Matru Ki Bijlee Ka Mandola Movie Analysis – Roma Heer & Gautam Batra

matru ki bijlee ka mandola Gautam Batra: After a debacle with 7 Khoon Maaf, Vishal Bhardwaj is back with another film Matru Ki Bijlee Ka Mandola. Unlike other movies directed by Bhardwaj, thisone is a rom-com drama. Matru Ki Bijlee Ka Mandola has quite good face valuewithstars  like Imran Khan, Anushka Sharma & Pankaj Kapur playing the lead roles. Movie also stars Shabana Azmi & Arya Babbar in supporting roles. Matru Ki Bijlee Ka Mandola isdirected, co-produced, co-written by Vishal Bhardwaj and credits for music design of the film also go to him. As this is the first romantic-comedy venture by Vishal Bhardwaj sothere are quite good expectationsthat he will comeup with something excellent again. So lets have an analysis on the film.

Roma, tell us how did you find the movie?

Roma Heer: First thing first that you’ll be surprised to know is that MKBKM is not a romantic comedy as it was being promoted. It is an issue based movie. Secondly, it fails in depicting the issue also. It was a below average fair that was only saved by Pankaj Kapur’s performance.

Gautam Batra: What’s the story of movie?

Roma Heer: Matru Ki Bijlee Ka Mandola is story of Harry Mandola alias Haria, Mandola (Pankaj Kapur), a big businessman who eyes on the land of poor farmers of village to fulfill his dreams of setting up a big business empire. Mandola can doanythingto achieve what he wantsthereforehe along withminister Chaudhary Devi (Shabana Azmi) pressurize villagers to give their land to them. This doesn’t comes easy to villagers as the land is only mean of there survival.

Matru(Imran Khan) who is educated driver of Mandola secretly help the villagers to survive out of the problem. Bijlee(Anushka Sharma) daughter of Mandola whois all set to get married to Badal(Arya Babbar) son of Chaudhary Devi decides opposite as she falls for Matru and start helping him in the cause.

What happens next? Does Matru , Bijlee &villagerssuccessfully complete the cause? Do Matru & Bijlee marry each other? What about Badal & Bijlee’s marriage? Who wins in the end?  The questions are answered while the reels unfold.

Gautam Batra: Hmmm… Story is just opposite to what was being expected after seeing the trailers. Must have felt cheated?

Roma Heer: Seriously. Movie as from the trailers created perception of entertaining & fun filled movie. You naturally feel cheated after seeing an output just opposite to the expectations & perception, team created in audience’s mind for movie. Also the story had nothing new in it.

Gautam Batra: How was the Screenplay ?

Roma Heer:  Abhishek Chaubay & Vishal Bhardwaj’s screenplay is full of flaws. It fails to create connection with the audience. The thing that they serve just opposite to expectations is different, the irony is that they fail to depict the issue also. Romantic parts are forgettable and doesn’t create any impression. First part is quite good & interesting but the movie falls drastically in second half. Pace of the movies gets extremely slow & boring in second half giving just a tiring fair to the audience. Some dialogues & scenes specially those of Pankaj Kapur are excellent and generate laughter at times but that also get invisible in second half. Climax is predictable and simply not engaging.

Gautam Batra: Can’t believe that we are discussing a Vishal Bhardwaj’s movie! How was the Direction & Performances?

Roma Heer:  Vishal Bhardwaj’s direction is okayish and doesn’t impresses too much. Pankaj Kapur as Harry Mandola is the soul of movie and carries the whole movie on his shoulders. He acts fantastically in every scene he appears and proves himself to be power house of talent. It must be mentioned that actors like Pankaj Kapur, Paresh Rawal, Naseeruddin Shah are truly a treat to watch and should do more films.

Gautam Batra: Ssshhh Roma! If anyone from our new actors read that you wish veterans to work more, will mind it :P

Roma Heer: Haha! No offence to new actors but old is gold yaar :)

Gautam Batra: Ok, we were discussing performances. Tell us about rest of the star cast’s performance in movie

Roma Heer: Imran Khan seems to have grown up as an actor. He managed the role of Matru decently but to be frank he was over shadowed by Pankaj Kapur’s superbperformance. Most of the times he appeared just a side kick of Pankaj Kapur’s character. Anushka Sharma as Bijlee does nothing new. She appears same as her characters in past movies. Shabana Azmi as Chaudhari Devi isexcellent. Arya Babbar as Badal also acts well.

Gautam Batra: How was the music and other technical aspects?

Roma Heer: Music by Vishal Bhardwaj is fair with Oye Boy Charlie & Lootne Wale being the only impactful songs. Lyrics by Gulzar are very good. Choreography & Song picturisation by Dinesh, Bosco-Caesar & Saroj Khan is good. Sreekar Prasad’s editing could have been much better. Cinematography by Kartik Viay isfirst class.

Gautam Batra: What are the Good & Bad Points ?

Roma Heer:  Good Points

1. Some Performances

2. First half, Dialogues & few scenes

Bad Points

1. Poor Screenplay

2. Story with no novelty

3. Misleading promotions

Gautam Batra: What is your Final Verdict & Rating?

Roma Heer: Matru Ki Bijlee Ka Mandola is a completely boring & itchy drama. It hasnothing exciting despite of Pankaj Kapur’s performance. Watchit only if you are a die hard fan of Pankaj Kapur.

Rating : 2.5 / 5
