TheBigShort The Big Short
When four outsiders saw what the big banks, media and government refused to, the global collapse of the economy, they had an idea: The Big Short. Their bold investment leads them into the dark underbelly of modern banking where they must question everyone and everything.

Excellent movie on the housing market crash. Its based on a true story. Even though the movie is about the financial crisis its entertaining and funny. Initially it feels odd that the movie is trying to be funny about a serious subject but it gets better. Some scenes are innovative like the scenes where some celebrity explains some difficult banking terminology for the layman or the scene where Ryan Gosling, the narrator tells that a particular scene did not actually happen that way in real life.

Christian Bale plays a very eccentric character with one glass eye. He doesn’t have as much screen time as Steve or Ryan and his performance is ok. Steve Carell is excellent as Mark Baum who has problem with everything that is wrong. Ryan Gosling is excellent as Jared Vennett and he is hilarious with his narration and in scenes where he breaks the fourth wall. Brad Pitt has less screen time but is good as the retired banker.

    Concussion
While conducting an autopsy on former NFL football player Mike Webster (David Morse), forensic pathologist Dr. Bennet Omalu (Will Smith) discovers neurological deterioration that is similar to Alzheimer’s disease. Omalu names the disorder chronic traumatic encephalopathy and publishes his findings in a medical journal. As other athletes face the same diagnosis, the crusading doctor embarks on a mission to raise public awareness about the dangers of football-related head trauma.

The first half of the movie was very good and it felt like it will turn out to be an excellent movie but it completely lost its plot in the 2nd half. It felt like some amateurish conspiracy movie with the FBI raid and all. One moment Will’s character is friends with Alec Baldwin’s character and the next moment he is accusing him of being involved with NFL.

Will Smith was very good as Dr. Bennet Omalu. Alec Baldwin was ok. The rest of the cast was ok.

Finally watched Dil Dhadakne Do. Liked it. Its not perfect and the ending was kind of silly but it was hilarious in parts.

Anil Kapoor was excellent in every scene whether as the hypocritical scheming businessman part or in the emotional scenes later on. Shefali was very good too. Priyanka was good too. Farhan was usual in a small role. Anushka wasn’t that good in a small role.

Ranveer was excellent. He was so natural whether it was comic scenes or emotional scenes. I know at one point of time people used to mock Ranveer that he is not good looking and that he got BBB through contacts or something. But seeing his excellent performances in BBB, Dil Dhadakne Do and Bajirao Mastani I can safely say he is one of the most talented young actors in Bollywood today and I think he will go a long way. Many praise that overrated Ranbir Kapoor but I think Ranveer is a much superior and more talented actor than Ranbir.

    The Shining
Jack Torrance (Jack Nicholson) becomes winter caretaker at the isolated Overlook Hotel in Colorado, hoping to cure his writer’s block. He settles in along with his wife, Wendy (Shelley Duvall), and his son, Danny (Danny Lloyd), who is plagued by psychic premonitions. As Jack’s writing goes nowhere and Danny’s visions become more disturbing, Jack discovers the hotel’s dark secrets and begins to unravel into a homicidal maniac hell-bent on terrorizing his family.

Was wanting to watch since a very long time and finally watched it. Loved it. Excellent movie and definitely one of the best horror movies ever. The whole atmosphere with a family in a large empty hotel cut off from the rest of the world was very good. There were times specially during the climax when Wendy did stupid stuff as dumb characters in horror movies usually do which is annoying.

Jack Nicholson was excellent as the psycho who loses it completely at the end. Shelley Duvall was good in a role that is a standard horror movie character. There were times when she was irritating.
Danny Lloyd was excellent as Danny. Scatman Crothers was good too.

I hated it when i saw it. horror movie usually don’t age with time. Shining looked pretty bad, no fear factor, no thrills infact nothing. I liked 2-3 scenes thats all.

I don’t like horror movies and I agree that they usually don’t age with time. I thought The Exorcist was funny rather than scary. But I liked Shining not because its a horror movie but more because it is psychological movie. Living all alone for months cutoff from everyone could make anyone go crazy. I probably would have liked the movie more if it did not actually have the supernatural stuff but in the end the movie leaves no doubt about the supernatural stuff.

