Dilwale Has Strong Start Bajirao Mastani Slow Start
Friday 18 December 2015 11.30 IST

Dilwale had a strong opening of around 65% while Bajirao Mastani was slower with a 30% start on average with the clash really only happening in multiplexes of Mumbai and Pune while the rest of the country saw a healthy advantage for Dilwale.

Dilwale had a very big lead in East Punjab, Nizam / Andhra, Mysore and East India while most other areas outside Mumbai and Pune had a good lead. The gap in above circuits was double and even more at some centres. It was certain properties of Mumbai and Pune where both films had similar occupancy. The key area Gujarat also saw Dilwale leading and it will important for Bajirao Mastani to close the gap in the evening if it is to have any chance of competing as without Gujarat the film can’t go anywhere.

Despite the strong opening, the screenings of Dilwale are 65% of Prem Ratan Dhan Payo with around 12000 shows per day compared to 18000 plus of Prem Ratan Dhan Payo. If the film can get a 20 crore nett plus number up on day one, fair value for that would be close to 30 crore nett.

Bajirao Mastani is depending on word of mouth especially outside the Mumbai Pune belt and it has to make strides quickly preferably by evening or by tomorrow at the latest if it is to have a chance.

Dilwale To Beat PRDP Holiday Opening In Some Circuits
    Friday 18 December 2015 17.00 IST
    Box Office India Trade Network

Dilwale will beat the holiday opening day figures of Prem Ratan Dhan Payo in some circuits, it is mainly small circuits where it is a 100% certainty to beat Prem Ratan Dhan Payo but sill considering less screens, competition from another film and no holiday it was not expected to beat anywhere.

The figures of Dilwale as compared to Prem Ratan Dhan Payo will be better in Assam and Tamil Nadu / Kerala. These are small circuits but bigger circuits like Bihar, West Bengal and Mysore also have a chance. West Bengal and Mysore are evening circuits and could reach the numbers of Prem Ratan Dhan Payo despite the opening being less.

The real big circuits like Mumbai, Delhi/UP and East Punjab are well short but that is on the expected lines due to the circumstances.

The fate of Bajirao Mastani hangs on the business of Delhi / Punjab and Gujarat. Mumbai city and Pune are doing pretty well especially the latter but needs support of either (preferably both) North or Gujarat to go anywhere.

The film is very poor in single screens outside Maharashtra so that big chunk of multiplex business in Delhi and Punjab becomes most important. The collections remained low in both North and Gujarat even in afternoon shows and it will be about the post 6pm audience.

Dilwale And Bajirao Mastani First Day Estimates
    Saturday 19 December 2015 01.00 IST

Dilwale has had a very good first day with collections of 21-22 crore nett as per early estimates. The film was also affected by some disruptions in Maharashtra, Rajasthan and Gujarat but still its a big number going by the release. A full out release could have seen a 30 core nett number on a non holiday or at least very close to it.

The film has scored very well in South India and East India. The numbers in Nizam / Andhra, Mysore, Tamil Nadu / Kerala, West Bengal, Bihar, Assam and Orissa are excellent as release was a bit more normal with number of screens near to what it would have got normally. South India and West Bengal are also due to the Shahrukh Khan factor.

The rest of the country has seen good collections rather than excellent due to screens being less due to the clash with Bajirao Mastani. Delhi/ UP has been hit for 1 crore due to Bajirao Mastaani getting the best single screens even though it has poor collections on them.

Bajirao Mastaani has grossed around 11.5-12 crore nett as per early estimates. It is a low number but if you take into account the clash with Dilwale and the cast its not too bad. Obviously for the costs involved the film needed a much higher number. The film has done well in Maharashtra but rest of the country has not performed with UP and East India having very dull collections. The film was also affected by some disruptions in Maharashtra. It is a 15-16 crore nett number on fair value if it was a solo release which is actually what it needed as a minimum to go towards recovery.

There was a Tamil and Telugu version of the film which is a total disaster with collections even lower than the same version of Prem Ratan Dhan Payo which also suffered a similar fate.

