holiday Holiday – A Soldier Is Never Off Duty Has Weak Start
Friday 06 June 2014 12.00 IST
Box Office India Trade Network

Holiday – A Soldier Is Never Off Duty opened to a weak response all over. The start was not expected to be huge but with the IPL finishing and no big release for sometime it should have got a little benefit of the good period and opened better than what it has.

The film opened to collections of around 25-30% at multiplexes. The early single screen figures are not much better than the figures of multiplexes.

Holiday – A Soldier Is Never Off Duty always seemed dependent on word of mouth to score but it did not look the first day would open this slow, now it will need strong public reports to come out with even a respectable first day total and then hope to grow from there.

The other release of the week Filmistaan opened to dull houses of 5%

BO update: ‘Holiday’ opens well, ‘Filmistaan’ slow!
    By Taran Adarsh, June 6, 2014 – 14:19 IST

It’s the first Friday after the IPL 2014 and the season of biggies has commenced. The much-awaited Akshay – Sonakshi starrer HOLIDAY – A SOLDIER IS NEVER OFF DUTY has opened well, with the strong word of mouth indicating a wonderful total at the end of Day 1. Given the merits of the film, this A.R. Murugadoss-directed film should collect impressive numbers at single screens and plexes, both.

On the other hand, FILMISTAAN has embarked on a dull start, but, in any case, the film was never expected to open with a bang. Riding on tremendous critical acclaim and bestowed with awards, this massively entertaining film is expected to pick up with word of mouth over the weekend.

It is only in Bollywood where such polarized commentaries can be seen on factual things such as BO numbers and openings. Such a pathetic state of affairs.

Holiday – A Soldier Is Never Off Duty Is Better In Evening
    Saturday 06 June 2014 22.00 IST
    Box Office India Trade Network

Holiday – A Soldier Is Never Off Duty showed a decent turnaround in the evening and should now at least post a respectable total for the first day. The way the film opened it looked to be having a total that would not even touch 9 crore nett.

But the evening saw fair figures and although the first day total will not be good, it will now go into double digits and possibly even 11 crore nett which is a just about respectable for a 3300 screen release and big budget release.

A 15 crore nett plus total is actually optimum but the sort of start it had 11 crore nett will be not bad if it manages to reach there. The pick up does not mean that Saturday growth is automatic as the places which picked up best like Gujarat tend to go down Saturday so it will be interesting to see what happens on Saturday and can it manage to grow further.

Holiday – A Soldier Is Never Off Duty First Day Business
    Saturday 06 June 2014 10.30 IST
    Box Office India Trade Network

Holiday – A Soldier Is Never Off Duty grossed 11 crore nett on day one as per early estimates which is below the mark for its cost and release size but better than what it looked like when it opened yesterday morning. The film was best in Gujarat and Rajasthan.

The opening day collections of the film are less than Ready, Rowdy Rathore and Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani, the three films which was released in the same week over the last three years.

The collections also picked up in North with East Punjab and Delhi city both going over 1 crore nett. The key is now what happens on Saturday.

There is potential of big growth on Saturday as the film had low occupancies on Friday and can go much higher but on the other hand is that the areas with best business like Rajasthan and Gujarat tend to go down unless they are very low. So it remains to be seen how the film goes on Saturday.

    Holiday First Day – 5th For Akshay Kumar – 4th In 2014
    Saturday 07 June 2014 13.00 IST
    Box Office India Trade Network

Holiday – A Soldier Is Never Off Duty grossed 11.34 crore nett on day one as the evenings showed better collections but still the first day is not as high as it should be for its costs.

The opening day is the fourth best of 2014 after Jai Ho, Gunday and 2 States and is fifth best for an Akshay Kumar starrer after Rowdy Rathore, Housefull 2, Tees Maar Khan and Boss though Boss was a holiday release so in actual terms its better than Boss.

Holiday – A Soldier Is Never Off Duty will have to show good growth over the weekend to get to that 40 crore nett mark or above for the weekend which would be a good total. The film performed best in Rajasthan and also Gujarat which helped Mumbai circuit to a first day total around 4 crore nett.

Below is the first day territorial breakdown of Holiday – A Soldier Is Never Off Duty.

Holiday – A Soldier Is Never Off Duty Is Up On Saturday
    Sunday 08 June 2014 10.30 IST
    Box Office India Trade Network

Holiday – A Soldier Is Never Off Duty showed growth on Saturday as it grossed 12-12.25 crore nett taking its total to around 33.50 crore nett in two days. The film was up as compared to Friday at multiplexes all over the country.

