION, they say was a Better Adaptation than the Novels.
Same goes for FIGHT CLUB and these both are like My All-Time Favourite Movies.
    Stupendous stupendous Movies.

    .

Also heard that TGWTDT was quite a true adaptation to Larsson’s 1st Book of Triology(Not seen/read yet).

    .

THE HUNGER GAMES was good too and so will be the next two in this series.
Jennifer Lawrence takes it to another level.

    .

I pray and wish that they make a Super-Duper Adaptation to Tripathy’s “Shiva Triology”.
I’m also looking forward to Ashwin Sanghi’s Books and GOT Set by GRRM.

Man on Fire – Loved Denzel Washington’s brilliant act and Ek Ajnabee is the remake of this movie. He was good as a bodyguard but was even better as an avenger. Similarly the second half is much better and fast paced than first half. I didn’t like one thing abt this movie and that is Camera work.

Caroline – Liked the first half of this animated movie but then second half was boring to hell.

Tron Legacy – Don’t know what to say abt this movie. Liked the concept but the way it was executed was implausible. I liked most of the thing on the Grid and some vfx, special effects were brilliant. Didn’t like both the actors neither the plot.

LA Confidential – Fantastic Movie and one of the best films on detectives solving the homicide cases. It has Fantastic performances by every actor and Higly Recommended.

PS: Feeling bored to write on movies.

    FS Bhai,
I can talk – Food, Movies, Books/Novels, Hindi Film Songs and Gadgets – all day long.
Started slowly but now they’ve turned into an obsession.

We can gladly add Cricket, Bollywood Box-Office and Guitar Chords/Notes to that to a small extent 😀

we? lol i don’t talk much abt cricket nor I knw how to play guitar. But yes abt boxoffice, movies etc…

Commando – After watching this movie I felt Vidyut should work in Hollywood or else he should shoot most part of his films on Foreign location so that they can hire foreign “hooligans” to stand against vidyut’s agile & flexible moves with powerful impact. The camera work was not good and songs act as hurdles. Villian was good including his jokes but i really couldn’t see Vidyut’s true potential in this movie. there was hardly any trained martial art guy in the movie who had guts to have one – one fight against Vidyut but even the white guy couldn’t display of what he was capable of or may be the action choreographer itself was not qualified enough to choreograph action sequences. He was totally one man army in the movie and it looked like he was just practicing his skills in this movie.

In any action movie, especially the film that relies on Protagonist Martial Art, Kung fu, etc… should have equally strong opponent who is also an expertise on martial art/kung fu etc…

Have you read Bourne Series before watching Movie(s)????

Ask me.. I have not slept 3 days, may be jut for few hours due to Robert ludlum’s master piece of thriller novel… Movie is good, even my fav series but cant match Book…. I have 1st hand experince of Bourne series novels… same way for Day of jackal, Eagle has landed ( itt took me 7 months and pan india search and thn found it at small book store in Indore)…

War of the Worlds – First half was very good and thrilling but the second half was totally bullshit

Ajami – It’s an abstract movie about revolving around arabs and jewish people within tel-aviv area. Film is really good but the director could have avoided the repetition and this repetition occurs as it might have been adapted exactly the same from the novel. It has 3-4 stories that somehow interconnected and each story is different. It also gives you an idea about Israel and Palestine.

Buried – Very good movie with an excellent performance from Ryan Reynolds. The movie has nothing but to show a man in the coffin buried underground with a mobile phone and a lighter and was really surprised the way it kept me engrossed till the end. It deserved some credits and very rarest of its kind.

    • Author
      sputnik 11 years ago

Agree on Buried. Had watched and commented on it back in February.

“Watched Buried Paul is a U.S. truck driver working in Iraq. After an attack by a group of Iraqis he wakes to find he is buried alive inside a wooden coffin, with only a lighter, flask, flashlight, knife, glowsticks, pen and a mobile phone to help him escape before the oxygen in the coffin runs out.

The whole movie has only one actor Ryan Reynolds on screen and it is completely shot in the coffin. All we hear are voices of people he talks to by making or receiving phone calls.

Liked the movie. It was very interesting and engrossing. It is a indictment of US and American culture. Ryan Reynolds was excellent as the man trapped in the coffin. Direction was very good.

Spoiler Alert The movie does not have a happy ending so people looking for that may be disappointed.”

Thanks for your October Sky Recommendation.

October Sky The true story of Homer Hickam, a coal miner’s son who was inspired by the first Sputnik launch to take up rocketry against his father’s wishes.

Very good movie. Liked it a lot. The movie is a bit like Rudy with him being from a small town who works in a coal mine instead of a steel mill and wanting to go to college and the father son relationship.

Homer Hickam went on to become a NASA Engineer who trained astronauts on space missions. There are some cinematic liberties taken like turning 6 guys into 4 by combining two of them into one and eliminating another and so on. Not sure if his exhibit was stolen in real life but it looked a bit filmy with the father stopping the mine strike to help his son and all.

Best part of the movie were the home movie clips of the real people shown at the end.

Jake Gyllenhaal was good but he seems to act in a similar way and do similar roles where he is nerdy or different (Donnie Darko, Zodiac). Chris Cooper was excellent as the father who wants his son to work in the coal mines just like him. Laura Dern was ok.

This movie needs to be shown in science classes in schools to inspire kids.

Have any of you guys watched Match Point 2005? – Well it really came to me as a surprise especially the ending. There is something about the film that I may not be able to explain but it is an excellent film. It has beautifully captured One’s desires of lust, greed, luck, wealth, lifestyle, marriage, betrayal and actions under state of anxiety/fear.

Performances, direction and settings compliment each other sublimely. Screenplay is excellent and it is in British accent, so watch it with subtitles as the dialogue delivery is really fast unlike usual hollywood movies. Highly Recommended

Yeah saw it long time back and liked it. Also watched The Numbers Station and have similar views as yours.

      ————-

The Numbers Station A disgraced black ops agent is dispatched to a remote CIA broadcast station to protect a code operator. Soon, they find themselves in a life-or-death struggle to stop a deadly plot before it’s too late.

Slow paced movie which was boring and interesting only in bits. Since most of the action takes place inside and there are only two main characters it looked like a low budget thriller.

John Cusack was ok but he seemed miscast for the role. Malin Akerman was annoying in some scenes and ok in some scenes.

Watched the Oscar nominated Israeli movie Ajami. A powerful crime drama set on the streets of Jaffa’s Ajami neighborhood – a melting pot of cultures and conflicting views among Jews, Muslims and Christians – and told through the eyes of a cross-section of the city’s inhabitants: a young Israeli Arab (Shahir Kabaha) fighting a criminal vendetta against his family, a Palestinian refugee (Ibrahim Frege) working illegally to finance a life-saving surgery, a Jewish police detective (Eran Naim) obsessed with finding his missing brother, and an affluent Palestinian (Scandar Copti) dreaming of a future with his Jewish girlfriend.