I liked the whole atmosphere with the kid cycling through the hotel even though it seemed ridiculous that the mother would just leave the kid like that. I liked the whole “Shining” communication part even though some of it felt silly. There were quite a few scenes with the cheap thrills with the background music.

Wendy’s character was typical horror movie or B movie character – the dumb character who you know will cause all the problems. Wendy goes upstairs when sounds are coming from downstairs was silly.

I think I like Stanley Kubrick’s movies. There is something very visual with all the colors and the whole psychological aspect of those movies. I liked 2001: A Space Odyssey and A Clockwork Orange too.

If you don’t log in, you see someone instead of actual screen name.

    1. 7 Cajas – This could be remade with younger teen actors in Hindi.
    2. Sicario – Tight, dark, gritty movie.
    3. The martian – okay.
    4. The Thomas Crown Affair (1968) – It is a good watch. New one is better IMO. Saw new one as well again.
    5. Water Diviner – Was in Istanbul recently. So could identify as movie is set in Turkey. Nothing great.
    6. Run all night – Typical Liam Neeson movie. You can pass this one.
    7. The Man from U.N.C.L.E. – Nothing special.
    8. Mad Max Fury road – Amazing. But can see why some folks didn’t like it.

Pyaar Ka Punchanama 2 – Loved pkp . So had huge expectation . And the sequel lived up to it . The plot and execution are quite similar to the prequel . It looks a bit more polished due experience maybe . Both the new guys did well . Dialogues as expected were kickass .

Just watched Pyaar Ka Punchanama 2. Liked it. As I said before I have not seen PKP 1 though I have seen and loved the iconic hilarious scenes from the first.

Its funny but its also serious in parts. I think this is a movie that most guys will like/love. I think they will identify with many of things or dialogues in the movie.

Loved the ending. I was hoping for the same ending but thought the director will not have the guts to do that. But he actually did it.

Kartik was very good. He was brilliant in the monologue scene in this one too. Omkar Kapoor and Sunny Singh were good too. Nushrat Bharucha, Sonalli Sehgall and Ishita Raj Sharma were all good too.

The Sopranos – Not sure whether i had posted the comment here or not but i would like the members to watch the series. Although it deals with Mob business, it teaches you so much about entrepreneurship, key decision making tips, planning, thinking ahead and making sure you have the right attitude in you. Highly Recommended!!

This is where I leave you – Subtle comedy and i liked it.

Arrested Development – Season 1 complete and its okay to timepass series

Pyar ka Punchnama 2 – Liked it but i liked the first part more. This also lives upto its expectations.

Star Wars 7 – Never expected it to like it since i have watched only two of its prequel and liked none but I kinda liked it very much. Nothing great but since it has some basic story, i liked it very much.

    The English Patient
The sweeping expanses of the Sahara are the setting for a passionate love affair in this adaptation of Michael Ondaatje’s novel. A badly burned man, Laszlo de Almasy (Ralph Fiennes), is tended to by a nurse, Hana (Juliette Binoche), in an Italian monastery near the end of World War II. His past is revealed through flashbacks involving a married Englishwoman (Kristin Scott Thomas) and his work mapping the African landscape. Hana learns to heal her own scars as she helps the dying man.

It was nominated for 12 Oscars and won 9 including Best Picture and Best Director.

Had watched the movie long time back and liked it back then because the betrayal at the end seemed novel to me. But this time I did not like the movie much. Its too long and too slow. There is an episode in Seinfeld where Elaine watches The English Patient and hates it. I think many would feel the same way while some may like it because it has an slow epic romance feel to it. The art direction is very good and the cinematography is very good. The original score is very good too.

Ralph Fiennes looked very good and was very good as Almasy. Kristin Scott Thomas looked very pretty and was very good too. Juliette Binoche was good and she won the Oscar for Best Supporting Actress. Willem Dafoe and Naveen Andrews were good too. Colin Firth has a small role. The rest of the cast was good too.

