Inside_Llewyn_Davis Official Synopsis: Inside Llewyn Davis follows a week in the life of a young folk singer as he navigates the Greenwich Village folk scene of 1961. Llewyn Davis (Oscar Isaac) is at a crossroads. Guitar in tow, huddled against the unforgiving New York winter, he is struggling to make it as a musician against seemingly insurmountable obstaclesβ€”some of them of his own making. Living at the mercy of both friends and strangers, scaring up what work he can find, Llewyn’s misadventures take him from the baskethouses of the Village to an empty Chicago clubβ€”on an odyssey to audition for a music mogulβ€”and back again.

The movie is based on the memoir of folksinger Dave Van Ronk “The Mayor of MacDougal Street” and the title of the movie is from his album Inside Dave Van Ronk but all the important characters are inspired from different real life folk singers. Those interested can read this excellent article from Slate on The People Who Inspired Inside Llewyn Davis. Link

Some scenes were very good like the one where he lashes out at Mrs. Gorfein for singing his dead partner’s part or the “Please Mr Kennedy” song scene and the drive scene to Chicago or the scene where he demands the dues that he paid. The soundtrack is very good and all the songs are played in full and were performed live. There is the famous 500 Miles song also. Cinematography is very good capturing the 60’s New York and has been nominated for an Oscar for Best Cinematography.

Oscar Isaac is excellent as the struggling folk singer coming to terms with his partner’s death and braving the cold winter and living on other people’s couches. His character is also obnoxious sometimes and so one does not feel that much sympathy for him. Carey Mulligan is good as the woman he knocked up and who hates him. Justin Timberlake is good in a small cameo. John Goodman is good as the garrulous Roland. Garrett Hedlund is good as the laconic poet.

This is not a movie for everyone though and many might find it boring and even hate it. The final scene might also confuse some. The movie is essentially a homage/tribute to the 60’s folk singing era and the singers who are too sincere to compromise. People who are well versed with the songs and singers of that era would be able to appreciate the movie more.

I’ve heard that it’s in the vein of The Big Lebowski in regards to portraying the mundane life of the title character and the laziness of the environment as a whole. Is it true?

Blue Jasmine – Fabulous movie with an excellent performance from Cate Blanchett. The movie is about the character Jasmine and her troubled life after her husband commits suicide in jail for the empire, he created from different fraudulent businesses. As she is accustomed to different rather luxurious lifestyle, finds it hard to settle down with her sister and her sister’s stupid & idiot (according to her) fiance.

Some scenes from the movie like self blabbering, suddenly passing out into to the past for moments, her elegant style, behavior and quarrel scenes are praise worthy and commendable. Didn’t like her sister’s role or was that role supposed to make us feel uncomfortable? if yes then again commendable.

Liked the ending twist as well the way film ended. I myself didn’t know where/how the movie will end or should end but I think the ending is perfect.

    High Plains Drifter (1973)

Clint Eastwood plays a mysterious gunfighter (The Stranger) hired by the residents of a corrupt frontier mining town to defend them against a group of criminals.

Loved it. Clearly influenced by Eastwood’s movies with Sergio Leone. I’m a sucker for westerns and it’s heartbreaking to see that the genre is almost dead today. Eastwood continues his lone drifter persona in this eerie tale.

The acting is superb (especially the dwarf guy), action minimum but effective and the landscape is natural and pure. The ambiguity of the character of the Stranger is debatable and hence creates an aura around him. Also, Dee Barton’s creepy score adds to the spooky persona of Eastwood’s stranger. Ultimately, it’s a tale of retribution and the moral – As you sow, so shall you reap.

All Is Lost An unnamed man (Redford) wakes to find his 39-foot yacht taking on water after a collision with a shipping container left floating on the high seas. With his navigation equipment and radio disabled, the man sails unknowingly into the path of a violent storm. Using only a sextant and nautical maps to chart his progress, he is forced to rely on ocean currents to carry him into a shipping lane in hopes of hailing a passing vessel. But with the sun unrelenting, sharks circling and his meager supplies dwindling, the ever-resourceful sailor soon finds himself staring his mortality in the face.

The movie has just Robert Redford and almost no dialogues. Its like Life of Pi without the Tiger and no back story.

Robert Redford was good as the calm and composed sailor in the face of the crisis. But his character also seemed stupid in that he was unprepared and was reading on stuff at the last minute.

