InsideOutOfficial Synopsis
Growing up can be a bumpy road, and it’s no exception for Riley, who is uprooted from her Midwest life when her father starts a new job in San Francisco. Like all of us, Riley is guided by her emotions – Joy (Amy Poehler), Fear (Bill Hader), Anger (Lewis Black), Disgust (Mindy Kaling) and Sadness (Phyllis Smith). The emotions live in Headquarters, the control center inside Riley’s mind, where they help advise her through everyday life. As Riley and her emotions struggle to adjust to a new life in San Francisco, turmoil ensues in Headquarters. Although Joy, Riley’s main and most important emotion, tries to keep things positive, the emotions conflict on how best to navigate a new city, house and school.

The concept of the movie which many might think of as innovative or original is unfortunately not. The movie is basically an animated version of the TV sitcom Herman’s Head. Here is the intro of Herman’s Head.

And here is the pilot episode of Herman’s Head.

Amy Poehler is good as Joy who wants to keep Riley always happy. Phyllis Smith of The Office is good as Sadness. Lewis Black, the famous stand up comedian is aptly chosen as Anger. Mindy Kaling is good as Disgust.

Inside Out is not as entertaining as Pixar’s previous movies like Finding Nemo or Cars. It is entertaining or funny in parts but is more of a emotional tearjerker or a sad movie. Little kids will not enjoy it as much as they enjoyed Finding Nemo or Cars. Its more for the slightly older kids who can understand what the movie is about.

I watched this in theater and before the movie started there was a short Lava by Pixar. Initially I thought I was in the wrong auditorium but then googled and found out that this short movie is going to be played before Inside Out.

It was so crappy and boring and seemed like it would never end.

Blacklist Season 1 – Interesting and entertaining. You won’t get bored for a minute.

Hannibal – Season 1 – The director seemed to show perfunctory interest in the beginning of the season and lacked good direction but in the end he picked it up and the series became more interesting. Looking for Season 2.

Cowboy Bebop – Almost completed half of the season Still not able to understand why it is rated so high on IMDB with so many votes. Could it be because of its futuristic adventure shown during 90’s itself? Well its an animation series btw.

Wolf Children – Very delightful and subtle animation movie about two wolf children and the struggle their mother faces during their upbringing. Loved it and again it turned out to be Japanese movie.

Dragon Blade – the movie has Jackie Chan, Adrien Broody and John Cuscak at the helm still it failed to meet the expectations. It is a fun ride but overpowered by implausible emotions and drama. Adrian Broody is my pick even though he had very little part in the movie. he was Fantastic.

    Nobody’s Fool
Paul Newman received an Oscar nod for his turn as Donald, a loner who walked out on his family years ago and now lives in a small town in New York, spending his days working for a contractor named Carl and flirting with Carl’s wife.

Its directed by Robert Benton who directed Kramer vs Kramer. It was nominated for an Oscar for Best Adapted Screenplay. Have very mixed feelings about the movie. Its good and subtle in parts but its also very sentimental and schmaltzy in parts. There is a folksy small town setting where everyone knows everyone and everyone is good. Its overlong and feels like a saga and many will not like the ending. There are some good one liners by Paul Newman and others.

Paul Newman was excellent and deserved the Oscar nomination that he got. In some ways his role is similar to his earlier roles from The Hustler and The Verdict. Jessica Tandy was good in a role similar to her role from Driving Miss Daisy. Bruce Willis is good in a supporting role. Melanie Griffith was very good with the flirting.

      Thanks for the recco @cr7.

The first 30 minutes were excellent and I was expecting the movie like to be like The Descendants and Nebraska which were also directed by Alexander Payne. Liked the movie overall and it was good. But I was kind of disappointed as I had higher expectations after the great start.

      ————-

      Election
Tracy Flick appears to have the election for student council president sewn up until a teacher rounds up a worthy opponent: a popular football player.

Matthew Broderick was good as the teacher. Reese Witherspoon was excellent as Tracy Flick. Chris Klein was good as Paul in a role that he has played in other movies like the American Pie series and Say It Isn’t so. Jessica Campbell was excellent as Tammy.

Tanu weds manu returns– Naive story-line but very entertaining with good comedy scenes .

Baahubali – Go watch it on big screen. You probably have not seen anything like this on Indian cinema. I was restless in some scenes (Kingdom scenes and loud dialogues) in first half but second half is just electrifying.

ps – I saw it in Hindi and third friday show was 90% full.

    Bajrangi Bhaijaan – Want to say three things;

One of the Best Movie in last 2 decades
Best performance of Salman Khan in his entire Career
    Best Movie of 2015

    Highly Recommended!!!

