Jab Tak Hai Jaan copied from Surya-Menon’s Vaaranam Aayiram?

From wiki : (Courtesy : Shiv Prasad Shetty)

The film begins with elderly Krishnan (Surya Sivakumar) returning home after a haircut. Once he reaches home he vomits a profuse amounts of blood and is kept to bed rest. After the doctor checks him, he is reported dead after a few moments of grief with his wife Malini (Simran Bagga), daughter Shreya, and daughter-in-law Priya (Divya Spandana). This news is informed to his son Surya (Surya Sivakumar) who is on a military mission traveling in a helicopter. He begins to shed tears and starts thinking about his memorable moments with his father and the story of how his parents loved each other during their college days.
Krishnan is a student in the same college where Malini studies. They fall in love and get married. They soon have a son, Surya. He grows up as a friend to his father. He joins an engineering college near Tiruchi and parts from his family. There he takes part in cultural activities and develops his guitar skills. When he is on a train back home after completion of college, he meets Meghna (Sameera Reddy) who is doing Engineering in National Institute of Technology Tiruchirappalli. He soon proposes to her. She rejects him, saying that they have known each other for a very short period and it’s not possible to fall in love without taking time to understand him. Surya then tells her that wherever she goes, he will meet her.
Surya is disturbed constantly by Meghna’s thoughts and consequently ends up going to her house. There she tells him that she is going to University of California, Berkeley in a week to pursue higher education. During that period Krishnan, Surya’s father, gets his first mild heart attack and is admitted to the hospital. Then on, an inspired Surya obtains projects and finally builds a house for his parents.
After that, he goes to the United States, with the acceptance of his father, and meets Meghna in San Francisco where they have the time of their lives. Meghna is convinced that he is the right person and that he will be accepted by her father. They go to a movie and later make love the same night. Their happiness does not last long when she goes to Oklahoma City for a project. Surya joins her later traveling by the Greyhound bus. When he reaches there, he witnesses the Oklahoma City bombing and realizes that Meghna is amongst those injured. She dies on her way to the hospital. A heartbroken Surya returns to India. He meets Shankar Menon at the airport who tries to console him with words and offers him encouragement. Surya still can’t take the situation.
He once again and starts hanging out with his friends to get over his loss. He meets Priya (Divya Spandana), his sister’s friend. However, the thoughts of losing Meghna still haunts him, and he resorts to taking drugs. Surya’s parents try to get him to break the habit by locking him up in his room and removing him from all external contact. Once they detect his withdrawal symptoms, they ask him to take a long break to rejuvenate himself. Subsequently, he takes a leisure trip to Kashmir. There he learns that Aditya, the son of Shankar Menon, the person who inspired him in the airport was kidnapped. He visits them in Delhi. On seeing the lethargic attitude of the police, he takes matters into his own hands and goes in search of the kidnappers. After days of roaming streets and gathering information, he locates the kidnapper (Prithviraj) and the place where Aditya is kept. He battles the kidnappers single-handedly, overpowers them and rescues Aditya.
Back home, Surya starts to go out with his sister and her friend Priya. One day Priya proposes to him, but he doesn’t respond. Surya decides that the only way to forget the pain in his body is to prepare it for bigger things. He goes on a strict workout training and joins the army. After six years, Priya comes to the Indian Military Academy where he is posted to meet him and proposes again; this time he accepts. They marry and have a son. Suddenly Krishnan is diagnosed with throat cancer and is operated on. After some days Surya is called upon to go on a mission to rescue a journalist which brings the scene back to the present day. After completing the military mission with the help of a masked man (Gautham Menon) who tells them where the culprits were, Surya returns home to see his dead father. Surya, his sister Shriya, Malini and Priya let go his father’s ashes in the sea and Malini relates her husband’s life to Surya by uttering a verse from a Hindu prayer. The film ends on a happy note as the four walk away smiling; conveying the message that “Whatever happens, Life has to go on.

Could not read this long story even after trying twice.

Here is the synopsis from IMDB

“Surya (Surya Sivakumar) is away at war as his father, Krisnan (also Surya) dies of lung cancer. As Surya sits on a plane in combat gear heading into battle, he reminisces about his father’s influence in his life. The film opens with the father Krishnan’s romance with Malini (Simram), which in turn is contrasted with the son’s aggressive courting of an engineering student Meghana (Sameera Reddy) from a train ride in Tamil Nadu to her graduate studies in Berkeley. The romance is swiftly followed by an extended period of professional and personal uncertainty, in which the son turns back to father figures to help him get back on his feet and seek out his true calling. Well made, though overlong film, reportedly autobiographical about the director’s own relationship with his father.”