Dedh Ishqiya – Good movie with decent performances. Did not live up to the extent of Ishqiya for me. Had less of a shock value and was indulgent in parts. Arshad Warsi was fantastic, Naseeruddin Shah was good, Madhuri was good but had an underwhelming part, while Huma Qureshi did well with the scope she got. Vijay Raaz was cartoonish. The music, although good, acted as a blocker with most songs slowing down the movie. Dialogues are fantastic, especially the urdu shayari is brilliant in places. Overall, a pretty good movie, but dont go in expecting a Madhuri show all the way, because it is not.

In Bruges – A quirky movie with some interesting twists and great background music. Loved the laidback way in which the story unfolds. Colin Farrell is good but I am not convinced this is a Golden Globe worthy performance. Brendon Gleeson is very good. Direction is great and dialogues are well-written. The movie is slow and can test your patience at times but I liked it’s quirky quality, which keeps you hooked. Recommended if you like movies like Vicky Christina Barcelona and A Midnight In Paris. I know these movies are different in terms of story/genre, but found them similar in feel.

Jai Ho – Terrible direction, bad acting, cringeworthy dialogues, and boring to the core! Salman tries hard to bring some excitement and credibility to the proceedings but is saddled with a serious character that takes itself too seriously. A couple of scenes are okay – like where Salman suggests the idea and the one between Mahesh Manjarekar and the drunkard, but that is hardly 5 mins of the movie. Tabu is competent. Nadira Babbar is so irritating and has the worst dialogues! Sudesh Lahiri track is bad. Daisy Shah is no heroine material. That whole pinky-chota chooha track was pathetic and inappropriate (same level as the kid in Ra.One saying Condom Condom), although the kid Naman Jain acts well. Songs are poor. Production values are shockingly low! Sohail Khan spoils the movie completely with his direction. The whole movie is formulaic and doesnt manage to even do formula well. It is neither entertaining, nor well-made. If they had avoided all the over-the-top action scenes and the unnecessary comedy, it could at least have been a mediocre but focused social msg movie. The good intentions are visible, but the bad execution cannot be overlooked. A director like Rajkumar Hirani would have made this into gold, but then Salman wouldnt have worked in the movie, coz in his own words, he doesnt do good movies, only hit movies. πŸ™‚ Soon, he will be doing only flop movies if he carries on like this.

    Watched a few recently

Contagion – the movie is about a deadly virus which causes an epidemic across the world similar to Swine flu. Liked the movie. It focuses on how it affects the lives of various people across the globe under such circumstances – the pain of losing near and dear ones, the fight to get the magical medicine, the fight against time to develop a vaccine, the fight across nations to get allotment of the vaccines, and a ambitious reporter keen for his share of fame and money. Though the narrative is more matter-of-fact rather than dramatic,it works very well and manages to hold your attention throughout. It has quite a few medical jargons which I couldnt fathom but that didn’t take away anything from enjoying the movie. And probably, you will learn a few new things from the movie as well. Matt Damon, Kate Winslet and Jude Law were good in their respective brief roles. Recommended!

    Love Actually
this movie have been recommended by a lot of people in this forum and other places and enjoys very high ratings in IMDB and other sites. But, I absolutely hated this movie. This seems like one of those festival movies (Christmas) where you bring together a huge ensemble cast just for the heck of it to mint some easy money. The movie has so many stories going on in parallel and fails to do justice to any of them. There is no emotional connect to any of the characters. Also, the stories are mostly cliched. I understand that Salaam-e-Ishq is probably inspired from this. That was the first movie I watched after marriage with my wife and we walked out of the theater sometime after the interval. history repeats itself – we couldn’t finish this as well πŸ™

Ha Ha. I did not like Love Actually much either. My comment on it.

“Movie started of well and it has some funny lines. Part of it is good but it has a lot of cheesy stuff specially with the Christmas truth telling stuff. Hugh Grant playing British Prime Minister was totally ridiculous. Him going around to meet the girl at the end or castigating the US president scenes were so cheesy. Liam Neeson encouraging his kid to go after the girl and the airport scene was so cheesy and unrealistic for a movie that released after 9/11. The couple who are the body doubles shooting the nude scenes part was so bad – mainstream movies don’t usually have scenes that mirror porn scenes and they were not playing porn stars.

Hugh Grant was doing his usual stuff. Emma Thompson, Colin Firth, Liam Neeson, Laura Linney, Alan Rickman, Keira Knightley, Rowan Atkinson, Billy Bob Thornton were all ok. Bill Nighy was excellent as the aging rock and roll legend.”

