Movies You Watched This Month – April 2013

himmatwala2 Synopsis: Ravi returns to the village to his mother and sister and takes revenge against the land grabbing Sarpanch who was responsible for his father’s suicide. The movie is a remake of the 1983 Himmatwala. Had not seen the original before except some bits here and there. So watched the original Himmatwala after watching the new Himmatwala.

The movie is pretty much a faithful retelling of the original Himmatwala with some changes. Some of the changes like Ajay not being the real Ravi don’t add much to the story. Riteish track was horrible and unnecessary. While the original had Jeetendra as an Engineer and is shown doing some work Ajay’s character does pretty much nothing. There was a flooding scene and some song with villagers which has thankfully been removed from the remake. The original has Ravi’s father as the school teacher who is accused of attempted rape and him running away due to the humiliation. Since this part was similar to the new Agneepath the father track has been changed to a Pandit who is accused of stealing and him committing suicide. The ridiculous tiger part in the remake was not there in the original.

The original Himmatwala was itself a bad film but seems better in comparison to the remake may be due to nostalgia. Jeetendra’s acting in the original was bad too but his costumes were funny. Sridevi had some thunder thighs and the camera was focusing on her behind in a few scenes. Amjad Khan was good in it and so was Kader Khan.

Ajay was bad in lot of scenes and was trying to repeat his Singham act in some scenes. Tammannah was ok but looked pretty. There is the stupid Bum Pe Laat song where kids kick her butt and I don’t know if this is supposed to be funny or its Sajid’s advice to kids. Paresh Rawal was very irritating specially as he was trying to copy Kader Khan including his voice. Mahesh Manjrekar was ok in that role but his role was more that of a comic villain.

The problem with the movie is that it is pretty much the 80s movie made in 1980s. It has the whole mother, sister angle and the sister being harassed by her in laws and so much melodrama at the end. There is only one Pyscho spoof scene which is somewhat funny. One cannot remake a bad 80s movie today and expect people to like it. The movie should instead have been a spoof of the old Himmatwala.

—————–

rudy-ruettiger1 Synopsis: Rudy has always been told that he was too small to play college football. But he is determined to overcome the odds and fulfill his dream of playing for Notre Dame.

Movie started off well with the whole underdog thing. But at many places he seemed more like a crazy guy than a man with a dream or a mission and he was lucky to get help that he got which many others would not have. While the movie showed that he put a lot of heart and fight during the training sessions it felt like that the others looked at him more with sympathy because of his lack of height/physique and that the final game was more like a charity thing. I thought that the movie would be of him becoming a successful player but it turned out that he played just one game.

The scene where the players offer their jerseys was so cheesy and did not happen in reality. Neither did the Rudy chant happen in reality. They also added some drama with the new coach being against him and Rudy quitting and all that which never happened. Sean Astin was good as Rudy. Jon Favreau, Ned Beatty, Charles S. Dutton were good.

“The real life Dan Devine was actually the one who insisted on playing Rudy in his final game. Hell, even when the movie was being made, Devine gave the filmmakers permission to turn him into the film’s villain in order to help Rudy, who he considered a good friend.” Link

What’s damning about the movie is this and this is confirmed from Rudy’s own website too (Link). “By the way, ever wonder who saw Rudy play that day and got so inspired he just had to make it into a movie? Nobody. It was Rudy himself who spent a full decade trying to convince studios that his life was so awesome it deserved a movie, before one of them finally relented. That’s the spirit, little guy!”

@sputnik : if u can make a post on this, i did be obliged. If not possible under rules of the forum, than also it ok!

Well, i have to admit, it’s some time a movie/video/scene motivated me to write/post something, but there are moments in life which move you from your work and normal life, and make you notice something extraordinary! and yet funny that you realise yes indeed you are living! ( ya i know i exaggerate at times but being a fan masala movies doesnt help the matter, everything is larger than life ) But on this one seriously I am quite moved at simple innocent colourful fun the short offered me with it’s backward technique! If you thought those mind bending movies/short only can be serious like inception, etc wait till you have seen this

I had one such small moment as i was about to crash tonight, when my friend Bandish, send me a link for this short! and i was like what the hell, was that sent for me?? that’s a first! My second reaction was must be some movie trailer/some music video… and as i sleepily awaited buffering, the music caught my attention! which couldnt have been more appropriate… and than began fun magic riot! as the Dhuleti ( holi ) celebration unfolded with a beautiful rainbow coloured girl ( Reema Shah, it was delightful fun to see your expressions ) and the magic of Holi Colours!! The girl had some very pertinent expressions, which drew my attention and along with the crazy fact that i was not knowing what was happening! i was like what the hell, as i was quite sure something Mementosque about this short! My mind was trying to figure the trick! and yet but the sheer enjoyment of colours and fun she was having overcomes my natural human instinct to think/analyse and i enjoyed it! The fact that i was compelled to write, forgetting the fact that i was otherwise sleeping with tensed dreams of an fresh urgent matter, was washed away in the water and colours of this Holi video ( Lord save my client! ) , hopefully suggest others may also like it so sharing it!

    Two Thumbs Up!