The movie was like a Israeli version of the movie Crash but made in a documentary fashion. The movie leaves the first story somewhat incomplete. Did not like the ending. Taking the kid brother in the car when going to sell drugs just because he was throwing a tantrum seemed ridiculous. Also if Binj died of a drug overdose wouldn’t the cops search his place?

Performances were good by everyone. The movie doesn’t show anyone as completely bad or completely good. The movie was slow paced and a bit too long. They could have edited some scenes.

P.S. This was on my list for some time. Thanks to FS for reminding me of this movie.

    superb review of yjhd

We Are The Youth of The Nation. Like, Totally.
    Posted on June 9, 2013 | 33 Comments

So ‘Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani’ made a 100+ crores this week, of which 98.3 came from Ranbir fans who have heartgasms every time he does something awesome, such as appear on screen. The rest came from the coffers of The Gentleman’s Society For Appreciation of Slow-Mo Champagne Spray On Deepika.

YJHD is the story of Kabir aka Bunny, who sets out to forge his own path, makes mistakes and discovers true love in the end. This is different from Ranbir in Wake Up Sid, where he sets out to forge his own path, makes mistakes and discovers true love in the end, and of course, that was nothing like Rockstar, where he sets out to forge his own path and then puts Nargis Fakhri in a coma by having sex with her. (Although with her range of expressions, it’s hard to tell exactly when she went comatose.)

This isn’t to say that YJHD is a terrible film. It’s not. It’s basic “dal-chawal”, except it’s being described in the way five-star hotels do it, i.e. “Steamed fine long grain white rice hand-picked in the emerald green lap of the Vindhyas, accompanied by a golden lentil soup that was gently simmered over the smouldering kisses of angels.”

It says a lot when, in a youth film, the only character that makes a mark is the father (played endearingly by Farooque Shaikh.) I just wanted to reach out and give the poor man a hug. The last time I felt so bad for Farooque Shaikh was when David Dhawan dropped a giant, steaming Pile No.1 on Chashme Buddoor.

There are currently two major entities that try and define the youth of India. One is Chetan Bhagat, whose characters exist in easily marketable groups and talk in the most badly grammar you will finding anywhere Orkut roxxx. The second is Bollywood, which, on occasion, does a great job, and on another occasion, tried to convince us that Shahrukh was a college student by dressing him up in a blue-green Polo Sport condom.

One film that worked for my generation was Dil Chahta Hai, which was slick and funny enough for us to ignore the fact that Aamir Khan had been celebrating the end of college since QSQT in 1988. Then there was Lakshya, where Hrithik Roshan did a fine job of portraying angst, especially when his jiggly facial muscles kicked in. Seriously, just look at any Hrithik film. At some point during intense emotional scenes, a continuous wave of ripples starts dancing across his face, as if he just swallowed a vibrator.

There are some tropes that Bollywood loves to use. For example, the modern-yet-sufficiently-pious-for-family-crowd heroine, who loves going to the temple. Deepika is super religious for the first half of YJHD, only to have that trait disappear in the second half, probably because she realised that she was a hottie and did not want to be godblocked by religion. Kajol sang bhajans to impress Amrish Puri in DDLJ, which was weird:

Kajol: Dad, I want to travel around Europe with my girlfriends.

Dad: That’s crazy. Now go spend the rest of your life with some gaonwala that you’ve never met.

    Kajol:

Dad: Aww. Mogambo melt hua. Okay, go. Just don’t sleep with strangers. That’s what arranged marriages are for.

Then there’s the concept of eternal, undying love, which young characters in Bollywood seem to possess in copious amounts. We fell for it as kids, but it doesn’t hold up now. Again, take DDLJ – one of the most romantic films ever, about an aimless rich kid who falls for Ms. Goody Two Chappals even though he barely knows her, chases her across continents, befriends her family and finally, some blood and punches later, asks for her hand. This is also the story of Darr.

And hey, Kuch Kuch Hota Hai fans, if you stay hung up on your college friend for ten years, then you should just marry your basketball. Even during YJHD, when the rest of the theatre was ooh-ing and aah-ing over Ranbir’s decision to put the brakes on his dream to marry Deepika, people like me were thinking, “OK, so they’re happy now, but soon enough, he’ll start resenting her. He’ll feel stifled, they’ll grow distant, one or both of them will have affairs and then end up battling each other over curtains and shared lip gloss.”

Then again, people like me aren’t really the target audience for such films. YJHD will end up being DCH-meets-DDLJ for a lot of people, which is natural. Meanwhile, we’ll be judging silently in the corner. It’s easy to spot us. We’re the ones in Polo Sport.

Swordsmen – It’s a film that stars the actor of IP Man (Donnei Yen) who lives a normal life in one of the village soon finds himself as a suspect by killing unintentionally one of the most wanted criminal of the state in order to save a grocery owner. But the detective is so sure about the suspect being highly trained and deliberately murdered the robbers that he goes to city to get a warrant against him. Soon one finds out that the detective is true and Donnei Yen is highly skilled trained killer/butcher that escaped 10 years ago from the clan.

Well I didn’t like the direction of the film nor how it was executed. It had the same old chinese kung fu flavors that we have seen so many times earlier.

The Perks of Being a Wallflower – This is a definitely one of the better films on teenagers to come out in recent times. I Loved the beautiful chemistry between Charlie (Logan) and Sam (Emma Stone), the friendship between the three friends and their group’s fun and masti. Well don’t want to say anything about the story because that’s what you have to see but it has really sweet love story along with forever friendship kind of stuff. Thanks Suprabh Highly Recommended!!!

Winter’s Bone – Simple story with subtle treatment of screenplay and excellent performance by Jennifer Lawrence is what you get from Winter’s Bone. The outlook of this film is completely different and so is the community. Lawrence has to find out her dad in order to retain her house and look after his kid brother and sister because his dad (a drug dealer) was granted the bail on the property papers. This about her struggle to find her dad, take care of her sick mother and kid brother and sister but other supporting casts also does well. Highly Recommended!!!

12 Monkeys – It’s a strange film but I liked the treatment, screenplay and direction of the film. Loved Brad Pitt and he is just fantastic as a lunatic and it is one of his best performance I guess. Srk has copied some of his acting style in MNIK and repeated it during the whole film. I didn’t liked Bruce Wills performance that much but he too was brilliant in some of the scenes. Highly Recommended!!!

    Watched Stoker and The Border

Stoker An impressionable teenager grieving for her late father lives with her unstable mother and is bewitched by her enigmatic uncle, who has mysterious motives for his sudden appearance in her life.

Weird movie. Some may find it disturbing. It had an eerie atmosphere and incestuous undertones. But the main twist/flashback was quite bad. It reminded me of the movie 8*10 Tasveer.