    When Harry met Sally –
Wanted to watch it for a long time but somehow dint manage to do so. I guess Hum Tum is inspired from this one. I loved the movie – the tongue-in-cheek humor, the cracking chemistry between the leads and fabulous dialogues. Some of the scenes were really hilarious like the one where Meg Ryan fakes an orgasm in a crowded restaurant. It also raises some questions on the friendship between a man and a woman but in a very entertaining way.. personally, i agree with what Harry says in the movie πŸ™‚ I think this probably is regarded as a cult movie in the romantic comedy genre and rightly so. Probably, everyone here has already seen it. If not, watch it as soon as possible.

    @cr7,

    Yes. My comment.

“Watched Vishwaroop The movie started off decently with some comic scenes but once the movie went into flashback mode in Afghanistan it went on and on. Then the climax is way too long. Movie is very filmy and kind of tacky especially the US attack scenes in Afghanistan or the final scenes in US. A lot of scenes are quite amateurish and silly. There was nothing offensive in the movie so don’t understand what the controversy was about.

Kamal Haasan was good when he was doing the effeminate part early on and later in Afghanistan too. Nasir was good. Rahul Bose was bad as usual with a glass eye. Pooja Kumar was good specially in comic scenes. Don’t know why Shekhar Kapur agreed to do the cameo.”

My opinion is similar.. Its a decent one time watch.
After you watch movies like Zero Dark Thirty, this seems very amateurish.
The initial portion was interesting but it became a drag later on. And I agree, it was too filmy at times.

I dint find anything offensive in the movie at all. And I dont understand why the budget of the movie was claimed to be 100 crores … I wonder where has all the money gone.

    Miss Lovely
Strong, depressing, grim and ultimately tragic. This is the most believable and honest story I’ve seen in recent times. Set against the backdrop of the 80s C grade industry, Miss Lovely hits one hard and offers a bleak resolution for the protagonist’s aspirations and wishes. There’s no good, fluffy or one uplifting scene in the movie. It’s a downward spiral for almost all the characters.

Story revolves around Sonu (Nawaz) and his brother Vicky Duggal (Anil George), who makes C grade movies, and their deteriorating relationship. Sonu wants to free himself from the grime of the industry and claim the love of his life Pinky (Niharika Singh). But things go from bad to worse and Sonu wishes he never should have seen Pinky.

Loved the uncompromised vision of Ashim Ahluwalia and the ability of all the actors to pull it off. Niharika Singh deserves more spotlight. Closest thing comes to mind is Boogie Nights, but both are different movies. The 80s nostalgic stuff wasn’t distracting. Doesn’t come of as pretentious or indulgent, or pseudo intellectual, but honest and hence depressing. Easily my favourite Hindi movie of this year.

Mickey Virus – A funny, surprising, different and witty movie with excellent performance from Manish Paul. He never looked as if its his first movie. He was totally dominating in the film as well as other characters. He has done his job fantastically. He is a Hero Material, a lot better than Ayushman. Elli Avram is also very good in her sweet little constrained character. Movie pace is also very good and hold your attention till the climax. I never got bored for a single moment except post Climax. Recommended!!!

What Maisie Knew In this updated rendering of the timeless Henry James novel, a perceptive 6-year-old girl becomes a bargaining tool when she gets caught in the midst of a toxic custody fight between her self-seeking, childish parents.

Beautiful sensitive movie about a 6 year old girl and the impact that her parents divorce has on her. What’s different about the movie is that both the parents are shown as irresponsible whereas the stepfather and the stepmother are very caring. There is no melodrama.

Onata Aprile looked very cute and was excellent. Steve Coogan was ok as the dad. Julianne Moore was ok but seemed miscast as a singer. Alexander SkarsgΓ₯rd was good as the stepfather. Joanna Vanderham looked pretty and acted very well as the stepmother.

Fargo Police chief Marge Gunderson — a serious sleuth who’s sharper than her folksy accent suggests — is hot on the trail of a Minneapolis car dealer conspiring with two kidnappers to snatch his wife so he can pocket part of the hefty ransom.

Finally watched the movie. Had been on my watch list for a long time. The movie is a dark comedy and I liked it. The movie begins with the text that is a true story but the Coen Brothers lied and there is the usual fictitious disclaimer at the end after all the credits.

‘Joel and Ethan Coen’s black comedy/thriller about extortion, murder and absolute ineptitude opens with the following words: “This is a true story. The events depicted in this film took place in Minnesota in 1987. At the request of the survivors, the names have been changed. Out of respect for the dead, the rest has been told exactly as it occurred.”