    * When Bandish is not making Holi videos with friends and having a riot with mind bending colourful videos, he is practising lawyer at Gujarat High Court! A expert at his craft imo.
    * it was his first video to my knowledge!
Reema Shah also when not playing holi and acting for first time in the short is Chartered Accountant by profession, sure she would be making numbers also as colourful and fun as her act in the short

Watched Witness A young Amish boy is sole witness to a murder; policeman John Book goes into hiding in Amish country to protect him until the trial.

Movie starts of as a thriller but its more of a love story and a look at the Amish culture and their life. I thought the movie would be about hiding the kid till the trial but there never was any trial or anything. I think the murder and the police angle was just an excuse to set the love story in Amish country. The ending was quite silly with the villains not even trying to kill the kid who was a witness but just wanting to kill Harrison Ford. One of the villains does not even shoot Harrison Ford when he has the chance and then lays down his gun on a lecture from Harrison Ford.

The movie was nominated for eight Academy Awards and won two, for Best Original Screenplay and Best Film Editing. I don’t think it deserved the Best Original Screenplay award. The only thing new/unique about the movie is that it is set in Amish country.

For those who don’t know much about the Amish they “are a group of traditionalist Christian church fellowships. The Amish are known for simple living, plain dress, and reluctance to adopt many conveniences of modern technology.”

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Amish

Harrison Ford was good and its his only Oscar nomination as Best Actor. He was better in Regarding Henry though and deserved a nomination for it. Kelly McGillis looked pretty and acted very well too. Lukas Haas, the little kid who played Sameul was cute and acted well. Never like Danny Glover and did not like him in this one too.

Watched Iranian movie The Deserted Station On a pilgrimage to Mashad from Tehran, a couple’s transportation breaks down, far from any major town. The husband, a photographer, seeks help at a nearby village and encounters a teacher who offers to help. Whilst the husband and teacher go off to find a spare part, the wife, who used to be a teacher, takes over the teaching lessons in the village.

Weird movie. It was like a art film – slow and boring. There were some symbolic scenes but did not understand what was the point of the movie. Initially they show as if the town is deserted but later on there are so many women and kids.

Leila Hatami (A Separation fame) acted well and so did the actor who played her husband.

Saw Table no 21. A well made film but quite depressing. Felt terribly bad for all the characters involved after the movie ended- which is quite rare. The heroine got a raw deal- don’t know why she agreed to do the movie.

Watched The World’s Fastest Indian The life story of New Zealander Burt Munro, who spent years building a 1920 Indian motorcycle — a bike which helped him set the land-speed world record at Utah’s Bonneville Salt Flats in 1967.

Movie was good but it could have been even better. They should have showed the struggle/hardwork he put into modifying his bike instead of showing all the culture shock scenes for a person arriving from New Zealand. It also seemed that he had some sympathy going for him because he was old and he had come all the way from New Zealand in how they were willing to bend the rules for him.

The driving scenes were excellent especially the one at the end. Anthony Hopkins was very good and the rest of the cast was ok.

As far as historical accuracy goes –

“Herbert James “Burt” Munro (Bert in his youth) (25 March 1899 – 6 January 1978) was a New Zealand motorcycle racer, famous for setting an under-1,000 cc world record, at Bonneville, 26 August 1967.[2] This record still stands today. Munro was 68 and was riding a 47-year-old machine when he set his last record.[3]

Working from his home in Invercargill, he worked for 20 years to highly modify the 1920 Indian motorcycle that he had bought that same year. Munro set his first New Zealand speed record in 1938 and later set seven more. He travelled to compete at the Bonneville Salt Flats, attempting to set world speed records. During his ten visits to the salt flats, he set three speed records, one of which still stands today.”

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Burt_Munro

“The Bonneville run in the film is a composite of several runs Munro made, the first in 1956. In 1962 at Bonneville, he set the record of 178.971 MPH.

Munro’s fastest complete run at Bonneville was 190.07 MPH. He never set a record of 201 MPH at Bonneville as the film portrays, but did reach 205.67 MPH on an uncompleted run, on which he unfortunately crashed.[4] Munro does crash after his 201 MPH record-breaking run, which is officialised unlike the 205.67 MPH run.” – From wikipedia.

Watched ”G.I. Joe: Retaliation” in 3D , and It was An great experience with great breath-taking Action sequence and even I felt some time it was way bigger/better than ‘007 Series’ interm of non stop action, great VFX, deadpan Characters of film and It has very Advanced Technique Comprised with Great Background Score.

Retaliation takes off You from where Rise of Cobra ended, and the movie is best enjoyed ; the President of the US has been replaced by Zartan aided with some nanomite technique used . It had carried real history-Pakistan as failed Country and the Joes are sent to retrieve the country’s nuclear arsenal ; but President of US had Cobra operative, and he wipes out the entire GI Joe force including the hero from the previous film Duke through AirForce attack in PAK ; except for the Roadblock, Lady Jaye & Flint . And after that what did happen in movie ? Is rest part of movie !

Climax of Movie BitOf lack with your expectation which Can disappointed You and it also indicated with Next Part is Coming !