Mumbai city, Delhi/Punjab, Kolkata nd Bangalore all showed solid growth. Mysore circuit showed huge gains and the film is likely to go on and be one of Akshay Kumar’s biggest grossers in that circuit.

The Saturday growth of around 8% is not huge but trend is pretty good especially looking at collections at some key centres which tend to sustain. The film could sustain and put up a decent lifetime total. Although the low opening day has hurt the film and due to that the weekend will not even touch 40 crore nett but lifetime figures may turn out to be decent.

Holiday May Emerge A HIT – Very Good Sunday
    Sunday 08 June 2014 23.00 IST
    Box Office India Trade Network

Holiday – A Soldier Is Never Off Duty is looking at a very good Sunday with huge growth all over and could even emerge a HIT with a chance of hitting the 100 crore nett if Monday comes up with the expected numbers and the film goes on a normal trend from there.

The business on Sunday may hit the 16 crore nett mark which would still mean the weekend number is below par at around 39 crore nett but the trend is fantastic which is the plus and should take it to good business in the final run.

The business on Sunday could well be amongst the top three days of the year as Jai Ho leads with a 25 crore nett total on Sunday but has 16.75 crore nett on Friday and 16 crore nett on Saturday and Holiday – A Soldier Is Never Off Duty could be amongst them.

Holiday – Weekend Below Par Trend Very Good
    Monday 09 June 2014 10.00 IST
    Box Office India Trade Network

Holiday – A Soldier Is Never Off Duty weekend business will be in the 38-39 crore nett as it will have a Sunday in between the 15-16 crore nett range. Sunday has seen huge growth for the film with it showing at at least 25% growth and some circuits having even higher growth.

The weekend is still below par but the week will be good as the trend has been strong over the weekend with good growth in key areas. The opening has cost the film a good weekend as really the first day business should have been more closer to the business on Sunday.

A 35 crore plus weekend is normally a fair result but Holiday – A Soldier Is Never Off Duty is a costly film for its distributors so it becomes like that Jai Ho scenario which got 57 crore nett weekend but still was not quite enough for its costs. Although the costs of Holiday – A Soldier Is Never Off Duty are not as high as Jai Ho but still they warrant a bigger weekend than 38 or 39 crore nett.

The final results of the film will be much better than the initial and it could even reach 100 crore nett and should at least emerge a decent success or possibly even a hit depending on how it sustains over the next 10-12 days or so.

Holiday – A Soldier Is Never Off Duty Has A Good Monday
    Tuesday 10 June 2014 10.00 IST
    Box Office India Trade Network

Holiday – A Soldier Is Never Off Duty had a good Monday grossing 7.50-7.75 crore nett and taking its four day business to 46.50 crore nett. The week should finish around 64-66 crore nett depending on the falls on the rest of the weekdays. It is the second highest Monday of the year after Jai Ho which grossed around 9 crore nett,

This will make it the second highest first week for Akshay Kumar after Rowdy Rathore which grossed 75 crore nett approx and coincidently was released in exactly the same as Holiday – A Soldier Is Never Off Duty two years back.

If the film manages to hold through the week then the second week will be all important and a big total will mean the film emerging a hit. The 100 crore mark is also dependent on week two as there will be a huge flow of releases from week three onwards which will hit the business of the film hard.

Holiday Holds Very Strongly On Tuesday
    Wednesday 11 June 2014 11.30 IST
    Box Office India Trade Network

Holiday – A Soldier Is Never Off Duty held up very strongly on Tuesday which is was the key day and now the film is set for a good run. There was a limited drop on Tuesday with collections in the 7-7.25 crore nett region. It is the highest Tuesday of the year along with Jai Ho which was in the same range

The film has so far grossed around 53.75 crore nett and should hit 65 crore nett for the week. The film is holding up very well all over and business in some circuits is likely to be the best ever for an Akshay Kumar starrer.

Holiday – A Soldier Is Never Off Duty has found appreciation all over with the only problem for the film being that heavy price tag which is playing spoilsport as the Worldwide distributors paid quite a premium for the film a bit like Jai Ho.

Holiday In A Similar Boat To Jai Ho
    Thursday 12 June 2014 11.00 IST
    Box Office India Trade Network

Holiday – A Soldier Is Never Off Duty is in a similar boat to Jai Ho in that it has done well if we take into account the production budget but the Worldwide rights were purchased for a premium. Basically Jai Ho rights were at a blockbuster price and while with Holiday – A Soldier Is Never Off Duty are not so high but its still a superhit price.