The Coens lied. “Fargo” is complete fiction. When the deception was revealed, some accused the filmmakers of cheating their audience. Even star William H. Macy, upon discovering that the film he was making wasn’t fact-based, told the Coens, “You can’t do that!” To which the visionary writer-director team responded, “Why not?”

Joel Cohen told “Time Out” that “if an audience believes that something’s based on a real event, it gives you permission to do things they might otherwise not accept.”‘ Link

The atmosphere/ambiance was very good with the whole setting in Fargo and I actually thought it was a 80s movie. The movie was nominated for 7 Oscars and won Oscar for Best Original Screenplay. The Cinematography was very good and it was nominated for an Oscar.

Frances McDormand won an Oscar for Best Actress but I did not like her acting at all. Felt like she was trying too hard to be quirky with the accent and her open mouthed expressions and eyes. Diane Keaton in Marvin’s Room was way better than her. William H. Macy was very good as the loser husband and he was nominated for a Best Supporting Actor. This makes it three actors (Macy in Fargo, James Woods in Ghosts of Mississippi and Edward Norton who should have actually won for Primal Fear) who were better than Cuba Gooding Jr who won the Oscar for Best Supporting Actor that year. Steve Buscemi was good but his role was similar to the roles he usually plays. Peter Stormare was very good as the pyscho who doesn’t speak much. Harve Presnell was good as the father-in-law.

    Sputnik,
Haha…. The problem with When Harry Met Sally was that it was too long and with toooo many conversations between the leads which was kind-off heading nowhere.

Having said that, I really LOVE the first half hour of WHMS when they are young and travel from their college to some place. That was easily the best part of the movie which takes place in different stages of their lives and I think the entire car-trip sequence was fantastically written and acted.

I also loved the ultra-famous “I’ll have what she is having” scene (I actually had no idea that this scene was HUGELY famous and shit while watching WHMS).
Between, Love Actually and WHMS, I will deffo. go for Love Actually.

Some days back, I saw P.S. I Love You which is quite a charming and a pleasant watch, exactly in the leagues of 50 First Dates and (500) Days of Summer.

Good, breezy writing content, terrific chemistry and acting between the leads and the entire rom-com touch to the movie makes these movies quite a good/pleasant watch.

Of course, The NOTEBOOK and AWTR are in different leagues all together. Have seen ESOTSM but badly need a re-watch.

Undisputed 3 – Thanks to Babaji for recommending this. This is an out and out action movie and a fest for action lovers like me. The training and fight scenes are superbly done and the performances are superb as well. Scott Atkins was superb as Boyka – great intensity! Though there is not much of a story, but the screenplay manages to hold your attention throughout. A must watch for action movie lovers

Insiduous – I must admit that I am not a big fan of horror genre and there only a handful of movies which I have really enjoyed in this genre. Watched this movie based on some recos here and there and I must say I am disappointed. The plot itself is pretty silly and there are hardly any scenes which scare you. At the end, I was hoping for the movie to just finish. I think Raaz 3 is loosely based on this which was equally bad.

High Plains Drifter – Thanks Saurabh for the reco. I enjoyed the movie. It is slow paced and focuses more on building the atmosphere with superb cinematography and some great background score which absorbs you. The climax is the best part of the movie and gives a supernatural feel to the movie and gives a lasting feeling. It may not be Eastwood’s best work but definitely a good watch for lovers of this genre.

Nebraska After receiving a sweepstakes letter in the mail, a cantankerous father (Bruce Dern) thinks he’s struck it rich, and wrangles his son (Will Forte) into taking a road trip to claim the fortune. Shot in black and white across four states, Nebraska tells the stories of family life in the heartland of America.

Very good movie but its very leisurely paced though. Its from the director of The Descendants which I had liked a lot too. The movie has been nominated for 6 Oscars including Best Picture, Best Director and Best Original Screenplay. Its about the relationship between old parents and the children. There are layers to each character and they are not what they initially appear to be.

Bruce Dern was excellent as the old man who thinks he won the million dollars and he has been nominated for an Oscar for Best Actor. I did not recognize that he was the same actor who played Mia Farrow’s husband in The Great Gatsby. Will Forte was very good as the caring son. June Squibb was excellent as the bitchy mother and she has been nominated for Best Supporting Actress. Stacy Keach and Bob Odenkirk were good too.

