Movies You Watched This Month – December 2012

OMG: Oh My God! The plot is inspired from the movie The Man Who Sued God. Some scenes are very good like the scene where Paresh sells the idol or the scene where Akshay talks about his latest photo not being updated on Facebook or the milk scene. Paresh Rawal proving Goving Namdeo is not a Siddh Purush scene was excellent. The paralysis track seemed unnecessary. Govinda Govinda song looked totally out of place in the movie. The movie does resemble a stage play/TV serial. Some TV scenes and the way people reacted after them looked like from a Raju Hirani movie. The production values are really bad in some scenes like the scene of his destroyed shop during earthquake. It reminded me of earthquake scenes from Waqt 😉 Paresh Rawal was good but his role/performance is similar to roles he has done before. Liked Akshay Kumar more. He was very good. Not sure which Baba Mithun was trying to imitate but his mannerisms seemed gay. Govind Namdeo hammed like anything and he was extremely annoying. Dialogues were excellent. The message against rituals and asking people to donate money to poor instead of temples and dargahs is excellent. Movie deserves praise just for being so bold in a country like India. Definitely recommended.

English Vinglish is about Shashi, a housewife who runs a laddu business from home. Shashi suffers from low self esteem due to her inability to speak/understand English. Liked the scene where Sridevi meets the school principal or the scenes between her and the French guy. The scene where she tries to drive away her sister so that she could go to the class was very good. Also liked that her English speech at end was like that of a newly learned person and not fluent. Her being told that she cannot take sweets at airport was nonsense. Amitabh translating English dialogues scene was copied from SRK’s scene from Yes Boss which itself was probably copied from For Love or Money. While that was in a room here it was ridiculous with Amitabh doing that on a plane. The smartass answers during Sridevi’s visa interview by the Indian guy or Amitabh’s immigration check were ridiculous. The cafeteria scene was another stupid scene with the receptionist demanding she answer her greeting and demanding a Thank You. The laddu falling scene was so deliberate. The movie had every stereotype that you can think of – the non english speaking Indian housewife, the MCP husband, the gay English teacher, the French cook, the Pakistani driver, the ‘Madrasi’ Software Engineer, the Spanish nanny, the Asian salon worker. English class scenes reminded me of Mind Your Language. The English teacher coming home and passing her was another BS. Sridevi was excellent and she was perfect in almost every scene. Amitabh was totally annoying and irritating in his cameo. Rest of the cast ranged from decent to good. Liked only the title song. All songs sounded the same with techno and auto tune except for last song. Despite the issues movie was still good because of Sridevi.

Memories of Murder is based on the true story of South Korea’s first known serial murders, which took place between 1986 and 1991. Some scenes are very good like the scene where they find out about how the serial killer requests a particular song or the scene where they chase down one suspect or the scene where they find out the suspect had soft hands. The scenes with the last suspect were excellent. One of the cops trying to check out “hairless” men or going to astrologer scenes seemed stupid. May be they were intended as comedy. The Chief kicking one of the officers scene looked totally ridiculous. The movie is very engrossing but it has a open ending which may not be liked by some. Its more a movie about how the investigation affects the three detectives. Two of them pretty much interchange personalities by the end of the investigation.

Watched a marathi movie where Mohan Joshi was the lead – has two wives and typical comedy. Liked it in pieces because of Mohan Joshi’s acting.

  2. hithere 11 years ago

Thanks. Agree with views of three movies.

EV – The movie used all kinds of stereotypes to fight a stereotype.

  3. Ritz 11 years ago

Agree that OMG was like a stage play.

But it was kind of required – as people need to be spoonfed in India.

It was bang on on rituals.

I did not like the bits where Paresh Rawal blames temples ppl for taking money for prasad’s laddu. It seemed unnecessary. Basically Temple also has to run on money – it needs maintenance – its another matter that I have not seen temples being maintained well anywhere in India except Tamilnadu. But it needs money. Agree that they get money in terms of donations but all temples dont get huge money. Dont agree when people oppose to temples charging for prasad – when they themselves go to temples and crowd them and make the place dirty by spitting/spilling food/leaving lot of kachra like papers, plastic, water bottles etc. I mean if you are so spiritual and all – then why go and crowd the temple ? You go there by spending hundreds in a bus or car and then object to 20/30rs prasad which they charge.

The paralysis track is for not to hurt anyone who believe in god. It kills movie’s boldness factor.

  4. Baba Ji 11 years ago

Good reviews sputnik . I have not seen only EV out of three. I have the film on my laptop but havent been able to convince myself to see it.

The beauty of OMG lies in its simplicity only. Serenzy on another thread is confusing the tone of the film with its intent. The films intent is very bold and the way it launches a staunch diatribe on the stupid rituals/practices/idol worships and so on is awe-inspiring. The director knew that showing all this can hurt many ppl so he smartly kept the whole tone of the film like a comedy film (or SAB -TV-esque as some ppl suggest). But the film goes far beyond that tone if you analyse.Credit goes to his intelligent way of filmmaking.

agree with you on MoM too. I was expecting talaash to be like MoM.

    • Author
      sputnik 11 years ago

There is nothing wrong with Comedy film tone. I think movie has stage play feel because it is adapted from stage play and they could have done better on that front. Production values are low because of low budget but then they probably must have thought that the movie may not be a big hit or run into any issues. I think the movie deserved better production values.

      • Baba Ji 11 years ago

yes. This films success should give confidence to akshay that more films with novel and edgy concepts like this are made.He also needs to take some more risks personally in his own films.Special 26 might be good.

JTHJ – 2/5…It could have been a decent movie had they done away with masala elements and some trimming. Most of the dialogues were logical and tonally very real but then they do Sir Jesus(uneven) so often. They actually didn’t need that retrogade Amnesia to come to climax of the movie. I think Anuska’s stint at army camp could have been handled more maturely. There are other immature stuff but most bollywood movies are laced with such cliches.

Brave – 3/5, Good for kids 6-10 years. Nothings special but well made. Story ofa girl who doesn’t want to get married.

Moonrise Kingdom – 4/5 (But people may dislike it). It is one of the more beautiful love stories and as I suggested elsewhere a better Love Story than what we have seen in Bollywood in last 2-3 years.