Dilwale Collects Very Well On Day One
    Saturday 19 December 2015 12.00 IST

Dilwale did very well on day with collections of 21.50 crore nett. Although it does not compare well with some of the biggest openers but that is because of less screenings due to the clash and on top it was not even a holiday. The film did put up some big numbers in East India and South India. South India was best especially Nizam / Andhra and Tamil Nadu / Kerala

The core belts of Mumbai, Delhi /UP, East Punjab and Central India were at least 40-50% lower than they should have been due to limited screenings. It had big leads over Bajirao Mastani apart from Maharashtra where Mumbai city and Pune city saw both films put up similar collections.

The film does have scope for improvement as it lost some business due to disruptions in a few states and as long as there is no repeat it should have better collections in the areas. The areas where it has done very well will find it hard to improve. The disruptions which lead to shows being cancelled in many parts also affected business so those areas can make ground if everything is okay on Saturday

    Bajirao Mastani First Day Collections
    Saturday 19 December 2015 15.00 IST

Bajirao Mastaani was below thw mark on day one with 12.25 crore nett as it suffered due to the clash with Dilwale. The film only saw good collections in Maharashtra with the rest of the country not really performing. Mysore was also pretty good. Mumbai circuit was more than 40% of the all India collections.

The mass circuits were always going to find it hard. For North India, it was the regional Maharashtra flavor of the film and circuits like West Bengal and Nizam / Andhra where it could have collected well are Shahrukh Khan strong circuits. The film could have grossed 4-5 crore nett more if it was a solo release which would have been a good platform to build from.

The film should manage growth on Saturday as its better collections are at premium multiplexes which have best collections on Saturday. The film will need big support from other major regions outside Maharashtra over the weekend if it is to make any real headway. The film also had a dubbed version which very poor with around 30 lakhs nett

Dilwale And Bajirao Mastani Day Two Estimates
    Sunday 20 December 2015 01.30 IST

Dilwale is looking at a little drop in collections on Saturday as the circuits where it opened strongly are set to drop while others will be flat or up a little. If Mumbai circuit can make decent gains the film may have the same total as Friday otherwise it will be around the 20 crore nett mark. Some centres centres remained closed due to protests especially in CP Berar circuit.

The day two number is still good but like the Diwali release Prem Ratan Dhan Payo the film is not getting big numbers all over and here there is no holiday advantage either. The film is being held back in crucial areas like Mumbai, North and Central India. Mumbai is understandable as Bajirao Mastani is giving it good competition but North and Central will have to go up a level if it is to have a chance to get a big lifetime number.

Bajirao Mastani will show decent gains of 20-25% to take it to around the 15 crore nett mark as multiplexes in the big cities showed growth. The film really needed more growth but still has an outside chance if it can go on a run over the next few weeks.

    Dilwale Second Day Business

    Friday – 19,50,00,000 apprx

The second day number is still good but the performance is not good all over as it should be for a film like this.

    Bajirao Mastani Second Day Business

    Friday – 15,00,00,00 apprx

    TOTAL – 27,25,00,000

Dilwale And Bajirao Mastani Weekend Estimates
    Monday 21 December 2015 09.00 IST
    Box Office India Trade Network

Dilwale had a strong Sunday growing around 15-20% to gross around 23 crore nett. the figure could be come out a little higher as some cities in Gujarat have shown big gains and if this is the case with all the states then the figure could go higher.

The disruptions that the film faced in various regions over the first two days due to political issues were less on Sunday. The weekend of the film will be around 64 crore nett which is good total as it was a non holiday weekend and the screenings were around 40% less than what a big film like this world normally get. Some circuits have under performed due to less screens especially Delhi /UP but generally most circuits are good with some having excellent weekend business.

Bajirao Mastaani also showed 15-20% growth on Sunday as its business will be in the range of 17.50 crore nett. The weekend will be around 45 crore nett which is actually a good number if looked at it from the face value point of view but low for the costs involved. It really needed a higher start or the growth on Saturday and Sunday to be higher.