    Rosemary’s baby

It’s a masterpiece and a landmark film in this genre. After a long time, I felt WOW after watching a movie. It’s not your normal horror movie – it does not use scary looking ghosts or cheap jump scares or loud background music. Rather, it focuses on building the tension and mystery in the mind of the viewer. This is one of the best screenplays I have ever seen The screenplay and the overall atmosphere it manages to create completely absorb the viewer. The climax is a bit of a letdown but otherwise, this is a flawless movie. Probably, this is Polanski’s best work. A must, must watch for everyone.

PS – I dont know if it can be classified as a horror movie or not but most places it is considered to be one.

Manhattan In this insightful slice of life, television writer Isaac Davis — who’s in the throes of a midlife crisis — finds himself torn between an adoring high schooler and his best friend’s high-maintenance mistress.

Did not like it. It was boring and it had the usual neurotic autobiographical stuff from Woody Allen. The movie has Woody Allen as a 42 year old dating a 17 year old girl which is creepy. A few lines here and there were funny and some you have to google to get the joke.

The movie is similar to Woody Allen’s Annie Hall which I had watched more than 10 years ago and had not liked that one either. Annie Hall had won Oscars for Best Picture, Best Director, Best Original Screenplay and Best Actress.

Woody Allen was his usual talkative neurotic self. Diane Keaton was ok. Meryl Streep has a very small role and she was very good as usual and she looked gorgeous. Mariel Hemingway was ok as the 17 year old girl and she was nominated for an Oscar for Best Supporting Actress.

Gravity Dr. Ryan Stone (Bullock) is a brilliant medical engineer on her first shuttle mission, with veteran astronaut Matt Kowalski (Clooney) in command. But on a seemingly routine mission, disaster strikes. The shuttle is destroyed, leaving Stone and Kowalski completely aloneβ€”tethered to nothing but each other and spiraling out into the blackness. The deafening silence tells them they have lost any link to Earth…and any chance for rescue. As fear turns to panic, every gulp of air eats away at what little oxygen is left. But the only way home may be to go further out into the terrifying expanse of space.

Did not like it. Except for the Cinematography and the Vfx the movie has nothing. It just has a hyperventilating Sandra Bullock overacting like anything. Can’t believe that she has been nominated for Best Actress for this. I can’t stand characters who bring it upon themselves and here she not only endangers her life but also of others by not listening. Clooney is pretty much there to put on his charm and provide some comic relief. Hated one scene of his which seemed so ridiculous in a movie like this. And what the hell was Sandra in those shorts for?

The movie certainly does not deserve the Best Picture and Best Actress nominations that it has got. It will probably get the technical awards – the Cinematography, Visual Effects and Sound ones.

Stand Up Guys This tough-guy comedy follows the rambunctious reunion between three retired gangsters and their reminiscences of wild times and crimes gone by. Energized by their own memories, the drunken friends unwisely undertake a reckless criminal adventure.

Its nothing great but its a time pass comedy. There is a scene of Al Pacino with a hard on and a couple more scenes where they visit a brothel. The car chase scene was very good.

Al Pacino was usual – good in parts and loud in parts. Christopher Walken was good in a mellowed role but looked old. Alan Arkin was very good. Julianna Margulies was ok. Mark Margolis was good in a small cameo. Addison Timlin was very cute and charming.

Philomena Falling pregnant as a teenager in Ireland in 1952, Philomena was sent to the convent of Roscrea to be looked after as a β€œfallen woman”. When her baby was only a toddler, he was taken away by the nuns for adoption in America. Philomena spent the next fifty years searching for him in vain. Then she met Martin Sixsmith, a world-weary political journalist who happened to be intrigued by her story. Together they set off for America on a journey that would not only reveal the extraordinary story of Philomena’s son, but also create an unexpectedly close bond between them.

The movie is good though it kind of loses track in between. It does make you angry and sad at what happened to those women and their kids.

The movie is adapted from the book “The Lost Child Of Philomena Lee” which itself was based on a true story. It takes a lot of cinematic liberties. The joint trip to US never happened in real. There is a confrontation scene between the nun and the journalist which never happened in real because she was already dead by then. Link Also the movie tries to make the two characters opposites with the journalist being a non believer and Philomena being devout who still defends religion. Philomena is portrayed as almost naive/dumb who still believes the nuns lies. While the real Philomena herself lost faith. Here is the interview with the real Philomena and she comes across as much smarter than what Judi Dench portrayed and she even says the same.

Steve Coogan was very good as the journalistic especially in the scenes where he was angry at the nuns. Judi Dench acted well but did not like her character.

