Gabbar Is Back Has Good Opening
Friday 01 May 2015 12.30 IST
Box Office India Trade Network

Gabbar Is Back is had a very good start at some places and was decent in other places. Overall the opening was good at around 40-45 %. It is the best opening for a Hindi film this year but that is not saying much as hardly any films have opened. The occupancies are less than Fast & Furious 7 and The Avengers – Age Of Ultron but has more screens than those films.

It is the best start for an Akshay Kumar starrers in a long time. Much better than films like Entertainment, Baby and Holiday though the last named film picked up rapidly from late afternoon.

The opening was best in Rajasthan, CI and UP while the big multiplexes in metros have just average start. The film has released on a holiday which is why the opening is good but on a holiday the opening should be excellent or bumper. The first day number will be good for Gabbar Is Back but the opening morning numbers don’t suggest a 15 crore nett plus number which was the requirement for the film due to holiday for May Day.

Top Opening Occupancies 2015 – Gabbar Is Back Tops
    Friday 01 May 2015 14.30 IST
    Box Office India Trade Network

Gabbar Is Back has managed the best opening of the year as far as Hindi films are concerned but if we take into account its a holiday then the opening is not much better than Roy. It is the single screen start that has is basically the difference between Gabbar Is Back and Roy. Below are the average occupancies in morning shows and just six films have gone over 20%.

    1. Gabbar – 40%

    2. Roy – 32.5 %

    3. Badlapur – 27.5%

    4. Baby – 25%

    5. Tevar – 25%

    6. Ek Thi Leela – 22.5%

Note – The openings do not reflect the opening day collections as films drop through the day like Ek Thi Leela and others like Baby pick up steadily.

Gabbar Is Back Collects Well On Day One
    Friday 01 May 2015 23.30 IST
    Box Office India Trade Network

Gabbar Is Back is has had a good first day with collections looking to be around 11.50 crore nett but when you factor in that it was a holiday in some parts of the country then the 11 crore nett plus number is not so good.

It is the biggest opening day of the year for Hindi films easily surpassing the 9.40 crore nett of Roy. Akshay Kumar’s last release Baby had opened to less than 8 crore nett and it is way ahead of that but these were not exactly big numbers to beat. The film has collected well in Rajasthan, CPCI, Bihar and most parts of Mumbai circuit.

Rajasthan has grossed a good 75 lakhs nett plus while Delhi/UP will cross 2 crore nett but Delhi city has not performed too well. There was not a holiday in North so collections did not get a boost there.

Gabbar Is Back Second Day Business
    Sunday 03 May 2015 11.30 IST
    Box Office India Trade Network

Gabbar Is Back did decent business on Saturday with a total of around 11 crore nett. The film mainly dropped in areas with a holiday on Friday. The approx first two day business of Gabbar Is Back is as follows.

    Friday – 12,30,00,000
    Saturday – 10,90,00,000

    TOTAL – 23,20,00,000

The film could have dropped more as the first day figure was not good for a day with a holiday in many areas but Saturday has turned out to be okay. The film will be dependent on business outside the metros in the long run.

Gabbar Is Back Collects Well On Sunday
    Sunday 03 May 2015 23.30 IST
    Box Office India Trade Network

Gabbar Is Back had a good Sunday on the strength of business outside the big metros with collections set to be around 14 crore nett. The weekend will be around 37 crore nett which is not good but also not too bad giving the film a chance of a respectable lifetime total and the chance for its Indian theatrical distributor to cover.

The film showed good gains all over especially in UP and Rajasthan which were below par in first two days for this type of film. There is a holiday in places like Delhi, MP and Mumbai for Buddha Purnima on Monday so it will get a bit of a boost and the holds from Tuesday onwards will be crucial as the film needs a good second week.

The film has done much better than films like Baby (29.75 crore nett weekend) and Entertainment (31.25 crore nett weekend) but is less than Akshay Kumar’s last hit Holiday – A Soldier Is Never Off Duty which had a weekend of a little over 41 crore nett.

It is an absolutely dangerous film. Just imagine if after watching the well made film some in the audience is carried away by the message conveyed by their favourite hero and take to vigilantism in a violent way. Or can it be called communism? I think there was a time when a name inspired fear in the minds of the corrupt and the rich. The name was of a famous don.

I loved the well enacted, tautly directed, tightly edited powerful film. But I wonder what will happen if we take to anarchy and violence to correct all problems.
Arvind Kejriwal says doing dharna is the only way. He didn’t like the way Akki tackles the problem of corruption.

I think the only way is the Gandhian way to deal with any problem politically. Or is it?