Prometheus – 3/5 ( all marks for concept and visuals)..It could have been so much better movie but they made a thriller instead of more intriguing premise of our existence

    Expendable 2 – 2/5. Time pass.

The Game (Rewatch) – 5/5. I love this movie along with Nine Queens.

The Raven – 3/5 – Decent thriller. I Liked the setting of the movie.

The Amazing Spider-Man – 3/5, Even though a quick reboot it was nicely made and made spider man more human like batman/Ironman.

Black Rain – Masala thriller. The movie is made like desi movie. Hero can do anything. Saw it for Ridley Scott and M Douglas.

K-19: The Widowmaker – decent watch. Could have been better. I like Submarine movies.

13B – decent watch. Not a fan of horror genre but was decently made.

On netflix – IQ, The List, Without Evidence, Jennifer 8 (you may check thriller..climax could have been better) , Conception.

      @hithere

I know you like talking less, but these ratings dont mean anything. You can try and write atleast a line or two about ur views on the movies. That will help.

    • Baba Ji 11 years ago

hithere – expendables is a series i have been curious to see for a while. can you tell what expendables is about and what was wrong in expendables 2 in your words?

btw, 13B is the last horror film i liked.

      • hithere 11 years ago

I haven’t seen part 1. You can see E2 but only if you have nothing to watch. It is like Avenger with all the action heroes. After sometime you get bored with monotonous action.

        • Baba Ji 11 years ago

yes that is a problem with many hw actioners and many action films in general. So seems I wont miss anything by not seeing it 😀

I liked it. I haven’t seen Talaash but it seems similar in subject but it was just dramatic.

ps – You need to know the 1919 baseball scandal background for the movie.

Had liked The Game when I saw it a few years ago even though the whole thing is a bit far fetched. Agree that 13B was decent. I think I had Moonrise Kingdom in my queue but looks like it is not available for online viewing anymore.

Coming to submarine movies – I don’t know if you have seen this but I saw this German movie Das Boot many years ago and liked it. I think I had seen U571 and liked that one too.

    Ritz bro,
specifically for you since you like regional movies.
Obviously, anyone else who is not averse to regional cinema – please check out these movies.

2 Bengali movies by the same director Srjit Mykherjee
    .
Baise Shrabon – It is a psychological thriller about a serial murderer..One of the best movies of this type I have ever seen, a MUST MUST watch. Prosenjit Chatterjee gives the performance of a lifetime and so does Goutom Ghose while Parambroto (Kahaanii fame) also provides good support. IMDB LINK – https://www.imdb.com/title/tt2075108/

Hemlock society – It is about a society which helps people who want to suicide by showing them the proper way to suicide…never heard any concept like this. IMDB LINK – https://www.imdb.com/title/tt2266600/

    • Ritz 11 years ago

Thanks, Sounds interesting. Wil try to catch these soon. Do you know if subtitles are available on torrent etc?

      • narad_muni 11 years ago

Subtitles are there..the copies I have do have subtitles

        • cr7 11 years ago

heard lots of good things about baishe srabon.liked the songs.gonna watch this soon.

about hemlock society .i liked it .smart film. some scenes looked like stage play though.specially in the suicide school. anyway okay with the mood of the film. performances were good . specially parambrata and cameo of soumitro .

          • narad_muni 11 years ago

cr7, Baise Srabon is the bestest best film I have seen in recent times. I dont know if u r a Bengali but there are lot of abuses in Bengali like mc bc types and I m not sure how the impact ll b with subtitles.
Hemlock society deserves applause for the subject itself. The scenes I belive looked like stage play coz I believe that the director wanted those scenes to look like that

3 (Mooonu) – awesome movie… First movie of dhanush tht i saw n he is just brilliant as an actor… Shruti hassan is hell of an actress but can’t believe she was the one in ‘luck’ opp imran khan. First half is very sweet sugar coated gudda guddi type which actually is real in real world n then comes reel cinema in second half with tragic end… Absolutely loved the film n will give 4.5/5

Going by the book – another korean movie but b4 saying anything i want to say tht they make very unique kind of movies… In the city, bank robbery has increased manifold n people hav lost confidence on police department. The new chief of police has been allocated to bring down the crime of robbery n he takes a very unique concept to gain confidence of public by implementing a training programme tht goes horribly wrong… Its a simple comedy drama with a very unique concept. 3/5

Talaash – had written my views on various threads related to talaash. 4/5

    ‘Margin Call’

Margin Call is a 2011 American Independent
    Film directed by J.C. Chandor.

The film takes place over a 36-hour period
at a Wall Street Investment Firm and highlights the the Financial Crisis of 2007–2008.

Mostly Shot[80% of it] inside an Office, the Film is a Gripping and Engaging Take on How the Firm Overcomes the Crisis in a Span of 1 Night.

The ‘Actual’ Problem though is Never Quite Simplified to the Lay Man Viewer which is Related to Finance/Mortage/Credit etc.

It’s One of the ‘Complex’ Movies I have Watched[Like Moneyball] but I Ended Up Liking it anyways and I did Try to Understnd about the Happenings Potrayed in the Movie, by Reading abt the Crisis in Detail on GOOGLE.

All the Actors were Apt in their Roles and the Settings/Treatment of the Movie was ‘Real Life Like’.

Liked Jeremy Irons, Paul Bettany, Demi Moore and Zachary Quinto in their Respective Roles the Most.

Watch Out for the Engaging Boardroom Sequences.

    ……

    Wanted[Angelina Jolie]

Chutya Movie… Only Liked that Bullet Changing it’s Path Thingy

Though the story is different – there is a spirit angle here and woman talking to them and helping a father reach his dead son. and son’s spirit (fake spirit ) says he didnt feel any pain and he rests below the sea water now and he is peaceful.

Hitchcock’s commentary before and after the serials – all shows is brilliant.

    I saw Spring Summer Fall… – a Korean movie.
It was recommended here by people on FS thread on Korean movies.

Actually, this is the first Korean movie which disappointed me.
Got bored like hell and couldnt finish it.

    @Baba,

In Talaash Aamir does not believe in ghosts and the ghost shows up and he starts believing in ghosts/aatma thing.

In OMG Paresh Rawal does not believe in God and God shows up and he starts believing in God.

From an atheist point of view, God existing and coming on earth is itself ridiculous. To them OMG is promoting superstition too because believing in God is itself superstition according to them.

