american-sniper Synopsis:
Navy SEAL Chris Kyle is sent to Iraq with only one mission: to protect his brothers-in-arms. His pinpoint accuracy saves countless lives on the battlefield and, as stories of his courageous exploits spread, he earns the nickname β€œLegend.” However, his reputation is also growing behind enemy lines, putting a price on his head and making him a prime target of insurgents. He is also facing a different kind of battle on the home front: striving to be a good husband and father from halfway around the world. Despite the danger, as well as the toll on his family at home, Chris serves through four harrowing tours of duty in Iraq, personifying the spirit of the SEAL creed to β€œleave no one behind.” But upon returning to his wife, Taya (Sienna Miller), and kids, Chris finds that it is the war he can’t leave behind.

The movie is based on the book American Sniper: The Autobiography of the Most Lethal Sniper in U.S. Military History by Chris Kyle. The movie is quite similar to The Hurt Locker in that both movies are set against the backdrop of the Iraq War. Both the protagonists are uncomfortable in their day to day life and want to be back in action. Both movies avoid any politics of the Iraq War. A major difference is that in The Hurt Locker Jeremy Renner’s character is friendly with a Iraqi kid and he does feel bad for the Iraqis like the scene where he cannot defuse the bomb planted on a innocent Iraqi. In American Sniper Bradley Cooper’s character is not friendly with any Iraqis and there are hardly any good or innocent Iraqis in the movie.

The first scene where Kyle shoots a kid and a women who are about to throw a grenade is very good. The scene where the father tells them they cannot be sheep or wolf but have to be sheepdog is good. The scene where The Butcher kills the kid and the father is excellent. The scene where Kyle takes out Mustafa is very good too. The scene where Kyle is sitting before a TV that is turned off and hearing sounds from war is excellent and so is the scene where he is looking at the rear view mirror all tense when he is back in US. The best scene of the movie is the scene where he does not want to shoot the kid who picks up the rocket launcher.

Bradley Cooper who bulked up for the role is very good as Chris Kyle and deserves the Oscar nomination for Best Actor. He is good as someone who genuinely believes that he is protecting his country by fighting in the Iraq War. He is also very good as the soldier who can’t leave the war behind and has trouble adjusting back to the daily life. Sienna Miller is good as his wife.

The movie is very engrossing and it does not bore at all. There are scenes showing how veterans have lost their limbs in the war. The movie tries to show how soldiers have trouble adjusting to normal life after being in a war. Clint Eastwood’s direction is good as usual and he is subtle about many things – the way Kyle expresses amazement when he sees his brother wanting to get out of Iraq or the way Kyle is in denial that there is anything wrong with him after coming back or the way he does not want to shoot the kid who picks up the launcher.

Now if the movie was based on a fictional character then it would have all been fine. But since it is based on Chris Kyle’s life it appears that the movie is glorifying him ignoring all the negative things about him. There is a scene in the movie where he tells that he knows what a Koran is and that person wasn’t carrying a Koran but a weapon which he goes on to describe. But this is what he is supposed to have said according to his own memoir -β€œI don’t shoot people with Korans. I’d like to, but I don’t.” The movie never shows the side of Kyle where he wrote stuff like β€œI hated the damn savages I’d been fighting, I never once fought for the Iraqis. I could give a flying f**k about them.” Link

Chris Kyle lied in his book that he punched Jesse Ventura for allegedly saying the SEALs β€œdeserve to lose a few” in Iraq for which his estate got sued and lost. He falsely claimed that he climbed to the top of the New Orleans Superdome during Hurricane Katrina and sniped to death 30 African-American looters for which there’s no record. Chris Kyle falsely claimed to have shot carjackers. He said in his book that he and fellow snipers had a competition for who could kill the most Iraqis. He boasted about shooting two Iraqis who he believed to be insurgents, at the same time, with one bullet on a moped, and said that that bullet was an efficient use of taxpayer money. Then he later claimed that the IED they were holding somehow disappeared. Link

None of this from the book makes it to the movie. Its all about this righteous American hero who fights for his country and how the war affects him and his personal life. So if one is looking for a entertaining war movie or a movie about a American hero then they will like this movie. But if one is looking for a movie on the real Chris Kyle then this movie is not for them.