    Creed
Adonis Johnson (Michael B. Jordan) never knew his famous father, boxing champion Apollo Creed, who died before Adonis was born. However, boxing is in his blood, so he seeks out Rocky Balboa (Sylvester Stallone) and asks the retired champ to be his trainer. Rocky sees much of Apollo in Adonis, and agrees to mentor him, even as he battles an opponent deadlier than any in the ring. With Rocky’s help, Adonis soon gets a title shot, but whether he has the true heart of a fighter remains to be seen.

Its a decent boxing movie with the usual boxing movie cliches. The boxing matches are shown as those HBO boxing matches are. The ending is somewhat different for a boxing movie.

Michael B. Jordan was ok. Sylvester Stallone was very good and it was nice to see him in a role like this.

Watched Wazir. Its a decent thriller. Its just one and a half hours long with no lip synced songs. So its engrossing.

There is a final twist at the end. I first thought on that lines but disregarded it because of what was shown in the movie. Bejoy Nambiar cheats similar to how Sujoy Ghosh cheated with Kahaani. Now some will like the twist but some will hate the twist because it is more on the implausible side.

Amitabh was good as the handicapped Panditji. Farhan was very good as the cop. Aditi Rao Hydari looked very pretty and was very good too. John Abraham was there in just a couple of scenes and so was Neil Nitin Mukesh.

    Bridge of Spies
A dramatic thriller set against the backdrop of a series of historic events, Bridge of Spies is “absolutely brilliant and totally riveting” (Bill Zwecker, Chicago Sun-Times). James Donovan (Tom Hanks) is a Brooklyn lawyer who finds himself thrust into the center of the Cold War when the CIA sends him on a nearly impossible mission to negotiate the release of a captured American U-2 pilot. High stakes and suspense power a story that captures the essence of a man who risked everything, vividly bringing his personal journey to life.

Very good movie. Liked it. Its based on a true story and the movie stays pretty true to the actual story except for some minor additions and exaggerations. The movie has been nominated for six Oscars including Best Picture, Best Original Screenplay and Best Original Score which are all well deserved.

    https://www.historyvshollywood.com/reelfaces/bridge-of-spies/

Tom Hanks was very good as James Donovan, the lawyer and negotiator. Mark Rylance was excellent as the Russian spy and he has been nominated deservedly for an Oscar for Best Supporting Actor. Amy Ryan was ok.

    Room
Both highly suspenseful and deeply emotional, ROOM is a unique and touching exploration of the boundless love between a mother and her child. After 5-year-old Jack and his Ma escape from the enclosed surroundings that Jack has known his entire life, the boy makes a thrilling discovery: the outside world. As he experiences all the joy, excitement, and fear that this new adventure brings, he holds tight to the one thing that matters most of all—his special bond with his loving and devoted Ma.

The movie was perfect and brilliant up until the escape from the Room and I think it should have ended there. But the movie kind of falters when it goes on after that in showing how they cope after their escape. The kid was reacting the way he was supposed to but the mother seemed very impatient with things. The TV interview part was bad with the kind of questions she was being asked. Still the movie has a happy ending and it is overall a very good movie.

The movie has been nominated at the Oscars for Best Picture, Best Director and Best Adapted Screenplay. Brie Larson was excellent specially in the first half and has deservedly been nominated for a Best Actress. Jacob Tremblay was excellent as the kid and I think he deserved a Oscar nomination too. Joan Allen was good as the grandmother.

    The Danish Girl
The remarkable love story inspired by the lives of artists Lili Elbe and Gerda Wegener (portrayed by Academy Award winner Eddie Redmayne [“The Theory of Everything”] and Alicia Vikander [“Ex Machina”]), directed by Academy Award winner Tom Hooper (“The King’s Speech,” “Les Misérables”). Lili and Gerda’s marriage and work evolve as they navigate Lili’s groundbreaking journey as a transgender pioneer.