Hannibal Season 2 – Disappointed with the season.

Spy – Good slap stick comedy.

Bajrangi Bhaijaan : Had gone in with low expectations in spite of the good reviews and was pleasantly surprised. The movie has a good plot, good direction and great performances from everyone including bits and pieces parts. The little girl is supercute and very expressive. Kareena imoresses in a small role as do Sharat Saxena and Rajesh Sharma. Salman is wonderfully restrained and emotes well foe a change. He doesn’t get any over the top dialogues or action scenes yet manages to deliver a very good performance. Nawazuddin is the scene stealer in the second half and does a brilliant job. He gets the best lines and delivers them with aplomb. Cinematography is very good and music is used well, especially the slow tuneful numbers. Overall, a very good movie. Should click big time with family audiences.

Watched a Telugu movie Sri Ranga Neethulu from 1983. Not sure if it has been remade in Hindi. I think Rohit Shetty can remake this one into a hit movie. The movie reminded me of Hrishikesh Mukherjee’s movies specially Chupke Chupke in that every one enacts a drama to teach the old patriarch a lesson.

In this the Satyanarayana is considered a well respected man by everyone who keeps giving Neethulu (rules/lectures) to others. He drives out his daughter who marries a Christian guy. He himself has a secret second marriage and a daughter from that. Sridevi arrives as his daughter from the secret marriage but she is not. Vijayashanti is the actual daughter. Nageswara Rao finds out the whole story early on and he goes on about with his drama/play. He romances with Sridevi much to the consternation of Satyanarayana who thinks his son is romancing his own step sister. Comedy was good and the dialogues were good.

Akkineni Nageswara Rao was 60 years old when he did this movie and was fat and looked like a 40 year old. But he was was good acting wise. Sridevi was good. Vijayashanti was ok in a small role. Satyanarayana was very good as the father.

    Watched Detective Byomkesh Bakshy!

Did not like it at all. Such a long, boring and over indulgent movie. The story which may seem so complicated or confusing is a plot of convenience. Almost the entire movie is shot in arty bad lighting. The only good thing about the movie was the art direction.

Sushant Singh Rajput was bad as Byomkesh Bakshy. He had no screen presence or charm whatsoever and he was mumbling his lines. Swastika Mukherjee was pathetic as the seductive actress. The actor who played Guha was good initially but he hammed a lot in the end.

Devadasu (Old Telugu 1953) and Devdas (Old Hindi 1955)

Watched Devadasu (Old Telugu) on Friday and Devdas (Old Hindi) today. Have not read the novel so I do not know which one is more faithful to the novel. There are some differences between the two versions. There are some scenes in the Telugu version which are not in the Hindi version and vice versa. Some scenes are better in the Telugu version and some are better in the Hindi version. Both are quite long and it takes some patience to watch them specially in the 2nd half.

The Telugu version has more scenes of childhood. While the children singing songs and some of their scenes are a bit irritating in the Telugu version they kind of give more background to their relationship. The Hindi version felt like it was skipping or fast forwarding over their lives. The Telugu version has some unnecessary South Indian sentimental scenes like prasad falling off or a diya turning off or Paro praying and so on. The Telugu version has more scenes of Paro with her family showing how great and self sacrificing she is. In the Telugu version Devdas tells his father more forcefully that he is going to marry Paro. The father emotionally blackmails his son by giving him a gun and telling him to shoot him and go marry Paro. I think that made it more believable. The Telugu version has excellent songs and the songs in the Hindi version are no match to the Telugu version.

The Hindi version has some beggar/baba singing a song and another scene which felt totally unnecessary. There is a scene where Chandramukhi visits Devdas’s bhabhi scene which is not there in the Telugu version. The Hindi version has more social commentary scenes and dialogues in scenes of Chandramukhi which are absent in the Telugu version. The Hindi version is shot in real locations whereas many scenes of the Telugu version are shot on set.

ANR was excellent as Devdas in the Telugu version. He played it as a very passionate lover in the initial part and then as someone who is completely heartbroken. He looked like a drunkard consistently in the 2nd half and looked weak like someone who was about to die. Savitri was good but I did not like her acting much because of all the silly southern sentimental scenes. She did not seem sad in the later part of the movie. She overacts in the final scene falling multiple times while running to Devdas. Lalitha was just ok. She was no match to Vyjayantimala. Ranga Rao was excellent as the father.