    Waiting for Blu-ray .

“But since it is based on Chris Kyle’s life it appears that the movie is glorifying him ignoring all the negative things about him” .That’s what I feared . Have been reading a lot about it .

” But if one is looking for a movie on the real Chris Kyle then this movie is not for them.”

if one is looking for the real chris kyle, then his handwritten autobiography is also not for them either. bcos they always write lies and make themselves a hero in the books

      sputnik 9 years ago

Yeah that’s true. So that’s why you have to also verify if what they wrote in their book is true.

But if they had shown him saying what he said in his autobiography he wont come across a hero.

Ben HUr 1959” – I think the movie has faded with time. The movie doesn’t age well at all. It was a long Boring movie, almost 4 hours. The two things that were awesome (really awesome) in the movie were the Chariot Racing (cannot believe it was shot in 60’s) and Goose-bumping Background Score whenever they show Jesus. Apart from that nothing remotely likable about the film – a film with over acting Galore especially the lead actor, most of the times looked like a girl, almost girlish expressions. Please avoid.

Yes its a very long movie and it used to release quite often in theaters back in the 90s. I watched it in a empty theater and I liked it back then even though it was very long.

Yes the chariot racing scene is awesome and I think that scene looks great even now. I had posted it once as SOTW on another site. The background score is good too.

By lead actor you mean Charlton Heston right? He doesn’t look girly by any means. I don’t remember his acting though as its been such a long time since I watched the movie.

Sunshine – Liked it .I enjoy this kind sci-fi . Its flawed, cliched and far from perfect . But I liked the fact that It didn’t only rely on the spectacular visuals .For me it worked as a drama too .I liked what they tried to do in the finale but writer kinda messed it up. The whole Panbacker thing could have been better.

    The Verdict
A washed-up, ambulance-chasing attorney gets a chance at redemption when his friend tosses him an open-and-shut medical malpractice case. The movie was nominated for 5 Oscars including Best Picture, Best Director and Best Adapted Screenplay. The movie is directed by Sidney Lumet the director of 12 Angry Men.

Very good movie. Its a little slow paced and does not have any background score for most of its running time which adds to the feeling of slowness. I think The Rainmaker is quite similar to this in that both movies have the leading characters as ambulance chasers and in both there is an associate who helps the lead character and both are related to medical cases.

The scene where Frank takes Polaroid pictures of Deborah Ann Kaye was the best scene of the movie. I was reading some IMDB threads after watching the movie and I saw this thread about the scene and someone has explained the scene so brilliantly.

“The drama of that scene is an extension of the Polaroid technology; once you took the shot, and the photograph emerged from the film cartridge, it was a ghostly pale gray, and you had to wait for the chemicals to dry for the image to emerge (this only took 30-60 seconds, as I recall). As the images of Deborah Ann Kaye come into focus when the chemicals dry, the photographs become a proxy for Frank Galvin “seeing” her, really seeing her, and her condition, for the first time, and I think it is at that moment that Galvin’s conscience returns, and he changes back from “ambulance chaser” to dedicated attorney. As the pictures “develop”, so does Galvin’s conscience.” Link

For almost the entire movie nothing goes right for Frank. This makes the movie seem very real. Getting the testimony of one of the witness completely off the records was a bit too much as I think that’s what the entire movie and verdict is based on. Without that testimony the ending is kind of unexpected.

Paul Newman was excellent as the alcoholic attorney Frank Galvin who suddenly decides to so something out of conscience. He deserved the Best Actor Oscar nomination that he got. Charlotte Rampling was very good as Laura. Jack Warden was good as his associate. James Mason was very good as the rival attorney and was nominated for an Oscar for Best Supporting Actor.

“I don’t know some of their names eg another actress,Keaton’s ex wife .they were great too.”

That another actress is Andrea Riseborough. Actress who played Keaton’s ex wife is Amy Ryan who used to be on The Office.

Yeah I had similar opinion after watching it.

“The movie is very good and very engrossing till like the last 20 minutes or so when it became too filmy. It probably should have ended at a point but the movie went on with unnecessary scenes of torpedo attacks. Sam Neill was very good. Alec Baldwin was good except in the last few scenes. Alec imitating Sean Connery when it is supposed to be this intense life and death scene was ridiculous.”

