Official Synopsis
The Girl on the Train is based on Paula Hawkins’ bestselling thriller that shocked the world. Rachel (Emily Blunt), devastated by her recent divorce, spends her daily commute fantasizing about the seemingly perfect couple who live in a house that her train passes every day. Everything changes when she sees something shocking happen there, and becomes entangled in the mystery that unfolds.

Liked it. Good movie but it had the potential to be an excellent movie. Its a bit long and does bore a bit. The twist at the end is good. The movie does remind of Gone Girl and there is some similarity with respect to the twist. Some scenes are excellent like the scene where Rachel goes to a alcoholics group or her scene with the psychiatrist Kamal Abdic. The best scene of the movie is the scene where Megan talks to Kamal about her child.

Emily Blunt was very good as always and nailed the part of the alcoholic Rachel. She was excellent in a couple of scenes. Haley Bennett looked very sexy and was very good as Megan. Rebecca Ferguson was good as Anna. Justin Theroux was good as Rachel’s ex-husband Tom. Luke Evans was good as Megan’s husband Scott. Allison Janney was ok as the Detective. Édgar Ramírez was good as the psychiatrist Kamal Abdic.

    Sairat
Watched the movie Sairat finally. The first half is excellent. The second half drags a lot and bores a bit but the ending is excellent. The love story in the first half felt so real and the songs were used very well in the movie. The second half is set in Hyderabad and it was nice to see many known locations in the movie.

Rinku Rajguru was excellent as Archi. Akash Thosar was excellent as Parshya. Tanaji Galgunde as Pradeep and Arbaz Shaikh as Salya were very good too. Suresh Vishwakarma was very good as Archi’s Father Tatya. Suraj Pawar was good as Prince.

Agreed . Here is my comment from August movie thread , “Sairat – Lovely movie . The main plot is very basic but its very well made . They have taken care of the tiniest details with utmost sincerity . The acting is very authentic , the leads look like 2 everyday teenage deeply in love . The song and their picturizations are gems .What big budgeted movies fail to do with thousands of crew, foreign location they did it perfectly with the first two songs .”

    Humsafar
Its is a Pakistani TV serial starting Fawad Khan and Mahira Khan. Its on Netflix here. So watched it but not in full. Missed many episodes in between.

The series started off with a story inspired from Hindi movies like Maine Pyar Kiya/HAHK to Ramayan. The good thing about the serial initially was that it did not have all the fake drama and overacting of present day Hindi serials. It felt underplayed and even the story progressed quite fast. But then it went downhill with an evil Saasu Maa and her evil plan. It dragged quite a lot at the end with the heroine not confronting the hero and just putting up with all the insults and accusations from her husband.

Fawad Khan was excellent as Ashar, the insecure husband not willing to listen to reason. Mahira Khan was excellent in a regressive role of a ideal wife/mother Khirad. Naveen Waqar was good as Sarah, Ashar’s cousin who is obsessively in love with her. Noor Hassan was irritating as Khizar who is in love with Sarah. Atiqa Odho was ok as the evil mother-in-law.

    Rustom
A naval officer (Akshay Kumar) goes on trial for the murder of his wife’s lover.

The movie is inspired/based on the Nanavati case but there are a lot of differences with that case. There is a whole navy and ship angle here. The movie’s tone is very similar to movies like OUTIM. The sets and art direction are gaudy and scream that they are from a period movie. There is lot of unintentional comedy.

Akshay Kumar was good but he is too sincere/earnest in the way he acts in movies like this. Ileana looked pretty but she had way too much make up on in every scene. Her acting was strictly ok. Esha Gupta was horrible overacting with her constant smirks. Pavan Malhotra was good as the investigating officer.

Well,Akhsay won national award for rustom 😛

      • Author
        sputnik 7 years ago

Yeah its ridiculous that he won a National Award for Rustom. But then the chairperson of the jury is Priyadarshan and I think that explains it.

        Here is his interview.

Why are people questioning Akshay’s win: Priyadarshan

Priyadarshan, the chairperson of the feature film section for the National Film Awards, says he does not understand why people are questioning his frequent collaborator Akshay Kumar’s best actor win today.

The filmmaker has collaborated with Akshay in films like “Hera Pheri”, “Garam Masala”, “Bhagam Bhaag”, “Bhool Bhulaiya”, “De Dana Dan” and “Khatta Meetha”.

Many in social media are attributing Akshay’s win to his close proximity to Priyadarshan.

But the director says last year Ramesh Sippy was head of the jury and none questioned his good friend Amitabh Bachchan’s best actor win, so why should he and Akshay be subjected to such allegations.

“I have heard of all that and I will answer it in a simple way. When Ramesh Sippy was jury head Amitabh Bachchan won.

When Prakash Jha was head of jury, Ajay Devgn won.

“So none questioned at that time. So why all these questions are cropping up today,” Priyadarshan told PTI.

The filmmaker also clarified that Akshay’s performance in “Rustom” and “Airlift” were considered by the jury during the selection process.

However, as only the name of one film could be mentioned, the list featured the courtroom drama “Rustom”, he said.

“Akshay was given the best actor on the basis of his performance in two films — ‘Airlift’ and ‘Rustom’. It was the jury’s decision. One performance was dramatic and one was realistic.

“But according to the rule book, only one film can be mentioned and ‘Rustom’ was mentioned in the list. But the award recognises his performance in both the movies.”

This year saw the dominance of regional cinema at the National Film Awards with Marathi film “Kasaav” winning best feature film, Surabhi CM getting best actress and Rajesh Mapuskar being named best director for Marathi movie “Ventilator”.

Bollywood films which managed to score are “Pink” (best film on social issues), Dhanak” (best children’s film) and “Neerja( best Hindi film).

Priyadarshan says regional films don’t chase after box office numbers and that is why they are true to their stories and also give social messages.

“While watching films we realised that a lot of Bollywood movies were themed around homosexuality. The movies are not really highlighting social problems. Whereas regional cinema are themed around fantastic social issues. They try to tell different stories. Even ‘Dangal’ doesn’t talk about social issues. It was a life story.

“Regional movies are not made with the aim to earn Rs 100 crore. They are made from the heart. We should promote films that reflect the Indian culture. Regional movies are doing a very good job of storytelling through social issues,” he says.

This interview is funnier than most Priyadarshan comedies . Absolutely ridiculous decisions . There were at least 5 performances better thank Akshay’s airlift performance . Rustom comes no where in contention . My favorites of last year were – Aamir,Amitabh,Salman,Shahid,Manoj . Liked Akshay,SSR and srk too . But not worthy of awards .

    Dear Zindagi
An unconventional thinker (Shah Rukh Khan) helps a budding cinematographer (Alia Bhatt) gain a new perspective on life.

Did not like it. The movie is too long and it bored quite a bit. The movie had no real back story to it. It needed a better reason for Kaira’s commitment issues. If the parents had divorced and she had to live with only one of them and as a result hated a parent I could understand but the reason for Kaira’s commitment issues was so ridiculous.

Alia Bhatt was good but her character was not. Shah Rukh was ok. He was pretty much being himself as he is in interviews. Kunal Kapoor was ok. Yashaswini Dayama was very good as Kaira’s friend Jackie.

Raees – Is a well made masala movie with an excellent flow till the end. Srk acted very well and so is nawazuddin. Mahira Khan looked so gorgeous in it. Recommended!!!

Dear Zindagi – It was slow and boring which had few good philosophies on everyday life, adopting those could be beneficial in real life.

Goblin – Another excellent & cheesy Korean Series.

Ae Dil Hai Mushkil – First half was damn interesting and that interesting part wrapped up along with Aishwarya’s character in the movie. After that i couldn’t watch the movie, it was so out of the way from the intended ending. Got to give credit for the songs. they were pleasant and addictive.

Udta Punjab – Wow man Wow. Just Wow. I am in awe with Alia’s incredible acting. She is miles ahead from any of her competitors including her seniors. Movie was damn interesting as well as niche. Highly Recommended!!!

Black MIrror Season 3 – Loved it. Each episode was different and unique. The game & horror episode was very twisted @sputnik. If you watch full you’ll know it. Hackshaw Ridge – There have been so many great war movies already made that its impossible to do something totally unique in this genre .Hackshaw Ridge is no exception .But it did the routine work near perfectly. The story is great, war scenes looked very realistic . Garfield was fantastic .If the competition was less like last year he might have win an Oscar .

Raees – I really wanted to like the movie . The movie had it’s moments . But unfortunately the end product is a mess . Its neither a full fledged commercial nor hard hitting gangster movie . Shahrukh and Nawaz acted well .

Watched Raees. Did not like it much. As you said its “neither a full fledged commercial nor hard hitting gangster movie”.

Raees’s character is obviously based on Abdul Latif. There was an opportunity for Shah Rukh to play a negative role without any excuses but the movie tried to turn him into a hero.

I think the movie lost the plot in the second half trying to show him as some kind of Robin Hood with him trying to build a housing community for the poor and supplying food for everyone during riots.