    • Baba Ji 11 years ago

This is where you are wrong.Ghost is not a parallel of God. Read any religious scripture. Infact ghosts are not recognised in any religion as far as i know. Some religions accept existence of spirits . But they are not alter ego of God.God has no parallel. He is the Creator.Believing in God is completely different than believing in Ghosts.

“God existing and coming on earth is itself ridiculous” LOL! check bored coment on my thread. its a satirical take on the religious issue.

      • Author
        sputnik 11 years ago

Yes its a satire but they did show God in the movie.

Anyways just because Talaash has a ghost it does not become a bad movie. Talaash can be bashed using other reasons – a ghost who can do it herself but wants Aamir to do her job, a ghost who can make herself visible/invisible to someone according to convenience/screenplay.

And the revenge thing is also not justified properly since she was not murdered but died in a accident. May be they should have shown Nikhil as some psycho who pushed off from the speeding car. And Nikhil should have died in that same spot in another car accident instead of showing him in his house. That would have also explained multiple accidents happening at same place dialogue.

        • Baba Ji 11 years ago

I have not bashed talaash on the ghost angle in my post. I only said its alter ego of OMG that it endorses stupid rituals/woo doo. Akshay in OMG is not God, he is messenger of God,He says it himself in one scene.

Karthik calling karthik- a very well made movie and manages to seek your attention. Liked the climax and suspense. Minimum loopholes. 4/5

nick of time- while i was discussing KCK with my friend he suggested me this movie. Liked it too. 3.5/5

ek doctor ki maut- this was posted in TFF. Superb movie and brilliantly acted by pankaj kapoor. SUPERLIKE 4.5/5

Josh- few days back it was telecasted Zoom. Its one of my fav childhood movie. The movie still retains its charm and attitude. Apun bola still manages to make me sing along. Made me remind the days when i was 7-8 yrs old. We used to form a group. Each member used to tie a handkerchief around their forehead wear jackets and gloves and ride bicycles in colony singing hum bhi hai josh me. Maxi was a rage in those times.

    @Reddemon,

Glad you liked Ek Doctor Ki Maut and Pankaj Kapur in it.

Had watched Karthik Calling Karthik last month and I had commented

“Karthik Calling Karthik was good but a bit slow paced. Was able to guess the twist part very easily as there have been quite a few movies involving that very same twist. Liked the way that he gets back at the boss and the way he woos Deepika. The call that he gets in presence of the psychiatrist was very good. Farhan acted really well and Deepika was not bad. She looked very pretty.”

watched safety not guaranteed .sweet ,little film. it is kind of sci fi but more of a romantic comedy. i liked the emotional angles in the film .liked the character of the boss also the indian guy.the girl looked pretty .well performed by most of them . definitely a good watch .its short still the pace is not super fast.takes time, grows on u. worth a watch .

and if anyone here seen it , he did time travel once and saved his gf,right?. but belinda was never interested in him. so wanted to go again and try to win her. or he was just plain lying about the death .

After seeing the eatings of 5/5 by rks i

Watched “the game” – mind fucking film that fucks u till the end… But i never understood the outcome of the game. The t-shirt tht said abt his brother was not even remotely mattered to how the game was played nor the true intentions… I mean what realisation he had from this game? As a film it was truly a thriller till the end bur what i didnt understood is the motive of the game coz if the motive was to realise his brother abt his selfish & egoistic nature, attitude then i dont think it has achieved the motive… 3.5/5 just for fucking my mind. Or rks can help me understand it better coz to begin with film was very slow initially.

The bourne legacy – I thought its the continuation of jason bourne journey but was shocked to see the totally new different character of Renner… He could have easily got into the shoes of matt damon but i think director played safe or may be they are planning to bring damon n renner together in the next flick of bourne if ever made or may continue with the present character of renner… Although it seemed to me as if i was watching bourn series part one i ended up liking the movie purely for its good action, stunts n attitude of renner. He was no different to matt damon n the bourne legacy may not be as engaging or entertaining or thrilling as part 2&3 but it did successfully carry the legacy of bourne series… Renner is very good as number 5

Nine Queens is in which language?

Did not like Joseph Gordon-Levitt. He is more of a sidekick. Every time I see him I am reminded of Third Rock from the sun. Bruce Willis was good but doing his usual stuff.

And if you are going to set a movie in the future why set it in 2044 when most of the present people would still be alive. Its like they wanted to show that flying bike and telekinetic nonsense but at the same time show Kansas just like it is now because of low budget.

withnail and i- its perfect. loved it. witty and intelligent dialogues , smart script , flawlessly performed . and the way it ended . totally worth it .

    • Ritz 11 years ago

That movie is on my list for long. Aamir had recommended it on his blog. Its high time i see it.

      Aamir on it:

      Withnail, Ignatius and I.
      Sep,10,2009

Kiran and I saw what we thought was one of the funniest films we have seen in our lives. Its called Withnail And I. It is the most wacked out and bizarrely funny film I have ever seen.

Warning. I’m not sure I should recommend it though. I am not sure how many people will find this kind of humour appealing. I believe it wasn’t very successful at the box office when it released, so judging by that not many in the public liked it. But for those who want to experiment with very unusual humour in cinema, go for it.

Its a story about these 2 out of work actors and their mad, funny and tragic lives. Exceedingly well written, brilliantly performed and superbly executed. Its a huge cult success. Written and directed by Bruce Robinson. British.

Watching Withnail And I reminded me of one of my favourite books, A Confederacy Of Dunces, written by John Kennedy Toole. Again a piece of work that I find supremely funny and tragic. Absolutely brilliant. A must read, but again I don’t know how many of you will like it. Have read the book twice and plan to read it once every couple years.

The book was actually published after the death of the author and he did not live to see the huge success that it became. In fact the book would never have been published had it not been for Toole’s mother who found a carbon copy of the manuscript left in the house following Toole’s suicide in 1969 at the young age of 31. Toole’s mother took this manuscript to various publishers in attempt to get it published without any success until she took it to Walker Percy, an author, and literally forced him to read it. Percy explains in his foreword that he started the manuscript with great reservation but got sucked into the book and loved it. The book was published in 1980, 11 years after Toole’s death, and became a cult classic, and then later a mainstream success.