    Birdman
Former cinema superhero Riggan Thomson (Michael Keaton) is mounting an ambitious Broadway production that he hopes will breathe new life into his stagnant career. It’s risky, but he hopes that his creative gamble will prove that he’s a real artist and not just a washed-up movie star. As opening night approaches, a castmate is injured, forcing Riggan to hire an actor (Edward Norton) who is guaranteed to shake things up. Meanwhile, Riggan must deal with his girlfriend, daughter and ex-wife.

Excellent movie. Liked it a lot. Its very long and its not for everyone. I think many will find the movie pretentious and hate the open ending. Alejandro GonzΓ‘lez IΓ±Γ‘rritu’s direction is excellent specially the way the whole movie is shot as if its a one shot take. I hope he wins Best Director at the Oscars. I think the movie will win Best Original Screenplay at the Oscars.

Michael Keaton was excellent as the washed-up movie star who once starred in a comic book franchise Birdman. He deserves his Oscar nomination for Best Actor. The reference to Michael Keaton’s own career in that he starred as Batman is so brilliant. Edward Norton was excellent as the volatile method actor Mike and he deserves his Best Supporting Actor Oscar nomination. Emma Stone was excellent as the daughter Sam and she has also been nominated for Best Supporting Actress at the Oscars. Naomi Watts was very good too. Zach Galifianakis was very good as his attorney and best friend. Andrea Riseborough and Amy Ryan were good too.

The Original Ending of β€˜Birdman’ Featured Johnny Depp Mocking His Biggest Franchise

With it having racked up nearly $60 million worldwide thus far and now being available on VOD, those who’ve wanted to see Alejandro GonzΓ‘lez IΓ±Γ‘rrituβ€˜s Birdman have probably taken the opportunity. Proceeding with spoilers for the film, it’s clear from the first scenes that themes of creative exhaustion in Hollywood abound throughout. While its current ending has proven to be something of a discussion point, there was an original one that was far different, pushing these themes further. Gathering for Jeff Goldsmithβ€˜s annual discussion with Oscar-nominated scribes, Birdmanβ€˜s Alex Dinelaris revealed this early iteration, which was never shot but was intended to include one of Hollywood’s biggest stars.

β€œSo we had one other ending that was satirical,” says Alex Dinelaris. β€œThe other ending was that he shoots himself on the stage. The camera comes around to the audience and their standing ovation β€” all the way around, like Chivo [Emmanuel Lubezki] and Alejandro did the whole time β€” and the segue was back on to the stage and on the stage was like James Lipton or Charlie Rose and Michael [Keaton] was sitting across from him and he’s sort of reading the review. He’s saying, β€˜Oh my God, you got this tremendous review’ and Michael is like, β€˜Yeah.’”

Adding that they would brush past that, he goes on to say, β€œthen the camera prowled like it did the whole film, went back stage through the halls we’ve seen the whole time and we’d get to the dressing room where literally Johnny Depp would be sitting looking in the mirror and putting on his Riggan Thomson wig and then the poster of Pirates of the Caribbean 5 would be in the back. In Jack Sparrow’s voice [it would say], β€˜What the fuck are we doing here, mate?’ It was going to be the satire of the endless loop of that.” Dinelaris concludes with a laugh, β€œWe couldn’t get Johnny Depp or even the poster.”

While we couldn’t imagine Disney would have ever agreed to this, it certainly would have been a perfect capper, despite taking away from Thomson’s conclusion, however ambiguous it was.

    Labor Day
On a fateful Labor Day weekend, giving a lift to a bloodied man turns into a life-changing event for a divorced single mother and her 13-year-old son.

Its a love story or a love saga. Most of it is completely unbelievable. The movie is set in the late 80s but looks like it is set in the 1940s. The cops are on the lookout for the escaped prisoner erecting roadblocks and they have his posters on telephone polls and his picture is flashed on TV screens. But he is playing baseball with the family in the backyard and helping them fix the car, the gutters on the roof and so on. And the in just three day Kate’s character decides she is in love with him and wants to move to Canada with him.

Kate Winslet was good but her performance was similar to her role in Revolutionary Road. Josh Brolin was good. Gattlin Griffith was good as the son. Clark Gregg was good as Kate’s ex-husband.