A fistful of dollars – Absolute classic in the Western genre…masterpiece! Direction, performance, cinematography, music – brilliant. Not to be missed! Will watch the 2nd instalment – A few dollars more – soon. Hope its as good as this one.

Her – Beautiful movie and has a lot of layers. The screenplay deserves a lot of credit for able to keep the viewer interested for more than 2 hours on such a topic. Scarlett Johannsaon was amazing with her voice over. Also, the production design, cinematography and the music manages to create a great ambiance. There are lot of things in the movie which is left tto the viewer’s interpretation. I expect the movie to win the best original screenplay along with some other Oscars. It will be good to have some discussions about the movie if people are interested. Must watch!

Had watched Her last month and liked it a lot. I think it will win the Best Original Screenplay Oscar too. My comment on it.

“Liked it. Its very different and I think this should and will win the Oscar for Best Original Screenplay. This is a movie which some will like it and many might hate it or find it boring/pretentious or even creepy/weird. Now some of it seemed a bit odd – that people would still be wanting to write personal letters in the future.

Joaquin Phoenix was excellent and he should have been nominated for a Best Actor at the Oscars. Christian Bale, Leonardo DiCaprio and Chiwetel Ejiofor getting nominated for their performances ahead of him is a joke. Amy Adams was ok. Rooney Mara looked pretty. Olivia Wilde was good in a small cameo. Scarlett Johansson was good as the voice of the operating system.”

Finished Season 2 of House of Cards same day it released on Netflix. Did not expect them to better Season 1 but they managed to do that! The entire season is very well written and executed and there is seldom scope for boredom to set in. The storyline moves ahead at a fast pace with new characters and plots introduced and taken to conclusion. Kevin Spacey kills it yet again with a fantastic performance. Robin Wright is even better in this season than last. The supporting cast does well, especially Michel Gill as President Walker.

    !!Spoilers!!

The shocking twist in episode 1 sets the tone for more revelations to come in the season. The thrilling first episode is followed up by 5 riveting episodes after which the pace slows a bit for a couple of episodes before picking up feverish pace until the rollicking end. Looking forward eagerly to season 3. I hope that one is the last, since it will be good to see a good series end on a high instead of dragging out for 2 more seasons than originally planned. Would love to discuss finer points with any other House of Cards fans here. πŸ™‚

@zacked -Tough luck against Bayern .We started well but it was impossible win against bayern with 10 men . But I think we still have a solid chance of winning the league & FA cup.And damn wenger wasted the january window .Should have brought a striker . Lack of a clinical finisher may cost us the trophy this season .

    • Zacked 10 years ago

Yes agree. If it was 11 v 11 we would have won the game. The red was pretty hard and Robben made most of the contact.
Do you think we can turn the tables against Bayern away like last year. I hope we do. Yes Wenger wasted another window but then i dont think any decent striker was available. Could have got Klose maybe if he tried.

Captain Phillips In this exciting adventure based on true events that made international headlines, Tom Hanks portrays Capt. Richard Phillips, who is taken hostage by Somali pirates after they hijack his cargo ship, and the U.S. Navy’s efforts to rescue him.

The movie was very good till they got on to the lifeboat and it kind of lost track after that. It dragged a lot with the whole Navy Seal rescue operation and it also became a masala movie.

Some of the scenes seemed implausible and it turns out those did not happen that way in real life. The leader of the pirates has a gun and he is looking for guys hiding below when he is overpowered and taken hostage in the movie. But in the real incident he was unarmed which makes more sense. Also in the movie the gun just disappears after that – when he is brought for the exchange they have a knife pointed at him. If they have his gun why would they point a knife at him during the exchange operation?

Also Captain Phillips not getting out of that lifeboat and instead teaching them how to drive looked so stupid and like wanting to be kidnapped. And that Seat 15 scene was so stupid. The guys were speaking/understanding English so how do they not get suspicious when he says Seat 15 bit twice. Captain Phillips writing that letter and attacking the other guy looked so filmy and turns out that did not happen in real life. Link

Tom Hanks was very good and so was Barkhad Abdi. The other pirate guys were good too.

Dallas Buyers Club – I think this film was made keeping Oscar in mind. Film was long boring with mix of few ridiculous and implausible scenes along with some brilliant emotional scenes. Instead of a serious movie they should have given importance to entertainment a little bit so that audience didn’t had to take a power nap in between. The actor though was outstanding in his performance and had same accent and dialogue delivery style that of we are marshall movie. Another overrated movie that should be in Sputnik’s Post πŸ˜›

Hunger Games 2 – What a ridiculous movie. Few flop South Indian movies that released this year are better than the sequel of Hunger Games. Part 1 was OK but this is too stupid. If there was no part 1 and no Jennifer lawrence then it would have disappeared like a wind. One of the worst movies that I have seen this year.