The movie had too many unnecessary fight scenes. Raees, a gangster, getting duped by Musa into smuggling RDX part was just not believable. Nawaz’s character’s decision at the end did not make sense with the kind of principled person he was shown to be.

Agree that Shah Rukh and Nawaz acted well. Mahira looked pretty and acted well too. Mohammed Zeeshan Ayyub was very good as usual. Its sad to see such a good actor in such sidekick roles.

Quantico Season 1 – Wanted to watch this series for a long time now but started only after Sonam raved about Priyanka on Koffee with Karan. Believe it or not, it was very very interesting. It Started off brilliantly and the way story unfolds episode by episode keeps you on the edge. The key factor was depicting parallel storyline of past and present simultaneously that is edited brilliantly which actually keeps you engrossed whenever you think its getting boring or repetitive. But since the episodes are too many, it ultimately turns you off and the last few episodes goes horribly wrong in all departments. I found it average only because few episodes were really good and whatever you see about the past are they only good things you’ll remember once you complete the series. I am still not sure to watch the season 2 after such a bad ending.

Priyanka was damn good but sometime she gets overshadowed by many others even though director tries everything to give her more screen time, more onscreen pampering, more frontline shots etc… since she is the face of the series. Watch it on your own time. There is nothing to hurry. But I do recommend since one of our Bollywood actor has played such an important role and as a lead in a foreign land.

  13. cr7 7 years ago

Lion – Movie started off really well . The Indian scenes are very well done . Acting is top notch by the kid as well as the supporting cast . The second half or the Australian part is underwhelming . Dev Patel ,Nicole Kidman tried but the narrative was so so . Few characters didn’t contribute anything and slowed the pace .Some of the Australian scenes combining with the childhood are good .

      sputnik 7 years ago

      Agree with you.

When I read the real story and watched the trailer I was expecting a great movie but the 2nd half was very underwhelming. I guess there is not much to show when the lead is searching using google earth. Not sure if it is true or made up but the girlfriend and elder brother drama seemed forced.

In the true story the kid tried to go back home using different trains but since they were all suburban trains ended up at Kolkata Railway station. I think scenes like that would have added to the drama.

Sunny Pawar was excellent as Saroo aka Sheru. Abhishek Bharate was good as Guddu the brother. Dev Patel was very good but many of his scenes seemed unnecessarily dramatic. Rooney Mara was good but the drama with her character seemed forced. Nicole Kidman was ok.

6-5=2 – Watched the hindi version after hearing a lot of good reviews from friends but regretted not watching Kannada as i didn’t like a thing about the movie. it didn’t even look a bit from the real incident occurred as “supposedly”. Won’t recommend.

Suicide Squad – Everything was going right until last 40 mins or so. The preclimax and post climax is horrible.

Sully – This movie could have been much more engaging & thrilling than it is but nevertheless, well made and all thanks to Tom Hanks. Recommended!!!

Jack Reacher Never Go Back – Another Tom Cruise’s hollywood masala movie, entertaining.

  15. FS 7 years ago

Hacksaw Ridge – Absolutely agree with @Cr7 on this movie. I liked the movie, it was noting special but a great watch.

  17. cr7 7 years ago

Kubo and the two strings- Liked it . But the movie peaked somewhere in the middle and got underwhelming towards the end . As a result failed to make the desired impact . The journey part with Kubo, beetle,, monkey was endearing . Visuals look great .

Watched Planet Earth Season 1 in parts and it was excellent.

Watched Human Planet in parts and it was excellent too. Some of the things that humans were doing to earn livelihood or go to school was so inspiring.

Watched Tiger: Spy in the jungle. Another excellent show on a tigress and her 4 cubs.

  19. FS 7 years ago

Jolly LLB – The movie didnt had much to offer neither the star cast nor the director yet the star cast managed to influence the movie for a while until all hell loose broke the post interval.

Anu kapoor was absolutely brilliant just like a theatrical act, Akshay was good too but i think he is becoming repetitive & limiting his act & charisma (in order to get into the shoes of the character yet he couldn’t stop himself from doing certain stuff that are unrealistic unfit for the character) & The Judge was a Overacting Galore, completely burlesquing the role of a Judge for a one or two laughs.

Not sure why they had an actress in it, nor his father whose expressions were so rock steady & consistent that you can’t make out whether he is pissed or peed or happy or sad.

Inspector singh’s performance is also repetitive like in MS Dhoni or Sultan. Same expressions.

Overall its a timepass movie or an avg affair with a happy ending. ⭐️⭐️✨

    The Past
The Past is a 2013 French–Italian–Iranian drama film, written and directed by Iranian director Asghar Farhadi and starring Bérénice Bejo, Tahar Rahim and Ali Mosaffa.

Liked it. Good movie. Its in similar vein to Asghar Farhadi’s earlier movies like About Elly and A Separation but this one is a bit slow paced and at times a little too complex with all the characters involved. Asghar Farhadi is a master when it comes to movies like this. His movies have characters lying/hiding some things which are revealed layer by layer and always involve some tragic incident.

Bérénice Bejo was excellent as Marie. Tahar Rahim was good as Samir. Ali Mosaffa was very good as Ahmad. Pauline Burlet was very good as Lucie. Elyes Aguis was excellent as Fouad and Jeanne Jestin was good as Lea.

    Moonlight
At once a vital portrait of contemporary African American life and an intensely personal and poetic meditation on identity, family, friendship, and love, MOONLIGHT is a groundbreaking piece of cinema that reverberates with deep compassion and universal truths. Anchored by extraordinary performances from a tremendous ensemble cast, Barry Jenkins’s staggering, singular vision is profoundly moving in its portrayal of the moments, people, and unknowable forces that shape our lives and make us who we are.

Liked it. Very good movie. The movie is about Chiron, a kid who gets bullied in school and who grows up into a drug dealer, and his relationship with Kevin and coming to terms with being gay. The movie shows how bad life is for an African American kid with a crackhead mother and bullies in school.

Trevante Rhodes was very good as the adult CHiron. André Holland was good as the adult Kevin. Janelle Monáe was good as Teresa. Ashton Sanders was excellent as the teenager Kevin. I think he should have been nominated for an Oscar for Best Supporting Actor. Jharrel Jerome was good as the teenager Kevin. Naomie Harris was excellent as Chiron’s mother and deserves her Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actress. Mahershala Ali was good as Juan but I don’t think he deserves his Oscar nomination. His role was not that long nor that consequential.

The movie has been nominated for the following Oscars – Best Picture, Best Director, Best Supporting Actor – Mahershala Ali, Best Supporting Actress – Naomie Harris, Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Original Score, Best Cinematography and Best Film Editing.

The movie has a good chance of Best Picture, Best Director, Best Adapted Screenplay and Best Cinematography.

Kaabil – Everyone knows how versatile Hrithik is but his performance in Kaabil especially in the first half of the film is absolutely brilliant. I didnt mean he is bad or not good enough in the second half but every other aspect of filmmaking that complemented his act in the first half looses track overshadowing his performance. The movie could have been one of the finest movies of all time had they taken care of revenge aspect in an innovative way. Still the movie is very good and like-able. Highlight is the Hrithik and his incredible performance and beautiful Yami. ⭐️⭐️⭐️✨

Finally watched Kaabil and agree with you on Hrithik and the movie.

The first half was good and it could have been a very good movie if the revenge part was innovative but unfortunately it wasn’t. The revenge plan and the whole voice imitation part was silly at times. It felt like Hrithik just got lucky after getting thrashed each time.

Did not like the unnecessary songs popping up in the first half of the movie.

Hrithik was excellent as the blind husband out to take revenge. Yami Gautam looked gorgeous. Ronit Roy was excellent as the politician. Rohit Roy was good as the goon too. The rest of the cast was good too.

  26. cr7 7 years ago

Kahaani 2 – I feel really bad when a movie like this turns out average . It had everything going right till a point . Great cast, very relevant plot, suspense but then second half suddenly lost everything . Pales in comparison to the first part or what the movie could have been . But as a stand alone Hindi movie its not that bad .

  27. FS 7 years ago

La La Land – I don’t know what’s wrong with Oscar for chosing La La Jaan ki Lund over so many other better movies. I Just completed “Allied” and it is much much better than La La ki Lund. Most of the Oscar nominated movies are either good or above average. Very few movies that are selected by Oscar Jury turn up Classics. La La Land is a good film but it is just a good film nothing special or spectacular about the movie to be a front runner for the Oscar. Fuck You Oscar with La La Jaan Ki Lund.

Allied – Btw in Allied, Brad Pitt looks like Redford, they both look similar in their old age. The only lacking aspect of the film was I guess, there was no Sparkling Chemistry but a deep thoughtful admiration for each other which is very difficult to present it for the audience unless they fell it. Sairat, Sairat, Sari raat – Heard a lot about the movie and decided to watch. Fortunately the print was excellent, that’s what I thought so but It was not the print that was excellent, the whole cinematography was excellent and at par with some big budgeted movies. First half was ABSOLUTELY BRILLIANT, Real, engaging and most of us can relate and connect to it. Some of us may find playing those roles or those thoughts might have run in our heads. Some of us may think about the outcome of our thoughts as the movie proceeds into the second half. This movie is definitely an Oscar Worthy because if they can award “A Separation” an Oscar, then this definitely deserves to win in the foreign language category.

