Jannat 2 Indian Express Movie Review by Shubhra Gupta

Jannat 2Cast: Emran Hashmi, Randeep Hooda, Esha Gupta, Manish Choudhary, Brijendra Kala

Director: Kunal Deshmukh

Indian Express Ratings:*1/2

Don’t be fooled. This is not a sequel to ‘Jannat’, in which match-fixing shenanigans in high profile cricket matches gave Emran Hashmi and Kunal Deshmukh a fertile hunting ground, and us a watchable film. ‘Jannat 2’ is, for the most part, a badly-done, badly-acted enterprise, lifted only a notch by a couple of performances.

In this one, Hashmi goes by the elongated name of Sonu Dilli, Kutti Kameeni Cheez. The tag should give you an idea of the kind of film this is : having the lead play one of those, you are not going to expect any delicacy or subtlety, are you? The shower of choice abuses, which only gets louder and more graphic, is self-defeating. How many ‘ch’ words can you hear without blanking out?

When he is not working hard atop a working girl, Sonu Dilli goes about transacting illegal ‘guns-ka-dhanda’ with shady characters. And wooing a pretty doctor (Gupta) whose cleavage has more heft than her never-seen stethoscope, in keeping with Bollywood’s notion of female docs. Randeep Hooda plays an anguished cop, whose wife was killed in an encounter with a fellow carrying just such a gun. You know how this will go : the cop enlists the ‘kameena kutta’ to help him track the baddies and their ‘kattas’, and we are in for the usual bloody skirmishes between the lawmakers and lawbreakers.

But this is a dispirited drag of a flick, with Hashmi going for crude and crass, and ending up grating. It’s not as if Hashmi does the clean-cut guy on a regular basis and is trying this for size. His standard USP is the character who has no compunction in being a street-wise low-lifer. But this KKC has nothing going for him. Hooda, accompanied by the realiable Kala, is the one who has the relatively better part, and makes the most of it.

Can anyone save us from ‘Jannat 3’? I fear not.
