Ghanchakkar Ghanchakkar

When Sanju (Emraan Hashmi), a suave, master safe cracker wants to retire from a career in crime, he decides to team up with two dangerous criminals to commit one last heist. A bank robbery that will ensure that he never has to worry about money again! Everything goes according to plan. Sanju is given the task of hiding the money till things cool down and the booty can be split. Two months later the associates return to collect their share of the loot, but Sanju refuses to even recognize them! What dangerous game is Sanju playing? Ghanchakkar is a crazy, quirky rollercoaster suspense ride that will surprise, shock and entertain the audience at every turn.

Movie had a interesting premise and it was engrossing for a while but it lost its way. It dragged a lot in the second half and the scenes became repetitive. Was able to correctly guess where the money was pretty early on. Could not believe how Sanju or his wife did not think about that. It had some subtle humor and is a dark comedy. The good thing about the movie was that one is not sure whether Sanju is really suffering from memory problems or if he is faking it and if Vidya’s character is good or lying right until the end. Did not like the unnecessary introduction of a new character at the end. Did not like the ending either.

Emraan was very good as Sanju. Vidya was good but her Punjabi accent came and went. They should have not made her character Punjabi. Rajesh Sharma was good and so was Namit Das.

nickoftime Nick of Time

Just off the train in Los Angeles, unassuming accountant Gene Watson (Johnny Depp) and his 6-year-old daughter (Courtney Chase) get drawn into a conspiracy to kill California’s governor (Marsha Mason). In the depot, Ms. Jones (Roma Maffia) snatches the girl while Mr. Smith (Christopher Walken) gives the dazed Watson a pistol and tells him that he has to kill the governor in order to save his kidnapped daughter.

The basic premise of the movie is quite ridiculous in that they have some amateur guy try to kill the governor when they could kill her themselves or have a hired hand kill her. Also Christopher Walken showing up everywhere made it seem ridiculous.

Had read that parts of Baadshah were copied from this. I have seen not Baadshah since I first saw in 1999 and I had completely forgot the second half. All I remembered was the comedy scenes from first half and the climax/ending copied from Rush Hour which I had watched before. The last 40 minutes of Baadshah (excluding ending) are copied scene to scene dialogue to dialogue from this movie. Actually Aamir/Cavite are also inspired/copied from this movie.

Vertigo – First Hitchcock movie to begin with and rightly so. Once you are adapted to fast paced thrillers it gets hard on you to sit through slow paced thrillers if there is nothing exciting happening in between and Vertigo is one such film that today’s generation may feel reluctant to try such movies with such pace.

Although it was slow like hell but, it still managed to catch me by surprise right before the interval because so many recent thrillers have been inspired from Vertigo’s plot and so many similarities lead to predictability in a suspense drama/thriller. I guess it is a “Classic Thriller” of its time and an inspiration for so many recent thrillers as well.

Crimson Tide – Had nothing in it to be considered as Thriller but Denzel and Gene’s stunning performances, their arguments/conversations & coup, within a confined Submarine will keep engrossed right till the end. Thanks Sinji/Scholes/Rooney/Hithere for recommendations. Highly Recommended!!!

Runaway Jury – Liked it very much from the beginning till the end and also liked the way screenplay, dialogues and suspense handled with pure simplicity. Thanks Sputnik for the recommendation. Liked John Cusack and Rachel Wiez, infact she was excellent. Gene again was excellent. Recommended!!!

The Chambers –A young man fresh out of law school tries to win a reprieve for his racist grandfather who is on death row – IMDB“. Liked the movie but last 15 minutes were really depressive. It is slow paced and rightly so as it is carried in a very realistic approach. Thanks Sputnik for recommendation.

Eyes Wide Shut – “A New York City doctor, who is married to an art curator, pushes himself on a harrowing and dangerous night-long odyssey of sexual and moral discovery after his wife admits that she once almost cheated on him. – IMDB“. Wanted to watch this movie specially for Nichole Kidman and like the movie as well. The scene where Nichole confesses about her sexual fantasy with a man who just saw her for a sec is one of the highlight of the movie. She was just Outstanding in the scene. Didn’t like Tom Cruise that much and may be because of the type of character he portrayed.

Please check out the music of the movie by Hans Zimmer. It was nominated or won an OScar. I still listen to it on big days of my life… for motivation and that feeling…

    Partly-Agree on FUKREY.

    Saw Tukaram (the 2012 film).

Liked the aspects of how his personality goes sea of change during the lifetime – from a “Saokaar”(pawn-broker) to a major poet (kabir of western and south India) and element in social reforms apart from being a devotee of “Panduranga”(local form of Vishnu in Maharashtra/Karnataka region).