Now back to Second Half, the movie drags a bit, feels a bit boring but that’s what happens in real life i.e, you are seeing the real life of the common people. You will never feel it as a documentary yet so real unlike a movie. It is on par with a movie which I always recommend “Angadi Teru” that exposes the reality, Sairat is no different and it has one of the best endings you could ever watch. Highly Recommended!!!

    Manchester by the Sea
In Manchester by the Sea, the latest film from award-winning writer and director Kenneth Lonergan, the life of a solitary Boston janitor is transformed when he returns to his hometown to take care of his teenage nephew. The story of the Chandlers, a working-class family living in a Massachusetts fishing village for generations, Manchester by the Sea is a deeply poignant, unexpectedly funny exploration of the power of familial love, community, sacrifice and hope.

Excellent movie. Loved it. Best movie of the year. It is slow paced though so not everyone will like it. The tragedy from the flashback is so heartbreaking. While the movie has a tragic undertone it still is funny and has some black humor. The chemistry between the uncle and the nephew was great.

Casey Affleck was excellent as Lee and he deserves the Best Actor Oscar nomination that he has got. He has a good chance of winning the Oscar for Best Actor. Michelle Williams was excellent too specially in the scene where she apologizes to Lee. Kyle Chandler was good as the elder brother of Lee. Lucas Hedges was very good as the nephew and he has nominated for an Oscar for Best Supporting Actor.

The movie has been nominated for six Oscars – Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor, Best Supporting Actor, Best Supporting Actress and Best Original Screenplay. I think the movie has a good chance of winning in every category that it has been nominated for.

    Highly Recommended

Yes I saw your comment about it being best of the year but forgot to mention in my comment.

I think Moonlight is probably going to win Best Picture as it is about African American poverty and also about being gay. I liked that one too but I liked Manchester by the Sea more.

Casey Affleck should win but there was some sexual assault controversy about him and that could affect his winning the Best Actor award.

    I take back my words.

Watched La La Land and liked it. Its not the usual musical where every word is sung instead of spoken. This is more like Indian movies where there are songs in between. The movie is beautifully shot and some of the songs are very well choreographed. Loved the song “City of Stars,” and I think it will definitely win the Oscar for Best Original Song. I think the movie will win Best Original Score too. It has a good chance of winning the Oscar for Best Cinematography too.

Ryan Gosling was excellent and he danced well too. Emma Stone was excellent too but she looked weird in many scenes. Recently someone posted a picture of a cat with blonde wig imposed on it and saying its Emma Stone and since then Emma Stone reminds me of that.

The movie could win Best Picture too but I want Manchester by the Sea to win Best Picture.

My cousin Vinny -Read a post about how presenter misread the name and Marisa Tomei won best supporting actress for My cousin Vinny . Something similar happened yesterday so I decided to check the movie 😛 . The rumor could very well be true . She acted and looked cute . Did not know that there was a controversy over Marisa Tomei’s win but looks like it’s just a conspiracy theory.

Agree that there was nothing great about her performance but she did act well especially in the court scene where she talks about tires. Had posted that scene long time back as the Scene of the Week.

My Cousin Vinny is a cult comedy. I watched it first back in 2000 and I think I revisited it again before I made my Courtroom drama post. Had written this about the movie.

“This is more a courtroom comedy than courtroom drama. The courtroom scenes are excellent the way the inexperienced and unconventional Vinny argues. Joe Pesci is excellent and so is Marisa Tomei who won an Oscar for Best Supporting Actress. Fred Gwynne is great as the old Southern Judge.”

      • FS 7 years ago

Yes, the novelty of the series lies in its 80’s set up rather than its concept of strange things

The Accountant – Well made action movie and good performance from both Ben Affleck and John Bernthal. Recommended!!!

Fantastic Beast and Where to Find Them – The movie worked for me and the graphics were quite good. Story was quite different than usual and the performances were good too. Recommended!!!

Luther – Completed all four seasons and definitely a recommended one. The Series consists of only 4 episodes in first three seasons and 2 in the last season. If you have watched too many series then you might think that it is bit exaggerated, the methods of his chasing the criminals but in a way its not. Usually in a criminal series there are too many characters performing different roles but in this Luther seems to be perfoming 2-3 roles such as of a profiler, detective and a Police job. Anyway its to put it short, they narrow down the hunt and end up catching the criminals catch each in one episode. Recommended!!!

Warcraft – Kind of different movie with abnormal characters but with same regular plot. It was a timepass movie

The Martian – Rewatched it again after a year and loved it again. Its such an engaging movie. Highly Recommended!!!

Snowden – This movie has revealed so many shocking revelations about the public surveillance that its forcing me to keep my laptop shut down when not operating and mobile phone turned off on many different occasions. Last time I was shocked to know that smart TV’s usually records the conversations we have in front of TV and asked its consumer to not talk of critical information BIG FUCK to such TECHNOLOGY. Would recommend every person to watch the movie. Highly Highly Recommended!!!

X-Men Apocalypse – Surely it was entertaining and bit of good story line attached to every character made it a very good entertainer. I loved the fastest man’s act lot, it was fantastic. I also think that the Game of Throne girl got a perfect role for her and that she was was underrated for her charming act. Recommended!!!

Ant-man- I don’t think the movie intended to make much sense . But it was a fun ride . Fast paced, funny, bit of emotional backstory .Overall a entertaining watch .

Chief Kim – South Korean series about a small time accountant who helps all illegal business owners evade tax for some commission without getting caught finally gets a chance to work for one of the biggest corporate group fulfilling his dream only to realise that he was hired in order to cook up some fraud statements and cover up the tracks.

The series is really intereating, thrilling, engaging and comical. Both the leads are fabulous. Recommended!!!

Underworld Blood Wars – had seens its first and third installment; they were pretty good. This is also very good with excellent fighting scenes and beautiful cinematography. Recommended!!!

Kong: Scull Island – regretted for not watching it in 3D. Its a best treat that you can offer to kids these days. Whole photography was awesome, some action scenes were just brilliant even though such similar scenes you might have seen it several times. Recommended!!!

Pink – Had heard a lot about this movie and finally managed to watch it. It is recommended and Amitabh is fantastic but it is not upto the hype. It is a very good movie and all the actresses have done excellent job. Recommended!!!

Collateral Beauty – i think. Ow a days hollywood has just ran out of ideas and hence creating all the bushit stories which are hard to understand even the philosophical nature of the message. The movie isn’t bad and it isn’t because of the cast and their emotional performances. Would dare to avoid the movie when you jave kate winslet, will smith, edward norton & kiera knightingly? Definitely recommended just for the ensemble star cast.

  42. FS 7 years ago

Iron Fist – Marvel comes up with crazy ideas and to some extent they turn out to be good ones, mostly entertaining and Iron Fist is one of the good ones. The fact that i don’t like the lead at all and he is barely tolerable, i still managed to complete the season in one shot because the ending of each episode pushes you to move on to next episode even if you have given up because of the lead actor. Thank god the lead actresses and the supporting star cast and mainly the villain very good. The lead is totally a miscast and misfit, i guess since he knows Kungfu moves and a white he has been roped in to play the lead role. Not eagerly awaiting for the second season but i might wanna watch it. Recommended!!

Scarlet Heart: Ryeo – Korean series about the ancient prices (brothers) who fight to become the king of Goreyo and the lead actress who while drowning goes back to that age of time and how she manages to keep up with that time and her visit to that era will change the history that we know is the series is all about. It has a beautiful romantic love story as well. recommended!!!

Legend of Blue Sea – Korean series, story about a mermaid and her love from the past and present life playing simultaneously. Lead cast is Lee Min ho who is one of the best actors in the korean drama. Liked the series.

    Howards End
Helen Schlegel falls for Paul Wilcox, but is rebuffed. Her sister Margaret becomes friends with his mother, who promises her the family house, Howards End. Unfortunately, after her death, the will disappears and it appears the inheritance will disappear. Until the widower, Henry Wilcox, becomes attracted to Margaret.

The movie was nominated for 9 Oscars including Best Picture and Best Director and won 3 Oscars including Best Actress for Emma Thompson, Best Adapted Screenplay and Best Art Direction.

Could not even understand what was going on and what was the point of it all. The movie was so slow paced and so boring. Cannot understand why this got 9 Oscar nominations.

Anthony Hopkins was good as usual. Emma Thompson was good but don’t think her performance deserved an Oscar win. Vanessa Redgrave was ok in a small role but not sure why she got a nomination for Best Supporting Actress. Helena Bonham Carter was ok.