Dilip was good but not as good as ANR. Dilip never looked as someone who is passionately in love. Dilip was drunk in one scene and in the next scene he looked completely fresh with a clean shave. He did not look like someone who is about to die. Suchitra Sen was very good both in the 1st and 2nd half. She portrayed the sadness very well in the 2nd half. Vyjayanthimala was very good as Chandramukhi. Devdas meets Chunni Lal in the train and starts drinking again. This scene is not there in the Telugu version.

Overall I think the Telugu version is better. The story flows better in the Telugu version.

    • Ritz 9 years ago

      Again, completely disagree.

Maybe Telugu movie was better. But Dilip Kumar was best as Devdas. You say “Dilip never looked as someone who is passionately in love.”
      Agree

      ANR was better there

“Dilip was drunk in one scene and in the next scene he looked completely fresh with a clean shave. ”

Its editing which has to be blamed.

” Suchitra Sen was very good both in the 1st and 2nd half. She portrayed the sadness very well in the 2nd half. Vyjayanthimala was very good as Chandramukhi. Devdas meets Chunni Lal in the train and starts drinking again. This scene is not there in the Telugu version.

Overall I think the Telugu version is better. The story flows better in the Telugu version”

I think the way Dilip Kumar played a loser is the crux. Look at the song “jise tu koobool kar le” etc….Dilip Kumar played a domplete loser in this.. Akkineni rao hile brilliant actor, loses out on this.

we may compare movies, but Dilip Kumar played far better role than ANR. As an ultimate loser. Just watch the the song “jise tu kabool kar le” . ANR never looked so much of a loser or drunkard in any scene of the movie.

Saw this clip from Spanish film “The Secret in Their Eyes” (had watched the film back then and loved it).
The long shot is amazing …of the stadium to closeup of faces. I dont know how they did it. (must be some trick involved).

    Gundamma Katha (Telugu)

Its a 1962 Telugu movie inspired by Shakespeare’s The Taming of the Shrew. The first half was very entertaining and had a good story but there was no story in the 2nd half. The movie could have ended at end of 1st half itself but they dragged it to make it a two and a half hour movie. Some of the stuff may seem misogynist from today’s standards.

NTR was excellent specially in the 1st half. He has the best role and he totally stole the show. ANR did not have a good role and he was just ok. He has a bigger screen time in the 2nd half but the whole story looked forced. Savitri was good. Jamuna was ok. Suryakantham who was famous for playing bad stepmother or mother-in-law was good as usual. Chaya Devi was ok in a negative role. Ramana Reddy was good in a comic role. SV Ranga Rao had a small role but he was good as usual.

    N. T. Rama Rao, Suryakantam, S. V. Ranga Rao, Akkineni Nageswara Rao, Jamuna Ramanarao, Savitri, Ramana Reddy, Rajanala Kaleswara Rao, Chaya Devi, L. Vijayalakshmi and Haranath.

    Kung Fu Hustle
Watched the movie again after 9 years or so. Its an ok movie. You can enjoy it if you watch it with friends or if you don’t take it seriously.

When I tried to watch it the first time I did not like it and had stopped watching after a few minutes. Then after a few days I watched the movie with some friends and liked it a lot back then. I think it was more because we were having fun at the movie’s OTT sequences.

  16. cr7 9 years ago

Baahubali – I tried . But even after multiple attempts couldn’t watch beyond first hour .Full of cliches and extremely stupid story line .

  17. Ritz 9 years ago

    Disagree.

Yes its over-indulgent, but its brilliant take on desi detective.

In the TV serial all was only narrative. No real scenes.

I dont think even TV serial Byomkesh had real charm, (when u r criticizing hero here – Sushant. ) The story and the director are real heroes.

I think this is how Byomkesh should have been. Not when he sits and talks abt all the cases without showing real scenes (TV boring narrative)

Also dont agree with Guha character. He played perfect role in ending the film ….

    Looking forward to a sequel.

PS: Its not arty bad lighting. Its perfect setup for the theme of the movie. Infact Dibankar talked abt reducing the lights in the broad sunlight in the climax scene.

The Byomkesh Bakshy is the worst serial on detective I have ever seen. All narration — no real scenes no real investigation, nothing at all.

    • Ritz 9 years ago

One would better be off reading a book than watching all that boring narrative by Byomkesh in TV serial.

  18. Ritz 9 years ago

Damn i lost a long comment.

Agree that Dilip Kumar never looked he was in love. But thats what the novel says – he is arrogant, he hit paro too.

He is not a lovable character.

In later parts of the film Dilip Kumar played a perfect loser. ANR just doesnt have that. Look at the song “jise tu kabool kar le” and Dilip Kumar acting in that.