Watched In the Valley of Elah A retired military investigator works with a police detective to uncover the truth behind his son’s disappearance following his return from a tour of duty in Iraq.

Its based on a true story of Richard T. Davis who was an Infantryman in the United States Army. Less than two days after returning from deployment to Iraq, Davis was murdered outside Fort Benning, Georgia by a fellow soldier from Baker Company, Alberto Martinez. Three other soldiers were also present and involved in the events that led up to the killing and followed the killing. Initially, the Army concluded that Davis deserted and despite pleas from Davis’ father, would not initiate an investigation into his son’s disappearance for nearly two months.[5] Davis’ remains were not found until November 2003. He had been stabbed in the head, neck, and chest at least thirty-three times.[5] His body was later dismembered, doused in lighter fluid, and burned. Unnamed sources have suggested that Davis was killed because he had planned to make a complaint about a rape of an Iraqi woman by US troops. (From wikipedia)

The movie instead shows that the son was involved in running over their Humvee over some kid and it kind of hinted at he and his killer suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder. Movie was a quite slow paced.

Tommy Lee Jones was excellent as the father trying to find out who killed his son. Charlize Theron was very good too. Susan Sarandon has a smaller role but she was very good in one scene.

I started watching the movie from the Charlize Theron scene with the lady whose dog is killed. So I did not pay attention to the flag scene at the end. Thanks for pointing out the flag thing.

There is a flag scene at start and there is one in end. There is a political statement in the action.

Watched Incendies. Twins journey to the Middle East to discover their family history, and fulfill their mother’s last wishes.

Have mixed feelings on this one. The way the movie is set up is so ridiculous. Would a woman just write a letter and tell her kids what happened or would she make them go on a trip to solve a puzzle?

The main story of Nawal is good and it is well shot specially the middle east parts of it. But the twist also stretches it a bit too far with the son having grown old enough in the time she is in jail and him becoming a famous Muslim torturer brought to torture in a Christian prison? How does the daughter mention Wahab as her father in one scene? And what’s so special about a three dot tattoo that no one else can have? Also the movie is supposed to be set in Lebanon but it is never mentioned. There is Palestine written on a glass window but Israel is not mentioned as the invading army.

Lubna Azabal was very good as Nawal. The girl who played the daughter Jeanne was also good.

Watched Mere Dad Ki Maruti Sameer’s father purchases a new Maruti Ertiga as a wedding gift for his daughter, but Sameer loses the car and rest of the movie is how he along his friend Gattu and girl friend Jasleen try to replace the lost car.

The whole movie is an ad for Maruti. They took product placement to a completely different level. There was some basic plot which they stretched it like a chewing gum. It was too loud especially the background music. The movie was trying too hard to be funny but it wasn’t except for a few scenes like Sameer’s sister’s dance at her Sangeet and some scenes/dialogues of Gattu.

Saqib Saleem was acting just like he did in MFK. Rhea Chakraborty was ok. Ram Kapoor was loud. Prabal Panjabi was a bit funny even though he also was acting just like in MFK. Ravi Kishan has a small cameo and he was trying to act/behave like Salman Khan in at least the first scene.

Watched Music of the Heart. It is based on the true story of Roberta Guaspari, a schoolteacher’s struggle to teach violin to inner-city Harlem kids.

Movie was very good till like the halfway mark and then the movie made a 10 year leap and lost its way. It started to look like a TV serial.

Meryl Streep was excellent as she usually is. She was nominated for an Oscar for Best Actress. Did not like Angela Bassett much. Aidan Quinn was ok. Gloria Estefan was bad. The little kids who played her sons initially were good but the teenagers who played her sons were kind of creepy and a couple of their scenes where they set up their mother for a date were weird.

Movie was good even though it was a bit slow paced. Robert DeNiro was excellent and Jane Fonda was very good. Rest of the cast was decent.

Watched Himmatwala at end of march-

“Spoof” is something that could have done wonders to HIMMATWALA. The jokes are silly and falls flat on face many times. The film had some good jokes post-intermission, and maximum laughs are served by Paresh rawal in an ineffective and weird accent. Why was he posed in such avatar remains a million dollar question! Songs are well picturised and are welcome distraction.

    Rating- 2/5.

DJANGO UNCHAINED: Smart thriller with some nail-biting thrills as well. Leonardo owns the film with his portrayal. He has it in him big time! The film feels too long at 160 minutes long which is way too long for a thriller of its kind. Also the explicit scenes were unnecessary. Yet, a thoroughly engaging film with taut screenplay as well. The scenes unfolded are well intact with each other.

    Rating- 3.5/5

CHASHME BADDOOR: The film wins your heart for the sort of simplicity that it possesses in its treatment. In a not so good form, David Dhawan’s this film manages to bring ache in your stomach and gives you an full fledged laugh-riot. Its been long that we are served with full fledged comedy in Bollywood! The Rishi-Kapoor chapter is not up-to the mark and doesn’t really go well within the mood of the film. Also one or two songs should have been chopped off. The performances are all very good. The dialogues, especially the poems are witty and memorable too.