Sunset Blvd 1950 – This should have been one of the best movie of its kind in those days because when I watched this movie, I could sense so many other movies that got inspired from it. The actress has done a terrific job and absolutely in character. Never felt bored, very intriguing with excellent narration as well.

American Heist – I never thought this movie would be a story based until I watched it. In trailer it was shown as some great heist movie. It definitely connected and is emotional. Liked it very much except the climax part which could have been more convincing and better ending. Yet it is a very good watch.

Big Hero 6 – Now a days you can hardly find any good story in animation movies. They are being made just to cater children below 10 years and not for adult audience any more. Gone are the days of Grave of Fireflies, Whisper of the heart, princess mononoke etc… There is not good enough story nor it has any innovative animation. Only a good time pass stuff which looks cliched and repetitive.

Watched first two part of Harry Potter .Have seen the first part long ago . Haven’t read the book too .Better late than never .Enjoyed both parts . I think I will continue and finish all parts .

Hotel Rwanda -The true story is very powerful & devastating . So the potential was high .I just feel the director couldn’t utilize the material well Its still a good movie. But because of the power of true story not direction.I don’t know if its a fair comparison or not but with a almost similar story Spielberg made a class apart Schindler’s list . Some of the scenes are very moving .Specially when Don and the other guy was driving back to hotel and there were corpses on the road . Also when Don returned with the general and couldn’t find his wife and children . Liked the climax too when Don and his wife found her sister’s children. Don cheadle was fantastic .

    The Theory of Everything
This is the extraordinary story of one of the world’s greatest living minds, the renowned astrophysicist Stephen Hawking, who falls deeply in love with fellow Cambridge student Jane Wilde. Once a healthy, active young man, Hawking received an earth-shattering diagnosis at 21 years of age. With Jane fighting tirelessly by his side, Stephen embarks on his most ambitious scientific work, studying the very thing he now has precious little of – time. Together, they defy impossible odds, breaking new ground in medicine and science, and achieving more than they could ever have dreamed.

The movie is based on Jane Hawking’s memoir. It just skims through Stephen Hawking’s scientific achievements and those scenes almost feel cliche. Its more a movie on how Hawking’s condition kept deteriorating and how his wife was unwavering in support of her husband through all that.

The movie is good but its not great. The Theory of Everything and The Imitation Game feel somewhat similar in that both movies are about brilliant men and are set in Britain and have released the same year and are vying for the Oscars.

The movie is more or less accurate. There are some cinematic liberties taken with the timelines.

How Accurate Is The Theory of Everything?

    https://www.historyvshollywood.com/reelfaces/theory-of-everything/

Eddie Redmayne was excellent as Stephen Hawking. The resemblance is uncanny and I think he completely nailed the part. He was so good that one can mistake him to be the real Hawking. Stephen Hawking himself providing his voice in the later part of the movie added even more authenticity. I think he will win the Oscar for Best Actor unless the Academy decides they do not want to give it to a physically disabled character. Felicity Jones was excellent too as the wife. The only thing was that she looked a bit too cute for the part. The scene where she shows him the letters to read was excellent and she and Eddie were both brilliant in that scene.

    • cr7 9 years ago

“The movie is good but its not great” . I have similar views on the movie . I think Eddie and felicity elevated the movie . It will be either keaton or eddie for Oscars .I think academy will prefer a character with physical disability .So Eddie is the front-runner IMO .

My most favorite scene is where Hawking lost the ability to speak and Jane tried to talk with him through spelling board . Brilliant scene and extraordinary performance .

      • Author
        sputnik 9 years ago

It can work both ways. Some might dismiss it off as one more character based on physical disability too. I hope Eddie wins though. I loved Michael Keaton’s performance too.

I liked Benedict Cumberbatch in The Imitation Game and Bradley Cooper in American Sniper too. The only performance that has been nominated that I did not like much was Steve Carell in the Foxcatcher.

“My most favorite scene is where Hawking lost the ability to speak and Jane tried to talk with him through spelling board . Brilliant scene and extraordinary performance .”

Yeah that was the best scene. I was referring to the same scene in my comment.

Watched Badlapur. Its watchable but quite long at 2 hr 13 min. The movie did not have enough meat in it to be that long. It could have been a 90 min movie at max but it dragged. There were no real twists. Its a very linear straight forward narrative. A non linear screenplay would have made the movie interesting.