As a movie you may compare Telugu version with Hindi, but if you consider character developement of Dilip Kumar (arrogant lover) to a total loser and a drunkard, ANR is far behind.

PS: Devdas , as far as i know was not a loveable character and treated his lovers badly.

  19. Ritz 9 years ago

Devdas, is a story of a loser, an arrogant loser. There is no reason why these two women loved him so much.

There was nothing in him for these women to like. Thats how he was.

  20. Ritz 9 years ago

The Telugu version has excellent songs and the songs in the Hindi version are no match to the Telugu version.

Now now , this is ur personal opinion. I think Hindi Devdas songs are best. Especiallly, the childhood songs or when Devdas grows up !!

Meghe Dhaka Tara (bengali) – directed by Ritwik Ghatak.
Loved it very much. Especially the ending.

  22. Ritz 9 years ago

    Fandry –

(plot summary from IMDB) Love, the most beautiful emotion in all living creatures that God has made knows no bar, caste or boundaries, is the central theme of Fandry. A young lad (Jabya) falls in love with his classmate. Incidentally, he belongs to a lower caste, a family below the poverty line which does all sorts of jobs in the village to survive like catching Pigs and the girl belongs to a higher caste. His parents are working hard to arrange money for their daughter’s wedding while Jabya is collecting money for new clothes to impress the girl. Fandry is a story of his aspirations, quest, sorrows, anguish and frustrations. Fandry also touches upon the age old monster of Caste System which is still lurking large upon the society.

But in short – it tells have we really achieved freedom?

Excellent movie. Its available on youtube with english subtitles.
    Must watch.

    • Ritz 9 years ago

Want to add couple of points about Fandry and Meghe Dhake Tara.

Fandry is very raw and it touches subject of almost untouchability. Fandry means a “Soor” ( a pig). The last 30 mins of Fandry when the boy is humiliated in front of his classmates catching a a pig will move you. And also the the climax when he revolts against the local gundas …who treat them as pigs(Fandry).

About Meghe Dhake Tara – the music is excellent. I havent seen a story like this in any language earlier. Its completely emotional in the ending. If I had an elder sister I would have loved it far more btw.

    About Elly
After years abroad, Ahmad returns to his native Iran to recover from his recent divorce, where he joins some old pals on a trip to the Caspian Sea. His friend also invites Elly, a young teacher who may be the cure for Ahmad’s broken heart.

Its a Iranian movie from Asghar Farhadi, the director of the Oscar winning A Separation. This came out before A Separation but its similar to it in that the whole movie revolves around a single tragic incident and the aftermath. This one has more characters but this also deals with lies and half truths.

Its very engrossing for a major part of it but it is also a bit too long at close to 2 hrs and feels a little stretched at the end. Hated the character (Arash’s mother) and found Sepideh’s character’s behavior infuriating.

Golshifteh Farahani was excellent as Sepideh. Shahab Hosseini was good as Ahmed. Taraneh Alidoosti looked pretty as Elly. Peyman Moaadi was very good. The rest of the cast was good too.

Thanks to @cr7 for the recco.

Watched About Elly again. There is a scene early on in the movie where Elly talks to her mother on the phone. I did not pay much attention to what she says the first time as I thought it was just a casual scene. But what she says to her mother assumes so much importance later on. Elly is judged and misunderstood later on because of the one line that she says to her mother.

I don’t think there is any other director who makes movies like Asghar Farhadi in which a seemingly innocuous line assumes so much significance later on. You have to listen to each line and watch each character’s behavior and expressions closely coz they can assume so much significance later on. His characters are all imperfect – neither totally positive or totally negative. And the ones who cause problems are the ones who are either very idealistic or who have the best intentions.

      • Anjanpur685Miles 9 years ago

Havent seen the movie but … “in which a seemingly innocuous line assumes so much significance later on.”

    Bheja Fry 2

Was bit skeptical before watching this as IMDB ratings are low. But it was good timepass movie. Vinay Pathak was good, Kay Kay Memon was good. Amol Gupte played an interesting part. A good film to watch on weekend with family/friends.

    Madame Bovary
Emma Bovary’s passions overwhelm her vows of marriage when the dashing Marquis d’Andervilliers steals her heart, ultimately leading her to ruin.

It was very slow paced and boring. Maya Memsaab which was an official adaptation of the same Madame Bovary novel is a better movie even though Ketan Mehta ruined it with a weird/ambiguous ending.

Mia Wasikowska looked plain in many scenes and seemed passionless – almost life less. Henry Lloyd-Hughes was good as the husband. Rhys Ifans was very good as the merchant. The rest of the cast was ok.