    Rating- 3.5/5

NAUTANKI SAALA: Nautanki saala is a decent film with Ayushman being the biggest USP. The film drops at places especially post-intermission. The camarederie between both male leads is highlight of the enterprise. The humor is well laced out of the situations, and not forced for sure. The story is weak and that reflects heavily sometimes.
Its watchable no doubt, but a lot could have been pulled out of such impressive male cast and a talented director.

    Rating – 2.5/5

Agree that they should have gone the spoof route with Himmatwala.

I liked Django Unchained. Its a good masala movie Leonardo was good but I like Waltz more. Samuel Jackson was good too.

    Movies I Watched This Month

    1. Grave of the Fireflies – What a Fantastic Movie, thanks Cr for recommendation; I owe you one for recommending this to me. The last 20 minutes had such an impact of me that I literally CRIED man (probably first time ever while watching any movie). Beautiful story with exceptional cinematography, probably the best animation movie I have seen so far as its not only rich in colors, aesthetic presentation but also for its tight and beautiful script. It is set during the world war 11 in Japan where the lead protagonist Seita had to take of his little sister Setsku when his mother dies in one of the air raids, as his father is bound to give his life for the country because he is an officer. Whoever has given the voice for that child character has done an amazing job. It will come into my TOP 10 Of All time.

    2. My Neighbour Totoro – Another beautiful Japanese animated movie that is rich in colors, details, characters but had a little disappointing story. May suit to Children and may even love this film to the core but for adults it’s a simple story with children’s fairy tale and still you will not be disappointed. I liked the movie and thanks Nirjhar for recommending this movie.

    3. Frankenweenie – Animated lovers should watch this movie as well as Corpse bride. Both are very good with excellent animation and better story than the most.

    4. The Impossible – I don’t know what to say about this movie. Some scenes are outstanding and some looked really wannabe. The Tsunami scene, pool scene, hospital scene, the child searching for her mother and display of emotions after knowing abt the loss of her mother were fantastic, but scenes where father cries (excellent acting but the scene looked wannabe), display of wreckage after the tsunami were not convincing, neither those children surviving and immediately finding his father looked fake and also about the phone issue.

    5. Django Unchained – Huh, so much for this crap? Haven’t we seen so many similar movies yet more powerful in story and direction? It is the most overrated movie of 2012. Jamie Fox really disappointed me but the other guy Christopher Waltz is just fabulous. It is just stretched like a chewing gum that loses its taste after first few bites was my opinion before I saw the final 10 minutes. But then the film could have trimmed down by 20 minutes to give more edgy thrill ride than slow paced action flick. The shooting scenes are handled by both fox and waltz brilliantly. Leonardo’s performance is indeed excellent. He is one guy who can immerse himself into any character, sheer magic. Overall an entertaining flick that bores you to death in between. Samuel is brilliant and I failed to recognize him throughout the movie.

    6. Fracture – Another brilliant film entirely based on performance more than the twist or suspense (though it is good). Two brilliant actors pitted against each other and both wins hands down. Ryan Gosling is totally different in this film, in his approach and looks super confident whereas Anthony Hopkins delivers a solid performance and has rules over everyone in the film till the climax. Highly recommended film especially for Ryan Gosling fans.

    7. Old Boy – Watched it 4th time I believe. Super awesome flick.

    8. Race 2 – It was entertaining, twisted with some good performance from Saif and Anil. John continued his code of ethic to follow one expression at a time and all the time. Jacquilen and Deepika were sexy and overall it was an entertaining popcorn movie.

    9. Sinister – I am not a fan of horror genre and don’t watch many horror movies, but this was exception. It kept me on the edge until the small children started to appear. Liked the movie as well as climax. The fear factor was present till the Climax but lost its charm during the Climax. The protagonist moves to a new house where the killings took place to write a Book on the same killings. While he starts investigating, certain things start haunting him and he start believing in such weird things. As soon he realizes the existence of ghosts he goes back to the old house where he belongs but meets with unfortunate incident. Highly Recommended.

    10. The Man with the Iron Fists – Chutiya film, the b grade chinese films are better than this one. All it had was STYLE nothing else but STYLE.

    11. War of the Arrows – Another brilliant flick that revolves around a brother (master of archery) who promised his father to protect her sister from danger. Acting and performance by most of them are good, the chase scene is brilliant and the battle of arrows was also good. It is a slow paced in the beginning but when story moves forward it gives a thrilling experience.

    12. Life of Pie – Regretted for not watching it in 3D. Loved the movie for everything it had to offer. Highly recommended for those who haven’t yet watched. When I saw the promo, it looked so childish that one will not even think of downloading it from torrents which stands equal to promo of “the world’s fastest Indian”. No doubt it had such a great WOM.

    13. Babel – Four different lives and their parallel stories that are some-how connected to each other and that’s what babel has to offer. Brad pitt takes his wife to a foreign trip to Morrocco to solve the difference between the two and rekindle the lost chemistry. Meanwhile travelling through the bus his wife gets shot. Then there is a cattle breeder in Morrocco who buys a rifle to save his cattles from jackals. He hands over to his boys to take care of cattles and save them from jackals. Then there is a maid who takes care of two white kids and stays in US. She had to go to her son’s wedding while the parents are away she is forced to stay back and instead she takes the two kids along with her to Mexico for her wedding. While coming back from wedding they get bullied by US border officials for not having proper document and permission letter. The driver is related to the maid escapes from the scene leaving the kids and maid in the middle of the desert. Then there is a Korean father and her daughter’s story whereas her daughter is dumb and father is a hunter. All three characters are somehow connects in the end. I felt the Korean part was just unnecessary.