I have also read this today in the comments somewhere. But dont think yrf will copy that film even if some parts may sound similar.

“Could not read this long story even after trying twice”

lol, yes its exhaustive and too much masala there.

Varanam Aayiram had a fantastic score by Harris btw.

ritz – the first thing that you do is rate all my posts 1/5. is it a psychological disease or you have any ex-NG grudges?

      • Ritz 7 years ago

I rated 1 to this as I disagree it could be a copy. 🙂

        • Baba Ji 7 years ago

this is not the first time you did this.you do this everytime.(even for a post like the first look of TYG 2)….not that ratings bother me but i am curious to know the reason for the hatred.is it bcos i have posting rights and u dont?

          • Ritz 7 years ago

I think I had liked Shahrukh the versatile actor post 🙂 I might have clicked dislike for others when I disagree and had even commented in few of them why I disagree – for example the CDI scene etc

no, its not because of posting rights or any hatred.

suprabh – one cant compete with sputnik in this arena.this is his terrain. He is working on a similar post for talaash since one year and will post it in November.

      • sputnik 7 years ago

Ha Ha LOL. I do plan to watch a lot of thrillers and suspense movies in November 😉

Usually when they create a website for a movie they also have the synopsis but JTHJ does not have any synopsis. Instead they have the stupid poem by Aditya Chopra and they are acting as if its some Nobel Literature Prize winning stuff. So wait for at least the synopsis to come out.

I don’t think JTHJ is copied/inspired from this movie.

Someone tweeted a picture of Katrina with handcuffs and if you see the trailer there is some accident. Anyways I think Rajeev Masand had tweeted even before the Challa song came out that SRK was playing a waiter and I think that much is confirmed from the latest song. He also mentioned some memory loss thing and some people on twitter who supposedly know the story are also hinting at that. Some are saying its HDDCS with reverse gender. Another person on twitter who supposedly knows the story of both JTHJ and CE said CE story was more interesting and JTHJ was nothing new.

The story of above mentioned movie is somewhat inspired from a novel ‘i too had a love story’ and ‘can love happen twice’. Although i dont knw which came earlier but both have the same plot

  5. Suprabh 7 years ago

Finally read the whole thing…First of all– there is hardly a decent story in there to get inspired ..I mean its just bland and unattractive at the script level…and second,,The wiki thing is so funny at times..

    sample this:

“Surya joins her later traveling by the Greyhound bus.”

LOL…who writes that in synopsis.. hahhaa

I dont understand the title and the content of the post. The content is just a review of the Tamil movie – which btw was a great movie with great music. Where is the connection – I dont understand – we havent seen any old SRK (thank god) yet.

Ritz – have you seen Thaandavam – i saw it last week – too long but loved Vikram in it. Waiting for Maatraan now

There are just too many movies to see suddenly – OMG, EV, SOTY, Maatraan, SKyfall, Taken2, then the Diwali releases, Talaash. Khiladi and Dabaang 2 – serious WTF!

    • Ritz 7 years ago

No, havent seen Thaandavam as I am not in a mood to watch an action southie flick 😛 But then Vikram is always great – isnt he?

Not looking forward to Maatraan either.. used to like Suriya earlier – but now he is kind of predictable and conscious of his looks and dance etc – more emphasis on looks than acting. I used to like him earlier as he was more raw as an actor. Even look wise, he looked his best t in Kaakha-kaakha / Pithamagan phase. Now worst thing is he is even a brand amassador of “fair and handsome”.

    I think #JTHJ going to be floped just like RA.one … 🙂

  8. sunil 7 years ago

I think there is one one srk here.Who lives in india, and then travels to uk.Yes,it could aslo be that the uk srk is the father of India srk.Consdering srk’s age,yrf might make it that way.

  9. Sneha 7 years ago

After reading the synopsis I felt ” Me Kaha hu ” … I got no lnink whatsoever to the story if there is any 😛 It seems more complicated then what Talaash seems to be 😀

    • sputnik 7 years ago

      LOL

We will only know if this is true only when there is a proper synopsis of JTHJ or when the movie comes out.

  10. Serenzy 7 years ago

I don’t Know wether it’s Copied OR Not but, Rishi Kapoor & Neetu Singh are Playing Shah Rukh’s Parents and Anupam Kher is Playing Katrina’s Dad!

  11. sunil 7 years ago

It appears that Armyman srk is the father and street performer srk is the son. This film could be a father son relationship, than a triangular love story.

  12. Reddemon 7 years ago

    😆 sunil kya prediction hai

Now i feel this should have been much matter.
Baba U shud have given this script to YRF/SRK 😆