Mia Wasikowska was good as the weird teenager. Nicole Kidman was ok. Matthew Goode was good as the enigmatic uncle.

    —————–

The Border Border patrol guard Charlie Smith is plagued by a guilty conscience when, after moving to El Paso with his wife, he goes on the take and helps to smuggle aliens across the border for work as farmhands on U.S. ranches.

This was a 1982 movie and what was shown in the movie back then probably happens even now. Movie was slow paced and it did show how poor the illegal aliens are and what they have to go through to cross the border daily.

Did not understand parts of the movie though. Jack Nicholson and Harvey Keitel were good.

  35. FS 11 years ago

The Shining – I thought I had never watched this movie but as the movie progressed I started recollecting faint memories of this film. I think i had liked this film back then but now it looked to me more of Psycho film than Psycho-horror thriller. I got irritated so many times with the background music played to scare the audience unnecessarily. The opening scene is just spectacular capturing the beautiful lush greenery, icy mountains and hill side driveways, but didn’t like this film that much…

Ek thi Dayan – The first half of the movie was not so good the way critics were praising and even not as bad as the critics were criticizing but it definitely had way more chutiyatic/worst climax than most critics/criticizer criticized. Emraan was good so was konkana, huma qureshi & kalki but all four were worst when they were required to be fearless (Emran), scary (konkana), dangerous (huma) and outspoken (kalki) respectively. Most pathetic climax that is even worse than some horror serials.

  36. FS 11 years ago

Atonement – Beautiful movie with excellent direction, brilliant screenplay and perfectly paced first half. Second half is also very good but lacked pace. It dragged a while but it also had excellent Cinematography. The Chemistry, performances and dialogue delivery was just great. Has all the ingredients of love, infatuation, reparation, emotions, redemption, chemistry, innocence and beautiful ending. Highly Recommended!!!

Luv Shuv Tey Chicken Khurana On the run from a dangerous UK gangster, Omi returns to his native village in Punjab, pretending to be a London lawyer. Much has changed since Omi ran away from home after stealing money from his doting grandfather, Darji. The old man has since become senile and most importantly, forgotten the secret recipe of “Chicken Khurana” a dish that made the Khurana dhaba (restaurant) famous across Punjab. Omi’s childhood sweetheart, Harman is soon to be married to his cousin, Jeet. Will Omi be able to cover his deceit and lies for long and recover the lost recipe of Chicken Khurana.

Liked the movie. It was entertaining and good time pass. Did not like the Gangster angle and they could have probably avoided that.

Performances were good by everyone – Kunal Kapoor, Huma Qureshi, Rajesh Sharma, Vipin Sharma
Dolly Ahluwalia, Vinod Nagpal, Rahul Bagga and Rajendra Sethi.

Director is pretty successful IMO , he conveyed what he wanted to with ease. liked the quirky sense of humor. overall i liked it.

Gone baby Gone – A private investigator is appointed/hired to investigate young child Amanda’s abduction who also gets assistance from the two senior police officials end up loosing the child when they were very close in rescuing the child. Same incident repeats in near by neighborhood and this time young boy (probably 7yrs old) gets abducted. The private investigator accidentally end up finding out the kidnappers but fails to rescue the boy alive. However after the search and rescue operation, private investigator finds out that the information provided during the investigation of little girl Amanda’s kidnapping were false and later the plot unfolds the mystery behind the kidnapping.

Casey Affleck was good and direction was also good, Casey is no different from Ben affleck in terms of expressions, dialogue delivery and voice. However the film is slow paced and tried to adopt more realistic approach but they have also included some cheesy dialogues as well.

Watched Czech movie Kolya which won the 1996 Oscar for Best Foreign Language film. Franta Louka is a concert cellist in Soviet-occupied Czechoslovakia, a confirmed bachelor and a lady’s man. Having lost his place in the state orchestra, he must make ends meet by playing at funerals and painting tombstones. But he has run up a large debt, and when his friend, the grave-digger Mr. Broz, suggests a scheme for making a lot of money by marrying a Russian woman so that she can get her Czech papers, he reluctantly agrees. She takes advantage of the situation to emigrate to West Germany, to her lover; and leaves her five-year-old son with his grandmother; when the grandmother dies, Kolya must come and live with his stepfather.

Movie was good especially the relationship between Louka and the kid. Initially they cannot communicate because they don’t speak the same language but slowly he begins to take care of the kid and there is a beautiful relationship. The scene where the kid gets left on the metro train was very good.

Zdeněk Svěrák acted well and he resembles Sean Connery a bit. Andrei Chalimon, the kid was cute and acted well.

    Watched Commando and The Contract

Commando Captain Karanvir Dogra, a commando of the Indian Army crashes into the Chinese side. The Indian Government simply deny his existence. Karan escapes from the Chinese side and runs into a girl, Simrit who is escaping from Amrit Kanwal Singh’s goons.

Most of the movie looked like a B-Grade movie or a movie from the 90s with the hero and heroine being chased by the goons. The action scenes were excellent especially the one where he rescues the girl and the one where he storms the villain’s fort. The fight scene between Vidyut and the white guy should have been better – even that looked one sided. I think there should have been more fight scenes in the movie.

Vidyut Jamwal was excellent in the fight scenes and was not bad at acting. Pooja Chopra was irritating in a lot of scenes. Jaideep Ahlawat was good as the pyscho villain but the movie needed a villain who could match Vidyut in the fight sequences. I did not like his jokes and I found that no pupil thing unnecessary and annoying but a dialogue at the end somewhat justified its use in the movie.

The movie should have been a complete action movie rather than this cliched love story. I think Vidyut deserves a better action movie with a good director.

    —————-

The Contract Ray Keene (John Cusack), a father who wants to redeem himself in the eyes of his son (Jamie Anderson), is trying to bring Carden (Morgan Freeman), a world-class assassin to justice. All the while, he must protect his son and evade the assassin’s team who are methodically hunting them down in the wilderness.

Did not like the movie. All the mountain scenes seemed like they did not belong in this movie. Was bored by the end of it and I did not even care what was happening.

John Cusack was ok. Morgan Freeman was good.

good review of commando sputnik. i said almost the same thing (not for the first time) 😉 as you in my review. i dont think with someone as talented as vidyut at helm, you need frills of masala, item numbers etc. The film needs to be lauded for its ground breaking action, for indian stds, and vidyut deserves more work.i want commando 2 to be herione-less,masala-less and in the vein of tom yum goong and raid redemption – in short, a badass action porn 😀

Closer – “Did you Cum?” would have been apt title for this movie… Its actually the verbal porn movie more than love quadrangle and it is very good. Performances are also excellent. Both Natalie Portman and Julia Roberts looked as hot and beautiful as ever. Jude law and Clive Oven also did a fantastic job… I think this movie is little under rated and it should have been rated above 8 in IMDB. Highly Recommended!!!