They should not have shown what happened in the car in the first scene itself. Some scenes were good like the carjack scene and the cuckolding scene. There is some misogyny in the movie as some reviews have pointed out. Huma Qureshi’s character is almost forced into sex by Varun and what happens to Radhika Apte’s character was also unnecessary. One flashback scene was good but the other flashback scenes just did not add anything to the movie.

Varun was ok but this role required a better actor. I think Sidharth Malhotra brought out the angst better in Ek Villain in a similar role. Nawaz had a meaty role and he was very good in it. Yami Gautam looked very pretty in the few scenes she had. Huma Qureshi looked pretty and was good. Vinay Pathak was good. Radhika Apte looked pretty and she acted well. Divya Dutta was ok. The lady who played Nawaz’s mother was good.

This is definitely not in the league of Sriram Raghavan’s earlier movies Ek Hasina Thi or Johnny Gaddar.

    • cr7 9 years ago

Agree that Its a bit long . I started to get bored before Vinay Pathak’s entry . But after his entry it gets very interesting .

“Varun was ok but this role required a better actor”

Black Mirror – Excellent series that has no connection whatsoever to succeeding episodes. Most of the episodes are no less than a movie with excellent screenplay, new and different scripts, execution level is of top notch. Loved most of the Episodes. Thanks cr for recommendation. Highly Recommended!!!

Badlapur – One of the best revenge thriller to come out of Bollywood. Loved the beginning and the ending. Nawaz literally fucked up Varun even though varun was excellent. I think Varun looked immature to the role and involving the known actor such as Ajay, Srk, Akshay would have just elevated the excitement to another level. Loved every character specially the partners wife, she was incredibly hot and brilliant. Highly Recommended!!!

The Grand Budapest Hotel – A simple comic relief movie, nothing exceptional nor uninteresting.

The Interview – Okayish, nothing great except few comical scenes and swearing in by the actors.

The Hundred Foot journey – Liked it very much, its about a tale of the Chef of Indian Origin going big in Europe. Loved everything about the romantic part as it was very less. Didn’t like the part of Climax where the actor goes to some innovative technological advance restaurant. Recommended!!!

Wild Card – I hardly miss Jason stathom movies and his stylish hand to hand action. Love his style and waiting for fast and Furious 7 only to see his role. I liked the movie, it was good but most will not like it.

Horrible Bosses 2 – Not bad. Wasn’t funny initially but the last 30-40 minutes were good .The three guys have a good chemistry .They were pretty good. Jamie fox scenes were funny. A good time pass movie .

When the Game Stands Tall – Don’t know what to make of it as it was entertaining in parts as well as cliched. It had nothing special and the emotional connect was missing but had a feel good ending.

Hunger Games: The Mocking Jay part 1: Again don’t know what to make of it as first half of the movie looked too rehearsed and deliberate but second half was good and entertaining in parts. Loved the song sung by Jennifer Lawrence. Gave solid goosebumps…

    Ali
Boxing legend Muhammad Ali stirred controversy when he ruled the ring, as shown in this biopic that also frames the social climate of his heyday.

Had watched the movie when it came out back in 2001. Had thought that the movie ended abruptly with a fight back then instead of covering his whole life.

Re watched it after a long time. The movie was good in parts. The boxing scenes were very good. His fight with the US govt for refusing to fight in the Vietnam war part was very good. Ali trash talking his opponents and his scenes with the interviewer Howard Cosell were very entertaining.

But the whole Nation of Islam cult part, the Malcolm X part and his multiple marriages/affairs part just did not add anything to the movie. And the movie just dragged so much once it got to Zaire for the fight with George Foreman.

Will Smith was excellent as Ali and deserved the Oscar nomination that he got for Best Actor. He was so spot on as Ali and one can compare his scenes with Ali’s actual interviews. Jamie Foxx was good and funny in some scenes but somewhat irritating in other scenes. Jon Voight was excellent as Howard Cosell with a toupee. I did not even recognize that it was him. He deserved the Supporting Actor Oscar nomination that he got. Jada Pinkett Smith looked pretty as Ali’s first wife. Nona Gaye was good as his second wife.