Also a nameless boy who happens to visit the capital to help his childhood friend find his sister meets with uncertain events that turns his future upside down. Also it is about the formation of special elite soldiers named hwarang formed to protect the future of Sila (kingdom). Highly recommended!!!

Have started watching Better Call Saul Season 2 and finished the first 4 episodes. The first couple of episodes felt a bit boring but the 4th episode was good. Rewatched all Nolan movies . I really hope he goes back to making something like memento and prestige . I like his big budgeted extravagant Interstellar and inception but he was impeccable in Memento & prestige . I really believe there’s a lack of good films in Hollywood now . Nothing really unique or creative going on . Nolan could be the savior.

Forgot to mention. I tried to watch Mirzya and stopped watching after first 20 minutes or so. The kids scenes in school looked so silly. Can’t believe Gulzar wrote that screenplay. There was some bird shooting scene on horses too which looked so fake with CGI.

1 litre of Tears – Beautifully made Japanese series inspired from a real story of a girl named Aya. After first two episodes the series gets into the rythm of its theme and eventually lead you to teary eyes each episode. There are some beautiful scenes with exceptionally brilliant performances. The lead actress is incredible. You literally feel pity. It is one of the best series i have seen so far. Just 11 Episodes. Highly Recommended!!!

The Return of Iljimae – After liking the lead actor of Cinderella, i watched this series. its prequel is very famous but since the print was not great i could not even watch the first episode. This series however is for action lovers as it has so many good action scenes, fighting sequences but yeah bit of cliched storyline. Recommended!!!

Cinderella and four knights – The series started on a brilliant note but again ended up being the cheeky teen lovestories. Watch on your own risk as it is entertaining for sure in most of its episodes not matter how cliche the story line is.

Logan – I liked this movie even though it had bullshit plot and same stupid action sequences that we see in hollywood a lot these days. I also liked “Spoiler Alert” the death of Charles and Logan in the end. Recommended!!!

    Fracture
Willy Beachum (Ryan Gosling), a hotshot prosecutor, is about to leave his post for a lucrative job at a private law firm when his boss (David Strathairn) hands him a seemingly open-and-shut case. Ted Crawford (Anthony Hopkins) tried to kill his wife with a shot to the head and is defending himself in court. All hope for a quick and easy trial fly out the door when Ted proves to be a more cunning and devious adversary than Willy anticipates.

Good movie though its a little slow paced. There’s a nice game of cat and mouse between Ryan Gosling and Anthony Hopkins. There are a couple of nice twists.

Ryan Gosling is good as the prosecutor. Anthony Hopkins is very good as always. Rosamund Pike looked very pretty in a small role.

Completed watching Season 1 of Narcos. Agree with @cr7 on “Solid show .Well acted and good detailing . The old footage and voiceover makes it feel like a documentary.”

The plot/story does seem a bit cliched at times with having watched so many movies on drug Kingpins.

Wagner Moura is excellent as Pablo Escobar. He looks like a normal nice guy one moment and then transforms into a dangerous criminal at another moment. Juan Pablo Raba is very good as Gustavo Escobar’s cousin. Boyd Holbrook is ok as the DEA agent and so is Pedro Pascal as Javier, the other DEA agent. Paulina Gaitán is good as Escobar’s wife. Stephanie Sigman is good as the Colombian journalist. The rest of the cast is good too.

Finished watching the final Season 2 of Narcos. Good show. You almost feel bad for Pablo Escobar even though he is a bad guy as everyone else (the Columbian cops, the American cops and the Los Pepes) were bad too.

Finished watching Season 3 of Narcos. Initially the show felt a little slow especially without the presence of Pablo but the show became engrossing and interesting as the season progressed.

Pedro Pascal was good as Javier Peña, the DEA agent. Michael Stahl-David and Matt Whelan were good as DEA agents. Damián Alcázar was good as Gilberto. Francisco Denis was excellent as Miguel. Arturo Castro was excellent as David. Alberto Ammann was very good as Pacho. Pêpê Rapazote was very good as Chepe. Matias Varela was excellent as Jorge Salcedo, the Cali Cartel’s head of security. Javier Cámara was very good as Pallomari. Kerry Bishé looked pretty and was good as Christina.

Nirvana in Fire – What a Brilliant Series. Awesome. Usually Chinese series tend to be longer with 30-40 episodes and many chinese series tend to drag away from its main plot after 10-15 episodes but this is one hell of a series. I use to find it funny whenever i see it on top 2 of the dramalist. There are so many excellent korean and japanese series, i found it so odd to see this series faring so well on the top ratings untill today. Completed within 2 days, it was so much engaging that i wanted to read the subtitle without missing a sentemce in order not to miss anything.

The action scenes are fantanstic, the romantic scenes are adorable, the bromance is so endearing, the set and cinematography is just Outstanding, The dressing & clothing is exquisite and everything is managed in such minute details, it tells how much hard work might have gone in taking the audience back to liang dynasty. It is absolutely Fantabulous and Highly Recommended!!!

The lead actor is fantastic. Just to give you an idea, the series is about a strategist who visits the Capital to change the history and future of the dynasty. His schemes and his plots are indeed brilliant and keeps you on edge. The are so many spine chilling moments & surprise elements that you cannot stay put after watching few episodes. It actually made me dream about it lol. Awesome.

Logan – Loved it . Its far from a typical superhero film . Its a emotional drama .One just need to know the background well and the movie grips you instantly . Not really a fan of action scenes but quite liked it here as it doesn’t include the stupid blowing the whole city off kinda stuff .Hugh nailed it as logan . The kid was great too .

Started watching “The man in the high castle” . Watched first 6 episodes and liked it till . Its very gripping and each episode ends with a cliffhanger so there’s always the urge to see next episode . The only problem its solely running on suspense but there’s hardly any character development . Hope the characters show more layers in coming episodes.

  55. cr7 7 years ago

Buried- The suspense is gripping and keeps the interest intact . That’s pretty much all you need for a good thriller . Though the plot contains implausibilities .But the realistic treatment and a very sincere performance for Ryan Reynolds make it a good watch .

Had watched it a few years back and liked it a lot. My comment.

“Watched Buried Paul is a U.S. truck driver working in Iraq. After an attack by a group of Iraqis he wakes to find he is buried alive inside a wooden coffin, with only a lighter, flask, flashlight, knife, glowsticks, pen and a mobile phone to help him escape before the oxygen in the coffin runs out.

The whole movie has only one actor Ryan Reynolds on screen and it is completely shot in the coffin. All we hear are voices of people he talks to by making or receiving phone calls.

Liked the movie. It was very interesting and engrossing. It is a indictment of US and American culture. Ryan Reynolds was excellent as the man trapped in the coffin. Direction was very good.

Spoiler Alert The movie does not have a happy ending so people looking for that may be disappointed.”

Started watching “13 reasons why” – Damn, i thought it could be teenage drama of a college and students life but after 2-3 episodes, it turns out to be so impactful that I was reluctant to watch further as the idea itself getting me depressed. The things shown in this series are as real and true as it could be. The little bits & pieces of romantic scenes are so endearing & real that you’ll fall for it. I am at episode 6 and I am taking time to go further. You are already informed about the end result in the episode 1 itself yet you wanna know what it caused and how it led to that extreme decision. What is shown is nothing but reality and what you had not understood earlier about the suicides of students from bullying & mental depression can be understood from this series which in a way highlights the plight of the students who have taken such extreme decisions in this real world.

    Trouble with the Curve
For decades Gus Lobel (Clint Eastwood) has been one of baseball’s best scouts — but now his age is catching up with him. Still, he refuses to be benched even though his bosses are questioning his judgment. Tasked with checking out the country’s hottest batting prospect, Gus is forced to accept help from his daughter, Mickey (Amy Adams). Though they haven’t spent time together in years, father and daughter make new discoveries about their shared past, which could change their future.

Decent one time watch. Nothing great though. Its quite slow paced.

Clint Eastwood was very good as usual. Amy Adams was ok. Her role was not that good though. The way she reacts after finding out the reason why Gus sent her away to stay with her aunt and uncle did not make sense. The abandonment part from Dear Zindagi is very similar to this one. Justin Timberlake was ok.

    • cr7 7 years ago

Watched it after reading your comment.Looked like something I would enjoy. But didn’t work. The movie could have been good but at the end, everything remained half-baked.Neither the father-daughter relation or the scouting part been fully explored. It had a storyline for an indie movie but lacked the innovation.Turned out very predictable and cliche. One thing I absolutely hated is showing gentry as a douchebag. His off the field attitude had nothing to do with the scouting.Totally unnecessary addition to the storyline. Also, the recruitment of the second kid by Amy was way too convenient.

We are the best- It’s about three teenage girls who formed a punk band. The best part of the movie is the quirky humor. The kids acted well. The movie is chaotic, music is awful, characters are flawed and all this gives a very realistic feel.

The insider- I’m a huge fan of movies about investigative journalism and whistleblowers. This movie has to be one best in this genre. It’s riveting from the very first frame. Superlative performances from Pacino and Crowe.