The Graduate 1967 – This movie is excellent but I didn’t like the actor. Can’t believe its Dustin Hoffman and so expressionless in this movie. Did his character demanded him to be expressionless? Kind of funny to accept the climax but as it turns out to happen within American Culture, I Guess the climax is plausible. Highly recommended!!!

Unbowed 2012 – Another very good movie based one true story about court-room drama and this time it’s about professors fight for justice against judiciary’s illegitimate rulings and misusing its power to put him behind bars on charges of attacking the judge with a lethal weapon. Highly Recommended!!!

Black Hawk Down – Fantastic film with fantastic background score, awesome editing and brilliant cinematography. The film looked so real as if i was watching the live action in Somalia and even the performances by those somalians who just had nothing to do but die and create a ruckus made it more realistic. Again Hans Zimmer is the man behind the background music score Highly Recommended!!!

Internal Affairs When a newly minted Internal Affairs investigator trains his crosshairs on a manipulative, corrupt cop who’s been involved in police brutality for years, the pursuit of justice turns into a personal vendetta in this slick thriller.

Bad and weird movie. Looked low budget and like a TV serial. Background music was horrible.

Richard Gere was excellent in a negative role as a psycho cop. Andy Garcia seemed miscast for the role. William Baldwin was good. Nancy Travis and Laurie Metcalf were ok.

Korean movie is Infernal Affairs and this is Internal Affairs. Have not seen that one. Liked The Departed.

Droh Kaal which released in 1994 is similar in concept – with undercover cops working among the naxalites and spying on their activities and cops working as informers for the naxalites.

I had liked that movie a lot back when it released but on a recent watch I thought the movie had a little too much discussion.

Jerry Maguire – Not sure whether i liked the movie overall but sure there were few very good scenes and good performances. Tom Cruise as Agent was really good but over acted too much in many scenes. some scenes were irritating as well.

Kiss Kiss Bang Bang – What a stupid movie man and rated so highly on IMDB? It is like one of those thakela bollywood type of movie. The comedy scenes brought not laugh nor there was anything to appreciate abt it. Highly avoidable

Break Ke Baad An independent-minded young woman with a long-time boyfriend longs to be by herself.

Awful movie. They took bits from Friends and Seinfeld and turned into a long pointless movie. They also added that irritating movie scenes and references which Karan Johar did in movies like IHLS and Dostana.

Imran Khan was annoying as hell with his fast talking and eyebrows. Deepika was in Baba’s patented “Slutty Savitri” mode.

Ronin 1998 – Very good movie with excellent performance by Robert De Neiro… It has two excellent car chases and both are fantastically shot. I really liked the way camera work was handled during the shoot of the car chase that seemed bona fide. The editing was done elegantly peeling off the complicity as and when needed without any flashbacks or drawbacks 😛 It hurls at you many surprises as the movie progresses and to understand where the movie is heading. Highly Recommended!!!

Tears of the Sun – It’s about “Bruce Willis plays a Special-Ops commander who leads his team into the jungle of Nigeria to rescue a doctor played by Monica Belluci who will only go with them if they agree to rescue 70 refugees too – IMDB”.

Movie was good time pass entertainer and i really liked two scenes. One – When they kill the Gorilla rebels in an ambush when these rebels were killing the people of opposite cast/tribe in one of the village.
Two – The last scene when they bomb the militants – The firework was awesome.

    Dus Tola – Missed watching it from the beginning but from where I started it, something really interesting was going on and I ended up liking the film. I just fell in love with this new actress named “Pallavi Sharda”. She has very small role but she essayed her role brilliantly and sure whoever have seen the movie might have noticed her big time 😉 A small interesting biography I found abt her on IMDB that says;

“””””Pallavi Sharda is an international film and theatre actress and dancer. Pallavi knew even as a child that the stage and screen were her calling. She was inducted into the classical Indian dance form of Bharatha Natyam when she was just three years old in her home town of Melbourne, Australia. Thus began her unwavering commitment to the practice and propagation of classical, folk and contemporary Indian dance. As a child, any moment that Pallavi had free, she was miming in front of the bathroom mirror or performing grand dance recitals in her bedroom. By the time she was a teenager, Pallavi had given over 100 stage performances.

Born to two PhD parents, Pallavi was academically gifted. She obtained an academic scholarship to Lowther Hall Anglican Grammar School in Melbourne and was given a double promotion from 8th to 10th grade, completing high school in five years. Pallavi commenced her triple degrees of Law, Media & Communications and French at the prestigious University of Melbourne when she was sixteen years old.

In 2008, after also fast-tracking her tertiary education from six to five years, Pallavi shifted base from Melbourne to Mumbai to realise her childhood dream of becoming an Indian film actress. After making an appearance in ‘My Name is Khan’, Pallavi spent time in the USA where she shot Indo-American film ‘Walkaway’ in early 2009. Pallavi returned to India to play the role of ‘Geeta-the village dancer’, in Warner Bros’ ‘Dus Tola’ which marks her official debut into the Bollywood film industry.

Pallavi was crowned Miss India Australia in March 2010. Just two days after winning the title Pallavi suffered a severe fall but within days flew to Durban, South Africa where she partook in the Miss India Worldwide competition with stitches in her chin and right hand. She performed a classical dance piece at the event with the use of only one hand. Pallavi was officially commended for the zest and courage she displayed throughout the competition. She cited her reasons for participating despite her injuries as wanting to be a positive role model for young men and women of the Indian diaspora. Pallavi’s work in the performing arts has rendered her a well-known young leader in Australia and she remains especially passionate about the empowerment and global representation of young Indian-Australians.””””

Watched Ronin When a briefcase with undisclosed contents being sought by both Irish terrorists and the Russian mob makes its way into criminals’ hands, a squad of mercenaries is assembled to recover the case.

Movie was interesting/entertaining for a while but it was way too long. Car chases were good. Robert De Niro looked constipated or suffering from Parkinson’s disease in the final car chase scene. The actual contents of the briefcase are not revealed just like in Pulp Fiction.

Robert De Niro was good except for final car chase scene. Jean Reno, Natascha McElhone, Stellan Skarsgård, Jonathan Pryce all were good.

Revolutionary Road A young couple living in a Connecticut suburb during the mid-1950s struggle to come to terms with their personal problems while trying to raise their two children. Based on a novel by Richard Yates.

Movie was good but not everyone will like it. Some may find it very depressing and hate the ending.

Leonardo DiCaprio was excellent as someone who hates his job but is afraid to take a risk. Kate Winslet was very good as the depressed housewife who just wants to get away. Michael Shannon was very good but his Oscar nomination for Supporting Actor seemed a stretch since he had like only two scenes. Kathy Bates was ok.