Loved his debates with Brahmins about blind faiths / commercialization and ‘dalali’ of religion and castism etc and references to Kabir as one of his inspiration. His meet with Shivaji in second half is also very nice.

Yes, this is more “practical” Tukaram than the previous film on him..but somewhere felt that the devotional part was bit lackluster . This is more about how world say Tukram grow as great saint / poet – rather than how Tukaram sees the world of Panduranga/Vitthala[1]. The music should have been better for his “abhangas” (poems). One doesn’t quite feel the divine in the songs here

    But overall its good storytelling.

    Footnote
1* – felt like this is where Forrest Gump differs from many Indian regional films on great personalities / historical figures – we see the world (in film) through Forrest’s mind/eyes rather than world seeing how Forrest grew up.

  7. Anjanpur685Miles 11 years ago

This feels like talking to myself but I could not resist this 🙂

I know this is not a music / songs thread but still ..

I am not much fond of Lata. But I love these “Abhang” in her voice written by Tuka (Tukaram). The english translation is bit amateurish – (a hell lot of it is lost in translation here) but one can get the Kabir in here… if one is aware of Kabir’s work/fan of his work.

Lata has sung these very nicely.

Titanic – discussion on LA Confidential inspired me to revisit the Titanic one again.

Little Children – 20 yr old Rose (Kate) of Titanic inspired me to watch 30-35yr old Sarah (Kate) of ‘little children’ assuring me tht her acting skill is as good as her seducing skills. She looked beautiful & film was very interesting, engaging & completely different frm regular brunch.

Aurangzeb – this movie is like, you have something good in your plate but still u r missing a lot of things. Liked Rishi kapoor, he was brilliant n arjun kapoor had mixed performance. Some times he was terrific n sometimes totally out of the place or was it direction n editing?

Olympus has fallen – if u have watched Die Hard 1, thn no need to watch this. Die hard was 100times better than this in every scene, act, performance & plot. It has such a ridiculous plot & execution tht it becomes impossible 4u to digest.

just back from lootera. to be avoided at all costs. its a crushing bore. wanted to walk out within 20 mins of the film but sat through mostly bcos a really hot chick was sitting right next to me,wearing really short shorts 😉 its the kind of film that gives bad name to art films.

Reading “Immortals of Meluha” – and please I dont want this to be a Karan Johar / Hrithik film (Author had told this 2 months back). No way Hrithik can look like a Naga/Tibetian.

The Berlin File – It’s a Korean movie and anyone who has watched Bourne series will once again fall in love with this movie again. Unlike Bourne series, the power equation between the Protagonist and Antagonist in Berlin File is maintained equally. Fight Scenes are exceptionally brilliant and the story is kept very tight in a fast paced thriller. Highly Recommended!!!

42 – Since it is based on true story, certain things have to be accepted which seems implausible but apart from few minor mistakes/cinematic leverage, the movie is very good. The actor seems to be inspired from Denzel Washington and liked his display of controlled emotions.

History of Violence – It was similar to Swordsmen but later was better. Whenever the hero comes onscreen, lotr’s background music is played at the background. It was a timepass movie.

Watched Ghanchakkar- What a fine film. A fantastic Thriller with a layer of Dark comedy. Emraan Hashmi delivers his career best performance. Vidya balan is fantastic too. I will not recommend this to anyone who has expectations of a light comedy movie with predictable cliched moments. Its an unconventional film with a dark side to it. The climax is kind of disappointing but still very watchable. Easily Emraan’s best film till date and he owns the show this time.

Not everyone’s cup of tea but a fantastic watch.

Lootera A visiting archaeologist Varun Shrivastav comes to the village of Manikpur in West Bengal to excavate the temple grounds of the local Zamindar. Varun greatly impresses Pakhi, the Zamindar’s feisty and only daughter, who finds herself irrevocably drawn towards him. But Varun isn’t all he seems on the surface and he is forced to choose between her and his past.

Did not like the movie. I know this is supposed to be an adaptation of O Henry’s The Last Leaf but it felt like reverse engineering or like it was written backwards. The whole last leaf thing came out too pretentious and forced. And if you just play a 1950s song in the background it is 1950s? I am not sure if woman from some small town would lead the guy on and come to his room at night and sleep with him in the 50s. The whole Police chasing Ranveer track looked like a serious version of the Saurabh Shukla – Ranbir track from Barfi. The 1950s cops being so concerned about catching Ranveer’s character itself looked a bit too much to me.