The movie is very loosely based on the true story of Lili Elbe and Gerda Wegener. There are a lot of changes from the true story and the movie completely avoids many of the things that actually happened as can be read from the link here.

    https://www.historyvshollywood.com/reelfaces/danish-girl/

Good movie but it is very leisurely paced. And it does feel a little weird or creepy initially when Einar starts dressing up as a woman. While the movie is about a woman trapped in a man’s body its also about the loving and sacrificing wife who loses her husband.

Eddie Redmayne is excellent as the woman trapped in a man’s body and has deservedly been nominated for an Oscar for Best Actor. Alicia Vikander looked gorgeous and is excellent as Gerda. She has been nominated for an Oscar for Best Supporting Actress but I think she should have been nominated for a Best Actress instead. She has a very lengthy role and is the female lead not a supporting lead. Matthias Schoenaerts is good as Einar’s friend.

    Legend
From Academy Award® winner Brian Helgeland (L.A. Confidential, Mystic River) comes the true story of London’s most notorious gangsters, twins Reggie and Ronnie Kray (Tom Hardy, Mad Max: Fury Road). As the brothers rise through the criminal underworld, Ronnie advances the family business with violence and intimidation while Reggie struggles to go legitimate for local girl Frances Shea (Emily Browning, Sucker Punch). In and out of prison, Ronnie’s unpredictable tendencies and the slow disintegration of Reggie’s marriage threaten to bring the brothers’ empire tumbling to the ground.

Boring, pointless movie glorifying a couple of gangsters.

Tom Hardy was good in both the roles and Emily Browning was good as Frances.

    Iris
Celebrated English author Iris Murdoch first became known as a brilliant young scholar at Oxford whose boundless spirit dazzled those around her. Then, during her remarkable career as a novelist and philosopher, she continued to prove herself a woman ahead of her time. Even in later life, as age and illness robbed Iris of her remarkable gifts, nothing could diminish her immense influence or weaken the lifelong bond she shared with her devoted husband.

Did not like the movie at all. It was a boring saga of a old woman suffering from Alzheimer’s disease and her husband’s struggle to take care of her.

Judi Dench was good as the old Iris and was nominated for an Oscar for Best Actress. Jim Broadbent was very good as the old husband John and won an Oscar for Best Supporting Actor. Kate Winslet was good as the younger Iris but I don’t think she deserved the Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actress that she received. Hugh Bonneville was good as the younger John.

    Finally watched Bajrangi Bhaijaan.

Excellent movie. Definitely one of the best movies of 2015. Loved it even though the ending and some scenes were implausible or naive at best. The best thing about the movie is its heart because of which one can’t help but ignore or overlook those things. Kabir Khan kept the movie humorous and entertaining even when it could have turned serious.

Salman was excellent. He was very natural and had a innocence about him. Its definitely one of his best performances ever. Except for one fight scene at the brothel which was slightly over the top he pretty much gets thrashed throughout the movie.

The little girl Harshaali Malhotra looked so cute and was excellent as Shahida/Munni. Kareena was very good in a smaller role. Nawaz was very good as Chand Nawab.

Sputnik – You saw Bajrangi Bhaijaan so late? How could you man. It is one of the Best Films in Decades.

Bridge of spies – Whata lovely and intriguing movie. Awsome, loved every bit of it. Last 30 mins were incredible and i think Bridge of Spies 2 could be made on prisoner exchange between Cuba and America shown at the end credits. I was very touched in last 10 mins even so knowingly that these are happy ending feel good movies. Bravo to Tom Hanks and Steven Speilberg, Thanks for Recommending Sputnik. Highly Recommended!!!

The Revenant – All I can say about the movie is that it has one of the most terrifying scene one can see onscreen. I was literally shaken twice during that scene “Bear Attack” other than that it has nothing but artistic representation of one’s own imagination without any basic story. It’s kind of Madmax but with brains, craft and Award worthy Performances from Tom Hardy and Leo. They were just fantastic in their appearances, language, accent and tone of character.

Daredevil – This series belongs to kids, other than episode 6 nothing seemed intriguing but a timepass one. won’t bother for season 2.

Sicario – Fantastic movie, dark and gritty. You just go with the flow of the movie as you get as curious to know whats happening as the lead character of the movie. Highly Recommended!!!

