Girl gang-raped in moving bus in Delhi

NEW DELHI: A medical student in her twenties, who was traveling with her male friend in a whiteline bus from Munirka to Uttam Nagar area in west Delhi, was allegedly gang-raped by a group of men inside the moving bus and thrown off the vehicle near Mahipalpur in south Delhi on late Sunday night.

The woman’s friend is an engineering pass-out and works for a private firm.

The girl and the boy were reportedly returning after watching a movie at a theatre in Select City Walk mall in Saket area of south Delhi.

They took an auto till Munirka and then boarded the whiteline bus from the bus stop to go to Uttam Nagar area near Palam where they reside.

The girl was gang-raped by people including the staff of the bus even as the driver drove around the city and her friend was brutally assaulted.

The duo were then stripped and dumped from the moving bus near Mahipalpur flyover.

The girl and the boy raised an alarm and the cops arrived. They were taken to the AIIMS Trauma Center for medical help.

The girl was shifted to Safdarjung Hospital later. Her condition is stated to be critical. She has abrasions and head injuries apart from the sexual assault injuries.

The police have registered a case of gang rape under section 376 G at Vasant Vihar police station and are investigating the matter.

Gang-rape in Delhi bus: Police arrest prime accused Ram Singh, who is the bus driver

The police have arrested the prime accused, the bus driver, in the shocking case of a medical student being gang-raped and assaulted in a bus in Delhi on Sunday. According to the police, along with the driver of the bus – Ram Singh – five more men were involved in the crime.

When the young 23-year-old medical student and her male friend finished watching a movie in Saket in South Delhi, it wasn’t very late.

At about 10 pm, they boarded a bus from Munirka in south Delhi. The six men, who were already on the chartered bus, run by a private operator, saw the young girl and began harassing and taunting her for being out with a man late in the night.

What happened next is not clear yet before an unimaginable 90 minutes. The woman would be gang-raped and then beaten repeatedly with an iron rod. Her companion, who tried to intervene and protect her, was also attacked.

A little after 11 pm, the Police Control Room received a phone call from a passer-by, informing them about the semi-naked couple, lying unconscious on a flyover. The police then collected the young couple and rushed them to a hospital.

Nearly 24 hours later, the woman is struggling for her life. After going through multiple operations, she is currently on a ventilator.

The police sources say the iron rod used on her caused irreparable damage to her abdomen.

Her friend was treated for head injuries and is reportedly in critical condition.

The police say based on security cameras on NH 8, they have arrested the driver of the bus. The other five are reportedly on the run.

The bus used has been tracked down to the suburb of Noida, and was reportedly used by private schools. Though last night, police believe that Ram Singh and others were moonlighting, hoping to make an extra buck. They were all drinking before the incident, according to the police.

Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit said that the permit of the bus has been cancelled by the transport department and necessary action would be taken to ensure such incidents don’t happen in the future.

“I have been told by transport department that their licence has been cancelled. We will take all the necessary measures to ensure that such incidents don’t happen,” she said.

This is even more sick. Policeman Arrested for Raping a Rape Victim

A Senior Sub-inspector (SSI) was arrested from a hotel on Thursday night in Uttar Pradesh for raping a rape victim.

Reports say, the girl was sexually abused when she went to the policeman seeking action for a rape complaint lodged earlier by her in the Akbarpur police station.

SSI Man Singh, on the pretext of taking her to meet the Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of Faziabad range, took her to a hotel in Motinagar near Faziabad where he raped her.

The girl reportedly managed to slip into the bathroom and send a text to her relatives, who immediately informed the matter to the DIG, following which a team of police raided the hotel and rescued the girl. Medical examination confirmed the rape, reported IANS.

The girl hails from Akbarpur city, about 180 km from Ambedkarnagar, say reports.

After being rescued, she told the police that her father deserted her soon after her mother’s death. She also said that she was gangraped by a village local and five of his friends.

Reports say that she had lodged a complaint against them on September 15 in Akbarpur police station.

The girl alleged that the culprits were not arrested, despite the complaint. They threatened her instead, due to which she went to Man Singh seeking help.

Govind Agarawal, Ambedkarnagar Superintendent of Police, said that a probe has been initiated into the matter and Man Singh was suspended from his duties.

When I was in India a month back they were making everyone remove tinted glasses. The reason was that the Supreme Court passed a judgement that tinting should be removed coz some people were raping women in cars with tinted glasses. I thought it was stupid. I told my friend what if someone rapes a woman in a bus/van? And unfortunately this is what has happened in this case.

