Times of India Review by Nikhat Kazmi

“It’s the crackling chemistry between John Abraham and Akshay Kumar which makes Desi Boyz such a fun film. The guy bonding between them had already been showcased in Garam Masala but this film carries the camaraderie even further. True, the film doesn’t boast of anything that even comes close to an intelligent quotient, but the perfectly tuned tango, salsa, hip hop between the boyz gives it a spicy edge and keeps you in your seats, goofily munching your popcorns.”

“Approximately two hour long, Rohit Dhawan’s ‘Desi Boyz’ is not a bad bet this weekend as its fun, pacey and entertaining. It’s got all the ingredients of success, a good star-cast, correct balance of emotions and humour and is visually appealing giving a complete cinematic experience to an average cine goer.”

“Honest performances, music, fast-paced screenplay and cinematography get a thumps up. Weak storyline, poor characterization and clumsy first half are the weak points. On the whole, Desi Boyz is surely a one-time watch with Sanjay Dutt’s presence a USP of the film.”

“If your idea of ‘boys gone desi’ is tearing out of one’s clothes and jumping into a mix of disco bhangra that is supposed to charm women mindlessly, you know which movie to watch this weekend.”

“On the whole, DESI BOYZ has an entertaining first half and decent performances as its plusses, but a tedious and least compelling second hour stands out like a sore thumb. Leaves a lot to be desired! ”

“But the greatest love affair in the movie is between Akshay and John-with Akshay even slapping John on the butt. You get the drift? Avoid at all costs. And please thank the CBFC for giving this piece of nonsense-where even the venerable Anupam Kher has to be tickled suggestively by someone who charges 200 pounds an hour-an A rating. The perfect movie for our Sunny Leone times?”

“Neither is watching Rohit Dhawan’s Desi Boyz, a film that paints so ridiculously rosy a picture of the gigolo life that it plays like a recruitment film sponsored by pimps. Walk away from this disaster and try harder next time. (Is it okay if we don’t hold our breath just yet?)”

“Ah well, maybe I’m giving it more thought than it deserves, because frankly the film did make me laugh out loud in a couple of places. If your expectations are low, you may not be disappointed with Desi Boyz. To be fair, it’s Akshay Kumar’s best film in quite a few years.”

Apunkachoice.com Review

“All in all, Desi Boyz is a film that’s not a laugh riot but just about a tolerable one-time watch. Its humour may be irreverent, facetious and even crass, but it works at times.”

“Yet, the film isn’t unwatchable. Pritam’s soundtrack has some winning tunes, and the musical numbers are shot deliciously. What fails ‘Desi Boyz’ in the end is that it’s such a generic, indifferent film. Rohit Dhawan leaves no directorial imprint for a first-time filmmaker, and there’s little in this movie that you haven’t seen before. I’m going with two out of five for ‘Desi Boyz’. Go in with modest expectations and perhaps you won’t come out dissatisfied.”

Deccan Chronicle Review by Khalid Mohamed

“In the event, do the Boys have anything going for them? Ummm, the cinematography by Natarajan Subramaniam is an asset for sure. So is the imaginative choreography for the song Allah maaf kare. Bottomwhine: Too much in-your-face brawn in this no-brainer.”

“The film starts on the very promising note with Dhawan taking care of all the relevant details. It progresses in an even better manner leaving a lot of smiles on your face. The second half does get dragged when Jerry joins college, there could have been a better way to take it forward. The climax again paces up giving it momentum and a good end. However, a scene when Jerry applies a technique to get a job is lifted from a video that was doing rounds of social networking sites for long.

    Performances:

Akshay Kumar acts well. His performance at times looks monotonous, something like we saw in ‘Houseful’ but he is makes it up with his natural comic timing. John Abraham has enriched his acting prowess. His expressions look made-up at places but his improved dance moves make up for them. Deepika Padukone is her usual self and looks quite hot. Chitrangada Singh’s commercial debut will prove to be quite fruitful for her. She looks hot though she could have been presented in a better and more powerful role. Anupam Kher is pleasant while Omi Vaidya is an entertaining addition. Sanjay Dutt charms. Bruna Abdullah looks okay but cannot dance, there are better item girls available on the block. The kid who plays Jerry’s son is super cute and is a good actor too.