Ranveer was ok. He tried to be soft spoken and all but I did not get the feel that he was from the 50s especially in the 2nd half. Sonakshi acted well in some scenes but don’t know why they had to make her sick from the beginning itself. She looked older than Ranveer. Adil Hussain was ok.

    • Baba 11 years ago

good review. i felt the same about ranveer. he was trying to be soft spoken as if the director has warned him not to go even one pitch higher than that. sonakshi was ok. how long can you watch a scene with two below avg actors doing nothing in 1950s get up. i am so bored.wanted to walk out after 20 mins.

Benny and Joon Benny is the overprotective caretaker of his mentally ill but artistically talented sister, Joon. When the eccentric Sam, who looks and acts like a silent-movie comedian, falls for Joon, the siblings’ frail bond is put to the test.

Liked the movie. Found it entertaining though parts of it seemed unrealistic. Johnny Depp was excellent as Sam. Mary Stuart Masterson was good as the mentally ill Joon. Aidan Quinn was good as the caring brother Benny. Julianne Moore was ok.

Someone had posted a scene that was copied in Barfi and mentioned that Ranbir and Priyanka’s characters were inspired from the movie and found out its true.

    ——————–

Confessions of a Dangerous Mind Trash-TV maven Chuck Barris has it all — the hit series “The Gong Show” and the love of a good woman. But he also has a big, dark secret: He’s a CIA assassin who kills while purportedly escorting his game show winners on their vacation prizes.

Its based on the memoir of popular game show host and producer Chuck Barris, who claimed to have also been an assassin for the CIA. The film is directed by George Clooney.

Weird movie. It had an interesting plot and some dark humor but after a point it became plain boring.

Sam Rockwell was very good as Chuck Barris. Drew Barrymore was good. George Clooney and Julia Roberts were ok. Brad Pitt and Matt Damon make blink and miss cameos.

Sunset Boulevard – directed by Gulzar and starring Nadira and Om Puri.

    Liked it very much.

Btw, in first part Nadira – who is so particular about Urdu pronunciation in the film (she pulls leg of Om puri on how he says Khuda and all) – says “Avlida” instead of “Alvida” at 21:30 in first half. Is that a colloquial or the word is accepted in Urdu?

The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas When his family moves to Poland, young Bruno befriends Shmuel, a boy who lives on the other side of the fence, where everyone seems to be wearing striped pajamas. Unaware of Shmuel’s fate as a Jewish prisoner, Bruno embarks on a dangerous journey.

The movie looked partly inspired from Life is Beautiful in that the kids are naive or innocent and how some people do not know what is going around. But somehow the movie came across too contrived as parts of it seemed too implausible and incredulous. There are no guards around the fence and the kid can just bring a shovel and plow across into the camp. Why can the Jewish prisoners not do the same? The ending was a bit too much. Liked the part of the kid and mother’s interaction with Pavel, a Jewish prisoner.

Performances by Vera Farmiga, David Thewlis, Rupert Friend were good. David Heyman was good as Pavel. The kids Asa Butterfield (Hugo) and Jack Scanlon were good.

I would like to know one thing.

    @Sputnik or all

Is this only show off of for how many many movies you see? Has there been an exchange of opinions on the films / opinions?

    Well I doubt so …

Why not better have these as separate posts?

Anyone can have different opinions on International films etc …how about well known regional films thread??

    • Author
      sputnik 11 years ago

No its not a show off. I have watched some very good movies based on recommendations of others and others have also watched movies based on mine or someone else’s recommendations and there has been some exchange of opinions too. The thing with recommendations is that someone might recommend a movie and the other person may only be able to watch it the next month or even later.

I already said the regional films thread is a great idea but I have not seen any regional films recently. The problem is its harder to find Regional Movies with English subtitles. If you can write up a post with some regional movies then I will post it for you and we can use that as a regional films thread.

    • Baba 11 years ago

i see a good point here.thing is most of the mini reviews on this thread are just opinions. I liked this, i disliked this etc. there is no attempt to launch a debate by raising an point which is interesting or which one would want to discuss with others.

      • Author
        sputnik 11 years ago

hmm but two or more people need to watch the movie for there to be any debate. Last month there was good discussion/debate on YJHD and Raanjhana and also people did check out some movies based on recommendations.

Movies You Watched This Month – June 2013

You are the expert at launching a debate by raising a point which is interesting or which one would want to discuss with others 🙂

Ok let me try now. The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas was intended as how bad Nazis were and how they were indulging in propaganda but it had the opposite effect. The movie looked like Jewish propaganda. Now lets see if anyone else watches the movie and agrees/disagrees with me.

    Bhaag Milkha Bhaag

    Bhaaga Milkha, Jeeta Farhan!