      • sputnik 11 years ago

Delhi gangrape: No tinted glasses on buses, says Shinde – NewsX

      • hithere 11 years ago

That is problem with Indian administrator. The measures are always like band-aid. You need tinted glass in Delhi’s summer. The correct solution would be to have better background check of people who are serving public. And the onus should be on owner and they should be audited periodically. Apart from that they need to do better law and order managmenet. They have policmen to do all paper check at multiple places on road but not enough to stop these kind of crimes. Many of the criminals after the deed go to neighbouring states. That passage needs to be restricted. Of course these cases should be tried in fast pace courts and quantum of punishment should be increased.

ps – well the root problem is social and economical inequalities in society. Most of the time mentality is “Ladki ne is taraf dekha nahi ki woh line maar rahi hai”.

Bollywood has some social responsibility too. Just stop objectifying women & stop encouraging songs like “Razia gundon mein phas gayi”, “Halkat Jawani”, “Ooh lala”, “Munni badnam”, “Sheila ki jawani”!! Then we have great films like 3 Idiots & Dil from geniuses like Aamir Khan, where they make jokes on rape or do a “mock rape” to teach a lesson to a girl! Even SRK has done films which nearly glorified the obsessive stalker who harassed the heroine (Darr, Anjaam).

They brush it off aside claiming they are just entertainers & films are just fiction. But it’d be foolish to think films/songs don’t affect mentality. Only giving speeches or statements to media now won’t make any difference.

    • Bored 11 years ago

It is true that Bollywood has a fetish for rape and does not tend to take it seriously – previously it used to be treated as a permissible sex scene , now they kinda treat is as an essential part of slapstick jokes – and yes our intellectually savvy star Aamir also takes part in that.

Tihar inmates thrash Delhi bus gangrape accused, force him to consume human excreta

Even Tihar Jail inmates couldn’t stand the horror of the Delhi bus gangrape case . This came to light when the inmates beat up Mukesh, the main accused in the Delhi bus gangrape case, in the jail. Sources in the jail said Mukesh was also forced to consume human excreta and urine.

After the attack , jail authorities have decided to lodge him separate from other inmates.

The victim’s male friend, who was beaten up by the accused bus crew, identified Mukesh in the test identification parade (TIP). The identification would help police in establishing that the other accused were also with him.

The 23-year-old paramedic student was raped and badly beaten up in a moving bus while she was returning home in Mahavir Enclave area on Sunday night. Her friend had tried to rescue her but he too was badly thrashed by the accused. The duo was then stripped and dumped in Vasant Vihar area. They were consequently hospitalised by the police and the girl’s condition has still been critical.

Police arrested four people in connection with the rape. Main accused Ram Singh, who was the driver of the bus, and his accomplices Vinay and Pawan have been on police remand while his brother Mukesh was sent to two-week judicial custody on Wednesday.

During their court appearance on Wednesday, only Mukesh had agreed to the TIP. Vinay and Pawan had confessed to being part of the gang and said there was no need for their participation in the TIP. In fact, Vinay had said that he was ashamed of his crime even as he claimed that he did not rape the girl. Admitting to beating her friend, he had said he should be hanged for his act.

Saw that interview just a few days back. Baba had given the link to that interview and yes its very disturbing.

He was convicted though and given life imprisonment.

“Another high-profile accused, Babu Bajrangi, the notorious leader of Bajrang Dal’s moral police who was often caught on the wrong side of the law, will spend the rest of his life in jail.”

BJP MLA and former minister in the Narendra Modi government Maya Kodnani was also given 28 years imprisonment. She was a MLA during the riots from this constituency and was rewarded later with a ministry.

I don’t get this development thing. I don’t know you even if you seen the documentary The Final Solution but it has interviews of people claiming that they killed people too and others claiming that the police was siding with one community. So If someone takes sides in a fight between two communities and does not administer his duty how is this good governance? In fact this person should be punished but instead is hailed as a great leader and what not. And people point out that Congress leaders were involved in other riots like the 1984 riots. So they should be punished too. One can’t use the logic that nothing happened to them so nothing should happen here too. Its like saying the rapists in the latest Delhi gangrape should be set free because other rapists were set free in the past.

‘It rejected the defence’s argument that communal violence in Naroda Patiya was a reaction to Godhra train burning incident.