Liked The Insider a lot. Have watched it twice. Here is my comment from a few years back. I am surprised that you had not watched it till now.

“Excellent movie based on a true story. Russell Crowe was excellent and I saw the original guy Wigand’s interview and he is spot on with his impression of him. His acting is similar to his acting from Beautiful Mind which came after this. Al Pacino was excellent and he should have been nominated for Best Supporting Actor. Christopher Plummer was also good as Mike Wallace.

Michael Mann’s direction was excellent – taking a story like this and turning into a interesting thriller requires some talent.”

Have you watched The Pelican Brief? I would recommend that too. Its more of a legal thriller but Denzel is a journalist in that one.

Good Night, and Good Luck is also a good movie about a journalist but not really investigative journalism.

Nightcrawler is about crime journalism where Jake Gyllenhaal’s character blurs the line between observer and participant. He has a negative role in that.

Capote is a good movie too.

All the President’s Men is based on The Watergate scandal. I watched it many years ago. At that time I felt a little underwhelmed by the movie at the time but I need to revisit the movie.

The Verdict- Slow but a quality courtroom drama . Paul Newman was fantastic . Though I think the movie would be more compelling if there was some sort of rebuttal from Newman after Costello’s statement was not admitted into the court. Would make more sense as Newman’s case was weak in term of evidenc and witness. His closing statement was great and all emotional but from purely from legal POV the climax falters. Anyway overall its a good movie . It looked very realitic .Beside the closing statement ,Newman taking victim’s photographs was a great scene .

I loved the Polaroid pictures scene too. Here is my comment on the movie.

“A washed-up, ambulance-chasing attorney gets a chance at redemption when his friend tosses him an open-and-shut medical malpractice case. The movie was nominated for 5 Oscars including Best Picture, Best Director and Best Adapted Screenplay. The movie is directed by Sidney Lumet the director of 12 Angry Men.

Very good movie. Its a little slow paced and does not have any background score for most of its running time which adds to the feeling of slowness. I think The Rainmaker is quite similar to this in that both movies have the leading characters as ambulance chasers and in both there is an associate who helps the lead character and both are related to medical cases.

The scene where Frank takes Polaroid pictures of Deborah Ann Kaye was the best scene of the movie. I was reading some IMDB threads after watching the movie and I saw this thread about the scene and someone has explained the scene so brilliantly.

“The drama of that scene is an extension of the Polaroid technology; once you took the shot, and the photograph emerged from the film cartridge, it was a ghostly pale gray, and you had to wait for the chemicals to dry for the image to emerge (this only took 30-60 seconds, as I recall). As the images of Deborah Ann Kaye come into focus when the chemicals dry, the photographs become a proxy for Frank Galvin “seeing” her, really seeing her, and her condition, for the first time, and I think it is at that moment that Galvin’s conscience returns, and he changes back from “ambulance chaser” to dedicated attorney. As the pictures “develop”, so does Galvin’s conscience.” Link

For almost the entire movie nothing goes right for Frank. This makes the movie seem very real. Getting the testimony of one of the witness completely off the records was a bit too much as I think that’s what the entire movie and verdict is based on. Without that testimony the ending is kind of unexpected.

Paul Newman was excellent as the alcoholic attorney Frank Galvin who suddenly decides to so something out of conscience. He deserved the Best Actor Oscar nomination that he got. Charlotte Rampling was very good as Laura. Jack Warden was good as his associate. James Mason was very good as the rival attorney and was nominated for an Oscar for Best Supporting Actor.”

Budhia Singh – Born to Run
Born into poverty and sold by his mother to a street vendor, a 5-year-old boy goes on to become India’s first marathon-running champion despite his youth.

The scene where the coach is dangling a water bottle in front of the kid and making him run 65 KM makes you feel bad for the kid. One does feel that the 5 year old Budhia was exploited by his coach Birangi Das.

The movie is a mixed experience. It is good in parts and feels amateurish in parts. Manoj Bajpai’s character comes off across as headstrong and somewhat immature. On the other hand you also feel that the media and the children’s organization turned it all into a tamasha.

What’s worse is in real life Buddhia is still not allowed to run marathons and instead being asked to run sprints instead. Had posted this article on the grown up Buddhia Singh when the trailer came out.

Manoj Bajpai was good as the coach but the real coach had a good built. May be Bajpai should have built his body for the role. The kid Mayur Patole was excellent as Budhia. Shruti Marathe was good as the wife Geeta.

    Tropic Thunder
Tugg Speedman (Ben Stiller), pampered action superstar, sets out for Southeast Asia to take part in the biggest, most-expensive war movie produced, but soon after filming begins, he and his co-stars, Oscar-winner Kirk Lazarus (Robert Downey Jr.), comic Jeff Portnoy (Jack Black) and the rest of the crew, must become real soldiers when fighting breaks out in that part of the jungle.

Ok spoof movie. Not that funny. Some of the trailers early on in the movie were a bit funny. The movie had a big starcast with Ben Stiller, Jack Black, Robert Downey Jr., Matthew McConaughey and Tom Cruise.

Ben Stiller was ok. Robert Downey Jr. was excellent and his line “Never go Full Retard” is the most famous line of the movie. Tom Cruise was good as the bald studio executive.

Justice League Dark – if you still like Cartoon type Animated movies then this movie surely shouldn’t be missed. This movies come as a surprise with the characters like “Constantine” (remember keanu revees movie?) Zanata taking Centre Stage & all other members of Justice league looking pale in front of the magic spell of both Constantine & Zanata. Highly Recommended!!!

War Machine – obviously your expectations soar high when a movie on WAR Starring Brad Pit comes out & not necessarily it meets those expectations but this movies is a complete turn off for me. It was a lot about one person’s personality than anything about war. They have shown the bitter truth about the whole scenario and nothing would seem convincing but rather boring. I hated Brad pit in this movie and i really don’t know whether he wan trying to impersonate the character that he was playing or age has caught him up but his character entirely puts u off. Just like movie his performance & expressions are slow paced that can actually put u to sleep. Not Recommended!!!

John Wick Chapter 2 – loved it. Its pure paisa vasool movie. First 10 mins gives very bad vibes because Keanu looks as though has lost his touch and looks too fatigued in fight scenes but the real deal came after that is never ending until the very end. A continuous one hour bloody blood bath action movie. Recommended!!!

Kirik Party – excellent & emotionally strong with right amount of humor takes this movie about college students to a new heights especially for a film from Kannada Industry which is lagging behind other industries in terms of good content & execution. Both the actresses are too cute & lead Ranjith is also excellent. Loved it & highly Recommended!!!

Get Out – wanted to watch this immediately after they released its terrific trailer Nd it turns out that the whole movie was already shown in that 2-3 min trailer itself. The movie is too slow & because of its pace the build up hardly created any impact or shocked from its supposed surprises. I like these kind of movies only if their pace and surprise elements are balanced. Didn’t like it that much as it became so predictable.

Doctor Strange – Time pass stuff, other than illusions rest was same old crap. Time pass coz of small doses on humor at regular intervals.

  65. FS 7 years ago

The Fate & Furious – This movie was fun filled but short of exaggerated scenes & outdated VFX that harmed couple of prequels. Jason is the Man, he is just mesmerizing with his fist fights, stunts and small doses of quickies. Rick too was better and so was Cage. Overall fun and very Entertaining.

The Ghazi Attack – Its a rip off of “Crimson Tide” starring Denzel Washington & Gene Hackman. I had loved Crimson Tide & even liked The Ghazi Attack. I ddin’t feel that impact from the dialogue deliveries of Rana Dagubatti may be because of manoj pandeys incredible voice in Bahubali 2 that suited perfectly. I missed that feel completely. I liked the KK’s role even though small but made its impact. The end was too much filmy, it could have been more intense had they restricted their imagination to its original movie. Recommended!!!

Invisible GuestExcellent Movie. Loved the surprise Punch at the end. Although the twist crossed my mind i had other twists in my mind as well while the story was unfolding. I liked the screenplay and Ms. Goodman. Loved it & Highly Recommended!!!

Bahubali 2 Watching Bahubali 2 again and man the BGM is one Hell of a Kind. Remind me of any movie that can even come close to it. It’s music is on par or better than some of the greatest BGM of Hollywood. The simple scenes are elevated to its unimaginable heights because of its BGM. The joint master of Bahubali with Rajamouli is the Musical Maestro of Bahubali who scored its BGM.

Better call saul 1 & 2 – both the seasons didn’t belong to Saul, I bet you that much. The series is good to v good and it seems there are two leads not one. More than the court room drama or anything related to law, the series revolves more around the current & past life of both the leads. Its no where to be compared to the series “Suits”. If Better call saul is Masala then Suits is Classic.

Have been watching House of Cards Season 5 and have completed 8 episodes so far. Very disappointed with the series till now.