    14. Table 21 – It can be termed as Chitkabrey with better actors and high production value. Loved the Cinematography and performance of Rajiv khandelwal as well as paresh rawal’s. The portions short in Fiji Island were awesome and the song during Honeymoon or the introduction song complemented the Nature’s beauty on that Island.

    15. David – Superb, Different, Brilliant and I loved the movie. Film had three different time zone and three different stories of 3 Davids. Character of David (loyalist to his surrogate family) from London set in 1975 is performed by Neil Nithin Mukesh. He excels in his character displaying the right amount of emotions, thrill and beautiful chemistry with Monica Dogra. It is set against the backdrop of a mission to Kill Ghani, Leader of Muslim Gang in London and Indian Intelligence who claim to have found Ghani’s funds on terrorist attacks in India. As the story moves forward it reveals many unpleasant and unsatisfying mysteries of David’s family. Character of David (aspiring musician) from Mumbai is played by Vinay Virmani set in 1999 is all about his family whose lives gets affected and his father the priest gets thrashed by radical hindu activists and how his life takes U-turn from there on. Character of David (the drunkard & fisherman) from Goa played by Vikram is set in 2010 is the most lovable, appreciative as well as irritating character from the above. Isha Shervani looks so gorgeous that you will immediately fall in love with her and you definitely get to see the beautiful chemistry brewing between the two. Tabu also has a side role in this & does well. Not to mention his father’s character performed by Saurabh Shukla who is exceptionally brilliant. All three have justified their roles specially the character of David (drunkard & fisherman). It is slow paced and all three characters connect in the end on a positive note. Highly Recommended.

    16. 3G – A Killer Connection – Waste of time and waste of money put on this stupid movie. Few scenes were really good about the ghost’s part but the main plot itself is so ridiculous that it acts as a sleeping pill.

    17. Jack Reacher – Is all about one man show and its Tom Cruise. He is the Ex-military Investigator, always mobile and unreachable. It’s about a case where a Sniper kills random innocents on a street and the case is resolved within hours and the sniper gets arrested. The snipers asks Jack Reacher to investigate his case and later it is revealed that he is staged or framed for the charges that he didn’t commit. Liked the movie but could have been much better. Liked Tom Cruise performance and the main lady Rosamund but overall little disappointing.

    18. Pan’s Labyrinth – It has a parallel story of a child character indulged in her fairy world and believed to be the underground princess set in the midst of Spanish Civil War. There are some amazing scenery as well as knock out performances from the Captain of the army and the maid. The Captain is shrewd, arrogant, egoistic, cold-shoulder and autocratic, killing innocents and trying to finish off the Guerilla.

    19. Inkar – Loved the movie and brilliant performance from Arjun Rampal and Chitraganda. Superb… It’s more of a romantic tale than about sexual harassment. If the movie was promoted showcasing the romantic angle then I think it would have succeeded in box office as well. The confidence shown by Arjun in the character he played as CEO is very good and Chitragana’s character of a girl climbing up the hierarchy from an employee to National Creative Director is excellent. The Chemistry is worth mentioning and all the supporting characters have done well.

    20. Dog Day Afternoon – Based on true incident that happened in New York three men plans to rob a bank in the daylight within half an hour during the closing time and escape. One of the members decides to quit at the last moment and leaves the premise. Things go wrong in handling staff requests and within minutes the bank is surrounded by hundreds of cops, fbi, media and general public. Al Pachino is sheer brilliant and gives a knock out performance.

    21. A Dirty Carnival – A pure and one of the best Gangster Movie I have seen. It’s a Korean Movie based on the life of Byeong-du the protagonist of the film and the Gangster. There is a parallel story of his friend struggling to direct a movie as well. The realism displayed in this movie wins lot of accolades and appreciation. There are some fight scenes which brings you to reality or relate to your past incidents if ever you have been involved in fights or been a victim of these fights. The performance by all 3 major characters of the film is just brilliant.

My thoughts on The Impossible were similar. Here is my comment.

“Watched The Impossible which is based on a true story of a family that survived the Tsunami. The Spanish family has been changed to a British family which has led to some comments of racism. There is also valid criticism that the movie concentrates mostly on white people whereas the suffering of the Thai people is hardly looked at.

The Tsunami scenes are done very well. The movie does not show how the two little kids who were with the father survived – there is just some dialogue. There are some good emotional scenes. But it also kind of drags and I know this may sound cynical but some scenes reminded me of those Kumbh Mela scenes from old Hindi movies. Naomi Watts acted very well. Ewan McGregor was ok. He was very good in one emotional breakdown scene. Tom Holland, the elder kid acted well.”

Django Unchained is just a masala movie. Christopher Waltz, Leonardo and Samuel were very good.