Having gone to the theatres with tremendous expectations and also lamenting the fact that I would’ve to sit through a 3-hour movie, I was filled up with mixed emotions before entering the cinema hall.

Taking off from arguably the Most Famous Incident/Defeat of Milkha Singh’s atheletic career (400m Finals at the Rome Olympics, 1960), Bhaag Milkha Bhaag is an absolute vivid, emotional and engaging take on the “Flying Sikh’s” life’s and times headed by the supreme force of Farhan Akhtar potraying him.

Even at a long 3-hour running length, I seldom felt there were hardly any moments and sequences as such where I was totally bored or not involved in the proceedings.
Yes, a bit of totally unwanted sequences could have been trimmed out (like the one outside the police station where Milkha does 100 pushup’s). Also, both the Sonam Kapoor track and the Rebecca Breeds track in Melbourne did not add significant much in my opinion.
But such minor glitches were overcomed by the acting of the entire cast, the ripping Background Score, Excellent Cinematography and some Heart-Wrenching sequences( *I seriously do believe BOLLYWOOD has improved by leaps and bounds when it comes to Camera Work, BG Score and picking up a Good Supporting Cast).

I liked the Army Portions a lot but the one that takes the cake is Milkha’s Childhood portions with the young Jabtej Singh potraying him as a carefree yet “Family-Loving” kid.
Be it at his gaon or in Delhi Camp’s after partition or the entire sequence involving the murder of his parents and him discovering the death of his mother was quite impactful (Though overuse of CGI effects was a mistake) yet horrible (I would go on to compare it with Holocaust Era).
Also worthy were the scenes at the Refugee Camp in Delhi and Young Milkha discovering his sister’s abuse.

Zinda was a treat to hear to on the big screen. Totally livened up the entire cinema hall.
Liked the O Rangrezz Ghazal(which kindoff reminded me of Phir Le Aya Dil from Barfi!).
Rest songs were okay (Slow-Motion Angreza can get addictive after watching the movie though).

Prasoon Joshi has delivered one of the best Stories here on a rarely made biopic in Bollywood. Though the screenplay could have been improved but he deserves applause.
Dialogues were good and not unnecessarily/overtly- Jingoistic (except at some places), Cheesy or Punchline types.

Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra’s Direction was good but could have been better. He handles the ‘Milkha Singh’ portions well as him being the central protaginist of the movie but fails to do justice to many of the other plotlines in the story.
But full marks to him for creating and treating us to that 40-minutes of Milkha’s childhood which only makes the movie more powerful and impactive.

Sonam Kapoor is hardly there but I’ve been noticing play her such Indian-ised roles quite a lot as opposed to her ‘Couture/Magazine Covers’ Image.
Prakash Raj induced some good laughs and it was a delight to see him onscreen in an avatar where he is not threatening the lead by showing-off his connections/political power instead making him do sit-up’s.
The ‘always-so reliable’, Pawan Malhotra was superb as Milkha’s Coach.
Divya Dutta was good but a little tooooo much OTT at times.
Yograj Singh was looking kindoff stiff/camera concius in the beginning but eased into his role gradually.
Art Malik was simply superb as Milkha’s Father.
Dalip Tahil was looking uneasy as Jawaharlal nehru and had nothing much to do.
Meesha Shafi looked gorgeous in her 2-3 scenes.

Jabtej Singh deserves a standing ovation for perfectly potraying the Young Milkha Singh.

But now, as you’ll know it is FARHAN AKHTAR who totally steals the show.
Be it the young, first-time in love munda, or as the jawaan who’ll run that extra mile for a glass of milk (akin to Paan Singh Tomar who is rumoured to be Milkha Singh’s real-life junior) to the gawky-eyed runner enamoured by the Indian-Logo Blazer or as the disciplined army personnel in “God-Awesome” Aviators or as the dedicated, super-trained athelete, Farhan lives and breathes the role.
One moment that stayed with me was him returning back to his village post-partition and breaking down… What an Awesome Scene that was (More awesome that Milkha slapping himself for losing focus at the Melbourne Olympics).

Bhaag Milkha Bhaag is a very good film with glitches and mis-steps but for its intention to bring about Milkha’s eventful life onscreen and Farhan’s Awestrucking performance, it totally deserves a watch on the big-screen and hope it reaches a Grand Success at the Box-office too.

    RATING: 3.5/5

    • Serenzy 11 years ago

ps: Had rated ‘Paan Singh Tomar’ too the same but I would definitely say BMB is the better movie (it also has more of the sports, dedication and hard-work factors looked upon as PST changes tracks to Dacoit-giri in the 2nd half) but cannot be re-watched with the same amount of interest for sure.