Its been very slow paced and has been boring quite a bit. They have tried to use real life stuff like John Kerry’s Presidential run and his Purple Heart win, Snowden incident, Russian President and all that. It feels so bland now compared to the real life Presidency which itself is like a reality show.

Completed watching House of Cards Season 5. Did not like it. This was the worst season. They tried to add every real life angle to it from Syrian war to ISIS but the show sucked. There was no real drama and no real tension. The ending was crap.

They added a new character Jane Davis and suddenly she has been given lot of importance and shown as a key player. Did not like the character as well as the actress Patricia Clarkson.

    Enemy of the State
Corrupt National Security Agency official Thomas Reynolds (Jon Voight) has a congressman assassinated to assure the passage of expansive new surveillance legislation. When a videotape of the murder ends up in the hands of Robert Clayton Dean (Will Smith), a labor lawyer and dedicated family man, he is framed for murder. With the help of ex-intelligence agent Edward “Brill” Lyle (Gene Hackman), Dean attempts to throw Reynolds off his trail and prove his innocence.

The movie started off really well but in the end became a routine action thriller. The movie is still worth a watch. The movie can be called ahead of its time as some of the things shown about NSA spying on people have become a reality now. Yet some of the stuff shown on how he is tracked everywhere is a bit futuristic or unrealistic.

Will Smith was very good. Gene Hackman was excellent as usual and so was Jon Voight. Jack Black was good in a somewhat negative role.

    Dharam Sankat Mein
Its an official remake of The Infidel and the story/screenplay is exactly the same. The only change they made is changed the religion from Muslim–>Jewish to Hindu–>Muslim.

Movie has a good message but it reminded a lot of movies like Oh My God! and P.K. Expected the movie to be funny but it was not that funny. All the funny scenes were already shown in the promos.

Paresh Rawal’s character is very similar to his character from Oh My God! and he was good. Annu Kapoor was good as the Muslim lawyer. Naseeruddin Shah was good as Neelanand Baba. The background music that plays everytime he comes on the screen was good.

    Rewatched 2 shows.

Seinfeld – .It’s amazing how after all those years Seinfeld is still so funny. There are episodes which I’ve seen at least 3-4 times but still, enjoy watching them. George and Kramer have to be the funniest tv characters. Seinfeld has certainly aged better than Friends for me.

Game of thrones – Got really excited after the season 7 trailer and fast forwarded through previous seasons .Cersei totally saved the show in last season finale. The show was going downhill Literally fast forwarded every single scene of Daenerys.I don’t understand how a ridiculously lame storyline of her is part of such an amazing show.

Love Seinfeld and it is my favorite sitcom of all time. Love Friends too but Friends is basically Seinfeld with good looking actors. Friends became a soap opera later during the later part of the series whereas Seinfeld never got serious.

Agree that George and Kramer have to be the funniest tv characters.

      • cr7 7 years ago

Agreed .I didn’t follow friends completely at first. I liked what I saw .But later when I started from season 1 It didn’t live up to the hype. It’s good and had its moments.I loved Joey and Chandler and would love to see a spin-off with them. But love angle got repetitive and didn’t work me.

did you watch Seinfeld first or Friends first. Basically whatever series we watch first between two, it will become your fav. Mine is obviously Friends.
I love Seinfeld too which I am watching 2nd time. But I have watched Friends 3 times and still I love it.

With Friends you get connected emotionally and I cry every time when finale happens or even between 2-3 episodes.

Seinfeld is smarter than Friends but it never became special for me like the way I cared for Friends characters.

    Hands of Stone
At age 72, legendary trainer Ray Arcel (Robert De Niro) comes out of retirement to coach world-class Panamanian boxer Roberto Durán (Édgar Ramírez). Arcel becomes a mentor to the ferocious fighter, convincing him that winning ultimately comes down to strategy. After scoring knockout after knockout, Duran prepares for a bout against Sugar Ray Leonard, the undefeated lightweight champion. Five months later, on Nov. 25, 1980, the two titans meet for an infamous rematch that makes boxing history.

Its based on a true story. Liked it a lot. Very good movie. Even though they have been many boxing movies and even this one follows the standard template of rise to success and then fall and then rise again the movie was entertaining and keeps one engrossed.

Édgar Ramírez was excellent as the hot headed boxer Roberto Durán. Robert De Niro was excellent as the trainer Ray Arcel. Usher was very good as the boxer Sugar Ray Leonard. Ana de Armas was very good as Duran’s wife and she looked gorgeous.

Hindi Medium- The premise is interesting and relevant but a bit far fetched . What works in favor of the movie is humor and natural acting by the leads .It’s consistently funny.I’m not a fan of a big emotional lecture at the climax. So it didn’t work that well.Still, a fun movie to watch.

    Dangal
Former wrestler Mahavir Singh Phogat (Aamir Khan) trains young daughters Geeta (Fatima Sana Shaikh) and Babita (Sanya Malhotra) to follow in his footsteps and become world-class grapplers.

Finally watched Dangal. As a movie its very good and engrossing. Liked it a lot.

Its based on a true story but it took a lot of liberties with the real life story specially in the 2nd half. The coach is portrayed as a villain and him and Mahavir Singh are shown to be training Geeta in opposite ways. And Mahavir is shown as being locked in a room in the climax.

Here is a link with some fact check on what was shown in the movie.

A fact check of Aamir Khan’s film

Aamir was excellent as Mahavir Singh Phogat. His putting on weight and looking old throughout the movie is commendable. The younger Aamir is there in only scene. Some people had commented that Aamir will play the younger part for a sizable chunk of the movie but its not the case here. I think Aamir deserved the National Award for Best Actor for this movie.

Sakshi Tanwar was good as the mother. Fatima Sana Shaikh was very good as Geeta. Sanya Malhotra was good as Babita. Zaira Wasim and Suhani Bhatnagar were excellent as the younger Phogat sisters.

    The Salesman
After their flat becomes damaged, Emad (Shahab Hosseini) and Rana (Taraneh Alidoosti), a young couple living in Tehran, Iran, must move into another apartment. Once relocated, a sudden eruption of violence linked to the previous tenant of their new home dramatically changes their lives, creating a simmering tension between husband and wife.

Very good movie. Liked it but did not like the part where the husband and wife are acting in the play Death of a Salesman. I don’t think their acting in the play was relevant to the movie. I had said this after watching The Past and I am going to say it again. “Asghar Farhadi is a master when it comes to movies like this. His movies have characters lying/hiding some things which are revealed layer by layer and always involve some tragic incident.”

Shahab Hosseini was very good as the husband and Taraneh Alidoosti was excellent as the wife. The rest of the cast was very good too.

    Highly Recommended.

Their play was relevant to the movie. The play involves the prostitute and a old guy. It also tries to talk about the similar things as the movie lingered upon.
Also if you noticed Shahab abuses the landlord guy who suggested to take the new aprtment which was not in the script and later Shahab says he improvised.

Anyway really liked the movie and it had many themes. Always into movies like these.

Dunkirk- Had it’s moments but disappointed with the end product. The first hour was so erratic. The non-linear storytelling served no purpose. But the biggest problem was lack of any character to root for. After finishing the movie the characters remained nameless random young faces without any emotional connection with the audience.Technically it’s a masterpiece but the other aspects left a lot to be desired. It’s fast paced which is good. But they needed a 15-20 minutes window to set the story and introduce couple of characters properly. The constant bombing and firing is cool for half an hour maybe but then it gets kinda exhausting.Nolan tried a different approach for a war movie. But there are so many aspects of war which could have been explored. So it’s a missed opportunity IMO. Having said that I liked last 30 mins.If it was any other movie I would have said more positive things. But had high hopes from Nolan.

      Finally watched Dunkirk.

Agree with you on most points but I think you have been very generous with the movie. Yes the background score was excellent and the cinematography was good but the movie was still crap. World War movies have been done to death and I think Saving Private Ryan had already showed the terrible bombing (need to revisit the movie though) from what I remember watching when it released.

So I don’t see what was the point of making another war movie. The movie had no story. That Mark Ryalance character going on a boat and not even bothering about the young kid dying was the most disgusting part of the movie. If it is supposed to show greatness then I am afraid it did not work. The fighter plane scenes weren’t that good as one could not even tell whether the plane was British or German and what was happening most of the time. It was amateurish – kind of how it used to be in old movies. And the final scenes with their stupid sense of patriotism felt so corny. There are not many dialogues in the movie. It tries to be a visual movie like 2001: A Space Odyssey but it unfortunately it is not.

Kenneth Branagh was pathetic as the Captain. His scenes were so stupid. All he did was look in some direction and then give an expression of absolute fear or relief. Cillian Murphy was good as the shell-shocked soldier. Mark Rylance’s character was pathetic and his performance was no better either. Tom Hardy did not have anything to do either. All he did in the movie was look at the gas gauge and pretend to be in a plane and shoot at other planes. The rest of the cast was decent.

      Pathetic

      • saurabh sharma 6 years ago

I am not sure if you got the movie, The kid who died was not Mark Ryalance’s son.
They haven’t shown any German soldiers or any enemy as again it goes along with the philosophy of enemy can be anyone.