“This was a pre-planned conspiracy and it cannot be mitigated just by saying that it was a reaction of Godhra train burning incident,” it said.

Describing Kodnani as the “kingpin” of the riots, the court said she led the mob and incited it for violence.

Kodnani, who was an MLA at the time of the riots, was made minister of state for women and child development in 2007 but had to resign after she was arrested in March 2009.

Kodnani, a three-time MLA from Naroda who was considered to be close to Chief Minister Modi, is the first woman to be convicted in a post-Godhra riots case.’

Rape survivor airlift was govt., not medical, decision

Experts consulted by the government before transferring the critically-ill Delhi gang rape survivor to Singapore have told The Hindu they were only asked if the patient was fit to be airlifted — not if the move was medically advisable.

“The question we were asked was whether it would be safe to move her,” said one member of the expert team, drawn from doctors at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences, Govind Ballabh Pant Hospital and Safdarjung Hospital. “The question was not whether there were any deficiencies in treatment that would be met by moving her,” he said, adding, “She was being given the best possible care.”

Independent experts have questioned the wisdom of the government’s decision to move the 23-year-old woman from Safdarjung hospital.

“I just can’t understand why a critically ill patient with infection in blood and body, high grade fever and on the ventilator is being transferred,” said Dr. Samiran Nundy, chairman of the organ transplant and gastro-surgery department of Sir Ganga Ram Hospital. “It will take weeks in this case to even look into the possibility of an intestinal transplant so why hurry and take the patient out from a facility which works so well. It seems more of a political move.”

The final decision to move the woman to Singapore came after she suffered a cardiac arrythmia — a sudden drop in her heart rate — for five minutes on Tuesday night, leading doctors at Safdarjung Hospital to call in outside experts. The last bulletin issued by the hospital on Wednesday night said she remained unable to breathe without the assistance of a ventilator, continued to battle infection, and suffered from low liver function.

Highly-placed government sources said the decision to move the patient had been discussed by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Tuesday, amidst growing concerns about her medical condition.

The Singapore High Commission in New Delhi then liaised with Indian authorities to rapidly arrange documentation and admission at the Mt. Elizabeth Hospital. The Delhi High Court had earlier said that the victim, “if it is possible, should be shifted to a super-speciality hospital.”

Police sources say the woman suffered massive internal injuries to her intestinal tract, because the assailants sexually assaulted her with a rusted, L-shaped iron rod that was used to operate a jack used to change flat tyres on buses and trucks.

However, doctors speaking to The Hindu said they were unsure that moving the patient to Singapore would help in the management of her condition. “There is no question of a transplant at this stage,” said Dr. Kaushal Kant Mishra, a senior orthopaedic surgeon at Primus Hospital. “The infection has to be controlled first, and the patient stabilised. I do not understand what the hurry was to take the patient out. Safdarjung Hospital, like other major hospitals in India, have excellent medical facilities and doctors to take care of the critically-ill.”

Another senior doctor at AIIMS said: “When the Prime Minister can be treated and operated [here] what is the specific medical need to move a patient to Singapore?. What the government is saying does not seem to add up.”

Dr. M.C. Misra, head of the JPN Apex Trauma Centre at AIIMS and one of the physicians consulted on the victim’s move to Singapore, said the decision was taken since the patient “needed only the support of the ventilator for the transfer.” The decision, he said, “was ok-ed keeping in mind the best interest of the patient and as directed by the Government.”

He, however, added that an intestinal transplant right away was out of the question. “She is still very critical and the transplant surgery is a long one, lasting over three hours. We aren’t sure that the patient will be able to withstand the procedure in her current medical condition.”

ATTACKERS IN INDIA RAPE CASE TO FACE MURDER CHARGE

NEW DELHI (AP) — Indian police charged six men with murder on Saturday, hours after a woman who was gang-raped and beaten on a bus in New Delhi nearly two weeks ago died in a Singapore hospital.

New Delhi police spokesman Rajan Bhagat said the six face the death penalty if convicted, in a case that has triggered protests across India for greater protection for women from sexual violence, and raised questions about lax attitudes by police toward sexual crimes.

Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh said he was aware of the emotions the attack has stirred, adding it was up to all Indians to ensure that the young woman’s death will not have been in vain.

The victim “passed away peacefully” early Saturday at Mount Elizabeth hospital in Singapore with her family and officials of the Indian Embassy by her side, Dr. Kevin Loh, the chief executive of the hospital, said in a statement.