      – Performance/Acting-level wise both Irrfan as PST and Farhan Akhtar as Milkha Singh have done a fabulous job.

      – Audience Reaction in the theatre was Excellent as far as I gauged it and all my friends liked/loved it.

      • Serenzy 11 years ago

If Milkha Singh really had that little bit of *ding-dong* at the age of 21 at the Melbourne Olympics that too with an Ozzie Chick, I’m the Most Envious/Jealous Person in the World right now!!!!
        😀 😉

Ironicaly, haven’t ‘liked’ even a SINGLE Rakesh Omprakash Mehra Movie till date with Rang De Basanti(2.5/5) being the Best out of his Average Affairs.

A kind-off hatsoff to Farhan Akhtar for a Brilliant Onscreen Potrayal of the Athelete.. Immersed himself totally into the role.
Rock On!!!, Luck by Chance, ZNMD and now this… Tremendous Improvement! *applause*

Shows that he’ll embrace acting more now and not direct much(having given a DCH, Lakshya – which I did not like much on 1st watch and a good enough Don2).

I also liked his voice in Rock ON!!!

just saw BMB. its not a sports films. its a biopic of milkha but somewhat concocted. a linear narration would have worked better here. some episodes in the film about his aussie gf, sonams part and his reason for not winning some races seem fantasy of milkha.a far easier and honest thing would have been to show he lost it genuiely bcos someone else was good.training scenes are not good.too many slo-mo moments. farhans acting is avg. direction is a bit confused.ROM is not sure if he wants to make a biopic or a masala film or a sports film.divya dutta hardly has any role.

    • Baba 11 years ago

which is a bigger ahcivement -losing in olympics by some secs
or defeating a pakistani who dont hv any std in atheletics? almost the entire film is focussed on his race with a paki

also there are numerous attempts in the film to project milkha as the “hot dude” jispe har ladki mar mit ti hai pehli nazar mein.i think milkha met some aussie girl there, she may hv said hi-hello once and he projected this incident as if she was his full time gf and a reason why he lost an important race.the joke is on the audience

a review of bmb that nails it

    https://www.twitlonger.com/show/n_1rlbo0f

    • mate 11 years ago

Totally agree with the review that Baba mentioned. There is no doubt about that Milkha Singh had proper involvement in the narration of the story. And as the critic said in the above mentioned review, every time he lost, he had some kind of excuse as If he wanted to get sympathy of people but whose? I mean who cares whether he comes first or fourth. No doubt you are a public figure, a lot of people might worship you, but then there are lot of things that are much more essential to be described in a biopic. And as Baba said It would be better to take a linear aspect of his life that is his true identity and it would be much more impactful. As far as Farhan performance is concerned, it is very ordinary and after watching this performance I’m totally persuaded by the saying that actors can’t be created they are always self-made, Farhan might put his body and soul into the character, but he couldn’t be able to convert his below average acting abilities to something extra-ordinary. According to me, It’s a golden opportunity gone wasted by the director and the casting director who signed a mediocre talent like Farhan for this role.

saw pursuit of happyness in three sittings due to lack of time.will smith is briliiant. very touching in many scenes.the film is not on entereprenuership or any selling skills but about his struggle.he sees the worst and comes out of it. that is the inspirational part of it

Blow 2001 – Based on true story of one of the drug lord who lost his fortunes 3 times serving imprisonment up till 2015 is one of the better movies in which Jonny Depp has given an excellent performance. However, the movie could have been edited better to make it tight and gripping. Recommended!!!

Sleepers 1996 – First half was dragged like anything but it was done to acquaint the audience with the characters, the background and atmosphere of the town the characters lived in. Since it is based on the novel which claims to be inspired from real events, the second half was much better and engrossing.

Superbad 2007 – It was too much for me to digest, too much of gross and verbal porn at display, not many scenes where you ROFL and many scenes were just OTT. Supposed to be a comedy flick but it looked to me as some wannabe movie. I think “Closer” was much better with cast aging more than 30yrs delivering porn dialogues.

Children of Men 2006 – A good film with good cinematography. Liked the way the film was executed even though the film is all about 2027 and the infertilities of women.

Haeundae 2009 – Well, this is one of those film that I don’t recommend, please avoid it.

Shiri – Excellent thriller that has excellent actors or superstars, one of the “oldboy”, &“I saw devil” fame and the other of “the berlin file” fame, both terrific actors. Loved everything about the film and its pace which makes it a must watch movie. Recommended!!!