        • Author
          sputnik 6 years ago

Ok I stand corrected and have edited my comment. Thanks for correcting. But my point about Mark Rylance’s character still stands.

The movie does not have to show the German soldiers or army but then it did not show any backdrop for any of the British soldiers either.

    • saurabh sharma 6 years ago

The non linear storytelling was required for the story to give you a thriller feel otherwise if you just follow linearly then either you don’t see different povs or you don’t get the thriller feel.

Regarding emotional connect, as Nolan has said in many interview it was intention not to have a central character as his philosophy was to show how randomly we send young people to die.

Also this movie is not good to watch on laptop or a normal screen. It needs to be watched on Imax and only Imax as it is shot to give user a immersive feel. The movie’s story is not new or not at all interesting but whole movie’s strength is based on making user feel that they are there in war field, which it did to me. If someone is watching over laptop, imo he/she is not seeing the movie in correct way and hence his reviews doesn’t make much sense.

I really liked the movie. It may not be entertaining but I found it brave for the things it said and risk it took.

This is what I wrote on another blog

“Dunkrik is a different movie then all the other movies as it doesn’t have much of story. Its like you are watching a real life evacuation plan like how it happened or what it feels like to be in war. Its like watching 26/11 video using footage from outside as well as inside of Taj hotel. Now in order to engage audience either you do fictional things like terrorist is looking for you and you are just hiding behind the door or you put your audience in the middle of it or you make it completely like a documentary movie with interviews and real life footage etc.
Since it doesn’t have story, it relies on experience to engage audience. It tries to immerse its viewers and that may not be happening on a normal screen and that why your problems couldn’t convince me.”

      • Author
        sputnik 6 years ago

The non linear story telling did not give it a thriller feel. All it did was confuse.

“Regarding emotional connect, as Nolan has said in many interview it was intention not to have a central character as his philosophy was to show how randomly we send young people to die.”

I don’t think the movie succeeded in bringing out the fact that “how randomly we send young people to die”. In fact the movie does the opposite with Mark Rylance taking his young son and his friend to war – people who were not soldiers and who should not have been anywhere near the action. The movie justifies war with that famous speech of Churchill at the end.

“Also this movie is not good to watch on laptop or a normal screen. It needs to be watched on Imax and only Imax as it is shot to give user a immersive feel. The movie’s story is not new or not at all interesting but whole movie’s strength is based on making user feel that they are there in war field, which it did to me. If someone is watching over laptop, imo he/she is not seeing the movie in correct way and hence his reviews doesn’t make much sense.”

I watched it in a theater – not in IMAX though but watching it in IMAX would not have made any difference to me. There are far better movies which make you feel that you are in war field – Black Hawk Down is the perfect example of such a movie. I think some early scenes of Saving Private Ryan were like that. Platoon is another movie and so is Apocalypse Now from which it is inspired. Das Boot is another excellent German movie set on a submarine where you can really feel you are on a submarine.

The movie did not have any blood nor it was gory. Did you see anyone’s limbs or head blowing off? Did you see anyone’s intestines popping off? It was like a PG movie.

Here are some reviews that say the same things I am saying.

Kroc was impressed by the brothers’ speedy system of making the food and saw franchise potential. Kroc soon maneuvers himself into a position to be able to pull the company from the brothers and create a multi-billion dollar empire.

In California, Mallery tries to break through to a disaffected student, while in Washington, D.C., a presidential hopeful (Tom Cruise) prepares to give a journalist (Meryl Streep) the scoop of a lifetime.

Did not like it. The whole Professor and student track was boring and preachy. In fact the movie was not engrossing and felt like a propaganda movie even though the intention was good.

Did not like Robert Redford’s character. Meryl Streep was good but again her role wasn’t that great. Tom Cruise was ok as the Republican politician. Derek Luke and Michael Pena were good as the soldiers. Andrew Garfield was good as the student.

While the movie is well intentioned and the message is good the movie doesn’t deliver on its potential. The second half is very disappointing. A Vice Chancellor having so much power or influence seems unbelievable.

Swara Bhaskar is excellent in the lead role. Pankaj Tripathi is good but he does not have a good role. He is sidelined in the later part of the movie. Cloud Atlas
Actors (Tom Hanks, Halle Berry, Jim Broadbent) take on multiple roles in an epic that spans five centuries. An attorney harbors a fleeing slave on a voyage from the Pacific Islands in 1849; a poor composer in pre-World War II Britain struggles to finish his magnum opus before a past act catches up with him; a genetically engineered worker in 2144 feels the forbidden stirring of human consciousness — and so on. As souls are born and reborn, they renew their bonds to one another throughout time.

The movie was interesting in parts and I thought the ending would tie everything together but it did not and it seemed contrived. Did not understand the need for the same actors to play multiple roles. And as @FS said in his comment “Didn’t even understand what fuckin language was hanks conversing with helle berry. M.S. Dhoni: The Untold Story
Coaches, mentors and friends inspire young M.S. Dhoni (Sushant Singh Rajput) to become a master cricketer and captain of Team India.

Liked it. The first half is absolutely brilliant. The way a middle class Dhoni struggles to break into the Indian team is so inspiring. The brief tragic love track is excellent too. The second half falters though as there is not really much to show after his success. The movie strictly avoids showing any other players or any incidents from the dressing room. The movie briefly hazes through some incidents like the Twenty20 Final, his rise to captaincy and dropping some players. The climax is the 2011 World Cup Final. The movie can be said to be a tribute from a fan though Neeraj Pandey has denied that he is his fan. The movie credits all the people from friends, coach and others who contributed to his success. The vfx are done well imposing Sushant’s face on Dhoni from some match presentation ceremonies.

The movie is more or less true to Dhoni’s real life story from what I have read. There are some changes in chronology though as he is shown to meet his girlfriend Priyanka after he got selected in the Indian team whereas he met her before he was selected in the Indian team. I think the movie should have stuck to the original story and I think it would have made his entry to the Indian team even more inspiring. The movie has omitted his real life brother completely from the movie though.

Here is a link which talks about that.

    https://www.thequint.com/entertainment/2016/10/03/brother-love-stories-4-things-mahendra-singh-dhoni-biopic-failed-to-tell-us-narendra-sushant-singh-rajput

Sushant Singh Rajput is excellent as Dhoni. This is his career best performance. I had in the past commented that I do not like him and think he is an overrated actor and that he is too earnest in his performances. I take my words back and admit I was wrong. I think this was a role he was born to do. I think with him being from the same area and from a middle class background, he completely nailed the role. He looked good in the cricketing scenes.

Disha Patani looked lovely and was very good in a brief role. Kiara Advani was good too as Sakshi.
Anupam Kher was very good as the typical middle class father who wants his son to just get a good government job. Bhumika Chawla was ok as the elder sister. She doesn’t really have much to do. Rajesh Sharma was very good as Dhoni’s coach Kumud Mishra was good as Deval Sahay. Sandeep Nahar was very good as his Sikh friend and Kranti Prakash Jha was very good as his friend Santosh from whom he learns the helicopter shot. Herry Tangri looked so similar to a young Yuvraj Singh and Ravindra Mankani looked like Jagmohan Dalmiya.

Neeraj Pandey is definitely one of the best directors in India currently and arguably the best. A Wednesday, Special 26, Baby and now Dhoni. He has not made a film that I haven’t liked.

Its based on United States Army General Stanley McChrystal but its fiction. The movie is critical of Obama’s decision to reduce troops and shows him as not meeting his General.

Brad Pitt was very good as the General. He is shown to have the right intentions but partly comes off as a buffoon. He sometimes says smart things but at other times he is unaware of the reality. Ben Kingsley was funny as Afghanistan President Hamid Karzai in a brief role.

Started watching this TV Series and watched a few episodes – one on Bill Gates Vs Steve Jobs, another on Edison vs Tesla and one on the Space Wars between US and Soviet Union.

Liked all the episodes I have seen so far. Excellent show. The show is a documentary with some interviews and dramatization. The acting by all the actors is very good. The casting is very good with the actors resembling the real personalities.

American Vandal- Its a mockumentary primarily aimed to spoof making a murderer. Loved it.I haven’t seen a better mix of satire and suspense before. Didn’t expect the suspense part to get so exciting. Great fun if you enjoy the genre.

Finished watching American Vandal. I was expecting it to be a funny series after the first episode but it was more serious in nature. It was still entertaining though. The ending was kind of ironic.

    No Reservations
Master chef Kate Armstrong (Catherine Zeta-Jones) runs her life and her kitchen with intimidating intensity. However, a recipe for disaster may be in the works when she becomes the guardian of her young niece (Abigail Breslin) while crossing forks with the brash sous-chef (Aaron Eckhart) who just joined her staff. Though romance blooms in the face of rivalry, Kate needs to look outside the kitchen to find true happiness.

Liked it. Good romantic comedy. Nothing great though.