After the Wedding To save the failing orphanage he runs in India, Danish transplant Jacob Petersen returns to his homeland to meet a self-indulgent businessman named Jørgen who’s offered a generous donation — and represents everything the noble-minded Jacob abhors.

Movie was nominated for an Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film in 2007. It was partly good but way too long. The Indian orphanage angle did not work and looked forced. The father daughter scenes after he finds out that he had a daughter were good.

Mads Mikkelsen was good. Stine Fischer Christensen who played the daughter was very good. Rest of the cast was decent.

Red 2010 – A Former retired CIA (Bruce Willis) agent is being attacked by CIA officials in order to execute him. He finds out the reason behind the attack and with few former CIA friends and Russian Intelligence he gets to the bottom of it. It was more of style and attitude with lot of good humor in between. Enjoyed it.

Ranjhnaa is defined by two of the dialogues – “larki and rocket insan ko kahin bhi le jaate hai “and “Tum shahrukh to ho nahi ki larki maan jayegi uska peecha karne se to vinod mehra ban jao “. Ranjhnaa is story of kundan wooing the girl from start to end , starting from following srk pattern( expressive show of emotion and following the girl ) to vinod mehra pattern( staying near girl and helping her silently) to woo her.
First half is fun and moves very fast , but the second half where he follows vinod mehra charter of romance being with the girl, helping her silently in whatever way possible , the romance part takes back stage but still being undertone of the new situations kundan have been thrown into because of this girl. The climax is letdown as the twist and or the shock factor they were trying to put in, hasnt come through well as seeing the development and behavior of the characters it was evident what’s going to happen.
Dhanush is brilliant as lover who is crazy after the girl- katwaaoing his chutia knowingly (called as true aashiq) and sometimes resentful, Sonam looked beautiful and played the role of a girl who uses her beauty to get her work done with great innocence. Mohammad zeeshan and swara bahskar are also terrific.
But all these performances are enhanced by some brilliant one liners and dialogues which look convincing and are actually hilarious …

I will rate it 4/5 kind

Watched the 2002 Oscar winner for Best Foreign Language Film Nowhere in Africa Shortly before the outbreak of World War II, a Jewish couple and their young daughter emigrate from Germany to Kenya to escape the Nazis, and are forced to come to terms with a new life on an unfamiliar continent.

The movie was scenic – shot in Africa but it did not really have much of a story and it just went on and on. It is based on a true story but there should have been something more in the movie apart from the reason why they moved there. There were some camera zoom shots which seemed amateurish. Don’t know how this movie even got nominated let alone winning an Oscar.

Merab Ninidze was ok. Did not like Juliane Köhler the lead actress. Sidede Onyulo, the Kenyan actor was very good. The daughter was played by two girls at different ages and both were good.

Watchmen – This film is about some retired superhero’s that are back in action due to the mysterious death of one of its member called “comedian”. Rorschach is one among these superhero’s who starts investigating the murder of fellow comedian that some how linked to the Nuclear War between USA and USSR. It is slow as hell and the climax is big letdown. Zack Snyder created such a character in the form of Dr. Manhattan who is nothing less than God, still failed create such an impact. I liked some part of it and disliked some part. Overall, a potential blockbuster entertainer went wrong. It doesn’t fall either between A batman type or Superman type of film.

Ranjhana – Everyone liked the first half but i liked the second half more. The editing is brilliant and so is cinematography. Loved every bit of it and the songs and background score compliments the progress of the film. Supporting cast are also brilliant.

Dhanush should improve his Hindi diction as it didn’t matter in this film (coz he is Tamilian’s son) but it will matter in other movies. After watching his 3am moonu (tamil) I was convinced that he is one of the versatile actors we have and had no doubts about his acting. Some scenes are really memorable. This film truly deserves every bit of success.

The Call A veteran 911 operator Jordan takes a life-altering call from a teenage girl who has been kidnapped and thrown into the trunk of a madman’s car. But with the clock ticking, Jordan soon realizes she must confront a killer from her past to put an end to a serial killer’s haunting rampage.

Its a cheesy masala movie which borrows plot points from many movies like Taken, Pyscho, The Silence of the Lambs and Oldboy. It is a screenplay of convenience – like the girl having an extra cell phone to call after her first one breaks when she runs into the kidnapper, screwdriver and paint cans being there in the trunk and the kidnapper not killing the girl even when she is causing him problems.

The 911 call operator then decides to become the hero herself and goes to the serial killer’s place. The ending is also quite silly.

    • Suprabh 11 years ago

Here’s my review of the call from some time back

The Call WWE films finally get it right with “The Call” (although I am yet to see Dead man Down) . Its a sharp thriller with no real mystery or suspense but its the whole execution of the events that make it gripping. A girl has been kidnapped by a Serial Killer and its the story of how she somehow makes a call to 911 and what happens after. More than 70% of the movie takes place during the call made by the girl- Abigail Breslin (remember Olive from Little miss sunshine) to the 9-1-1 operator Hally Berry. What fascinated me most was how the whole movie is based on the functioning of 9-1-1 and the police system. Their synchronization and how important is the role of a 9-1-1 operator. How small things can lead to disastrous situations and how small ideas can take you out of death’s grip. The Call is quite engaging for most of its duration but the climax would definitely disappoint after the great build up. Despite its final minute flaws I would still recommend it.

The 911 call operator part was good. It showed how tough their job is (having to listen to distress calls) and how one small mistake of theirs could cost someone their life. But the 911 operator going by herself was plain stupid and the ending was quite silly.

I liked the movie, it is very good and the actor does a fantastic job. End is quite filmy but you won’t find it cliched because you want it to end that way.

    Watched Raanjhanaa,

    Story

The movies is an adaptation of Saagar and Kabhi Haan Kabhi Naa with some nonsensical political buffoonery thrown in the second half. First half is entertaining with light hearted moments but stretched towards the end. The second half of the film is absolutely pointless. After the movie was over I couldn’t understand why the hell was the second half even there. Its such a big drag that it feels irritating for most of its part. Had the movie ended at the first half, I would have manged to like it.

    Performances:
Dhanush acts good…and this guy is here to stay if offered script backed powerful roles. Having said that, he was over the top quite a few times..but not that he’d be repulsive…He was brilliant in some scenes and totally passable in some..

The best performer of the film by a huge distance was Mohammed Zeeshan Ayyub who played Murari- Kundan’s friend..He stole the show with his diction, lines and a spot on natural performance. His performance is THE major reason, people will find the first half entertaining enough.

Sonam was decent to good and non-irritating quite unlike her previous movies.

Swara Bhaskar was fantastic and much better than sonam among the female performances.

Direction: Very very mediocre. The movie survives on its performances and some fresh chemistry..other than that its an extremely mediocre film that has absolutely nothing to offer.

After Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna, this was the second film, where at the interval I actually believed that film is about to end in a few minutes.

The second half is one of the most absurd and pointless things I have ever seen on screen, which has no meaning and no sense. Its not romantic, its not selfless love, its plain and simple Drag.

All in all it could have been much better but ends up being a mediocre flick with formulaic non sense.

Saved by good performances it just barely remains watchable to an extent.

I have just opposite feeling about the movie. The first half was breezy and light but I felt restless. May be the story was not moving. The second half contained unconvincing political story..in spite of farce-ness I liked it. May be it was created enough tension for me.

ps – Went on Saturday for night show and it was sold out at couple of places . Went today for evening show and it was 40-50% full.

Watched Raanjhanaa and agree with you on most points. Liked the first half but second half was a total drag and unnecessary with all the political nonsense. Liked the ending and the final twist though.

      What’s the Saagar part?

First half does remind of Kabhi Haan Kabhi Naa – one scene is almost same when a dressed up Dhanush goes to receive Sonam at the railway station and his friend causes break down of her father’s car similar to how SRK punctures Deepak Tijori’s car.

The second half reminded of Yuva and the stage play scenes Halla Bol. The flashback scenes of Sonam and Abhay Deol were crap. What was the point of Sonam speaking in English with Abhay in that scene? And how can Sonam not remember Dhanush after she comes back?

Some scenes were excellent like the breakup scene and Dhanush confronting Abhay scene.

Dhanush was excellent in the first half but he was not that good in the 2nd half. He was over the top quite a few times like the Rasna scene and the political scenes. He also copies Rajnikanth a lot. Sonam was ok. Mohammed Zeeshan Ayyub and Swara Bhaskar both were excellent. Abhay Deol was ok.

Saw Deepika Amin aka Deepika Deshpande who played Sonam’s mom after a long time. Used to watch her in the 90s in the TV serial Farmaan which was set in Hyderabad.

“And how can Sonam not remember Dhanush after she comes back?”

Yes but the second half ruined all the great work of the first half. The first half and second half are like two different films – the Arvind Kejriwal and Sheila Dikshit track just did not belong in this movie.

I don’t think the editing/direction were slick. If they were then there would not have been those political/Delhi scenes which were really cheesy.

Sonam could have just fallen in love with some guy in college – he did not have to be a politician. With Dhanush causing his death she would have hated him anyways and the movie would still have him trying to redeem himself and movie could have the same ending even then.

If that had been the case I would have loved this movie. The movie could have been a great one and a half hour movie but the director stretched it to make it a 2 and a half hour movie.

          • Baba 11 years ago

i dont think the political angle ruined the film. it was not totally irrelevant bcos sonam fell in love with abahy precisely due to his skills in political/social domain. she was mostly an introvert in her school life.that explains how she may have got infatuated with another avg personality like dhanush during her school days. once she was back from delhi after higher studies, she didnt consider dhanush to be worthy of a good social status. it is only in the second half when dhanush saves her from the police etc and becomes an active member in her party, she notices his worth.

having said this, i think those delhi scenes should have been curtailed. the film should have been shorter.the screenplay and direction, overall is indeed brilliant and slick in many scenes like the sonam-CM conversation. and the climax is again artistically done.

But glad for Dhanush – he is getting all the attention he deserves.

@Sputnik – yes, he copies Rajni a lot.

    Baba,

Sonam falling in love with Abhay scenes were horrible. Even he was misbehaving with her and she suddenly says one sentence in English and she got her confidence back? It reminded me of that scene where Anil Kapoor speaks in English in Virasat and Amrish Puri feeling proud. The cops chasing Abhay and all those scenes were crap.

All those Chor discussion and Dhanush asking for votes scenes were cheesy as hell. Only Dhanush speaking with Tamilian guy was ok.

Sonam not thinking Dhanush worthy of her after she grew up did not need a political angle.

She doesn’t notice/care about Dhanush’s worth even in the second half right till the end. She wanted to become the hero after Abhay’s death and he was stealing her thunder. The fighting with cops and being sprayed with water belong to Satyagraha not this movie.

    • Baba 11 years ago

sonam was not playing some perfect character that she will analyse abhays traits logically. she was playing a girl who is totally low on self confidence when she goes to aligarh (she says that in the film too).In delhi, she is in awe of abhays social persona bcos she lacks it in her real life. so sonam not thinking dhanush to be worthy of her needed a political/social angle.will not debate further on this angle. i dont think it was difficult to understand.

she realises his worth but is not sympathetic to him till the end (for the reasons you mentioned) .thats the difference.

regarding vote scenes, i think some scenes were unnecessary like the asking for votes as you said. those scenes should have been deleted. movie would have been shorter and i always prefer shorter films 😀

I am especially happy that TQ north Indian Public like rks and suprabh have also appreciated Dhanush work.

Now I think he is direct competition to Salman. Dhanush is the only person who will beat Salman by a distance in footfalls. But unfortunately the irony is that footfalls will not be in theaters but on footpaths or gutters ..or of a farmer who is taking the last walk towards a tree to hang himself to get rid of all his troubles.

Pseudo intellectual people only value Riksha wala’s opinion more because they have a vehicle and they proudly earn from it – but there are people who don’t own an Auto/Rikshaw and/or Worse — cant even afford to take a ride in it. It costs a bomb for them. These people are bhangis / kaamwali bai’s / building contract workers/ and thousands of slum people in cities/lakhs of tribals harrased by Naxalites in interiors/Lakhs of farmers in India .
And these people represent India – Real India !!

ritz – why are you forgetting me? a tq north indian and a very big anti-south indian 😀 dhanush managed to impress me as well. but i am skeptical of his career in bw. this was a smart move by dhanush. he chose the right film. he is aware of his weaknesses unlike the top stars like surya and vikram who in their delusion made lame debuts in hindi films and got rejected first day. what dhanush achieved is something remarkable but lets see how far he can take it.

  71. Anjanpur685Miles 11 years ago

LOL Baba – I agree about Vikram/Surya thing. But my above comment was more to do with Salman fanatics than anything about Dhanush 😀

ps: I do this often these days – explaining a joke / dig 🙁
Time for me to improve my senseless humor

  72. Suprabh 11 years ago

I think everyone almost unanimously agrees that Dhanush was good in the film.

However, people may just be applying Dhanush’s performance to everything in the film. I feel that’s just expanding the appriciation too much. The film in itself was a major letdown

I don’t deny Babaji’s statement that yes with a tamilian – not so good looking guy in the lead, Raanjhana’s success is indeed bigger but even having said so, I think its a mediocre movie. Dhanush was good but nothing exceptional. even his friend Murari (zeeshan) was at least twice as good as him in the movie…so all those who talk about success, should also keep that in mind.