So much brilliance in this world. So inspiring.

      What fun.

Watched Snatch. Liked it initially with the dialogues and all but after a point it had too many characters and it kind of dragged. Hate it when they are dumb characters in a movie and one can tell from a mile that their stupidity will have a big effect later. And the dog was added to the movie only for one reason and I knew what it would do in the end.

Some scenes and dialogues were good though like Bullet-Tooth Tony’s dialogues when he is pointed a gun by the black guys or Brick Top’s dialogues about being a pig farm owner.

But Guy Ritchie is clearly inspired by Quentin Tarantino – the cursing, the long smart ass dialogues and multiple tracks.

I thought I had seen Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels but may be not. I think I was confusing with another movie which I do not remember now.

    • narad_muni 11 years ago

No I had the subtitles on. I had seen the trailer once and I knew that there is no way anyone can understand what the hell Brad was talking without subtitles.

Saw Lawless – one of the better movies this year for sure.
This is a Texan style action drama with excellent performance by Tom Hardy!
Also, the background score and the music is excellent.

The movie could have been great but the final portions of this movie did not live up to the expectations.
Still, a very good movie and highly recommended.

Watched Cavite. Aamir is definitely copied from this though Anurag denied it once on PFC. He said that they bought the rights of Cavite because they found the similarity later.

The lead actor’s acting was bad in some scenes. The cut finger and tongue scenes were bad. The girlfriend track was also bad. Showing that everyone is involved and the guy controlling everything through the phone seemed too incredulous in Aamir but here that part works because we do not know much about the Philippines.

    Spoiler Alert
The ending is different from Aamir. He is forced to leave the bomb in a church but he wants to die there. But he is forced by the caller to leave and we are shown through another phone call that he was reunited with his family. He just has to live with what he did.

this is a better ending than aamir. both cinematically and logically. aamir ending was too cynical.

Watched Yes Man – One of the best Jim Carrey’s movie after Eternal sunshine of spotless mind… he was in his character and i bet no one could justify the “dead body” act of jim other than him.. Looked as if that was a statue…

Anyways, its all about change of your attitude and perception from pessimism into optimism by allowing and embracing the challenges that life throws up on every walk you take forward. The serious lonely stubborn and careless jim is suggested to attend one of the seminar or conference show of “yes man” by one of his old acquaintance and how his life changes after he attends the seminar… it was well enacted by complete cast and crew with lit bit of ott expressions here and there (off-course Jim Carrey’s movie) and I loved the leading lady (Zooey Deschanel)… It was pure fun and entertaining and you can gain or extract much of inspiration to be happy and carefree being subconsciously careful about your decisions…. 4/5

Just watched Johnny Gaddar. Had seen only bits of it before. Liked it a lot. One of the best thrillers in Hindi cinema – the screenplay was very good. It seemed a bit low budget in some scenes.

The tribute thing about Parwana and Johnny Mera Naam was done done well.

Dharmendra was very good in his small role. Vinay Pathak, Zakir Hussain, Rimi Sen, Ashwini Khalsekar were all good. Govind Namdeo was very good too. Neil Nitin Mukesh was good and he should have won the Best debut award that year not Ranbir for his overacting in Saawariya.

    • Baba Ji 11 years ago

now that it has got your stamp of approval,i will try to watch it.

” Neil Nitin Mukesh was good and he should have won the Best debut award that year not Ranbir for his overacting in Saawariya.”

he has done some interesting films, except players! Aa dekhe zara had a decent climax.

    • Ritz 11 years ago

Johnny Gaddar is a reverse thriller. You know from beginning who is the bad guy.

I think Neil had blank expressions but they suited the role perfectly. As director used him in a nice way. He was like a guy who was hiding something so the expressions were right.

      • Baba Ji 11 years ago

ritz – i had similar feeling for kat in ett. Her blank expressions worked . atleast from her face, one cudnt guess what she is going to do.

        • Ritz 11 years ago

        sputnik 11 years ago

Agree with you completely on it being a reverse thriller and Neil’s acting. I think Neil was perfect as the innocent looking but constantly scared of being caught guy.

The thing I liked most or what I think was different from other thrillers is that he keeps getting caught but each time he manages to escape by some coincidence.

I did not understand why he confesses to Prakash though. He could have let Prakash kill Shardul and then do what he did with Prakash after that.

        • hithere 11 years ago

If movie is good most of the actors look good. How often do we find a movie that is good and didn’t like acting of leads?

          • Author
            sputnik 11 years ago

hmm well its usually the case that acting by leads is good in good movies. But it happens with me some times that I like a movie but not the acting.

For example I liked Slumdog Millionaire but I thought Dev Patel was miscast and they should have chosen a regular Indian guy.

I liked Raajneeti but I did not like Ranbir or Ajay in it. I liked DDLJ back then but did not like SRK’s acting in 2nd half of it. I liked 3 Idiots back then but did not like Aamir’s acting in it.

I remember liking Yeh Dillagi back then but hating Kajol for her overacting. I liked HHRPK too back then but did not like Juhi in it.

          • hithere 11 years ago

Well you may not like thier acting but it is sufficient for the part they are doing.

        • Ritz 11 years ago

          Saw the movie again yesterday.

“The thing I liked most or what I think was different from other thrillers is that he keeps getting caught but each time he manages to escape by some coincidence.

I did not understand why he confesses to Prakash though. He could have let Prakash kill Shardul and then do what he did with Prakash after that.”

          Agree on both counts.

Watched In the Mood for Love. Have mixed feelings on this one. Liked the movie initially and loved the whole ambiance and the acting by the leads but after a point it became too slow for me and it could not keep me engrossed.

I thought its a movie about platonic love but reading one of the IMDB threads about deleted scenes it does not seem so.

No. I watched it on Netflix so I don’t think it gives option of watching alternate ending unlike DVDs. But I just watched the alternate ending on youtube and it had no English subtitles and it seems a bit farfetched that he will run into her there and looks like they still don’t end up together. So doesn’t make sense for them to run into each other again.

Thats plain wrong. 2046 is a different movie. I dont see any connection.

        • Ritz 11 years ago

Here is non-english version of it.

I liked the alternative version also very much.