G I Joe Retaliation – One of the dumbest action movie ever made, it is a nothing but pathetic piece of shit. Only good thing you get to see is the photography of icy mountains that off-course you already have seen millionth time on Discovery/National Geographic channels. This shit is even shittier than Dabangg2. I got head ache post interval and decided to stop then and there. In one seen where the world leaders meet, they projected nuclear arsenal launch as if the leaders were playing a video game, launch and then self-destruct.

PS: Have seen another 10 B/W movies, few Thrillers and few Charlie Chaplin’s. Planning to make a separate thread/post whenever time permits as each movie is classic in its own way. Also planning to watch more of 1940’s – 1980’s classical movies and include better films that cater to all ages and modern times in the same thread.

Does Blow have some weird dream like scenes? If it is then I remember trying to watch that movie a few years back but not liking it. So did not complete it.

Had watched Sleepers a few years back and liked it. Yeah I think the first half was slow paced too.

Had watched Superbad when it came out on DVD and liked it. Its more of a teen comedy. Closer is completely different to this. I don’t know why you are comparing these movies.

      • FS 11 years ago

There was no dream kind of stuff in Blow. It’s based on true story of George Jung who established the Cocaine Market in America in 1970’s and in one scene it states that the drugs one finds on American Land, chances are that 85% came from this man. It is a nice flick and it also shows his real picture at the end of the film.

Superbad is a teen comedy flick but it uses a ,lot of verbal porn references and it won’t make you laugh apart from making it look like too gross but where as in Closer, conversation that takes place between clive owen & julia roberts, clive owen and natalie portman are of same verbal porn in nature but it is digestible.

Sorry I confused Blow with another Johnny Depp movie Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas because that also had drugs. Will check out Blow when I get a chance.

Closer was more a serious movie about relationships whereas Superbad was just a teen comedy with cops doing something that they normally do not. Most teen comedies have gross/vulgar humor.

          • FS 11 years ago

“Most teen comedies have gross/vulgar humor.”
—yeah but those brings out laugh, isn’t it for example american pie series but instead all it had was vulgar conversations that were sour and the Police stuff looked OTT.

True Romance Clarence marries hooker Alabama, steals cocaine from her pimp, and tries to sell it in Hollywood, while the owners of the coke try to reclaim it.

Its written by Quentin Tarantino so it has all his trademark stuff – pop conversations about Elvis, Kung Fu Triple Feature, Comic books, good dialogues, violence and all but it did not gel with Tony Scott’s direction. It looked like a B movie and it also looked dated.

It seemed like the characters had no depth and many of them were special appearances. Background music by Hans Zimmer was bad – it looked like he came up with one bad tune and just decided to keep playing it over and over. Patricia Arquette’s face gets punched and smashed to pulp and in the next scene she has hardly any bruises. Same with Christian Slater’s face after his fight with Drexl. There are some weird scenes of the ghost of Elvis talking to Christian Slater.

Delhi Belly’s ending scene is inspired/copied from the final scene of the movie.

Christian Slater and Patricia Arquette were ok. I did not even recognize that Drexl was Gary Oldman. He was excellent in a small part. Dennis Hopper was good specially in the scene with Christopher Walken who was his usual threatening self. Christopher Walken is there in just one scene. Brad Pitt has a small cameo of a stoner. James Gandolfini was good. Chris Penn was ok. Sameul Jackson is in a blink and you miss scene.

    • FS 11 years ago

I didn’t like first 15-20 mins of the movie and it took me two attempts to start off after rex insisted on watching it. however i end up liking it and second half was really good. it might not be a well executed movie but definitely it was entertaining especially second half.

Well, here are some of the Must watch movies if you haven’t seen them yet. You don’t have to bother whether they are white and black or very old movies, the moment you press the play button you will be glued unto it till the end. Highly Recommended Movies.

Old / Black and White Classics

The Day Of the Jackals 1973 – 5/5
    Modern times 1936 – 5/5
    M 1931 – 5/5
    Double Indemnity 1944 – 5/5
    The Gold Rush 1925 – 5/5
    Chinatown – 1974 – 4.5/5
    North By Northwest 1959 – 3.5/5

    Recent Flicks

    Tropa De Elite 2007 – 5/5
    Elite Squad 2 Enemy Within 2010 – 5/5
    New World 2013 – 4.5/5
    Cloverfields – 3/5

PS: Most of the above movies are recommended by Nirjhar and it will be great to see him on TQ someday.

The Day Of the Jackal has been on my watch list for a long time but had not watched it because of it being a 1973 movie but will watch it soon.

Had watched North By Northwest many years back and liked it back then.

Watched Chinatown recently and had commented about it.