After 10 days at a hospital in New Delhi, the Indian capital, the woman was brought Thursday to Mount Elizabeth, which specializes in multi-organ transplants. Loh said the woman had been in extremely critical condition since Thursday, and by late Friday her condition had taken a turn for the worse, with her vital signs deteriorating.

“Despite all efforts by a team of eight specialists in Mount Elizabeth hospital to keep her stable, her condition continued to deteriorate over these two days,” Loh said. “She had suffered from severe organ failure following serious injuries to her body and brain. She was courageous in fighting for her life for so long against the odds, but the trauma to her body was too severe for her to overcome.”

The woman and a male friend, who have not been identified, were on a bus in New Delhi after watching a film on the evening of Dec. 16 when they were attacked by six men who raped her. The men beat the couple and inserted an iron rod into the woman’s body, resulting in severe organ damage. Both were then stripped and thrown off the bus, according to police.

Indian police have arrested six people in connection with the attack, which left the victim with severe internal injuries, a lung infection and brain damage. She also suffered from a heart attack while in the hospital in New Delhi.

Indian High Commissioner, or ambassador, T.C.A. Raghavan told reporters that the scale of the injuries the woman suffered was “very grave” and in the end “proved too much.”

He said arrangements were being made to return her body to India later Saturday.

The frightening nature of the crime shocked Indians, who have come out in the thousands for almost daily demonstrations.

As news of the victim’s death reached New Delhi early Saturday, hundreds of policemen sealed off the high-security India Gate area, where the seat of India’s government is located, in anticipation of more protests. The area is home to the president’s palace, the prime minister’s office and key defense, external affairs and home ministries.

The area had seen battles between protesters and police for days after the attack.

Ten metro stations in the vicinity also were closed Saturday, Bhagat said.

Police were allowing people to assemble at the Jantar Mantar and Ramlila grounds, the main areas allotted for protests in New Delhi, he said.

Mourners began gathering at Jantar Mantar to express their grief and demand stronger protection for women and the death penalty for rape, which is now punishable by a maximum of life imprisonment. Women face daily harassment across India, ranging from catcalls on the streets, groping and touching in public transport to rape.

They put a wreath studded with white flowers on the road, lit a candle and sat around it in a silent tribute to the young woman. Members of a theatre group nearby played small tambourine and sang songs urging the society to wake up and end discrimination against women.

Dipali, a working woman who uses one name, said the rape victim deserved justice. “I hope it never happens again to any girl,” she said.

Dozens of students of Jawaharlal Nehru University in New Delhi marched silently to the bus stop from where the rape victim and her friend had boarded the bus on Dec. 16. They carried placards reading “She is not with us but her story must awaken us.”

Nehra Kaul Mehra, a young Indian studying urban and gender policing at Colombia University in the United States, said “We come from a feudal and patriarchal set-up where we value men more than women.”

“We kill daughters before they are born. Those who live are fed less, educated less and segregated from boys,” she said with a black band of protest around her mouth.

Sonia Gandhi, the governing Congress party chief, assured the protesters in a statement that the rape victim’s death “deepens our determination to battle the pervasive, the shameful social attitudes and mindset that allow men to rape and molest women and girls with such an impunity.”

The protesters heckled Sheila Dikshit, the top elected leader of New Delhi state, when she came to express her sympathy with them and forced her to leave the protest venue. They blamed her for the deteriorating law and order situation in the Indian capital.

Meenakshi Ganguly, South Asia director of Human Rights Watch, said the woman’s death was a sobering reminder of the widespread sexual violence in India.

“The outrage now should lead to law reform that criminalizes all forms of sexual assault, strengthens mechanisms for implementation and accountability, so that the victims are not blamed and humiliated,” Ganguly said.

Prime Minister Singh said he understood the angry reaction to the attack and that he hoped all Indians would work together to make appropriate changes.

“These are perfectly understandable reactions from a young India and an India that genuinely desires change,” Singh said in a statement Saturday. “It would be a true homage to her memory if we are able to channel these emotions and energies into a constructive course of action.”

He said the government was examining the penalties for crimes such as rape “to enhance the safety and security of women.”

“I hope that the entire political class and civil society will set aside narrow sectional interests and agendas to help us all reach the end that we all desire — making India a demonstrably better and safer place for women to live in,” Singh said.