The very fact that they dont meet again and it more like a real life scenario of an affair – i liked it.
It doesnt seem far fetched. In fact it seems more real than the way actual movie ended. Their relationship has kind of cooled off….atleast from her perspective. And he is OK with it. It was kind of accepting reality on part of him.

If you get the english translation for the scene it will be good.

Watched Mujhse Fraaandship Karoge. Was enjoyable time pass movie. First scene was straight out of American Pie and the movie kind of reminded me of other Hollywood teen romantic comedies.

It had the usual Bollywood college thing where students are just having fun all the time. I don’t think they showed the classroom even once or did they? Anyways the college work was about doing a show. They should have shown a few more couples – its like they showed two couples and then they forgot about it.

Performances by Saqib Saleem, Saba Azad, Nishant Dahiya and Tara D’Souza were good. While I was watching the movie I kept thinking I have seen that Tara D’Souza aka Malvika in some other movie before. Turns out that she was the girl Sheetal in The Angrez.

    So Sputnik,

JTHJ v/s MFK – The Better Movie?

And Which One btwn MFK, JTYJN & Punchnama.

    • Ritz 11 years ago

      @Serenzy, havent seen MFK

But there is no comparison between JTYJN and Punchnama.

Punchnama is altogether a different movie mostly because of its second half. It is more close to life and more hilarious and less dreamy. I consider it as one of the best movies ever made on relationships.

JTYJN was more about college romance. It was enjoyable yes…but thats about it.

    • Author
      sputnik 11 years ago

      @Serenzy,

MFK wasn’t trying to be a epic romantic movie like JTHJ. It was a regular romantic teen comedy. And as far as entertainment is concerned MFK is way better.

I did not like JTYJN much. I found that girl who was being narrated the whole story very irritating. I also did not like the multiple narration and the cat funeral and the Prateik & rat track. The whole falling for friend after he/she was engaged to someone else was already seen in Nuvve Kavvali which was remade as Tujhe Meri Kasam. Even the domineering fiancee was from DCH. Naseer talking from picture frame was from the TV serial Hum Paanch. I liked the Manjara & parents track and the last scene at the airport was funny.

I have only seen parts of Punchnama. Now that you reminded me of that I will watch it soon.

      @Baba,

Don’t raise your hopes. There is no girl in the American Pie inspired first scene 😉

Watched theatrical version of Donnie Darko. The movie did not do well but its a cult movie now. It was engrossing and intriguing and had a very good soundtrack. But it made no sense whatsoever. The ending was WTF.

After watching the movie I read about the differences between the theatrical version and the director’s cut. The director’s cut has more clues and explanation but I think its still mumbo jumbo.

Also watched the Italian movie The Son’s Room. The movie was the winner of the Palme d’Or at the 2001 Cannes Film Festival. It about a couple coming to term with their son’s death. The son dies in a diving accident (not shown). The scene of Aamir imagining different scenarios to avoid his son’s accident from Talaash is inspired/copied from this movie. I found the movie very boring and I could not even understand what was going on.

Watched Savages. It was good and engrossing but not in the league of Pulp Fiction and it does not have the trademark non linear screenplay of Quentin Tarantino 😉 Synopsis: Pot growers Ben and Chon face off against the Mexican drug cartel who kidnapped their shared girlfriend.

Movie was quite gory with parts of it like a snuff film. I liked the first ending it made more sense with the rest of the movie. The second one was more of a happy ending but it makes sense with taking John Travolta for that role and the dialogue that he was always ahead of them. Performances by Taylor Kitsch, Blake Lively, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Benicio Del Toro, John Travolta and Salma Hayek were good.

Just watched the Oscar winning Argentinian movie The Secret in Their Eyes. I was expecting a suspense thriller but it was more of a love story. I thought there would be a big twist in the end about the killer. There was a twist in the end though but of a different kind. Liked the ending and the dialogues about “passion”. It was a bit slow paced but the ending kind of made up for it.

The love track was good. Liked the scene where she goes to close the door hoping he will disclose his feelings but he talks about the case. Also liked the train scene but did not understand why he is always scared despite knowing that she loves him too.

Liked the actress Soledad Villamil a lot. She was very expressive even without speaking. She was brilliant in that taunting scene. Ricardo Darín the lead actor and the actor who played husband were good too.

Just watched the French movie The Intouchables based on a true story. Excellent movie. Loved it. I think it will definitely get nominated for an Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film. I think the director did a great job at making an entertaining movie about a disabled person. François Cluzet who was the lead in the thriller Tell No One acted really well as the quadriplegic. Omar Sy was excellent as the caretaker. Performances by others were very good too. Cinematography was very good.

There were a lot excellent scenes like the first scene, the scene where he is flirting with Magalie or the art exhibition scene or the paragliding scene and the final scene. Would recommend the movie to everyone.

Also watched Arbitrage. It was engrossing but it kind of reminded me of Margin Call with the whole business setting. But this is different from that it involves a car accident and a affair. Richard Gere was very good and he might get nominated for an Oscar for Best Actor. Susan Sarandon was ok. Brit Marling was good as Richard Gere’s daughter. Did not like Tim Roth (the cop from Reservoir Dogs) as the detective. His body language seemed totally wrong. Looked like he was acting like a gangster or criminal. Nate Parker was good as the guy who gets caught because of helping Richard Gere.

    Leatherheads

    Director : G. Clooney.

    Starring: G. Clooney, Renee Zellweger
    _________________________________________________

Well if you have a funny bone, and love for classic comedy romantic sports drama, you gonna surely love it. I felt the leads were fantastic in this gem of a movie, which i had not heard of before, but thoroughly enjoyed, it is said in that tone which clicks your funny bone. Interestingly set in the time how American Football becomes professional, it has loads of chaplinsque moments and making of a perfect classic, i fail to remember a movie on same class…. it drazzles with those amazing 20’s music, costume and the love for that era.

Set in a time when in football there were no rules and how it became a professional game, and inspired from some true story about that time (as per wiki) it leaves one asking for more and more of it, and i have to say first 30 minutes are the best fun i have ever had in long time!! and the movie me miss the entire United – S’land football game

One special note for Renee Zellweger she comes out on top of this. And Director Clooney surprises me with this light movie.