    Brooklyn
BROOKLYN tells the profoundly moving story of Eilis Lacey (Saoirse Ronan), a young Irish immigrant navigating her way through 1950s Brooklyn. Lured by the promise of America, Eilis departs Ireland and the comfort of her mother’s home for the shores of New York City. The initial shackles of homesickness quickly diminish as a fresh romance sweeps Eilis into the intoxicating charm of love. But soon, her new vivacity is disrupted by her past, and Eilis must choose between two countries and the lives that exist within.

The movie has been nominated for Best Picture and Best Adapted Screenplay at the Oscars. There is nothing great about this movie to deserve any Oscar nominations whatsoever. Its an ok movie at best. Its a Victorian style romantic love story with no great plot.

Ellis gets secretly married to a guy in New York but has no problem dating another guy when she goes back home. She even stops reading her husband’s letters. She decides to go back home only when her lie is found out by someone. I don’t even understand what was the point of the movie.

I know there has been a lot of controversy this year about Black actors not being nominated at the Oscars but when a mediocre movie like this with a completely white cast gets nominated for Best Picture then one has to wonder if those criticisms are valid.

Saoirse Ronan has been nominated for Best Actress at the Oscars. She was good as Ellis but there is nothing Oscar worthy about her performance to deserve that nomination. If this is a Oscar worthy performance then every actress who has ever acted in one of those Victorian style love stories should get a Oscar nomination. Emory Cohen was good as Tony.

“The Program” – Its a must watch, totally well researched movie “not documentary” on Lance Armstrong. The Actor is almost lookalike to Armstrong & he played the character so well that you will have difficulty to make a difference between the two. I am not sure why this movie hasn’t made headlines or won any awards? May be because its kind of a slap on America as he was considered an American Icon? Highly Recommended!!!

    Straight Outta Compton
In 1987, five young men, using brutally honest rhymes and hardcore beats, put their frustration and anger about life in the most dangerous place in America into the most powerful weapon they had: their music. Taking us back to where it all began, Straight Outta Compton tells the true story of how these cultural rebels—armed only with their lyrics, swagger, bravado and raw talent—stood up to the authorities that meant to keep them down and formed the world’s most dangerous group, N.W.A. And as they spoke the truth that no one had before and exposed life in the hood, their voice ignited a social revolution that is still reverberating today.

The movie has been nominated for Best Original Screenplay at the Oscars. Liked it. Good movie. Its about the rise and fall of the hip hop group N.W.A. Its similar to other rise and fall stories of music bands but the difference is that this time its about a Black hip hop group. The movie also shows the racism that they face from police which makes the movie topical. I think this should have been nominated for an Oscar for Best Picture instead of the movie Brooklyn.

The movie is produced by N.W.A members Ice Cube, Dr. Dre and Eazy-E’s widow. O’Shea Jackson, Jr. was very good as his real life father Ice Cube. Corey Hawkins was very good as Dr. Dre. Jason Mitchell was excellent as Easy-E. I think he should have been nominated for an Oscar for Best Supporting Actor. Paul Giamatti was very good as the manager.

    Filmistaan
In Mumbai, affable Bollywood buff and wanna-be-actor Sunny, who works as an assistant director, fantasizes on becoming a heart-throb star. However, at every audition he is summarily thrown out. Undeterred, he goes with an American crew to remote areas in Rajasthan to work on a documentary.
One day terrorist group kidnaps him instead of an American crew-member. Sunny finds himself on enemy border amidst guns and pathani-clad guards, who decide to keep him hostage until they locate their original target. The house where he is confined belongs to a Pakistani, whose trade stems from pirated Hindi films, which he brings back every time he crosses the border. Soon, the two factions realize that they share a human and cultural bond. The film shows how cinema can be the universal panacea for co-existence.

Liked it. Good movie with a good message though it dragged a lot in the 2nd half. I think it should have been a one and a half hour movie instead of 2 hrs. Sunny’s multiple escape attempts and getting caught each time was a bit repetitive. Its not a hilarious comedy but I think movie buffs will enjoy or at least chuckle at the mimickry and the movie references.