“The movie has this whole noir atmosphere going for it and its very good till a major part of it but two things ruined the movie at least for me. There is a twist in the movie which while bold and unexpected dilutes the whole movie. I think the movie should have been about the water thing only. I don’t have a problem with tragic endings but the ending was pathetic and stupid.”

Movies You Watched This Month – January 2013

On True Romance I think the movie would have been better if Quentin Tarantino had directed it himself. Read on IMDB that there is a Tarantino version too which has his trademark non linear screenplay and a tragic ending.

And on Superbad the Police stuff is supposed to be funny because cops normally would not do that stuff.

P.S Yes it would be great to see him here. I do not know Nirjhar’s contact or I would have invited him personally. You can invite him on my behalf or if you know his contact you can email me.

    @FS :

Of Old Classics, few are outdated one’s but one can Watch it to get sense of filmaking of those times..

Chinatown is Classic… Pure Gem as it stars another Gem : Jack Nicholson.

North by NW is good and that last long sphinx scene. only one movie ever to shoot there, I presume. Hitchcock movie.

Day of Jackal : I will advise, Which I hate but better is to read Book of Fodrick Forseyth… Its Partly Fiction and reality as happend French President De Guelle when hitman was purchased to Kill him… NOVEL is sheer brilliant..

Rest are good but very dated…If one now doesnt like Citizen Kane thn they are much more dated than that movie, I love CK.

    • FS 11 years ago

Tulmul – I was actually surprised when I saw these movies. I never expected to enjoy the movies nor complete the movies let alone liking but to my surprise I loved all the above movies as the order. I was very sleepy but couldn’t sleep, so I needed some dose such as old classical songs or old movies. I chose movie and it was The Day of the Jackal. I was so dizzy and sleepy in the beginning and by the end of the film I was totally fresh lol. I don’t thing any movie has shown so much of in detail yet without slowing down on pace. It is one of the best thrillers I have seen till date.

When i watched Vertigo it was totally a different case, totally slow paced movie.

North by northwest – Yes the ending scene was good but to its time and I didn’t like few things in between as well hence I gave it 3.5 ranking. I gave 5/5 because I loved those movies the way I loved 12 angry men. Flawless.

I don’t read much tulmul, never felt so but I envy those who finish novels like in 3-4 days and keep them reading on and on.

  34. FS 11 years ago

Shaolin 2011 – Good movie that teaches you Shaolin principles and enlightenment towards righteousness. Have seen many movies in the past of such subject still this movie had something new.

  35. Serenzy 11 years ago

If there was an award being given out for – The BEST “WTF” Climax, I would hand it over to EK THI DAAYAN, *hands down*

A Non-Engaging and a Confused attempt by the makers not sure whether to make it classy/logical OR go the massy Bhatt/Ramsay way.
End’s up being a mediocre movie at best.

Loved the YAARAM Song quite a lot though(One of the better songs of the year and a nice deviation for Sunidhi Chahuan’s singing talent).

The Bobo’s Childhood Sequences in the 1st half were the best thing about this movie which was totally devoid of any superior chills/thrills, I was expecting.
No gothic/dark terror that the trailers had promised, EDT remains a futile attempt and a well-deserved lossmaker for Balaji at a Lifetime Nett of 30 crores.

Konkona Sen Sharma was very good among the entire cast. Vishesh Tiwari as the young Bobo has done a nice job.

Emraan Haashmi and Kalki had nothing much to do at all really and Huma Qureshi looks HOT and appeals to my ‘manhood’ 😀

    RATING: 2/5

The Devil’s Double Dominic Cooper stars as Uday Hussein — Saddam Hussein’s depraved, decadent elder son — and as Latif Yahia, the army lieutenant forcibly drafted to be his body double, in this drama based on Yahia’s autobiographical novel.

While the movie poster says Based on a True story, Latif’s claims have been dismissed as farfetched and there is no proof that Uday used body doubles and that he was a body double for him. In fact Latif is supposed to have been arrested for posing as Uday.

While the character of Uday looked like it was based on the real Uday and him killing the guy at the party is based on him killing Saddam’s valet and food taster, the body double part and his fleeing with that girl turned it into a Bollywood masala movie. And may be that’s why it did not shock or offend as much as it should have. The movie also has an unintentional effect of making Saddam look good 🙂

Dominic Cooper was excellent as both Uday and Latif. After watching some videos of Uday on youtube it looks like he was psycho but not in the way he was portrayed though. He seems to be subtle. Ludivine Sagnier was ok.

Here is a good article on Latif for those who are interested.

Watched the terminal .liked it a lot.feel good movie with as usual brilliant performance from tom hanks.

    • FS 11 years ago

The Terminal is one of the best film I ever watched. His performance was so delicate & subtle yet it had big impact on the audience.