Jai Ho had a production budget of 40 crore approx without Salman Khan remuneration and P&A while Holiday – A Soldier Is Never Off Duty is around 30 crore approx without Akshay Kumar remuneration and P&A.

The films may be very big for the industry due to the heavy costs but the audience does not see them like a Dhoom 3 or Chennai Express as they do not look as grand on screen. This is why the box office results do not meet the prices paid as the public does not see them as grand big budget films and therefore the initials are not quite there. The initial is not a problem for low or medium costing films but if big films misses out then its a problem as you can hold steady in week two but the share is down. If there is a 60% drop in nett collections, the share is down 70% and its the share that is needed for recovery.

Holiday – A Soldier Is Never Off Duty will get around 38-40 crore nett (after taxes) maximum from its non theatrical rights which leaves another 65-70 crore to be covered from Worldwide theatrical. Overseas is not doing well and looking at a 7-8 crore share so the rest has be covered from Indian theatrical. It may well get there but a well accepted film doing good business all over getting just to coverage and that too depending on business after week three means a misjudgement in the value of the film.

boi playing its usual communal tactics. holiday which has actually done really well and has lower costs than jai ho is being put in the same bracket. this is to build a narrative that a successful non-kahn film has done the same as an underperforming khan film. and look how conveniently they have skipped k3 while talking about the big/grand films.

Post IPL is arguably the best release period of the year in terms of how films can open and trend. YJHD showed it last year. Pent up demand, school summer vacations, college break, heat wave (where many people are just ready to enter the cinemas just for the air-conditioning)… Rowdy Rathode the previous year and Ready the one before that- all blockbusters despite not so glorious reviews. Holiday has merits despite the completely unnecessary romantic track which almost kills the film- has received good reveiws- is a good looking film with good action scenes and decent thrills- and yet it may not go on to touch 100 crores. Shows how much Akshay has lost ground.

Comparisons with Jai Ho are justified or not- depends on the costs at which Reliance has acquired Holiday. Jai Ho Producers also made a lot of profit- but the distributor were in the red- same may be the case with Holiday. Also, Jai Ho released in one of the most unfavorable release periods of the year, and a record breaking blockbuster had come in the last month- else it might have made around 130-140. Still, Holiday’s performance shows that even 110 Cr is not that easy to get unless it is a franchise film with established/accepted characters and hit music.

Holiday – A Soldier Is Never Off Duty Has Good First Week
    Friday 13 June 2014 11.30 IST
    Box Office India Trade Network

Holiday – A Soldier Is Never Off Duty did well in its first as it grossed around 65.75 crore nett. The weekend was not quite up to the mark due to the opening being lacklustre but the film trended very well in the weekdays to come out with a good first week.

The second week should hold well and should be the highest second week of the year beating the figures of 2 States and Jai Ho which were 25 crore nett approx and 21.50 crore nett approx respectively.

The third week should see the film cross 100 crore nett which is not really a big deal today for big star films like Holiday – A Soldier Is Never Off Duty but as it did not open too well then the 100 crore mark becomes a bigger achievement than it would otherwise. In one or two circuits the film may well go on and be the highest Akshay Kumar grossing film ever. Holiday – A Soldier Is Never Off Duty has done good or at least decent business in all circuits across India in its first week.

Holiday Set To Be Top Grosser Of 2014
    Saturday 14 June 2014 12.30 IST
    Box Office India Trade Network

Holiday – A Soldier Is Never Off Duty is set to be the top grosser of the year till date as it maintained steady collections on its eighth day. The day eight collections were around the 4 crore nett mark.

The eighth day collections are the best of the year and that second weekend and second week will also follow that trend. The film will easily go over 15 crore nett (possibly even to 17-18 crore) for the weekend as Saturday and Sunday will show big growth.

Jai Ho is the biggest grosser of the year till date with 108 crore nett and Holiday – a Soldier Is Never Off Duty should beat that and get to the 110 crore nett mark. The film will show a drop from week three onwards due to the flow of big releases but as the film is established now it will still get the screenings to do decent business from week three onwards and take it towards that 110 crore nett total.

