Mini Review: I has moments of absolute brilliance but….

I

I have always been a big admirer of Shankar’s films. It is not his scale and never his vfx that interest me. Mostly they are plagiarized even though he is himself a very creative mind. It is the emotional connect that he builds with the audience and the statement he gives in every subject he takes up.

With his latest release I starring vikram, it is no different. He mocks the cosmetic industry and shows how shallow it is. The name “I” is not merely the virus in the film , it signifies the narcissistic and selfish attitude in us which is so fragile because it is never going to last.

The first half has some interesting scenes mainly due to Vikram’s acting. He plays a small town body builder who aspires to be Mr India. He is shown as a simpleton obsessed with his looks and physique. Even the heroine Amy Jackson is obsessed with her looks. Her casting looks bang on considering the concept of the film. The film runs back and forth in two timelines – one with good looking Vikram and other with the morphed ugly version. It the morphed ugly version who keeps you engaged throughout the film because all his scenes are almost MASTERPIECE.

The romance track in China is too long and gets on the nerve very soon. there are too many songs even though Isaak Tari and Tum Todo Na are excellently picturised. But once the morphed Vikram takes over in second half, things change. My favorite scene is the one where the ugly Vikram sees himself in mirror for the first time since the virus attack. The way he breaks down looking in the mirror while recollecting his early gym-physique days almost brought tears to my eyes. His revenge with each of the people behind his ugly look is very good but it has not been shown in a subtle way. Some scenes which should have been serious are made in a comic way and it lessens the impact. Some fight scenes are too long and they are not well choreographed. The fight scene of cycles on roof is copied from Tom Yum Goong 2. The film is a little too long and digresses quite often.

I would have given the film 2/5 but one extra star just for the end credits. Its a film in itself. It is touching and inspiring. Some would argue that Shankar has done that to give the film a “happy ending” but I loved it. The way it ended.

Rating: 3/5

    Good review @baba-ji

So your guess of Vikram the wrestler getting disfigured turned out to be true.

Will check this out soon 🙂

      thanks @sputnik

shankar has added so many unnecesary songs and romance scenes which were not needed. the concept of the film is brilliant and he should have stuck to it. some action scenes should have been trimmed. and it should have been used to add scenes from end credits.unlike usual bollywood films vikram doesnt become normal. he continues to remain ugly till the end and amy accepts him as he is. she takes care of him, regularly medicates him and teaches him yoga and other sports activies and gradually in a few years his pyhisque becomes normal while his face still remains somewhat distorted. I think instead of showing this in end credits he could have incorporated this in second half last 10-15 mins.

I was not interested in the movie initially .But I liked the songs .Story looks interesting . And Amy is looking gorgeous . Might give it a try when good print is available .

amy is a good actor apart from being good looking. her casting was perfect. vikram is great but this role needed some who is obessed with his looks in real life.

some are calling it a “revenge” film. it isnt that. calling it a revenge film is very limited way to look at it. the movie is not about revenge. vikram in the film is shown to be obessed with his phyique and looks . he got a job due to his looks. the ppl who are jealous of him disfigure him bcos that was his USP. he then disfigures them back bcos even each of them (the gay designer, upen, the industrilist and doctor) each of them were obessed with their looks too.

I loved the scene where vikram combs his hair and a bunch of his hair comes out on the comb. when he brushes in the morning, his tooth falls down right from its root.

I is a film that mocks cosmetics. its not a revenge film

some of the science shown in I is questionable though. vikram says he used minoxidil and other drugs which reduce the impact of dihydrotestosterone which promotes hair growth on the body of gay designer. but minoxidil and finasteride cant grow hair on every part of the body. they are used to treat androgenic alopecia.

Addicted to I soundtrack .Loved Tum todo na & Tu Chale . Heard the original ones too .Very well dubbed in Hindi .Even Issaq taari is good.

the picturisation of isak tari is very imaginative. tum todo na is a dream sequence and it has good picturisation and the song itself is very good. i didnt like tu chale.

I like when Amy transform into a phone in Issaq tari 😛

        • Baba 9 years ago

she transforms into a number of objects in the film and each time her breasts are highlighted the most 😛