Have to watch Fracture and Dog Day Afternoon. May have seen last 20-30 min of Dog Day Afternoon many years ago on Star Movies don’t remember much though.

If you liked Babel you should watch Amores Perros by the same director. I liked it more than Babel.

Had fast forwarded though 3G – A Killer Connection. Agree wit you that the main plot itself is so ridiculous.

Dog day after as CR said is best performance of Al Pacino. Watch it if u can along with grave of fireflies.

Here is my comment on Amores Perros.

“Just finished watching the Mexican movie Amores Perros. The movie has three interconnected stories. Liked the first one a lot and that was the major part of the movie. Second one was a bit annoying. Third one was a bit slow paced. All three stories have dogs as integral characters and these are supposed to resemble their masters. Liked this movie much more than Babel by the same director. Background Music by Gustavo Santaolalla was excellent especially in some scenes.”

    Also watched two more movies;

Kirayedaar – Raj babbar’s and padmini kolhapure’s romantic tale that takes a U-turn when misunderstanding occurs between the two about the issues relating to raj babber’s father utpal dutt’s house. Like many other this one also has similar story where the tenants refuse to vacate the flat and still pay low rent compared to others where as the owner is struggling to regain his flat back. Raj babbar has acted very well and utpal dutt is exceptionally brilliant Bewakoof 😛

Sammy 2 – Its about the story of turtles caught by the fishermen and then sold to the owner of biggest underwater aquarium in UAE and how the little kids of these turtles try to save their grand dad and father sammy2. The animation was really good but the story had nothing to offer. very poor editing as well as direction.

Watched Road to Perdition Bonds of loyalty are put to the test when a hitman’s son witnesses what his father does for a living.

Liked the movie. It was good though it was quite leisurely paced. Cinematography was very good and found out that Conrad L. Hall won the Oscar for Best Cinematography posthumously. Sam Mendes direction was good.

Tom Hanks, Paul Newman, Jude Law and Daniel Craig were all very good.

Watched Carnage Two pairs of parents hold a cordial meeting after their sons are involved in a fight, though as their time together progresses, increasingly childish behavior throws the evening into chaos.

The movie does not have much of a plot and it is deliberately dragged like anything. In fact there are a couple of points where they are leaving and come back for silly reasons just because the director wanted to make a whole movie about the two couples fighting.

Having said that I still found much of it entertaining. Kate Winslet puking scene was hilarious.

Christoph Waltz was the best. His expressions and his subtle needling was excellent. John C. Reilly was good. Jodie Foster was very good as the uptight liberal and obnoxious woman. Kate Winslet was very good too.

    • hithere 11 years ago

Like this movie even though there is nothing in the movie except those 4 characters.

Saw Django Unchained – All 4 leads were good and their role length in any other movie would be of lead. Kerry Washington’s facial expressions are very similar to what she does in ABC’s Scandal.

Watched The Sure Thing and The Dictator

The Sure Thing A college student plans a cross-country trip to get laid, but ends up traveling with a young woman. They hate each other, so naturally… The movie is basically a 80s version of It Happened One Night. It was enjoyable.

Wanted to watch this movie for quite some time since I heard that DDLJ is inspired/copied from this. The travel scenes in the first half of DDLJ are definitely inspired from The Sure Thing and there are similar scenes but they have made some changes though. Scene of them fighting over who sleeps on the bed and the bus station scene to purchase tickets are similar. She deliberately misses her bus though in the original. There is also the sudden rain scene when they have no place to go.

Differences: They are already in the same class and go on a trip from New England to LA. She goes to meet her boyfriend and he to meet The Sure Thing to get laid. They start off on a car with another couple but because of their constant fighting the couple dump them in the middle of the ride. The Sure Thing has a scene straight out of It Happened One Night when she takes a lift from some guy.

A very young John Cusack is good. Daphne Zuniga was very good. Nicollette Sheridan plays The Sure Thing. Tim Robbins is in a small role. Interestingly this movie is directed by Rob Reiner who also directed When Harry Met Sally four years later. Both movies have a couple riding cross country who are opposites and initially fight.

    —————–

The Dictator The heroic story of a dictator who risks his life to ensure that democracy would never come to the country he so lovingly oppressed.

The first 15-20 minutes till he comes to New York were absolutely hilarious but then the movie was hilarious at places but not so at many places. The humor was offensive, crude and politically incorrect and If one does not mind that they can enjoy the movie.

Its basically a satire of all the dictators and there are some sarcastic dialogues about the US. Some of the dialogues are very funny.

Sacha Baron Cohen was excellent. Anna Faris was a bit annoying. She was doing her usual dumb role in Scary Movie series. Ben Kingsley has a small role. Jason Mantzoukas as Nadal the scientist was good too.

I had seen some parts of it earlier but not completely. The odd thing i felt was anyone cud easily guess he is a ghost but ghost himself didn’t knw tht he is a ghost was stupid.

I had liked The Sixth Sense when I saw it back in 1999. Not many people could guess that he was a ghost back then because it was the first movie with that twist. Since then there have been many movies with similar twists so its easy to guess now.

