Best Comedy Movies of Hindi Cinema Of All Time

I have tried to list the Hindi Cinema’s Best Comedy Movies in order but no matter what you try, you will miss some movies that deserve to be named or ranked highly over others.

I have not rated “Chupke Chupke” and “Jaane Bhi Do Yaaron” in top 10 to which some may object as I personally thought others deserve better ranking than them. Any how below is the list and I think it may act as a reference point as well for comedy film fans.

s 100 Most Lovable Comical Production

PS: I have deliberately missed out few Amol Palekar’s, Shammi Kapoors, Mahmood’s and Raj Kapoor movies along with some old classical’s that i can’t remember or recall it.

I did not understand at first why you have movies both horizontally and vertically. I think I now get it. So movies in column 1-10 are movies you rank 1-10 , in column 11-20 are movies you rank 11-20 and so on?

    • FS 11 years ago

Yup… Rank is given vertically but to have a quick reference i had to arrange it in a square box. Maybe the row that refers 10-20 or 20-30 should be put in the bottom for easy understanding? Made some changes in the list as well.

      • sputnik 11 years ago

hmm not sure it will make a difference. May be you can explain with a line in bold how the ranking is.

Waise the row should be 11-20, 21-30 and so on instead of 10-20 and so on 😀

Any particular reason why “Comical Productions” instead of just “Comedies”?

        • FS 11 years ago

Common Sputnik, there are 100 films and I can’t keep on explaining for each film. If some one point out any particular thing like you did (instead of comedies or how i rank them), i can answer it..

I ranked first 25-50 films based on symptoms such as Stomach aches, sore throat and dry mouth that appeared immediately while watching these movies. After 30 – 40 films i ranked them based on amount of laughs or entertainment i had.

About Comical Productions – Ek Title dena tha, isliye Likh diya jo dimaag mein aaya…

          • sputnik 11 years ago

I did not want you to explain it for each film with a line.

I meant you can just add a line in bold in your post explaining how to read the square box (1st column is movies 1-10 2nd column is movies 11-20) coz it might be confusing to some initially.

Will comment in detail later on movies mentioned in your list and which I have seen.

Love AAA, Hera Pheri, Chalti Ka Naam Gaadi, Chasme Buddoor, Deewana Masthana, Angoor, All the Best, Chupke Chupke, Baawarchi, The Angrez, Khosla Ka Ghosla, Lage Raho Munna Bhai, Dhamaal (even thought lot of it is copied)

Like Pushpak too but don’t like parts of the movie involving the kidnapped guy now. Liked Dulhe Raja when I saw in 90s but have not seen it again. Same with Baadshah. Used to love JBDY in the 90s but when I watched it a few years back did not find it that funny. Loved Chameli Ki Shaadi when I saw it back in the 90s on TV but have not seen again.

Love the old Golmaal and like the new Golmaal 1 too. Like Munnabhai MBBS, HHRPK, No Entry, Hungama, Welcome, Hulchul, Dhol, WTS, Style. Liked Bhool Bhulaiyya but is not entirely comedy. Loved 3 Idiots when it released but don’t like it now. Liked Judaai but it was not entirely comedy.

Did not like the Telugu/Tamil version of Chachi 420 when I saw it back then but saw Chachi 420 recently and liked it.

Satta Pe Satta is not entirely comedy and the first half is totally copied from Seven Brides for Seven Brothers. Used to like Choti Si Baat but after watching the original recently and finding out that most of it is copied lost respect for it. Hated Partner when I first saw it because I had seen Hitch before and liked it. But now I find it ok when I see parts of it on TV.

Had liked Ishq Vishq back then but have not seen it again. Liked Haseena Maan Jayegi back then but have not seen it again. Liked Hero No 1 back then but it is a unofficial remake of Baawarchi and love Bawarchi more. Liked PKTDK back then but have not seen it again.

Mujhse Shaadi Karoge is ok. Hyderabadi Nawabs was ok not as good as The Angrez. Peepli Live was ok – wasn’t really a comedy. Delhi Belly was ok – last half hour was good. Namak Halaal is ok. Parts of it are very funny.

Did not like Aankhen (93) when I saw it back then. Did not like Amitabh’s Aankhein either. Did not like Padosan much. Did not like Judwaa much. Had seen the Telugu Hello Brother starring Nagarjuna earlier and liked that one more and even preferred Nagarjuna more. Did not like Ready. The original Telugu movie Anukokunda Oka Roju was very good and Sunday was bad. The casting was ok in the remake and did not like Ajay and Irfan. Did not like Housefull 1 & 2.

Hated DDC, Sankat City, Bheja Fry, Hey Baby, Well Done Abba, PGRO. Had seen original of Biwi No 1 starring Kamal Haasan and hated it. Walked out of the theater during climax. So never bothered with the remake.

Long list. Like all the movies till 15th. Many of the movies are not comedies imo.

Style at 99 and no mention of Run and bol bachchan (starring AB Jr)? Dushmani h kya 😉 its one of the most underrated movie. The ‘kawa biryani man’ (as he call him in our frnd circle) is more than brilliant. Hez the same guy who was plane instructor(dnt knw what they are called as) in Dhamaal.
Some recent comedies u forgot to mentioned are Vicky Donor, Dabangg 1 and 2, kya super cool hai hum….