Mamta Sharma, head of the state-run National Commission for Women, said the “time has come for strict laws” to stop violence against women. “The society has to change its mindset to end crimes against women,” she said.

The tragedy has forced India to confront the reality that sexually assaulted women are often blamed for the crime, forcing them to keep quiet and discouraging them from reporting it to authorities for fear of exposing their families to ridicule. Police often refuse to accept complaints from those who are courageous enough to report the rapes, and the rare prosecutions that reach courts drag on for years.

Indian attitudes toward rape are so entrenched that even politicians and opinion makers have often suggested that women should not go out at night or wear clothes that might be seen provocative.

On Friday, Abhijit Mukherjee, a national lawmaker and the son of India’s president, apologized for calling the protesters “highly dented and painted” women who go from discos to demonstrations.

“I tender my unconditional apology to all the people whose sentiments got hurt,” he told NDTV news.

Several Indian celebrities reacted with sadness Saturday over the woman’s death. Bollywood star Amitabh Bachchan tweeted, “Her body has passed away, but her soul shall forever stir our hearts.”

Separately, authorities in Punjab state took action Thursday when an 18-year-old woman killed herself by drinking poison a month after she told police she was gang-raped.

State authorities suspended one police officer and fired two others on accusations they delayed investigating and taking action in the case. The three accused in the rape were arrested only on Thursday night, a month after the crime was reported.

“This is a very sensitive crime, I have taken it very seriously,” said Paramjit Singh Gill, a top police officer in the city of Patiala.

The Press Trust of India reported that the woman was raped Nov. 13 and reported the attack to police Nov. 27. But police harassed the girl, asked her embarrassing questions and took no action against the accused, PTI reported, citing police sources.

Authorities in the eastern state of Chhattisgarh also suspended a police officer on accusations he refused to register a rape complaint from a woman who said she had been attacked by a driver.

Raped at eight, hers is a lonely battle

Hyderabad: At 16, Sonal (NOT her real name) has few friends, does not attend school in Hyderabad and does not meet any relatives other than her parents and brother.

When she was eight, she was sexually assaulted by a relative. Her parents – financially weak and dependent on social support from relatives – ignored advice and warnings to accept a financial settlement from the alleged rapist. They were determined to get justice for their daughter.

It has been a stark and lonely fight. Taunts by other children forced Sonal to leave school. Her neighbours won’t let their children interact with her because they say as a “loose character” she could be a “bad influence on their child”.

“My daughter’s life and ours was ruined. We are fighting for justice. Why isn’t anyone helping us? Neither the government nor anyone else?” asks her mother in the two-room rented home where they live.

Sonal’s father is visually impaired, a bhajan singer who earns his living by performing at religious gatherings. Because he needed his wife to assist him in his travel, Sonal and her younger brother were sent to live with their paternal aunt in a village in the Yavatmal district of Maharashtra.

A man related to her had easy and supervised access to the children, and he allegedly sexually assaulted Sonal, then warned her not to talk about it.

Sonal was confused and terrified. She complained to her aunt who allegedly burnt her with a hot iron ladle to ensure she would not repeat her account to anyone else.

Two weeks later, Sonal and her brother returned to their home in Hyderabad. Sonal’s mother observed that the child was withdrawn and was so terrified of letting anyone approach her that she would not allow her mother to bathe her.

When Sonal was taken to a doctor, the mother was told her daughter had been sexually assaulted. She informed her husband and they decided they would file a police complaint.

After initially refuting Sonal’s account, the aunt and the man who allegedly raped the child, offered a financial settlement. This would save “family honour”, they said.

Sonal’s parents decided to risk isolation – emotional, social and financial – to file a police case against the man who had abused their daughter. The case was filed in Hyderabad and then transferred to Maharashtra where the alleged crime had taken place.

For five years, the family did the rounds of police stations and courts to ensure their daughter’s case would not be relegated to a file buried in an office somewhere.

In April 2009, a court in Maharashtra ruled in Sonal’s favour, but an appeal by the man convicted of assaulting her reversed that decision. In its order, the Bombay High Court observed that it was possible that a father had accused a relative of rape to extract a petty amount in the range of Rs. 1200.

The Maharashtra government did not challenge the acquittal in the Supreme Court.

The family was running out of money and strength. A software engineer named Saurabh, who saw a report on NDTV, decided to help Sonal and her family.