Holiday May Hit Century In Two Weeks – Fugly Flat

Holiday – A Soldier Is Never Off Duty continues to dominate the box office as it grossed around 6.25-6.50 crore on Saturday to take its second weekend total to 10.50 crore nett. If the film follows the trend of last week it may hit 20 crore nett in its second weekend which will give it a shot at 100 crore nett it two weeks.

Fugly is poor as it could not grow on Sunday with collections coming in the 2.25 crore nett range taking its business to 4.50 crore nett in twodays.

Saturday growth is a must for these types and that too big growth and as Fugly showed no growth its likely the film will not go anywhere as far as its box office is concerned.

Holiday – A Soldier Is Never Off Duty has grossed 87 crore nett in ten days as the second weekend has added around 18.50 crore nett. The second week could hit 30 crore nett and take the film near the 100 crore nett mark.

The film is sure to be the highest grossing film of the year as though there is a heavy flow of releases from Friday onwards, it should manage to do around 10-15 crore nett to go a bit over the 110 crore nett mark.

If the film does manage to go 30 crore nett then it will join an elite list of 11 films which have managed this feat. Rowdy Rathore and Housefull 2 are two other Akshay Kumar starrers in the list.

    Humshakals Has Mixed Opening
    Friday 20 June 2014 12.30 IST
    Box Office India Trade Network

Humshakals had a mixed opening as it opened to fair collections at places but low collections at other places. The multiplex opening on average was in the 25-30% range and it was similar at single screens. The opening means that occupancies must be stronger in the evening on to get a decent first day total.

The best opening came in the multiplexes of Delhi NCR area and Gujarat (40%) while West Bengal (15%) saw the weakest start. The film will depend heavily on Mumbai circuit to drive it which is the case with most films in this zone as they do tend to do better in Gujarat.

The key for every comedy film is that 30-405 growth on Sunday as that is when the family audience comes out and it is they who decide the fate of comedy films unless the comedy is a sex comedy like Grand Masti or youth driven like Fukrey. Humshakals has released on nearly 3000 screens and is the third widest release of the year after Jai Ho and Holiday – A Soldier on Duty.

The other two releases of the week The Untold Story – Aahinsa and Guardians Who Loved Us were washouts. Both films released in single screens and interiors but with English names which is weird.

BO update: Mixed start for ‘Humshakals’
    By Taran Adarsh,
    June 20, 2014 – 16:15 IST

Sajid Khan’s HUMSHAKALS has opened to a mixed response at the ticket window. While the start and noon shows were better in North India and Gujarat, the opening response in several circuits ranged from average to low. The business should grow during the evening shows, like it happens with many big-ticket films.

On the other hand, HOLIDAY – A SOLDIER IS NEVER OFF DUTY has crossed Rs 100 cr nett mark in India as you read this. HIT.

Humshakals Heading for Solid First Day
    Friday 20 June 2014 22.30 IST
    Box Office India Trade Network

Humshakals is heading for a solid first day total and is sure to cross 10 crore nett and may even possibly go to 11 crore nett which would be a decent result for the film.

As expected the film has fared best in Mumbai circuit with Gujarat leading the way and most other circuits have also fared pretty well on day one. The multiplex collections are very similar to what Holiday – A Soldier Is Never Off Duty had on its first day.

The single screens are lower than Holiday – A Soldier Is Never Off Duty as that film had the star power of Akshay Kumar at mass centres but the costs are also lower with Humshakals so if multiplexes do well on Saturday and the families come out on Sunday it will eventually do well at the box office.

Humshakals Does Well On First Day
    Saturday 21 June 2014 13.00 IST
    Box Office India Trade Network

Humshakals did well on its first day as it collected around 11.25 crore nett. The film started with average collections at most places but multiplexes gained well throughout the day.

The collections are slightly lower than Holiday – A Soldier Is Never Off Duty but has lower costs and prices. The film fared best in Mumbai, Delhi NCR, East Punjab and Rajasthan with collections in single screen circuits like Bihar and CI on the lower side.

CP Berar another single screen circuit fared better as film fared better in single screens of Maharashtra. The key now is for the film to sustain on Saturday and if that happens then it will be a strong Sunday and a solid weekend total. The first day is the fifth best of 2014 after Jai Ho, Gunday, 2 States and Holiday – A Soldier Is Never Off Duty.

    Humshakals is Steady On Saturday
    Sunday 21 June 2014 13.30 IST
    Box Office India Trade Network

Humshakals held well on Saturday with collections the same range as Friday. The film collected around 11-11.25 crore nett on Saturday giving it a two day total of 22 crore nett plus.