Catherine Zeta-Jones was excellent and looked very pretty. Aaron Eckhart was very good too. Abigail Breslin of Little Miss Sunshine fame was very good too.

    Mindhunter
Mindhunter is an American crime drama web television series created by Joe Penhall, based on the true crime book Mind Hunter: Inside the FBI’s Elite Serial Crime Unit written by John E. Douglas and Mark Olshaker.

Have started watching Season 1 and completed 8 episodes so far. The show is very engrossing. It is excellent with the whole Serial killer interviews part but it is also infuriating with how the lead characters use the knowledge gained from the interviews.

Jonathan Groff is good as Holden Ford but his character is annoying at times. Holt McCallany is very good as Bill Tench. Hannah Gross is good as Debbie, Holden’s girlfriend. Anna Torv is good as Dr. Wendy Carr but her role is somewhat negatively portrayed as a cold, cynical lesbian. Cameron Britton is excellent as Edmund Kemper, the serial killer. Happy Anderson is excellent as the serial killer Jerry Brudos.

Completed watching Mindhunter. Excellent show. The first couple of episodes were slow paced and the show took time to get started though.

The final episodes were very good with the whole dynamics between Holden, Bill, Wendy and the new detective Gregg. The ending was excellent.

    88 Minutes
Famed forensic psychiatrist Dr. Jack Gramm (Al Pacino) enjoys a reputation as one of the most sought-after profilers around. His expert testimony has resulted in the conviction of many criminals, including serial killer Jon Forster. On the eve of Forster’s execution, one of Gramm’s students is murdered in a vicious copycat crime, and Gramm himself receives an ominous message informing him that he has less than 90 minutes to live.

Its a time-pass thriller. The premise is interesting but it has some implausible stuff. The female lead tagging along with Pacino seemed forced.

Al Pacino was good but he looked old. Alicia Witt was pretty but her tagging along with Gramm was totally forced. Leelee Sobieski looked pretty but her role was stupid. Neal McDonough was ok n a negative role but the role needed a better actor.

    The Lego Ninjago Movie
The battle for NINJAGO City calls to action young Master Builder Lloyd, aka the Green Ninja, along with his friends, also secret ninja warriors. Led by Master Wu, as wise-cracking as he is wise, they must defeat the evil warlord Garmadon, who also happens to be Lloyd’s dad. Pitting father against son, the epic showdown tests these fierce but undisciplined modern-day ninjas as they learn to check their egos and pull together to unleash the inner power of Spinjitzu.

It was partly silly but entertaining and funny. Some of the dialogues of Master Wu (voiced by Jackie Chan) and Garmadon are very funny. There is a small scene at the beginning and end with Jackie Chan.

    Jack Reacher: Never Go Back
Investigator Jack Reacher (Tom Cruise) springs into action after the arrest of Susan Turner (Cobie Smulders), an Army major accused of treason. Suspecting foul play, Jack embarks on a mission to prove that the head of his old unit is innocent. After crossing paths with the law, Reacher must now go on the lam to uncover the truth behind a major government conspiracy that involves the death of U.S. soldiers.

Usual formula movie about government conspiracy and military but it was a decent watch. It was fast paced and did not bore.

Tom Cruise was good as usual. Cobie Smulders was ok. Patrick Heusinger was good as the villain.

    Stranger Things
Completed watching the first two episodes of Season 2. It had some interesting things like another character similar to Eleven with the number 8 but the show is still getting started.

    —————————–

    Trading Places
Upper-crust executive Louis Winthorpe III (Dan Aykroyd) and down-and-out hustler Billy Ray Valentine (Eddie Murphy) are the subjects of a bet by successful brokers Mortimer (Don Ameche) and Randolph Duke (Ralph Bellamy). An employee of the Dukes, Winthorpe is framed by the brothers for a crime he didn’t commit, with the siblings then installing the street-smart Valentine in his position. When Winthorpe and Valentine uncover the scheme, they set out to turn the tables on the Dukes.

Started watching it because the story felt somewhat similar to Tere Mere Sapne. Watched 20 minutes and could not stand it anymore. It was not funny at all and felt so dated.

Completed watching Stranger Things Season 2. The series picked up after the first two episodes and it got more interesting and engrossing as the series progressed. The last but one episode was the best of the series. The final episode was a little tame and it did not have the climactic finish the series was progressing to. The cast was good as usual.

Chappie tells the story of a robot imbued with artificial intelligence who is stolen by two local gangsters who want to use him for their own nefarious purposes.

Good entertaining movie. Liked it. There is some humor too. Its not a serious sci-fi movie.

Sharlto Copley was very good as the voice of Chappie. Dev Patel was good. Ninja and ¥o-landi Vi$$er were ok. Jose Pablo Cantillo was good as Amerika. Hugh Jackman was good in a negative role. Sigourney Weaver has a useless role.

    To Rome with Love
Four tales unfold in the Eternal City: While vacationing in Rome, architect John (Alec Baldwin) encounters a young man whose romantic woes remind him of a painful incident from his own youth; retired opera director Jerry (Woody Allen) discovers a mortician with an amazing voice, and he seizes the opportunity to rejuvenate his own flagging career; a young couple (Alessandro Tiberi, Alessandra Mastronardi) have separate romantic interludes; a spotlight shines on an ordinary man (Roberto Benigni).

Very weird movie. Parts of it were interesting but some of it did not even make sense like Alec Baldwin’s character being magically present in situations as if he was a ghost. It was also quite long and boring.

Woody Allen was usual. Alec Baldwin was ok. Roberto Benigni was good. Penélope Cruz looked very pretty. Jesse Eisenberg was good. Greta Gerwig and Ellen Page were ok.

Excellent series. Completed five episodes so far and loving on it.

Jon Bernthal is excellent as Frank Castle. Ebon Moss-Bachrach is very good as David Lieberman. Ben Barnes is good as Billy Russo. Amber Rose Revah is ok as Dianah Madani. The rest of the cast is good too.

    Monster
Shortly after moving to Florida, longtime prostitute Aileen Wuornos (Charlize Theron) meets young and reserved Selby Wall (Christina Ricci) and a romance blossoms. When a john (Lee Tergesen) attempts to brutalize Aileen, she kills him and resolves to give up prostitution. But supporting herself and her new girlfriend through legitimate means proves extremely difficult, and she soon falls back on old ways. More johns die, and Selby can’t help but think her new friend is responsible.

Movie was decent. The depiction of the life of a prostitute was very well done. You almost feel bad for Aileen even though she killed people.

Charlize Theron was excellent as Aileen. Not only her look was very different but she also put on weight for the role. The Oscar she won for Best Actress was well deserved. Christina Ricci was ok.

    Recommended for Charlize Theron’s performance.

    Suits
In need of an associate, big-time Manhattan corporate lawyer Harvey Specter hires the only guy who impresses him — college dropout Mike Ross. The fact that Ross isn’t actually a lawyer isn’t lost on Specter, who believes his new right-hand man is a legal prodigy with the book smarts of a Harvard law grad and the street smarts of a hustler. However, in order to keep their jobs, the charade must remain strictly between these two unconventional thinkers.

Completed watching the first season and watching Season 2. Like it so far. The two lead characters are smart-asses and all episodes have a similar pattern but the show is still entertaining and engrossing.

Agree with @fearlesssoul that “Its very sharp and intelligently directed series with wholesome entertainment.” Link”

Gabriel Macht is excellent as Harvey Specter. Patrick J. Adams is excellent as Mike Ross. Rick Hoffman is very good as Louis Litt. I did not know that the actress playing Rachel was Meghan Markle, who has got engaged to Prince Harry. She is very good and her chemistry in scenes with Mike Ross is excellent. Sarah Rafferty is very good as Donna and her expressions are too good.

Thanks for the recco. Will try to check it out soon. Have heard lot of praise on twitter too.

It has the following nominations at Golden Globes. So it will most probably be a contender at the Oscars too.

Best Actress – Motion Picture Drama Frances McDormand
      Best Director Martin McDonagh
Best Motion Picture – Drama Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri
      Best Original Score Carter Burwell
      Best Screenplay Martin McDonagh
Best Supporting Actor – Motion Picture Sam Rockwell

      • cr7 6 years ago

Best actress is a lock .Sam Rockwell deserves supporting actor but I guess William dafoe is a strong contender too. Not getting the award show hype of get out and dunkirk . Get out was entertaining but nowhere near to be the best movie of the year . Dunkirk was awful .

    Walt Before Mickey
In the 10 years before the creation of Mickey Mouse, Walt Disney struggles to master the art and business of animation.

Its a movie based on Walt Disney. It was well intentioned but it was low budget and had an amateurish feel to it. It did do a good job of showing how hard he had to struggle before coming up with Mickey Mouse.

Thomas Ian Nicholas was very good as Walt Disney. Jon Heder was good as his brother Roy Disney. Armando Gutierrez was very good as Ub Iwerks. Jodie Sweetin was good as Charlotte Disney,