He moved from Hyderabad to Delhi and liaised with the Human Rights Law Network – an association of lawyers who donate their services – to file a petition in the Supreme Court on behalf of Sonal’s parents.

“How can anyone say that for 1200 rupees, a father would put his daughter’s chastity at stake? Whereas he has spent several times that amount in trying to pursue the case,” he said.

In India, the conviction rate among rape cases hovers at about 26%. Experts point out that most often, the acquittals are inevitable because of poor investigation by the police. Saurabh, who is 32, says Sonal’s story is no different. “It is very obvious that the evidence of the doctor, who examined the child and gave a report, must be taken on record. Also the testimony of the person to who child first reported the crime, in this case the aunt. Both of that were not done. When in the High Court the questions were asked about this evidence, the prosecution had no answer,” he said.

‘They Tried Throwing Me Out Of The Bus, But I Wouldn’t Allow It’
An exclusive interview with the 28-year-old software engineer who was with ‘Jagruti’

The 28-year-old software engineer who was with ‘Jagruti’ during the gangrape says she told him from her hospital bed that “mujhe sangharsh karna hai (I must fight)”. He gave an exclusive interview to Chandrani Banerjee:

What happened that December 16 night?

I am the complainant and eyewitness to the whole incident. I stand by each word that has appeared in the media. There is no duplication or confusion about any statement. That said, I don’t want to revisit the incident now…it’s etched in my memory forever. The nightmare is yet to end.

    How are you faring?

I was treated immediately and discharged. I am on medication. The pain has gone down but I guess it’ll take some time to heal. I am just thinking about her recovery now. I hope it happens fast. I understand that doctors are doing their best and with international medical help she should recover. I have no words to express myself. The incident was traumatic and unbelievable. Somehow our courage helped us cope with the circumstances.

Do you have an idea about how she’s doing?

I went to meet her twice at Safdarjung Hospital. She is very brave and I am sure she will soon be out of danger.

    Did she recognise you?

She was conscious and did recognise and talk to me. She was in OK shape the day I last met her.

Care to share details of your conversation with her?

Well, she asked about my health and was happy that the police arrested the accused so quickly. She also seemed positive about her future. She told me, “Mujhe sangharsh karna hai.” She said she’ll fight it out.

You are a complainant and eyewitness so you’ll be part of the lengthy legal procedure.

I am aware of my responsibilities. The guilty must be punished and for that I’ll extend every help to the police.

The test identification parade (TIP) of all the accused has been conducted?

Mukesh and Akshaya have been identified, the other accused have refused a tip. A minor who says he is six months short of 18 is also part of the crime. He’ll get away with a lesser sentence as a juvenile. We don’t want that to happen. We are planning legal action to verify Raju’s age. And anyway, he’ll be an adult in five months.

People have taken to the streets demanding justice and harsh punishment in the case?

Yes, I saw it on TV and the newspapers. It’s very encouraging that people are expressing their anger. This sort of incident affects the entire working middle class. I hope the protest ends with a positive outcome.

Do you think the burning of vehicles and all-round violence at the protests was justified?

Don’t get me wrong. I am not justifying violence of any kind. I feel protest marches do help as it creates awareness and forces the government to act. The politicisation of the matter, though, is a bit disappointing.

What do you think would be the appropriate punishment for the rapists?

Enforcement is more important than a new law. I believe there are provisions that recommend the death penalty but stricter punishment and enforcement both depend on political will. I demand a strong political will from our elected members. I strongly believe that can be a deterrent.

You fought with seven men alone and later were out on the road seeking help. What was on your mind?

I was sure I would not leave her no matter what. Later, I just tried to keep up her spirits, give her courage, telling her it wasn’t about her. It was about an incident where we both were brutally attacked. I just told her that we will recover, that we will survive, come out of this alive. They tried to throw me out of the bus but I was sure that I wouldn’t let that happen, that I would not leave her with these men.

To the public, I just want to say that everyone has to stand up, be responsible when faced with such a situation. We have to fight back, we can’t just continue suffering silently.

Delhi gang-rape case: main accused Ram Singh commits suicide in Tihar Jail

In a huge security lapse, Ram Singh, the main accused in the gang-rape of a medical student in a moving bus in Delhi last December, has committed suicide at Tihar Jail, where he was lodged.

Tihar Jail officials said Ram Singh hanged himself in Jail Number 3, at around 5 this morning. His body has been taken to Deen Dayal Upadhyay Hospital in the capital.