Bajirao Mastani fared very well in Maharashtra and Mysore, fair in other parts with West Bengal, Bihar, Assam and Orissa being poor. The film also had a Telugu and Tamil version which fared very poorly and grossed around 75 lakhs nett over the weekend.

Bajirao Mastani Holds Very Strongly On Monday
    Monday 21 December 2015 23.00 IST

Bajirao Mastani has held very strongly on Monday and is set to drop in the 15-20% range from Friday which may well mean business in the 10 crore nett region. The film had a fair trend over the weekend but on Monday the film has really come into its own. The business was strong in Maharashtra over the weekend and on Monday most other circuits have held up very well while Maharashtra continued its strong run.

The collections on Monday may well edge past Dilwale which will show a drop of 50-55% from Friday. Dilwale has fallen in the big cites while smaller cities have held better but the tables have turned on Monday and Bajirao Mastani will start eating into that 20 crore nett weekend lead of Dilwale on the weekdays, possibly even on Monday.

The Monday business now does give a good chance of recovery for Bajirao Mastani which looked a long shot over the weekend.

    Bajirao Mastani First Tuesday Business
    Wednesday 23 December 2015 11.00 IST
    Box Office India Trade Network

Bajirao Mastani was rock steady on Tuesday with just a 5% drop after a very strong Monday. The business of Bajirao Mastaani over the first five days is as follows.

    Friday – 12,25,00,000
    Saturday – 15,00,00,00

    Monday – 10,00,00,000
    Tuesday – 9,50,00,000 apprx
    TOTAL – 64,50,00,000

The first week of the film should be around 80 crore nett but with this solid Tuesday business it will be the second week where the film will put up a very good total. The film ia being lead by Mumbai circuit followed by South which is now also putting up very good numbers. East India is weakest though is holding well at low levels.

    Dilwale First Tuesday Business
    Wednesday 23 December 2015 11.00 IST

    TOTAL – 81,10,00,000

    Dilwale Has Good First Week
    Friday 25 December 2015 12.00 IST
    Box Office India Trade Network

Dilwale has had a good first week of around 97 crore nett though the trend over the weekdays is average. For a normal film a 20% drop from Monday to Thursday would be good but Dilwale is an event film and although the weekend was strong it was not an optimum release which meant less business was consumed over the weekend so the weekdays should have done better. Also the weekday business is less than Bajirao Mastani despite a much better weekend.

The film has fared very well in West Bengal, Nizam / Andhra, Mysore and Tamil Nadu / Kerala. In the latter it will become the highest Hindi grosser of the year in just ten days.

The problem is all the above markets are not the core Hindi markets and that is where the film has suffered. Mumbai circuit has had strong competition from day one so the performance in Mumbai is understandable but North and Central India should be collecting much better especially the latter as its masala genre and central India normally leads for the genre.

The film does not have a problem for recovery as the first week in India is big enough with reasonable holds and Overseas is huge but eventually the India theatrical business will not be the sort that is expected from a big Shahrukh Khan film. The 300 crore nett number going around was never going to happen due to two films releasing together but 200 crore nett or close to it was a realistic expectation but it is going to fell short of that.

Bajirao Mastani Has Very Strong Weekday Trend
    Friday 25 December 2015 12.30 IST
    Box Office India Trade Network

Bajirao Mastani has managed a good first week after a decent weekend. The film has had a very strong hold on the weekdays with the best business coming on Thursday out of all the weekdays. The film has grossed 83.50 crore nett in week one with a 45 crore nett and 38.50 crore nett weekend to weekday split.

The film is a huge hit in Mumbai circuit with business in week one going over 30 crore nett. Mumbai circuit had started well enough on day one but is the other circuits barring East India which have slowly come on board for the film which has really helped the film to a solid first week total. The business in West Bengal and Bihar is below the mark but should not make much a difference now as the rest of India is now doing good to very good business.

Recovery had looked impossible for the film on the initial it had taken but its weekday business has totally changed the scenario for the film. On this weekday trend the film is certain to hit 150 crore nett mark which would ensure recovery but there is a chance that the film could even go to 175 crore nett depending on the second week figures.

    Monday 28 December 2015 11.30 IST
