Is Aamir Khan bigger than Dadasaheb Phalke?

In a last minute twist to the tale, almost like a script written for Bollywood, superstar Aamir Khan failed to show up at the Government of India’s prestigious Dadasaheb Phalke Academy Awards in Mumbai last night.

The actor, who notoriously shies away from shows and declines awards himself, reportedly agreed to attend this function only because it commemorated 100 years of Indian cinema. And, his role would be to unveil a wax statue of Dadasaheb Phalke, who directed India`s first full-length feature Raja Harishchandra in 1913.

An organizer said they had written confirmation that Aamir would be present for the function, but he would stay for just half an hour, and they had planned to seat him next to Bollywood veterans Amitabh Bachchan and Vinod Khanna. After which, most controversially there was no show by Aamir.

According to sources, Aamir was very much in Mumbai last night, and busy promoting his ambitious television show Satyameva Jayate which will hit the small screens on Sunday. The actor is on a promotion overdrive, not missing out on any opportunity to speak about the show, and that is reportedly what he was supposedly doing – giving media interviews while other worthies of Bollywood waited in vain for him at the Dadasaheb Phalke Awards last night. The organizers of function repeatedly tried to reach the superstar, but Aamir is said to have not even reverted. And so it was left to Amitabh Bachchan, Dilip Kumar, Saira Banu and Subhash Ghai to make the most of the occasion.

The Big B unveiled the statue of Dadasaheb Phalke. He was also honored with Phalke Ratna Award. Also present were Kajol and sister Tanishaa, who received awards on behalf of Ajay Devgn and their mother – yesteryear actress Tanuja, for Outstanding Performance (Singham) and Legendary Actress respectively. Ajay was out of state for shooting commitments and Tanuja was nursing a fractured arm.

Rohit Shetty bagged The Best Classical and Commercial Director Award and Ekta Kapoor got the Phalke Icon Producer Award – Film & Television. Raveena Tandon, who was present with husband Anil Thandani and father-in-law Kundan Thandani, was pleased when Kundan was honored for his contributions in Indian cinema.

Meanwhile, joining Aamir’s dubious ranks were several film and television personalities including Farhan Akhtar, Ram Kapoor, Saakshi Tanwar and Parineeti Chopra. Vinod Khanna and Vidya Balan however, were away to receive National Awards and Waheeda Rehman being a resident of Bengaluru could not make it due to illness.

    Amitabh’s cryptic tweets.

precisely the reason I don’t like Aamir at a personal level…
while he is very focussed on work and that helps him deliver quality products more or less, but he is very self-centered and self-obsessed person… and extremely disrespectful of others – whether contemporaries or legends of yester-years….hope he learns some humility !

How does it matter to anyone whether any actor (someone who you haven’t ever met and most probably never will) has humility or not? Is he complaining personally to you why you have humility or not ? His Job is to act and yours is to tanqeed that act. Fardeen khan may have a lot of humility, and Al pacino may not have it, does that make a difference to anything?

      John Galt,
don’t preach what I sud b doing… u do whatever u want bt spare me the gyan..
People connect to public figures not just by their profession but also their character as evident from interviews, public gatherings, body language etc etc…
Have u wondered why some public figures are more popular in spite of many others having similar records/performances/skills? (sportsman, film stars, etc etc)

Anyways, u can restrict your critique to an actor’s performances ..no issues with that.
But, as I said, no gyan please…

I agree with John. We are too far from actual events to pass a judgement. We tend to form a prism about all these distant personalities and try to pass half baked information through that prism. Now organizers are saying they invited, but Aamir’s Spokesperson is saying he never confirmed. Who are you going to believe?

        • narad_muni 12 years ago

Yes, I agree on that…. however perception is formed not due to one isolated event but a series of observation…
Anyways, its just my opinion.. n i m nt asking anyone to agree..

By the way, for public figures, as I said earlier, criticism is not always related to their piece of work only,.. we, the normal people (excluding the likes of Mr. Galt though) tend to form an image of a person’s character…which may be far from the actual character of the person.. but .that’s the truth.

As someone said, opinions r like assholes, everyone has one 😉

            Haha @ last line..

Question – If John Galt agreed with you, would you have been fine? My point is that John’s stated his opinion which was against yours and he gave an analogy. You could have easily disagreed and said whatever you said in response to me.

Now there are two or more versions of the story so I don’t know which one to believe.

      The one I posted says

“An organizer said they had written confirmation that Aamir would be present for the function, but he would stay for just half an hour, and they had planned to seat him next to Bollywood veterans Amitabh Bachchan and Vinod Khanna. After which, most controversially there was no show by Aamir.”

So they should release the written confirmation if they have it.

Personally I don’t care whether some celeb is humble or not. Muhammad Ali called himself The Greatest, Michael Jackson declared himself The King of Pop. So just because they showed lack of humility they don’t lose their greatness. If Lata or Sachin showed lack of humility they don’t lose their greatness by reason of their lack of humility.

      • narad_muni 12 years ago

that’s fine…it does not matter to u but it matters to me..that’s all.
And its just nor humility, its a combination of several things which leads me or someone else to form a perception about some public figure. And remember, its just a perception and not a fact.. it may or may not be true.

But just because it matters to me, I can’t be called wrong and u right…Its just individual choices

    hithere,
John G expressed his opinion, no issues.
But he told me what to do and what not because what he believes his right…. my objection is to that.

    Sputnik,
Curiuos to know why this article was posted here?
First, its not confirmed and secondly, it is not related to Aamir Khan’s movies or acting whatsoever. (I know why 😉 but still wud like to know from u )

This just goes to show people are interested in knowing the off-screen persona of a celebrity otherwise the paparazzi wud hv gone jobless long back..And its a fact many people do form perception about a celebrity based on various interactions with the public and gossips.
Take SRK for example…u dont have to search hard to find a SRK hater.. why do most people hate him? Its because ppl dont like his ‘chaep’, ‘vulgar’ jokes in award functions and various other events…they don’t like the way he makes fun of people..n blah blah… not only because he made a movie like RA.ONE…there were enuff haters before that as well 🙂
Now, u can’t call these people who hate SRK wrong..can u? Its a individual’s choice to determine on what parameters he/she likes/dislikes a person.. And nobody including John G can decide those parameters for them.
    Hope the point is clear.

I post a lot of stuff and since this had confirmation that “An organizer said” I posted in it in News otherwise I would have posted in the Gossip section. Anyways I also post Gossip and Boxoffice stuff which I personally am not that interested in but I know that many people are.

Now on the point about “off-screen persona” – while some people may not like some celeb because of something that they did I think it is usually the case that they already hate them and this is just an excuse.

The people who hate SRK because of his vulgar jokes at award functions or because he makes fun of people already hate him. These people do not have any problem with Boman Irani & Riteish who also crack similar jokes at IIFA. They don’t have a problem with Ranbir who dressed in drag but have a problem only with SRK in drag. These people should have hated Aamir and 3 Idiots also because it had fart and rape jokes but they don’t.

You are forgetting that there are lot of people who hate SRK because they think he is arrogant, pompous and has no humility 😉