Ram Singh was the driver of the bus in which six men inflicted horrific assault on 23-year-old student Amanat (Not her real name) in Delhi. Besides Ram Singh, his brother Mukesh and three other men are being tried in the case. The sixth accused is a minor and is being tried separately by the Juvenile Justice Board.

Tihar Jail officials said the five men at Tihar were lodged in isolated cells after other inmates taunted them and also tried to attack them. They were also under a “suicide watch”.

The men are accused of gang-raping and brutally assaulting the student on December 16 last year and then throwing her out of the bus along with a man she was with that evening. The incident sparked outrage in the country and people took to the streets to demand the most stringent punishment for the accused.

The young woman fought a valiant battle for her life in hospital for 13 days, but her injuries were too severe and she died in a Singapore hospital on December 29.

All the accused were arrested within days of the horrific assault and the case was assigned to a fast-track court. It also led the government to draft new and more stringent anti-rape laws.

Ram Singh’s lawyer, VK Anand, had petitioned the Supreme Court in January to shift the case out of Delhi, pleading that his client would not receive a fair trial in Delhi. Mr Anand had sought that the trial be moved to anywhere else in the country except Uttar Pradesh, where the girl came from.

You had said that you were having problems with the TQ Touch thing on mobile so I had changed it to look just like on desktop.

I have been trying to make the theme work properly on mobiles. Check this out on your mobile and let me know what you think.

In the beginning i had no problem visiting your site from mobile but later on it started slowing down. Sometime later, you changed it to complete mobile view and it was good but not for logging in or posting stuff but just for visits. Then you changed something on main website and then everything changed after. Now full view is visible but it takes time to load and slows down while scrolling or moving from one post to another. Even if i have to comment something, the “post comment” button doesn’t click at all.

The theme you provided is good but after implementation, sometimes it turns to usual black and white mobile site mode. Please see to it that it remains as the link you have provided above.

Why don’t you just create an IOS App for your site just like Bollywood hungama App or UTV Stars App? You can even charge viewers to post something on premium membership. Viewing experience as well as communication experience with such apps, develop more interest and attracts more viewership. Such apps are affordable & increases the value of websites.

        • sputnik 11 years ago

That theme is still work in progress. I have to get it working properly.

Creating Mobile Apps costs money and right now I am just making enough from Ads to cover for the hosting expenses. I don’t like asking people to pay/donate for using the site.

Meanwhile you can check out these WordPress Apps and see if these work out better for you.

All four men sentenced to death. I think the juvenile should have got same punishment. Its ridiculous that he got away with 3 years for the same crime.

Girl gang-raped at gunpoint in front of brother

    This is ridiculous

MUZAFFARNAGAR: An 18-year-old girl was allegedly gang-raped at gunpoint by four youths in front of her brother in Saharanpur district, police said here on Sunday.

The victim and her brother were on their way to Saharanpur from Karnal yesterday when they asked for a lift from the accused, SP Dharmender Singh said.

However, they were taken to a nearby field where the girl was gangraped at gun point, he said.

The accused threatened to kill them if they told anyone about the incident before fleeing from the spot.

The victim has been sent for medical exam, the SP said. A case has been registered and search is on for the accused, Singh said.

New Delhi Gang Rape Convict Blames Victim For Attack: ‘She Shouldn’t Have Fought Back’

One of the men sentenced to death for raping and killing a woman in a brutal 2012 gang attack on a New Delhi bus said in a documentary that if their victim had not fought back she would not have been killed.

Instead, the 23-year-old woman should have remained silent and allowed the rape, said Mukesh Singh, who was driving the bus for much of the time that the woman was being attacked.

Singh was among four men convicted and sentenced to be executed for the rape-murder — a crime that shocked Indians and prompted hundreds of thousands to take to the streets in protest. In response, India’s government rushed legislation doubling prison terms for rapists to 20 years and criminalizing voyeurism, stalking and the trafficking of women.

Jagmati Sangwan, general secretary of the All India Democratic Women’s Association, noted that Singh showed no remorse for the crime. The government, she said, should create “an environment of safety and security” for women in trains, buses and public places.

Singh’s interview is from the documentary “India’s Daughter” by British filmmaker Leslee Udwin. It will be shown on Sunday, International Women’s Day, in India, Britain, Denmark, Sweden and several other countries. A transcript of the 2013 interview was released Tuesday.