    Recommended.

just finished watching a masterpiece called American beauty on mainly power and sputniks recco. The film is just brilliant. It starts off looking like a serious-version of say american pie but it goes far beyond. Its a cynical take on human psychology, twisted relationships and intra-personal/emotional clashes. The scenes, dialogues are like a satire. There is a lot of sarcasm thorughout and it works like a dream. Without a doubt a strongly recommended film and no doubt among my all time fav filsm. 10/10.

Now that you liked it yes its a excellent movie. I think its the best movie on “American” life and culture – its like a mirror. And it deserved all the Oscars that it got – Best Picture, Best Actor, Best Director, Best Original Screenplay and Best Cinematography.

just got to know from sunil that Thora Birch (kevin daughter in AB) is child of two pornographic actors who starred in cult porn film Deep Throat. Having brought up in such background, I think there may be some realism in her act as the angry, teenager girl.she was very convincing in the movie.

Watched Cindrella Man – Based on / Inspired from real boxer’s life story named Braddock who regains his heavy weight championship after going through sluggish life of a boxer in the ring as well as outside the ring, deprived of hunger due economic crisis or the great depression period around 1930’s. Russel Crowe is brilliant as an actor but not as a boxer… There are some punches in the ring that looks very effective and real but unlike the real boxing match. His role as a father and a husband is more important than as a boxer itself and the final fight is kept as real as it should be which was the best thing in the movie… I would give 4/5

Watched Paiyya – Tamil movie starring tamannah and some guy called karthi (seen him first time) is a romantic action drama film is a subtle and simple romantic movie till the interval but later turns to action drama with its pre-interval fairy tale. What i liked about the movie was Karthi’s attitude in the film… I bet even salman or akshay are no comparison for this gross/ott action scenes and they are better than wanted or rr kinda actions… He can pull off such gross/ott actions with his man of steel kind of attitude… He has some good moves as well.. On acting he didn’t need to do much coz of the story and everything from start to end is the journey in the car from bangalore to bombay. It was simple but entertaining one with few funny moment.. Its too long a movie but. Had two good songs as well …. rating 3/5

Watched No man’s land – I didn’t liked the move much… it was boring, long and was more of an artistic/realistic film that ended up being dramatic film at the end. May be i was fed up of these kinda type of films but if you ask me will i watch not watch again. 2.5/5

Just watched Force and liked it. I think this is the best among all the latest South Indian movie remakes. Some initial bits of Genelia looked like typical South Indian movie stuff where the girl is the one chasing the guy. Also did not understand why the villain leaves Genelia alive till the final scene. Liked the action scenes. John Abraham was good and I think he should do more roles like this. Vidyut Jamwal was excellent as the psycho villain. The first fight scene of Vidyut Jamwal was very good so I was kind of disappointed with his later fight scenes. Performances were good by Mohnish Behl and the supporting cast.

Tried to watch Moonrise Kingdom directed by Wes Anderson. It was weird from the start but I thought I will give it a chance. But I could not take it anymore once the kids were found. I remember once trying to watch The Royal Tenenbaums by the same director and stopped watching after 15 minutes. I don’t think his movies are to my taste. I don’t know why this movie is rated 8 on IMDB – weird characters set in a weird land. And I am trying to be diplomatic in my comment.

Also watched Salmon Fishing in the Yemen. Its about a fisheries expert approached by a consultant to help realize a sheik’s vision of bringing the sport of fly-fishing to the desert. Liked the movie. It was very good except for some scenes like the fish jumping out of water which could have been a little subtle. The whole terrorist thing seemed a bit too deliberate and unnecessary. The development of the relationship between the leads was done very well. Performances by Ewan McGregor, Emily Blunt and Amr Waked were very good.

    • hithere 11 years ago

Baba… That Bath Tub Scene in AB with all those Rose Petals!
    Jannat!!! 😀

And then the 2nd Last Scene even though it has Nudity and Spacey Undressing Mena Suvari[My Beautiful Barbie Doll from ‘American Pie’ *___* ], it is Such an Emotionally Charged and Poignant Moment in the Movie.

    • Baba Ji 11 years ago

well, if nudity is shown in the way as done in American beauty, nudity wont have a bad name in cinema at all. its brilliance.

the father (kevin) who has an unhappy sex life and whose daughter, wife doesnt respect him. he has a low self esteem and so tries to shy from this harsh fact by fantasizing about his daughters friend.this is not necessarily bcos she is very attractive but more bcos by doing this, he feels good about himself. it makes him happy.
but once he comes to know she is just as loner and also suffers from low self esteem like her,he sympathizes with her.a brilliant scene for sure.

I loved Mena’s (friend of kevin daugher) character too. her lines to kevin daughter that “”i bet you have sneeked peak at ur dads underwear “” i bet he has a big dick” may sound like they are written for laughs but if you analyse they actually tell a story about her own mental defense mechanism.
her character is also sarcastic.she is a virgin who has never known how sex feels like.she has heard and read that big dick is good for sex so she keeps talking about it,to sound cool.In that car scene she says, ” i like when others look at me, that means i have a chance to be a model!” At all points, She tries to convince herself that she is not ordinary by giving herself silly reasonings.

I saw the film again today and I feel like i can write a book on american beauty and the interpretations of various characaters. 😀

Force was One of the Remakes ‘having’ a Superb Story but was Marred by Pathetic Acting by the Leads.

Only Liked Vidyut and his Action Sequences!

Wanted, Agneepath & Ghajini Remain My Personal Top3 Favourites Since the Trend of ‘Masala’ Started in 2008.

    ………

    English Vinglish[Rewatch]

There’s Just Something Awesomely Endearing about this Film that Makes Me all ‘Mushy’ 😛

By Far, The Best Bollywood Movie of 2012 IMO[And I don’t Think Dabangg2 has Any Realistic Chance of Beating that]. 🙂

havent seen force so far but want to see after the good things everyone seems to be saying about it. but i agree on vidyut. saw his fight clips from the film on youtube. he surely has some skills.

I had watched Midnight in Paris a few months back but missed out on the last 20 minutes and thought I will watch it later but completely forgot about it. Your comment reminded me of that and went back and completed the movie. I liked it. It was different and enjoyable.