Rescue Dawn – Had seen it before but not from the beginning. Very good performance from Christian bale and his friend.

Mother – Korean movie about a mother and her son (little immature) who is framed against false charges of killing a teen age girl. Mother desperately searches the real killer in order to prove her son’s innocence with the help of her son’s friend. The film is slow but the twist in the end ultimately pays off… The mother’s son is “Bin Won” – remember ‘the man from nowhere”? He is just brilliant and you won’t recognize him as “Bin Won” or the man from nowhere fame unless you have read about him featuring in the film.

Oblivion – I really liked the movie and the CGI used is exceptionally brilliant. Most of the film you will be watching only two people i.e, Tom Cruise and his partner yet it keeps you engrossed. Liked Tom Cruise and there is very small role of morgan freeman.

13 Assassins – Didn’t like it though concept was good and first half had dark and violent theme but second half fight was of “b grade”.

Shoot out at Wadala – Shown as inspired from real life story but was way short of reality. John abraham managed to look his worst and give his worst performance, tushar was good and the best of the lot was Sonu Sood. Ronit roy was better than Anil kapoor and though he had very short role he made his mark.

Poongsan 2011 – Korean movie – A man takes not more than 3 hours to cross into North Korea and bring people into South Korea is hired by South Korean Govt Agents to help cross a diplomats lover who is struck in NK into SK. He is betrayed abt payment but falls in love with the girl he help cross the border. Things change and he gets harassed, tortured & used by agents of both side with life of the girl he loves. Movie is good and is the same lead actor of “the Berlin file”.

Downfall (Der Untergang) This portrayal of Adolf Hitler’s final days is based on the memoirs of Traudl Junge, the young secretary who with him until his death. Holed up in a bunker in Berlin, Hitler spends his last days in chaos, vacillating between paranoia and defiance.

This is the movie which has the famous Hitler scene which has been parodied with different subtitles so many times for so many things like Sachin’s retirement and so on.

Good movie though a bit long. It was nominated for an Oscar for Best Foreign Language film. It humanizes Hitler and the Nazis that you almost feel sympathetic towards them. The scene where Magda Goebbels kills her daughters was very moving and chilling at the same time.

Bruno Ganz was absolutely brilliant as Hitler – calm/gentle one moment and completely paranoid/crazy/furious at another moment. Alexandra Maria Lara was pretty and acted well as the naive secretary. Juliane Köhler was ok – better than the last time I saw her in Nowhere in Africa. Performances were very good by the rest of the cast.

—- Completely agree. I loved it.

Use of his dialogues against Gangnam style parody is one of the best of its kind.

Watched “Lore” that shows how the family members of a Nazi soldier suffers in Germany after Hitler’s army is defeated and the journey of “lore” (elder daughter – now care taker of younger sister, two younger brothers and one infant) to one of her relatives who lives in Hamburg. Film was interesting for a while but it was stretched too long and when you think the movie pace will pick up again, it ends 😛

It also shows the effects & defeat of war on people of Germany.

Sabrina (1954) A playboy becomes interested in the daughter of his family’s chauffeur. But it’s his more serious brother who would be the better man for her.

Did not like the movie and could not even complete it. Got bored – may be movie is too old to like it now at least for me.

Yeh Dillagi is inspired from this movie. Had liked Yeh Dillagi back in 94 but not much when I saw it a couple of years back. Incidentally Hollywood also remade this movie with Harrison Ford a year after Yeh Dillagi in 1995.

Humphrey Bogart looked too old for the role. They did try to make Audrey Hepburn look bad initially and then she was charming as she usually is. William Holden was ok.

Man on the Moon Based on the life of the insanely inventive comedian Andy Kaufman, best known as lovable mechanic Latka Gravas on the 1970s sitcom “Taxi,” who shocked audiences with his caustic, off-the-wall routines.

Liked the movie but not everyone will like it. Parts of it are very enjoyable and parts of it are very weird but then the weird parts are based on what Andy Kauffman actually used to do. He used to wrestle with women and got punched by a wrestler on The David Letterman Show. He used to read the whole book The Great Gatsby in one of his comic performances.

Jim Carrey was excellent as Andy Kauffman. Danny DeVito was good as his manager. Courtney Love and Paul Giamatti were good too.

Saw Kungfu Panda 2 on my new 3D television. As most of us must have watched it, it is one of the best animated movie. Right from story, characterisation, animation to 3D effect is brilliant (though its predecessor is tad better). A definite 3.5/5 for me.

The dialogues in the climax (especially the last line by Emraan) are intelligent and howlarious 🙂