  4. Reddemon 11 years ago

Good to see movies like chameli ki shaadi, Padoosan, angoor and half ticket mentioned. Some other Gems are Chalti Ka Naam Gaadi, lok parlok Sadhu aur shaitan, Bawarchi, Guddi, Aaj Ki Taaza Khabar, Chhoti Si Baat.
BTW u can mention all the movies of Hrishikesh Da in the list 😉

  5. FS 11 years ago

Ok – I changed few movies and request others not to go by my ranking. If anyone has any suggestion i would like to include such changes to the deserved ones.

reddemon – I have not watched run and hence not included in it.. many are praising its parallel story of vijay raaz and will try to check out some time…

Where is Chameli ki Shaadi? (i cant see the chart and rank now but remember AAA was on top)

Whole list is ridiculous btw…including AAA which is highly overrated comedy….it was so weak in “tongue in cheek” content ..and was more of haha-huhu kind. (No doubt it was damn good but definitely not the best )

    • Reddemon 11 years ago

“AAA which is highly overrated comedy
.it was so weak in “tongue in cheek” content ..and was moreof haha-huhu kind. (No doubt it was damn good but definitely not the best )”

Finally! Someone who has similar views on AAA.

  7. Anjanpur685Miles 11 years ago

@Reddemon, Out of newer films..I would rate Awara Pagal Deewana as one of the best comedies ever made – it has excellent dialogues and performances…and it has all – tongue in cheek, straight faced humor, haha-huhu, slapstick etc. And it has perfect balance of it all.

    • Reddemon 11 years ago

Agree. APD is one of the most underrated Action-comedy.

I liked Hera pheri more than APD

  8. Anjanpur685Miles 11 years ago

Hera Pheri is classic no doubt. But APD has better dialogues….and its more pointless movie than Hera Pheri 🙂

I cant watch Hera Pheri now – have seen it repeatedly many times and it gets boring now…But Manilaal ; Chota Chatri , Yeda Anna, Guru gulab khatri never bore me somehow. 😀

Surfers pick ‘Hera Pheri’, ‘Andaz Apna Apna’ as top Hindi comedy films of all time in Indian Express online poll

We had conducted a poll for our online voters of Indian Express to decide the top 10 comedy films in Bollywood from over the years. Our list had fifteen choices and the votes are finally in.

At the time of writing this copy, topping the poll with about 684 votes is Priyadarshan’s ‘Hera Pheri’ which had the deadly combo of Akshay Kumar and Paresh Rawal in the lead. During its release in the country, the film grossed at a whopping Rs. 17,25,00,000.

Coming in close second is the cult classic Salman and Aamir Khan’s ‘Andaz Apna Apna’. The film received 669 votes and talks of a sequel are always doing the rounds. During its release in 1994, the film didn’t fare well at the box office. But over the years its funny one-liners, entertaining drama and melodious songs have turned it into an all-time favourite comedy.

    ?w=299&h=600″>

Shah Rukh Khan – Deepika Padukone’s ‘Chennai Express’ came third with 242 votes. The Rohit Shetty flick broke several records in India and abroad on its release and became the fastest film to collected Rs 100 crore at the box office.

Kundan Shah’s multi-starrer ‘Jaane Bhi Do Yaaro’ with Nasseruddin Shah, Ravi Baswani, Om Puri, Pankaj Kapur, Satish Shah Bhakti Barve and Satish Kaushik came in fourth with 144 votes. Jaane Bhi Do Yaaron, a black comedy, is also remembered for its famous Mahabharata scene.

Considered to be one of the finest comedy films of all times ‘Hrishikesh Mukherjee’s ‘Gol Maal’ is fifth with 132 votes. The movie had some of the finest performances by Utpal Dutt and Amol Palekar.

In sixth place with 123 votes, is ‘Padosan’ which was the hilarious love story between two neighbours, played by Sunil Dutt and Saira Banu. Legendary singer Kishore Kumar as Sunil Dutt’s singing teacher and friend was the icing on the cake.

Rajkumar Hirani’s coming-of-age-comedy-drama, ‘3 Idiots’ starring Aamir Khan, Sharman Joshi and R Madhavan managed to make it to No 7 with mere 117 votes. The film that told the tale of three engineering students broke all opening box office records in India and was the highest-grossing film in its opening weekend.

In eighth place is Hrishikesh Mukherjee’s ‘Chupke Chupke’ starring Dharmendra, Sharmila Tagore, Amitabh Bachchan, Jaya Bachchan and Om Prakash with 86 votes.

Anees Bazmee’s ‘Welcome’ starring Akshay Kumar, Nata Patekar, Anil Kapoor, Katrina Kaif, Mallika Sherawat and Paresh Rawal is one of the most loved comedy films and came in 9th with 61 votes.

And finally at No 10 with 57 votes is ‘Angoor’ which revolved around the hilarious tale of two pairs of identical twins played by Sanjeev Kumar, who are separated at birth and reunited later in life.

surprised that hera pheri could beat andaz apna apna. aamir/salman fans both would have voted unanimously for it. i cant say if its the greatest comedy of all time but i have always said hera pheri is most definitely a better film than AAA. it has a proper storyline , character development and sensible ending. AAA is spoofy all the way but as a film not much story or characters to look too much into. and some scenes have lot of overacting.