The film is food for thought.

Good Sunday Gives Gabbar Is Back Chance Of Being A Hit
    Monday 04 May 2015 10.00 IST
    Box Office India Trade Network

Gabbar Is Back Has scored well on Sunday with an apprx 15 crore nett total. It could even be a little more depending on the final figure in Mumbai. The weekend has gone to around 38.50 crore thanks to the good Sunday business. There were huge jumps in business in many circuits like Delhi/UP, East Punjab and Rajasthan.

There is a holiday in places like Delhi, MP and Mumbai for Buddha Purnima on Monday so it should have a good Monday and the trend does look positive due to the good business on Sunday. The overall weekend figure is not good but is par for the course and now a 60 crore nett week which would be pretty good is a possibility.

Gabbar Is Back has an outside chance of being that first real hit of the year with probaby the window being the major hurdle. Next week films will not pose much of a problem but it’s run maybe cut short with the release of the Bombay Velvet. If the weekend was 10-15% higher then the window would not be an issue.

Gabbar Is Back v Holiday Weekend Territorial Comparison
    Monday 04 May 2015 15.00 IST
    Box Office India Trade Network

Gabbar Is Back has grossed 7% less than Holiday – A Soldier Is Never Off Duty which was released last year. The trend is also very similar if we take out the holiday factor for day one but at a slightly lower level. Holiday took off on the Sunday with collections of 16.75 crore nett as the family and masses came and it sustained well as the word of mouth was strong from this audience. Here this audience has also come especially outside metros and now the next few days will tell how this audience received the film.

Gabbar Is Back has gone to 15.25 crore nett plus on Sunday and the Sunday difference with Holiday was mainly from Maharastra where the Marathi film Time Pass 2 is going strong.

The disappointments are Gujarat and CI which should be better for this type of film. Below is the weekend territorial comparison between Gabbar Is Back and Holiday – A Soldier Is Never Off Duty.

Four Days Delhi UP – Gabbar Is Back Excellent Hold
    Monday 04 May 2015 23.30 IST
    Box Office India Trade Network

Gabbar Is Back had a super strong hold on Monday in Delhi/UP. It was a holiday in parts but still the collections were very strong showing just 25% drop on Monday. The first four day business of Gabbar Is Back in Delhi/UP is as follows.

    Friday – 2,26,00,000

    Saturday – 2,21,00,000

    Sunday – 3,20,00,000

    Monday – 1,60,00,000 apprx

    TOTAL – 9,27,00,000

The collections will be up and down in the various circuits as some have part holidays while others are normal. The film should comfortably show a better hold than the normal 50% drop from Friday and could have a 7 crore nett Monday. If Maharashtra and Madhya Pradesh which also have part holidays behave like Delhi/UP it could even be better.

Gabbar Is Back Has Good First Week
    Friday 08 May 2015 11.30 IST
    Box Office India Trade Network

Gabbar Is Back held up well from Monday after a fair weekend. The film grossed 58.50 crore nett in week one which is easily the best of the year beating the 52 crore nett of Baby another Akshay Kumar starrer. Gabbar Is Back had two partial holiday but Baby had the much bigger Republic Day holiday which is a bigger advantage.

The film has put up good to decent figures in most circuits. Mysore is low but that is expected for this type of film. Mysore is the only circuit where collections are less than Baby.

The second week is all important for the film as it must hold well, it has chances to be highest grosser of year but if it falls short it should have the highest distributor share of the year as it clocked up a 30 crore plus share in week one and should beat the 38 crore of Baby.

The film did have competition at metro multiplexes from Piku but at many centtres its second week collections were better than Piku. in fact better than both the new releases (Piku and Kuch Kuch Locha Hai) put together. It is the highest grossing film of 2015 in many circuits in two weeeks and should become the highest grossing film Hindi film of 2015 by the end of its run.

The film will cross 3 crore nett in Bihar which is more than double the business of any other releases of 2015.

Gabbar Is Back At 84 Crore In Three Weeks
    Friday 22 May 2015 11.30 IST
    Box Office India Trade Network

Gabbar Is Back is the biggest grosser of 2015 as it has collected 84 crore nett apprx in three weeks. The film has done well despite competition from new releases over the last two weeks. Bombay velvet did not provide competition but Gabbar Is Back lost a lot of screen space due to its release especially in single screens and its pretty clear that Gabbar Is Back would have done better in these screens despite being in week three..

The performance in Bihar is very good where it will be amongst the top fifteen grossing films. It will not reach top 25 in any other circuit.

The film should just about cross the 85 crore nett mark with a distributor share of 43.50 crore apprx.