    • hithere 11 years ago

Murari role contain punches which give instant gratification. He was good in delivering them. Swara Bhaskar had similar role in Tanu Weds Manu.

  73. Anjanpur685Miles 11 years ago

“Dhanush was good but nothing exceptional. even his friend Murari (zeeshan) was at least twice as good as him in the movie…so all those who talk about success, should also keep that in mind.”

    @Suprabh

The above can be said about any XYZ side actor to bring down main lead. Its an old tradition in Indian cinema. Ofcourse I havent seen the movie – but just my observation of how ppl get irritated wen they dont like something from heart.

compared to your earlier comment, I think this is more to do with over-hype/over-adulation of Dhanush.

I had liked the trailer and liked that other guy’s acting when reacting to “sanjuooo” scene or in the scene where Dhanush says “yeh banaras hai” …the other guy was good in that 1 second scene too. ..(he was flying a kite?) the way he looks at Sun/light was damn good when Dhanush says “Yeah Banaras hai” – he is elevating the effect of that line by that gesture of his. If you know what I mean.

    https://www.youtube.com/watch&v=ER9vmhxFucg#t=110s

But then can you replace Dhanush with that guy and the movie would have been same or better? I would like to know honestly .

    • Suprabh 11 years ago

      Ritz,

I get your point..but i’d just say give the movie a watch and decide for yourself. I was in a theater with 70-75% south Indian crowd..and trust me, the most whistles and claps were in the first half and 99% of them involving Zeeshan (he played dhanush’s friend)..I understand the stereotype of elevating side actor to pull down the main lead…but I didn’t comment for that purpose….If i wanted to bring dhanush down,,I could have quoted many scenes from second half.

RGV famously or infamously did that with Aamir when he said the waiter was better than Aamir in that hotel scene 🙂

Murari’s character is like that of Aamir’s friend in Rangeela. People like those sidekick characters who provide laughs or seeti maar dialogues but that does not mean they were better than the lead actor.

  74. FS 11 years ago

swara bhaskar was manhandled by dhanush almost through out the film and it seemed liked as if she deliberately wanted to be manhandled 😛

    • Author
      sputnik 11 years ago

Did not like those manhandling scenes. Some people had issues with how Salman’s character treated Sonakshi in Dabangg which was also set in a small town. The scene where Sonam was giving Bhashan on how guys tease girls looked bad specially in a movie when Sonam seemed to like the same things. She likes Abhay despite him manhandling her.

Enemies of the State – One of my fav from hollywood, Will Smith (as Robert Dean – lawyer) becomes one of the targets of NSA successfully pulls of a miracle to save himself in the end. You get totally engrossed into the film from the beginning to the end. It has that usual FBI/CIA like stuff (this time NSA) and unlike a Bourne/MI/Bond type Hero, it has an ordinary man that takes NSA for a ride with the help of a former NSA agent. Excellent performances by every one and I really liked the chase sequences here. You can hardly find any OTT stuff or implausible stuffs pulled off from nowhere. Excellent action thriller movie and Highly Recommended!!!

Have downloaded few stuffs of Charlie Chaplin’s and planning to watch these movies in coming weeks. Right now I have started with:

*****Spoiler Alert – Entire Story in a coconut shell 😛 ******

Charlie Chaplin’s City Lights 1931 – Starts with a bang in a Charlie Chaplin signature style and then gets into the plot. He likes a blind girl that sells flowers on the streets, becomes a dearest friend of a wealthy guy by saving him from committing suicide that likes to be drunk most of the time and looses memory as soon he comes to his senses (Pankaj Kapoor’s character in Matru ki Bijli ka Mandola is inspired from this character). He impresess the girl with his friends money and a little show off of generosity but soon times comes when he has to do it something on his own to save his girl’s rented apartment that falls into possession if she fails to make a rental deposit of $20. He does many things to get the money but fails and suddenly his friend is back from europe drunk who offers him $1000 and takes him to home as usual. At home, his frnds get attacked by thieves and he calls for help from police but instead he gets framed for the robbery as his frnd again looses his memory and fails to identify him. However he escapes and gives all the money to the blind girl for rental and eye operation. After few months he comes out of jail, finds his girl with a flower shop that identifies him. The Story is beautiful and there are so many sequences that you laugh out like a hell.. Its a complete laugh riot especially the boxing match. Highly Recommended!!!

  77. hithere 11 years ago

Fukrey – Timepass. Could have been far better with good screenplay.
Ankur Arora Murder Case – Not bad. Climax could have been better handled and movie could have been little dark.
Oz The Great and Powerful – Kiddish. Predicable. You can skip. Kids may like it.

ENEMY OF THE STATE is a Fulltoo Pacy/Thrilling Movie with the Usual FBI/CIA Theme.
Loved Gene Hackman’s Role/Character in it and also the way they Monitor Will Smith.!

        • ank_16n 11 years ago

Liked Mississippi Burning, Unforgiven, The Firm, The Quick and the Dead, The Chamber and Runaway Jury a lot.

Mississippi Burning was remade/copied as Aakrosh. Unforgiven is a western directed by Clint Eastwood which won Oscar for Best Picture and Best Director. The Quick and the Dead is also a western.

The Firm, Runaway Jury and The Chamber are courtroom dramas.

Under Suspicion and Heist are ok movies.

            ———

Had commented on Freedom Writers some time back.

Movies You Watched This Month – May 2013

Dead Poet’s Society is set in a strict disciplinarian elite school whereas Freedom Writers is set in a school filled with students who are from low income neighborhoods prone to taking to crime. Mohabbatein is inspired/copied from Dead Poet’s Society.

No way out, Crimson Tide, Superman…

    FS Bhai,
Well there is VANTAGE POINT which is Thrilling and Superfast and Unique in it’s Own way.
Another one is UNTHINKABLE which might Shock you as a Movie too(Just watch out for Samuel L. Jackson’s Performance in this movie).

Also watch The WHISTLEBLOWER if you can for Rachel Wiesz ka Performance and the Shock Factor.

The DEVIL’S DOUBLE is another Superb Movie(but Horrible Last 20-Minutes) with a Terrific Lead Act by Dominic Cooper.
Underrated but a MUST WATCH/HIGHLY RECCOMENDED.

    .

I sometimes feel it’s high time now that B’wood too makes a Fast-Paced, Thriller Movie like this involving Politicians, Govt. Ministries/Agencies, Police Depts., CBI/IB etc.

KAHAANI and WEDNESDAY are the only two that come to my mind.

    • FS 11 years ago

Thanks Serenzy… Have put to download all the recommendations by you and sputnik.

I agree that there is lot of scope for fast paced thrillers in bollywood but problem is that they can’t even make the remakes worth watching let alone the new concept or scripts.