“A girl is far more responsible for rape than a boy,” Singh said. “A decent girl won’t roam around at 9 o’clock at night. … Housework and housekeeping is for girls, not roaming in discos and bars at night doing wrong things, wearing wrong clothes.”

The woman and a male friend were returning home from seeing a movie at an upscale mall when they were tricked by the men into getting on the bus, which the men had taken out for a joyride. The attackers beat her friend and took turns raping the woman. They penetrated her with a rod, leaving severe internal injuries that led to her death two weeks later.

Singh and three other men were convicted in 2013 in an unusually fast trial for India’s chaotic justice system. They confessed to the attack but later retracted their confessions, saying they’d been tortured into admitting their involvement. Appeals against their death sentences are pending in the Supreme Court.

Singh suggested that the attack was to teach the woman and her friend a lesson that they should not have been out late at night.

The death penalty, he said, would make things even more dangerous for women. “Now when they rape, they won’t leave the girl like we did. They will kill her,” Singh said.

Sangwan, the activist, said that changing the mindset is not easy in India, where politicians and religious leaders encourage conservative forces by dictating how women should dress and enforcing strict social norms about gender roles. “The solution (lies) in more and more women taking up jobs in various fields and the government creating an environment of safety and security for them in trains, buses and public places,” she said.

A spokesman at the New Delhi jail objected to the filmmakers releasing the documentary without their approval.

A spokesman for Tihar Jail, where the interview was filmed, said Udwin had agreed to allow them to screen the video before it was released.

“We want to see the documentary, as it can be screened only after it is approved by authorities,” said jail spokesman Mukesh Prasad.

Udwin, however, said she had obtained necessary clearances from jail authorities as well as India’s home ministry for her documentary and for interviewing the convicts in the prison.

“I had first submitted an unedited version of the documentary and later an edited version as demanded by prison authorities,” Udwin told reporters in New Delhi.

She expressed surprise at the jail spokesman’s claim and said she had not received any communication from prison authorities along those lines.

read this yesterday. this guy deserves something worse than just death.may be he should be given disease and allowed to live.but he is rright about one thing. from now on rapists trying to kill the girl off cases may be more. girls need to be careful. they need to get trained mentally and phyiscally to act wisely in such untoward situation.and one desparate solution which i always suggest for girls – if travelling late is inevitable, carry a Gun

      • sputnik 9 years ago

Yeah this guy deserves something worse than just death. May be treat him in the same brutal fashion as the girl was and then not allow him any medical treatment and let him rot to death.

This sick bastard seems to think that he was teaching the girl a lesson by gang raping her. And he thinks that they did a favor by not killing the girl then itself.

She died. So its not like they left any chance for her to be alive even when there was no death penalty for rape. He just doesn’t want to be given the death penalty for his crime.

Its been more than 2 years but these bastards have still not been punished and one of them will get away with just 3 years in a juvenile remand home. This is why rapists aren’t afraid to rape. If there isn’t any media attention they might not even get nabbed. Even if they are arrested they know the judicial process will take forever and they will get only 6 years imprisonment at worse for rape. Where there is swift justice and exemplary punishment like death penalty for rapes then it will bring some fear to would be rapists.

        • Baba 9 years ago

the video clip of that guy interview is out along with parents reaction. i decided not to share it. her mother was saying that guy used to smile in the court trials.

          • sputnik 9 years ago

He is lying that he was only driving the bus and that he did not rape her.

““The 15 or 20 minutes of the incident, I was driving the bus. The girl was screaming, ‘Help me, help me.’ The juvenile put his hand in her and pulled out something. It was her intestines …We dragged her to the front of the bus and threw her out.”

And these are the great views of the defense lawyers.

“We have the best culture. In our culture, there is no place for a woman,” says one man in Udwin’s film. What is shocking is that he is ML Sharma, defence lawyer for the men convicted of Jyoti’s rape and murder. A second defence lawyer, AP Singh, says if his daughter or sister “engaged in pre-marital activities … in front of my entire family, I would put petrol on her and set her alight”.

            https://www.theguardian.com/film/2015/mar/01/indias-daughter-documentary-rape-delhi-women-indian-men-attitudes

And he did try to run over her after throwing her from the bus according to this.

“And after the rapists had enough, rather than ‘dropping her off’ they threw her and her friend from the moving bus. Mukesh Singh then allegedly tried to run them over, but her friend had enough strength left to pull Jyoti out of the way.”