    • Author
      sputnik 10 years ago

hmm I liked Dallas Buyers Club and it is one of the best movies of the year for me. Yes its a serious movie about AIDS which is very bleak/gloomy and there is not much entertainment in it. Mathew usually speaks in the same Southern accent in almost all of his movies and I had criticized him in the past for that. But in this case he was playing Ron Woodruff a guy from Texas and Mathew is also from Texas.

My comment on the movie –

“Very good movie. Liked it a lot. Its based on a true story but some things have been changed. Link 1 Link 2 They left out Ron’s sister and daughter from the movie and made the drug AZT and the FDA the villain. Also the characters Rayon and Dr. Eve Saks are based on composites of other real life people.

Matthew McConaughey is excellent as the homophobic guy who gets AIDS and who starts to smuggle and sell unapproved drugs. His character arc was also very good. He lost a lot of weight for the role and looks emaciated in the movie. He will obviously be nominated for an Oscar for Best Actor and I think he is going to definitely win the Best Actor award. Jared Leto was excellent as the transgender woman Rayon and I think he is most probably going to win the Best Supporting Actor Oscar. Jennifer Garner was ok as Dr. Eve Saks.”

Watched highway …din’t get any high.
It’s a very amateurish and inconsistent movie by Imtiaz. While some of the scenes are great, but those are followed inevitably by some kiddish/amateurish screenplay. Great cinematography, some amazing shots of Himachal, and the music also blends nicely. Alia Bhat is a revelation in such a challenging role – several times in the movie, there are pretty long solo shots where the camera is just focussed on her face and she does admirably well in those scenes as well. She falls flat in some scenes but overall, a superb performance considering its just her 2nd movie. And there is absolutely no chemistry between the leads…a big ZERO.

I guess Imtiaz is taking himself seriously or becoming self-obsessed or indulgent like Anurag Kashyap/Vishal Bhardwaj and losing his midas touch. I want the Imtiaz of JWM and SNT back
Rating – 2.5/5 (watchable coz of Alia, cinematography n music)

Inch’Allah A Canadian obstetrician living in Israel makes multiple passes through heavily guarded checkpoints to get to her job at a women’s health clinic in Palestine. But political tensions take on personal overtones when she befriends a pregnant patient.

The movie is in French. It was good but it was very slow paced and its kind of very bleak and depressing. Some scenes were very good. The ending/twist was excellent and very powerful.

Children of Men In this futuristic tale, humans have lost the ability to reproduce and face extinction. Things change when a single woman mysteriously becomes pregnant, prompting a conflicted government bureaucrat and his ex-wife to join forces to protect her.

Did not like it. This is one more cliched movie set in a post apocalyptic world where everyone is fighting. Movie reminded me of 12 Monkeys and also V for Vendetta. The plot is too unbelievable/ridiculous to take it seriously. Science Fiction movies which are about the future should be set in a time period where people currently living will never be able to reach. Its stupidly set in 2027 which is too close. This is one more overrated movie which is also directed by Alfonso CuarΓ³n, the director of Gravity. The movie also tries to pass off some political messages on illegal immigrants, govt and so on.

Clive Owen was good. Julianne Moore is bumped off soon. Michael Caine was usual. Clare-Hope Ashitey was good. Chiwetel Ejiofor was ok.

  47. Saurabh 10 years ago

Sputnik, while I get your point that we feel that there’s not much chance of such things happening in 2027, it’s not necessary that futuristic sci fi stories need to have societies which are much advanced in all respects compared to the current ones. The movie’s still a sci fi, even if it is set in 2015. That’s why it’s called science fiction. It may have it’s own alternate reality and timeline. What’s important is that the narrative respects these rules and constraints that the story has defined.

Many think Children of Men, along with Inception, is the best sci fi movie of the last decade. While I didn’t hate it, I thought it was good, but nowhere anything special like Inception. Yeah, the plot is cliched. The long tracking shot towards the end is great but screams of ” Hey, look at my direction, the fluidity with which I move my camera” attitude.