Been wanting to watch the movie again since the time I watched Talaash because I have a feeling that I will have similar opinion as yours – “ghost himself didn’t knw tht he is a ghost was stupid”

    Game of Thrones(Season-1)

    S01(E07-E10) – Absa
    “Fucking” lutely Brilliant!!!!!

    The Last 4 Episodes were
    Awesomest of the lot and
took the Season to an All-Time High to what I otherwise thought was a very good series, no doubt about that but Not as
    ‘Stupendous’ as many had
    proclaimed it to be.

    Have heard many say that
Season-02 is ‘No Match’ to the Brilliance of S01.
    Hope they are proved wrong.

p.s – Looking forward to S02 now from tommorow(or maybe today itself!).
    🙂

    Haven’t read the GOT
    Novels/Books sadly.
Imma Huge Fan of LOTR Triology/ Huuuugggeeerrr Fan of the HP Series – both the Novels and the Movies.

GoT Series is ‘perfect’ for me.
I might as well read the books too at a later date.

As Opposed to many, I did
      Not like the ‘character’ of
      Tyrion Lannister much.
Yes, Dinklage is Good as Tyrion
      but there are several other
characters – more scheming and compelling in nature and in
      their potrayals.!

      .

Some of My Favourites Characters(until now i.e) :-

      Jaime Lannister
      Cersei
      Daenerys Targaryen
      Jon Snow
      Ned Stark
      Robb Stark
      Jorah Mormont

Watched Jack Reacher A homicide investigator digs deeper into a case involving a trained military sniper who shot five random victims.

Movie was good but a little slow paced. Tom Cruise dropping the gun and then getting into a fist fight with the villain at the end was total Bollywood style.

Tom Cruise was good. Rosamund Pike looked good but there was something odd about her acting. Had liked her in Die Another Day. Richard Jenkins, Werner Herzog, David Oyelowo and Robert Duvall were good too.

Watched His Girl Friday Hildy Johnson (Rosalind Russell) is about to get hitched to dull insurance agent Bruce Baldwin (Ralph Bellamy) — that’s if her ex-husband, ruthless newspaper publisher Walter Burns (Cary Grant), doesn’t succeed in winning her back in this battle-of-the-sexes screwball comedy.

Its a 1940 movie. Movie started off well with the ex-husband trying to get back his divorced wife and trying to steal her back from her fiance. But then the movie goes on a completely different track of some upcoming execution of a convicted murderer.

The movie was #19 on American Film Institute’s 100 Years…100 Laughs and has a 8.0 rating on IMDB but apart from the first 30 minutes the rest of the movie is not funny at all and annoying with all the fast talking. Not to mention that the ending makes her look like she never cared for her fiance.

Cary Grant was good especially in the first 30 minutes and so was Rosalind Russell. Ralph Bellamy was good as her fiance.

Watched The Others, Saheb Biwi Aur Gangster Returns, Battle Royal and E.T Extra Terrestrial

The Others – It was quite interesting but not scary & i believe as it was not so scary it’s climax justified the absence of fear through out the film. Thanks Suprabh for reccomendation, it was worth a watch & Kidman was sooooo grownup woman.

Battle Royal – Not sure who developed the concept first but Battle Royal released before the Hunger Games & it has school kids instead of real adults fighting for survival. Movie was good.

SBAGR – Slow paced with lots of twists and turns. Liked it again.

E.T – Kkrish is inspired from this, isn’t it? The film will entertain mainly children & there isn’t much for adults other thn appreciating the noble cause of making a film for children.

    Watched Miral and Serpico

Miral A drama centered on an orphaned Palestinian girl growing up in the wake of Arab-Israeli war who finds herself drawn into the conflict.

Did not like the movie. It is set against the backdrop of the Israeli occupation of Palestine but it tried to be too many things at the same time with the back story of Miral’s mother and so on. The movie should have just been about Hind al-Husseini the creator of the orphanage instead of Miral.

Frieda Pinto was bad as Miral. Hiam Abbass was good as Hind al-Husseini and so was Alexander Siddig as Frieda Pinto’s father.

The Bombay theme by Rahman has been used a couple of times in the movie.

    ———————–

Serpico is based on the true story of undercover cop Frank Serpico who is threatened and wounded for refusing to take part in corruption.

Movie was good but quite slow paced. Al Pacino was very good as the honest cop frustrated with the system. He was nominated for an Oscar for Best Actor.

The movie was entertaining in parts and some scenes were very good. It had the potential of being a very good movie but ended up being a documentary on her life.

Meryl Streep was excellent and Jack Nicholson was very good. Jeff Daniels was good too. Its Kevin Spacey’s debut movie and he has a small part as a subway thief.

Watched Princess Mononoke – Another brilliant animation flick. A story about young prince Ashitaka who travels to the West in search of cure for the curse he was bestowed upon killing a demon god. He could only cure his curse by eliminating the hatred amongst the humans & animals. Loved everything about the film. Highly recommended.

In Bruges – I had seen this film more than twice but I could actually remember only the last scene of the film. Collin Farrell is excellent as Ray who finds himself guilty and regretful of one of the job gone wrong. The other character played as Ken by Brendon Gleeson is also very good. Liked the climax especially the conversation between Ken and Harry (Ralph Finenese). It is slow paced but if you watch it in Blu Ray print you gonna like it very much for the beautiful visuals of Bruge.