Dangerous Minds In this blackboard-jungle drama based on a true story, Michelle Pfeiffer stars as LouAnne Johnson, a Marine turned teacher who squares off against a classroom of impudent, inner-city teens, whose bullying tactics nearly drive her out the first day.

Its based on the true story of LouAnne Johnson. Movie was ok. One can say it follows the standard template of teacher movies. I had watched this movie in part/full long time back. Watched it again because I was reminded of this movie when I watched Freedom Writers recently. Freedom Writers (even though it is also based on a true story) is basically a recycled version of this movie.

Michelle Pfeiffer was good as the teacher. George Dzundza was good in a small supporting role. Found out that Wade Dominguez (who played a student who dies in the movie) died 3 years after the release of the movie due to respiratory failure. He was good in the movie.

Hoosiers High school basketball is king in small-town Indiana, and the 1954 Hickory Huskers are all hope and no talent. But their new coach, abrasive and unlikable Norman Dale, whips the team into shape … while also inciting controversy.

The movie is based or inspired from a true story (with lot of changes) and is considered by many to be one of the best sports based movies ever. While I found the movie entertaining I did not like the movie that much. Its a 1986 movie so may be I have watched this too late after having seen similar themed movies.

The movie starts off with the coach talking about playing as a team but they start winning only after the star player shows up and its pretty much all his show. There is a player’s drunkard father who later becomes the assistant coach angle which started off well but halfway into the movie his character suddenly gets hospitalized and there are cheesy scenes of him in a hospital. The speech scenes were too short and not that good. Background music was bad but surprisingly it was nominated for an Oscar.

Gene Hackman was good as the coach. Did not like Barbara Hershey’s acting and her role. Dennis Hopper won an Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actor for this movie. While he was good initially his acting was so cheesy and bad in the later parts. Performances by the rest of the cast were decent.

Watched Streets of Fire and At Close Range

Streets of Fire Tough ex-soldier Tom Cody springs into action when a depraved motorcycle gang kidnaps his former girlfriend, Ellen, who’s now a famous singer. Besides being pitted against the gang’s leader, Cody must contend with Ellen’s manager.

Watched this because had read that Tezaab is inspired/copied from this. While Tezaab is indeed inspired from this movie it was way better than this from what I remember.

This was a bad B-grade movie. It is a 1980s movie but it looked like it was set in the 1950s – the cars, bikes, dialogues, songs and all. It also has some really weird costumes. Found out that the movie was a critical and commercial flop. Its really funny that the director thought he could make a sequel of this movie.

Michael Paré was trying so hard to be this cool action hero and it looked so wannabe. Did not even realize initially that it was Diane Lane as she looked completely different in the movie with a different hairstyle. Rick Moranis was annoying as the manager with his tough act. Amy Madigan also was wannabe with her tough woman act. William Dafoe was so laughable in his silly costume (which looked so gay) as the villain.

    —————

At Close Range Reunited with his criminal father for the first time in years, tough teen Brad Whitewood Jr. thinks he’s found his ticket to an exciting life of crime, only to learn that his amoral father is more vicious than young Brad ever imagined.

Liked the movie even though it was slow paced. It is based on a true story Link. There were one disturbing scene in the movie but it happened in real.

Sean Penn was good except in the final scene where he hammed. Christopher Walken was excellent as the bad guy. Chris Penn was ok as the younger brother. Did not know that Chris Penn (who played Nice Guy Eddie in Reservoir Dogs) is Sean Penn’s real brother and that he died in 2006 at the age of 40.

Back to School Self-made millionaire Thornton Melon decides to get a better education and enrolls at his son Jason’s college. While Jason tries to fit in with his fellow students, Thornton struggles to gain his son’s respect, giving way to hilarious antics.

Liked the movie. It was funny and entertaining though some of it is 80s style comedy.

Had read that Main Hoon Na is inspired/copied from this movie. While the basic plot of Main Hoon Na may seem similar to this its actually parts of Munna Bhai M.B.B.S. that are inspired/copied from this movie. Thornton Melon’s scenes with the Dean in class and having professionals write assignments for him and having to take a final oral exam where the Dean asks him questions looked similar.

Rodney Dangerfield was good. Sally Kellerman was overacting. Keith Gordon and Terry Farrell were ok. A very young Robert Downey Jr. has a small role and he looked so funny in this. Paxton Whitehead was very good as the Dean and Boman Irani copied him a lot.

    Watched VTV : LOVED IT

Vinnaithandi Varuvaya (VTV) is very simple story told in a mesmerizing way. The plot of the movie is like any other rom- com but what take it several notches higher, is the script and the way director envisioned the script and brought it onto the screen. It’s a love story between two characters – Karthik (played by Silambarasan) and Jessie (Trisha). Karthik is a jobless engineer who wanted to be a film- maker, pretty clear in his thoughts, stubborn, dreamer, perseverant and madly in love with Jessie. Jessie is simple and yet confused and torn between her love for karthik and her parents who would not let her marry a Hindu boy as she is a Christian. The Film boasts of some mesmerizing moments between the two lead actors- sometimes full of love, sometimes anger, sometimes frustration making it look pretty real and giving viewers a feel as if “yes this is the way it happens in real life” Both Silambarasan and trisha brings a gamut of expression (extreme frustration, joy, love, anger) associated with various situations there life goes through without going over the top. The guy who played, the friend of Simbu is also brilliant brings some genuine laughter moments in the movie.

The best part about this movie is that despite having a very simple and regular rom-com plot, it doesn’t ever get predictable. As the movie looks to move in certain direction, there is beautiful twist to make one cling on to the movie. Despite all those twists the movie it has its heart at right place – remains truthful to the basic plot. The photography is brilliant. Cinematography is beautiful, have captured some of the most beautiful locations.

Some of the best scenes are

The Kerala meet up between Karthik and Simbu.

    The marriage break up scene

    Trisha Love confession

Last half an hour and the climax are brilliant.

    I will rate it 10/10

If you can download BBC’s Planet Earth series. I have watched 3 episodes of it that are Visually Stunning, Mind-blowing and Mesmerizing.

PS: Its Baraka and not Bakara.. Correct it..

  97. Anjanpur685Miles 11 years ago

@FS Oops I cant correct the spelling now. Thanks for pointing out FS. 🙂 I was so much in awe of the movie that I misspelled it. 😉

Planet Earth I will download. I think I saw parts of it on some channels. Thanks for recco.

Agree that its visuals are awesome (especially for a movie shot in 1992!) ..But this one is not only about visuals (Baraka) – it has more to do with mankind / it’s belief’s etc etc …well if you get time watch it fully instead of skimming through it. I love the pace of it. 🙂 Each and every scene is well thought of – and has divine and scientific background score! (well thought of scientifically on how human mind responds to scenes / visuals )

In one particulate scene – there is a TDK/TDKR vibe in it. (in music – in an army scene after exact 1hr or so)