Watched Dum Maaro Dum. The movie is about fighting drugs in Goa. So in a way it is similar to Force which released later the same year. Movie was ok but it could have been better. There is a stupid ghost appearing scene at the end which was totally unnecessary and spoiler alert for those who have not seen it. Abhishek dies in the climax which was like a anti climax. I was able to guess who the bad guy among the cops will be and it turned out to be the same person. Abhishek was not bad but he needs to get rid of the frown that he always has. Some of his dialogues were wannabe. And why does he have to sing his father’s song? And that rap song should have been used in the opening credits not in the movie. Govind Namdeo was ok. Rana was ok and his accent was not bad. He pretty much had a useless role until the last 10 minutes of the movie where he became the main lead. Prateik was very annoying with his whiny little voice. Bipasha

Also watched Swedish movie Let the Right One In. Synopsis: “Oscar, an overlooked and bullied boy, finds love and revenge through Eli, a beautiful but peculiar girl who turns out to be a vampire”. Did not like the movie much. It was slow paced and weird. And it also seemed to say that killing is ok.

Watched and finished Homeland complete season 1 at one shot… Its awesome…. I vote Prison Break over this but this is also awesome.. Didn’t get complete season 2 so didn’t downloaded… will download whenever its up… and also who ever have seen the series can i ask one question? Why most of the blame is put on Vice President or always its like VP is the main culprit in such series?

Anyone has seen Game of throne? is it good? downloaded two seasons…

Finally saw English Vingish and MAkkhi last week.

Agree with Sputnik’s view that Amitabh was irritating and other stereotypes too. Sridevi was not looking one bit marathi.

Makkhi was good watch just for the fact that it is such an attempt in India. The tantrik killing makkhi was a stupid scene…even if whole movie is a work of fiction , that scene was OTT.

Just watched the French movie Amour.

Synopsis from wikipedia: Its about an elderly couple, Anne and Georges, who are retired music teachers with a daughter who lives abroad. One morning, they are eating breakfast together and Anne goes silent. for a few minutes. Anne undergoes a surgery but it goes wrong leaving her partially paralysed and confined to a wheelchair. She makes Georges promise not to send her back to the hospital or go into a nursing home. However, she suffers a further stroke and her condition worsens. Georges continues to look after Anne, despite the strain it puts on him to do so.

Some scenes were very good like the one where Anne gets mad at having wet herself and another where Georges gets angry at Anne because she spits the water out.

    Spoiler Alert
The movie is very slow paced and there are scenes where there is total darkness and silence for a minute or so. The movie is very grim and its too real but I did not like the ending. There was a scene where I thought the movie would end but it went on with Georges writing some letter and doing some other things. And there is some dream sequence and a daughter scene which just did not make any sense to me. Went to IMDB and people are giving various interpretations of the scene.

Jean-Louis Trintignant was very good as the caring husband and Emmanuelle Riva was excellent as the paralyzed wife. Isabelle Huppert was good as the daughter who loves her mother but who also cannot take care of her and is more concerned about her own problems.

Just watched Dabangg 2. Movie should have been named Action Replay because that’s what it is. Chulpul Pandey gets transferred along with his co workers. One of the goons in the go down fight scene has also relocated to Kanpur. A family member is killed. Last shirtless fight scene is similar. Songs are similar and so on.

There are some comedy scenes where Salman keeps making prank calls to Vinod Khanna. One can like/dislike that depending on whether they think those are appropriate or not. A couple of Arbaaz scenes are funny. And its nice to see a husband wife romance instead of the usual romance.

Salman is very good as Chulbul Pandey just as he was in the first one. And this is a total one man show. In the first one Salman goes to Chedi Singh with a lot of cops in the final fight scene but here he goes alone and single handedly bashes all of them.

Sonakshi has a almost special appearance kind of role. Deepak Dobriyal is good in a small role. Prakash Raj was good but it felt like his voice was dubbed. Not sure about that.

Its watchable but as I said before it gives the feeling of having already seen this one before.

    • hithere 11 years ago

Agree with your views about the movie. I am not a fan of first one. This one is similar. I think first one was better in the sense that villain was formidable. Here it is not the case. It is all the way Chulbul Pandey show. I thought Dobriyal was wasted and Prakash Raj looked more South Indian than a Kanpuria Gunda.

    • Author
      sputnik 11 years ago

I had doubt about Prakash Raj’s voice having been dubbed in Dabangg 2 which I mentioned in my comment above. “Prakash Raj was good but it felt like his voice was dubbed. Not sure about that.”

      ZoomTV just tweeted

“‘Dabangg 2’ baddie Prakash Raj reportedly had a fall-out with Arbaaz Khan while shooting the film & he left the dubbing incomplete ”

    • Author
      sputnik 11 years ago

‘A source says, “It was a high-profile role that Prakash landed, especially since Sonu Sood became an overnight star with Dabangg. However after the film was shot, he refused to give dubbing dates. Arbaaz sent him an email for the same which went unanswered.” Prakash apparently later blocked November 22 and 23 for the dubbing but failed to turn up on the second day.

Sources add that the South actor was not happy with the length of his role. The informer states, “There were professional issues. Prakash was not happy with certain portions of the film being edited out but Arbaaz explained to him that such things happen. But by then he had made up his mind to not dub for the film. It is difficult to please everyone and Arbaaz felt the film was bigger than an individual.”

Arbaaz states, “It was not the happiest experience for both of us. Next time we both will be more clear so that we don’t have issues.”

Prakash was not so forthcoming to comment on the matter and quipped, “Dabangg 2 is over, so why speak about it now?” Neither did he say why he refused to dub for the film.’

Obviously who has been given the most of the screen space, the show belongs to him. No matter, how terribly he performs.

mate watch #JTHJ again… srk has infinite expressions and even the screen space is shared between all the characters equally as srk believes in equality where as salman in monopoly

    ‘Ishq Vishk’

It is about Rajiv [Shahid Kapoor] and Payal [Amrita Rao] who are friends since childhood – and while Payal
is in love with Rajiv, it
takes him a bit longer to
    return her Feelings.

Set in a Typical Mumbai College Campus, the Film Released in Early 2000’s became a Semi-Cult of Sorts in it’s Later Years while doing Average Business @ the BO[7cr].

It is the ‘Perfect Amalgamation’ of Many Popular Culture of Young Stories – From JJWS to Johar’s KKHH[Shahid/Shah Rukh – Amrita/Kajol – Shenaz/Rani] to AWTR to Archie’s Comics[Archie-Jughead-Betty-Veronica]!