The Secrete World of Arrietty – Wonderful, Soulful, Delightful, Refreshing and a Beautiful animated film it is. There are these little people (2-4inch tall) who call themselves “borrowers” living secretly hidden amongst the human beings. These people call themselves borrowers because they borrow (in other words steal) those things that don’t affect human beings if missed. One young boy suffering from heart problem comes to stay in the place (house) for peace accidently happens to see the young little girl Arrietty in the garden. The father of little Arrietty takes her to her first borrowing ( stealing 😉 ) where the boy recognizes her. So the family plan to move from their secrete hiding to another place far from this coz they believe that borrowers vanishes or killed if ever they are spotted by Human Beings. The chemistry is excellent. The voice again is excellent this time the young boy’s. The Second half is very good.

Internal Affairs 2002 – Korean movie that was later remade by Martine Scorsese as “The Departed”. Had seen the departed when it released but I think I liked “Internal Affairs” more than the Departed.

ABCD Any Body Can Dance – Wannabe movie and nothing else but the Dances were just amazing. The rain dance was better than rain dance of Step up series. It was like a highlight of Dance India Dance shows best episode. Zero Dark Thirty – Finally watched it. Delayed it thinking it is all about torture and stuffs like brutality against captured terrorist in order to get the lead to capture OBL, but I was completely wrong about it. The brutality shown against terrorist prisoners and realism in “Taxi to the dark side” is much more gruesome and brutal than Zero Dark Thirty. Really loved the “motherfucker”s performance who founds out the place of OBL. Really liked it, very well executed, trimmed well not to bore with the stuffs like investigation and other follow ups. Recommended.

Watched Safe Haven A young woman with a mysterious past lands in Southport, North Carolina where her bond with a widower forces her to confront the dark secret that haunts her.

Its written by Nicholas Sparks the writer of The Notebook and the movie was very scenic. There is a canoeing scene similar to The Notebook . The movie is partly Sleeping with the Enemy. There is a small little twist at the end which I did not expect in a movie like this. Some may find it creepy/cheesy and some may like it.

Julianne Hough looked very pretty and acted well. She looked like a younger version of Naomi Watts. Josh Duhamel was good. David Lyons was good as the husband and Cobie Smulders was ok.

Saw Safe House..Liked it very much though predictable.. it is gritty and some of the fight sequences are real good.

The Impossible – Good acting but it beats any Bollywood movie for stupid-ness, coincidences and melodrama..

Watched Cry Freedom South African journalist Donald Woods is forced to flee the country after attempting to investigate the death in custody of his friend the black activist Steve Biko.

Its based on a true story. The movie was excellent until the first half but then it dragged too much in the second half. Donald’s escape from South Africa was too detailed and too long and it looked very filmy. And there was a sudden flashback scene at the end which really did not make any sense. It was as if the director Richard Attenborough of Gandhi fame did not know what to do with the movie.

Denzel Washington was excellent as Steve Biko and was nominated for an Oscar for Best Supporting Actor. Kevin Kline was good. Rest of the cast was ok.

Background score was very good especially at places and the African songs sounded good. Found out that the movie was also nominated for Best Original Score and Best Original Song.

Watched Boogie Nights (1997) the Journey of an 17 year old Boy…….set in late 70’s and early 80’s.
Very good movie…. Mark Wahlberg as Eddie Adams / Dirk Diggler did full justice to his character….all other supporting cast were also good.
just didn’t liked the ENDING….Ending could have been better Rest very good..!!

Watched Breakdown When his SUV breaks down, Jeff lets his wife Amy hitch a ride with a trucker to get help. When she doesn’t return Jeff tracks down the trucker who tells the police he’s never seen him.

Its a action thriller – a Hollywood masala movie. It was entertaining for the most part even though parts of it were silly or unbelievable. The ending was bad – it was way OTT and dragged a lot.

Kurt Russell was very good as the desperate husband searching for his wife. J. T. Walsh was very good as the bad guy. Just found out that this was one of his last movies and he died of heart attack. He was also in A Few Good Men. Performances by all the bad guys were very good.

Watched Journey of Hope which won the 1990 Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film. Its the story of a poor Turkish family who tries to emigrate illegaly to Switzerland.

The protagonists came across as naive and almost careless/reckless as they take their son along while illegally entering Switzerland. And it almost looked like a Switzerland PR movie as it was made by the Govt of Switzerland and the director being Swiss.

But then there is a tragic ending which may make you sad or angry. The performances by the father, mother and everyone else was good. The kid was cute and acted well too.

Game of Thrones is perfectly *tailor made* for fans of LOTR/HP like you and me.

Watched The Brass Teapot 2012 starring Juno Temple and Michael Angarano….its a story about an ancient Magical Teapot which gives u money when u heard someone..but this teapot increases the Greed in u …so to how much extent u will go to get lots of money!!

its a good plot with engaging Screenplay and decent Acting….only thing which i found somewhat wrong was the length of the movie , length could have been 10-15 min short…..but still its more than a decent watch..!!