The 22 crore figure is an okay figure but the trend the trend has been good over the first two days with the film having a similar Saturday to Friday when normally there is a 5-10% drop for the films with a wide release as generally there is a drop outside the 5-6 big metros.

The trend on Saturday ensures growth on Sunday but it will be about how big the growth is. A few weeks back Holiday – A Soldier Is Never Off duty showed 35% growth on Sunday coming off a slightly better Friday and Saturday trend so here there is potential for a 20-30% uptrend with 30% being very good.

Holiday – A Soldier Is Never Off is closing in on the number one grosser of the year Jai Ho as it takes its seventeen day total to nearly 105 crore nett with a 5.75-6 crore nett third weekend.

The film could beat Jai Ho at the end of the third week but if it does not it is sure to beat in in the fourth weekend. The film has seen a 70% drop in the third weekend compared to 53% in the second weekend due to the release of Humshakals.

It will be a similar drop in the third week as another major film Ek Villian releases which means a 112 crore nett lifetime finish. The final business will be in the same range as Akshay Kumar’s Housefull 2.

Humshakals Has Decent Weekend With Good Trend
    Monday 23 June 2014 11.30 IST
    Box Office India Trade Network

Humshakals had big growth on Sunday as it collected around 14 crore nett giving it a total of 36 crore nett plus. The collections for the weekend are decent and the trend is good with Sunday showing solid growth all over. The collections were up are 25% on Sunday.

The initial could have been a bit better but to have a 35 crore nett plus figure from the initial it got is very good. The figures are slightly lower than Holiday – A Soldier Off Duty due to single screens where Akshay Kumar has that initial draw. In Mysore the film has collected more than Holiday – A Soldier Off Duty.

There will not be much of a problem covering costs as comedies get a good satellite rate and the film is shot in UK so there is the rebate of shooting there which will amount to a sizeable amount as the film has production budget of 50 crore plus and it will be Monday and Tuesday that will decide where the final theatrical business will end up.

Holiday Is Biggest Grosser Of 2014
    Friday 27 June 2014 12.00
    Box Office India Trade Network

Holiday – A Soldier Is Never Off Duty grossed 10 crore nett approx in its third week making it the highest grossing film of the year till date. The film has now grossed 109 crore nett going past the 108 crore nett of Jai Ho.

The film may the end the first half of the year as the highest grossing film if Ek Villian remains lower and going to that level is a huge ask for Ek Villian.

The third week did see a drop in business of 65% as compared to the 55% drop in week two but that was mainly due the release of Humshakals. The film is likely to do an all India distributor share of around 57 crore with Mumbai topping at 20 crore plus.

    Humshakals First Week Business

    Friday 27 June 2014 11.30
    Box Office India Trade Network

Humshakals grossed around 51.25 crore nett in its first week. The film had a decent weekend but had a drop of 55% on Monday from and the normal weekday drops..

The weekend had seen better business in circuits like Mumbai, Delhi/UP and East Punjab but the film held better in the weekdays in places like CP Berar, CI, Rajasthan and Gujarat. The first week collections are the fifth best of the year after Jai Ho, Holiday – A Soldier Is Never Duty, Gunday and 2 States .

Overall its a fair first week but the film is dependent on what sort of business it can get over the next 7-10 days or so.

Holiday was definitely a Deserving 200cr film but it failed to score that big just cuz of average Films collections of Akki in 2013 and average music and Below the mark Promotion , It has almost crossed 112-113crs after this wknd and 115 by this wk end. It has come a long way almost 3times of the opening wknd which is Rare in today’s Scenario , If it would have got A week more and 400-600more screens in it’s 2nd-3rd nd 4th wk ,it could have gone even higher.

It’s 3rd Monday was almost 2nd Thursday,3rd Tuesday was more than 3rd Fri nd 3rd Monday which shows it’s Consistency,Love and acceptance of the Public

It is Certainly Akki’s Best Performance till date and only he could have pulled off such a Role so effortlessly,He got back some fame/trust after Holiday ,will get max after it’s Entertainment and Gabbar Will be HUGE

lot of other films released last year and also this year featured lesser stars with lesser opening and got to holiday total. its not that big of a deal to accuse it of being “loved” by public! grossing 3 times the opening weekend is not rare at all. almost all big grossers of last few years have made 3 times weekend number be it ett, d3, yjhd or k3, let alone the small successful ones.