Some Pretty Good Kumar Sanu and Sonu Nigam Songs, IV is a Light Tp Entertainer with Some Cool Dialogues for it’s Time and Totally Cute – Shahid and Amrita!

p.s – Somehow, I End Up Liking these College Romances everytime! 🙂

JJWS Remains the Best of this Genre IMO.

Shenaz as the College Bombshell was Totally a Miscast.
They Shud have Used Some Other Pretty Actress Or Say Priyanka Chopra in that Role wud have Been Good and it wud have made the Movie more ‘Interesting’ Now.

Finally watched Ek Tha Tiger. Parts of it are silly but it never bored. It was enjoyable.

Action scenes were really good – not the usual OTT action of masala movies. The first action scene was good till Salman stopped the train with his shirt. Katrina’s bodydouble was excellent especially in the action scenes in Cuba.

Salman initially seemed to be miscast as he was doing his usual comedy but later on he seemed fine. Katrina looked gorgeous and was ok acting wise. Songs were all good.

“Katrina’s bodydouble was excellent especially in the action scenes in Cuba”

    Bwahahahahahahahahahahahaha!
    😀

So Sputnik, ETT v/s Dbng2 – The Better Movie?

    • Baba Ji 11 years ago

LOL! good that someone is compassionate enough to acknowledge the efforts of body double 😉 if you noticed closely, the kat body double was taller and had broad shoulders. I am not sure but it could be a man wearing a wig. Also All major stunts of katrina was shot from backside if you observe. In case of salman, his face was superimposed on the body of stunt double. Action in ett was good but I didnt find it brilliant etc.

    • Author
      sputnik 11 years ago

There is not much to choose between them. When watching ETT it at least felt like I am watching a new movie 😉

      @Baba,

Had to acknowledge because Kat’s body double was better than Salman’s body double in those Cuba action scenes 😉 They wont spend money on superimposing Kat’s face on the body double. Salman fans don’t care for all that. They are more interested in watching Salman’s face 😉

      • Baba Ji 11 years ago

LOL. I think i will also choose ett bcos it had some “story” to talk about. that it was stupid is a different debate. agreed that katrina had better stunts. Infact she had a smarter role than salman here. She almost guides him throughout the film. Her blank expressions work as we dont know what she has in mind.

  62. Serenzy 11 years ago

“…as we don’t know what she has in her mind”

    Blank Expression.
    Lolwa!

Completed Season 2 of Homeland. Ended on a good note to start the Season 3 from 2013.

Skimmed through Game of Thornes season 1 – seem to be the best Porn Series. Will complete once i get the time.

Watched 3:10 to Yuma – starring bale n russle crowe. Liked it in parts but it was long n boring sometimes.
    Plot Summary
A small-time rancher agrees to hold a captured outlaw who’s awaiting a train to go to court in Yuma. A battle of wills ensues as the outlaw tries to psych out the rancher. (IMDB)

Raid at Cabanatuan – Based on true story and largest ever rescue operation in history of American Military. Again liked in parts as it was too long n boring…
    Plot Summary
Taking place towards the end of WWII, 500 American Soldiers have been entrapped in a camp for 3 years. Beginning to give up hope they will ever be rescued, a group of Rangers goes on a dangerous mission to try and save them. (IMDB)

Watched The Crossing Guard directed by Sean Penn and starring Jack Nicholson. Its about a father who tells the drunk driver (released after 6 years) who had killed his daughter that he has only 3 days to live before he kills him. Did not like the movie much. Felt like it had lot of unnecessary scenes. Also a couple of scenes looked pretentious. The ending again was pretentious and contrived. Jack Nicholson was good as the father struggling to cope with the loss of his daughter and David Morse was good as the drunk driver living with guilt.

    Sputnik,

    – What does ‘Ad-Libbed/Lipped’ Mean in Movies??

    – Ur View on ‘Dog Day Afternoon’?

    ….

I Saw the ‘Inside Man’ Yesterday and I Liked the Plot a Lot.

They have Gone into the Details of the Robbery and the Hiest Part was Done well.

The Ode to the Title, the “Inside Man” was Totally Cool.
    I Liked the Movie.

Jodie Foster Angle was Unnecessary and Not Reqd.

Denzel Washington as the Detective Cop was the STAR of the Movie.

    • Author
      sputnik 11 years ago

I did not know what it meant but according to wikipedia – “In film the term ad-lib usually refers to the interpolation of unscripted material in an otherwise scripted performance. In interviews, Dustin Hoffman says he ad-libbed the now famous line, “I’m walking here! I’m walking here!” as “Ratso” Rizzo in Midnight Cowboy.”

Watched Dog Day Afternoon long time back in the 90s on TV. So don’t remember much in detail. Was thinking of revisiting the movie for some time.

“Jodie Foster Angle was Unnecessary and Not Reqd.

Denzel Washington as the Detective Cop was the STAR of the Movie.”

Agree with you on Inside Man.

  66. Baba Ji 11 years ago

just finished watching The silence of the lambs. Its a creepy film that manages to scare you at some points. Hopkins lecter role is a masterpiece and every time lits the screen with his extraordinary presence. I didnt like Jodie foster much. agreed that she is a FBI trainee but she seemed too timid for the role. may be it was intentional. Screenplay is a bit slow. The film is inspired from real life incidents that took place in 1988 to 1991 about some pscyho killer in US . Story is interesting.Very good film.Heard it won multiple oscars.

    • Baba Ji 11 years ago

jodi foster cries outside when semen is thrown on her face in the jailroom by a patient..she used to get scared even by the voice of a door getting closed. every time she used to talk, she only conveyed fear. there is a scene where she is with her boss and he makes her wait, other police guards watch her and she almost gets claustrophobic.she was very weak emotionally. which made the climax where she kills the killer in a split second, look a bit difficult to digest.

    • Shinji 11 years ago

And hopkins won Oscar for those 7 minute role. That’s something!

      • Author
        sputnik 11 years ago

Not 7 minutes but around 16 minutes.

“The second-shortest winning appearance was made by Anthony Hopkins in 1992, for less than 16 minutes of screen time as Dr Hannibal “The Cannibal” Lecter in The Silence of the Lambs.”