Sharib Hashmi was good in the lead role. At first I thought he was a bad actor but I think it was deliberate as there is a scene in the climax where he admits he is a bad actor. Wish his mimicry was better though.

Inaamulhaq was excellent as Aftaab who was very good as the Iraqi general in the movie Airlift too. Kumud Mishra was excellent as Mehmood who was good in Airlift as the govt officer in Airlift too. Gopal Dutt was excellent as Jawwad too.

The movie won the National Award for Best Hindi film in 2013.

Airlift – Except 4-5 lame scenes its a good movie .Some of the scenes are very well directed . Akhsay is a sincere actor when it comes to serious movies . He has acted really well here .

Don’t know much about the original story but looked like the director took lot of liberties to make the narration more cinematic . Also don’t think the evacuation of 170000 would have been possible with only Katyal’s heroics and bureaucratic activity . I think the role of Indian govt did not reflect well in the movie .

          Yeah Akshay was very good.

Read my review and the articles in my review and my comment in that post.

I don’t know why they had to over exaggerate the heroics . There is no way that 170000 people can all be placed in one single place and all the logistics handled. The movie tried to show that one man single handedly did everything.

“I think the role of Indian govt did not reflect well in the movie .”

Agree. Its supposed to be the biggest civil evacuation ever and the movie should have shown the govt in positive light. Instead the govt is shown as incompetent and the minister is shown in bad light.

    Loins of Punjab Presents
A ruthless philanthropist. A Bhangra rapper. An over-protected prodigy. A reckless actress. A lovelorn businessman. An entrepreneurial yogi. And a Loin King. Enter a roller-coaster world of seven strangers whose lives collide during a singing contest in a small New Jersey town.

Liked it. Some scenes were hilarious like the scene where Bokade checks out the mattress in the hotel or the scene where Sania spills food over Vikram and almost every scene with the Patels. I don’t think everyone will like this one though. I think people who have lived in US for some time or who are Indian Americans will like this one more.

Its a low budget movie and there is not much story/plot and Shabana Azmi’s character going about eliminating the other contestants was a bit too much.

Shabana Azmi was good as the snotty socialist Rrita Kapoor. Ishita Sharma very good as Preeti Patel, the talented singer. Jameel Khan was excellent as Bokade. Seema Rahmani was good as Sania Rehman, the singer who can’t speak Hindi. Ayesha Dharker was good as the Indian girl with the American boyfriend. Kunaal Roy Kapur was very good as Mr. White. Michael Raimondi was good as Josh Cohen, the American who loves India and everything about India. Samrat Chakrabarti was good as Trance Sen. Darshan Jariwalan was very good as Sanjeev Patel. Ajay Naidu was very good as the Bhangra singer Turbanotorious B.D.G..

Manish Acharya who is also the writer, producer and the director of the movie was good as the nerdy IT worker Vikram Tejwani. Just found that he died back in 2010 when he fell off a horse. RIP.

    Dacait
Its about Arjun Yadav who return from the city after completing his studies. Arjun tries to be a peacemaker between his brother Amrit and Thakur Bhanwar Singh. But the Thakur has his brother killed. His sister commits suicide and his mother becomes mad. Arjun becomes a Dacait to avenge the killings of his family members.

Did not like the movie much. Its a cliched movie with the bad Thakur trying to usurp the villager’s lands and the hero becoming a Dacait to take revenge. The movie is written by Javed Akhtar and its not a good story/screenplay. Pretty much everybody gets killed in the movie.

The background music by R.D. Burman was good at some places reminding of Sholay. The songs were all bad though.

Sunny Deol was good as Arjun. This was probably Raakhee’s first mother role which later on became a cliche as she reprised it in movie after movie (Ram Lakhan, Baazigar, Karan Arjun and so on). Meenakshi Sheshadri initially was trying to be Basanthi of Sholay but later on she was ok. Suresh Oberoi was ok as the elder brother. Urmila had a small role as Arjun’s sister.