    • Author
      sputnik 10 years ago

I did not have a problem with the post apocalyptic part but the point is why set it so close to current time when you can set in any time period that you want. In a few years when we reach that time period the movie will feel so stupid. The movie did not show any technologically advanced stuff except for may be what Nigel’s son was doing with his hand. The movie did not really explain why all the women in the world had become infertile and the explosion scenes and all at the end made it look like the usual Hollywood movie.

And the long continuous shots weren’t really single takes. Here is a article that explains how it was done.

      “Merging and Blending Multiple Takes

For the coffee shop explosion scene, there were two “hero” takes to blend together. “On the first day, we shot the shop interior,” Churchill notes. “We would later add screen inserts for the televisions, and digital billboards outside. At the end of the shot, the camera would exit the shop door out onto the street and stop there. On the second day, the interior set was emptied and rigged with explosives and debris. The camera then duplicated the exit from the coffee shop and continued the move down the street. Our task was then to create the illusion of a continuous camera move. For this, both plates were tracked, stabilized, and stitched together merging different sections from both plates into the doorway. So, as we exit the door with Theo, we are seeing the pavement and people from the day two shoot, composited over the passing bus from day one. As the bus passes, the rear of it ‘wipes’ on the rest of the day two plate, revealing the buildings and traffic.”

Shot separately on greenscreen with a wire rig, a stunt couple was composited into the cafΓ© doorway to be “blown” across the street. Extra debris was also added in the shot to enhance the original explosion, and cracks applied to foreground windows. Finally, a new handheld camera move was generated, so the transition didn’t have a smooth stabilized feel to it.

Most of the transitions in the movie were completed on the environment while the camera was briefly panning away from the main actors. For the coffee shop scene though, Theo seems to remain in frame throughout the shot, but at the transition point, the camera cleverly pans off of him to show his reflection on a window. “You get the feeling that he was in camera throughout the shot, when actually, for a couple of seconds, you only saw his reflection… You just don’t notice it.”

Even more complex was a shot in which the camera follows Theo in the middle of an urban battlefield and inside a building. At one point, in a remarkable cinematic sleight of hand, the camera actually becomes the character’s point of view. The shot was captured in five separate takes over two locations. The exterior section of the shot was split into only two takes and the interior split into three. On top of the already demanding transition effects, Double Negative also had to deal with a huge amount of set and action enhancements. Some buildings were painted out, others were extended with extra stories, new structures were added in; hundreds of bullet hits were also composited in, using practical elements.

During the interior section of the shot, the environment remains visible behind windows. Since the plate had been shot with greenscreens, the team needed to replace them with a digital panorama of the exterior. First, digital stills of the exterior set were stitched together using proprietary software. The resulting panorama was mapped onto a 3D cylinder, which was then imported into a 3D scene containing the matchmove data from the tracked greenscreen plate. From the 3D package, the cylinder and the matchmoved camera were then exported into Shake via another in-house application, and the ‘Cyclorama’ was composited into the greenscreen windows.
Multiple takes were combined and tweaked to accomplish the final long shot of the anarchists’ attack on the car.

Multiple takes were combined and tweaked to accomplish the final long shot of the anarchists’ attack on the car.

The most complex shot of all probably was a nine-minute long scene in which the characters have an extensive dialog while driving a car, and are then ambushed by a group of anarchists, resulting in one of the character being shot dead on its seat. The shot was filmed in six sections and at four different locations over one week and required five seamless digital transitions. Moreover, the camera records the action with a continuous movement that would actually be impossible to create in reality. In many instances, the camera ends up shooting the actors from a seat where we had just seen another actor the second before…”

  49. Saurabh 10 years ago

@sputnik. I remember reading that article some time ago. Thanks for bringing it out though, which goes to explain the efforts some directors take in order to tell their stories in a unique way. It’s this cinematic sleight of hand that I’d credit Cuaron for, with COM and Gravity. I used to wonder why majority of our films since mid 2000 appear the same. Because there’s no ‘inventiveness’ in telling stories. Every movie has the same oversaturated, or fluorescent lighting or the same electronic ‘dhinchak’ tunes for songs which make it difficult to distinguish one movie from another (even those from our so called masters Bharadwaj, Kashyap, etc). Funnily, I can only make out a Rohit Shetty film when I see it (haven’t seen CE, so no idea about that one)

There’s something Mary is a fun movie. One time watch. Deewane Huye Paagal is a frame by frame lift and isnt as funny. In fact, it is terrible in parts.

I’ve ruined so many movies by watching the hindi version before the original . One that comes to my mind now is the killer . Watched it before the original “The Collateral” which was fantastic .