    Technicalities:

The best thing about the film is that its tightly packaged and is just about two hours long. The background score is good. Shot in UK, the film can boast of good cinematography. Rohit Dhawan directs good for a debut and is here to stay. Music is decent enough with Mika’s ‘You’re my hero’ standing out.

    Plus points:

    – Pacey,
    – Good music
    – Entertaining

    Minus Points:

    – A few scenes lack originality

    Final Word: An entertaining watch.

    Rating: 3/5”

    Desi Boyz Review DailyBhaskar.com

“Story Treatment: A shaky first half with plot losing threads at most of times, Desi Boyz picks up post interval with much needed pace. Barring Akshay Kumar, rest every character in the movie falls prey to poor characterization. Confused John who is always in two minds whether it is helping out Jerry for nephew Veer and then sudden show up at escorts agency owned by Sanjay Dutt. Nevertheless, the perfect comic-timing between with Akshay-John followed by sexiest ever chemistry between Akshay-Chitrangada makes Desi Boyz a spicy watch. What adds glee to this ‘desi tadka’ is Sanjay Dutt who at times does overshadow the leads with his ultra-powerful performance.

Star Cast: Akshay Kumar is back with the bang. He beautifully switches lanes from ultra-jovial to sensitive guy. John Abraham springs up a surprise as he is able to match up with Akshay’s comic sensibilities. No more stone faced John but Deepika seems to be quite impressed with the quality as she comes across so at most of the places barring few moments in the second half where she treats with her dimple-cheeked smile. Chitrangada Singh is a treat to watch although her some more dimensions could have been added to her character. Sanjay Dutt brightens up the screen with his hilarious acts. Ditto for Anupam Kher and Omi Vaidya.

Direction: Rohit Dhawan as a debutant director looks very promising. He is poles-apart from his father director David Dhawan as far as filmmaking is concerned. He doesn’t waste time to jump from one plot to another with perfection which is rarely seen even in the veteran filmmakers. He is in complete sync with his cinematographer as camera moves do most of the talking for the film.

Music/ Cinematography/ Dialogues/Editing: Music is rocking with title song Desi Boyz and party number Tu Mera Hero ultra-groovy. Cinematography as mentioned earlier is worth to take a notice with some impressive angles which speak volumes about the emotions of the situations. Dialogues complement the situations of the movie. Editing is quite innovative with remarkable graphics.

3 Ups and 3 Downs: Honest performances, music, fast-paced screenplay and cinematography get a thumps up. Weak storyline, poor characterization and clumsy first half are the weak points.

On the whole, Desi Boyz is surely a one-time watch with Sanjay Dutt’s presence a USP of the film. ”

Desi Boyz review By Kunal Guha Yahoo Movies

“Movies on recession focus on two things: the trying state of affairs on being sacked or career options that are recession-proof. ‘Desi Boyz’ combines the two. Ironically, our lead duo lose their shirts to the global meltdown and then end up becoming male escorts, a profession that thrives on shedding of clothing. And since this could make our censor board a bit queasy, the filmmaker provides enough moral policing to almost seem like a statutory warning on how disgraceful this career choice can be.

Welcome to dreary, unhappy London. The financial collapse has led to many frowning jobless people like Batman and Superman who’ve taken to the streets. This crisis has also hit our lead jodi, odd-job-expert, Jerry Patel (Akshay Kumar) and his investment banker roommate, Nick Mathur (John Abraham). While Nick is ‘let-go’ due to the crisis, Jerry keeps getting fired for his deliberate negligence, specially to help the lesser privileged (as a security guard, he lets a guy make away with stolen goods as they were only medicines he couldn’t afford).

For Nick, being fired means failing to keep up with his hysterical fiancé, Radhika (Deepika Padukone), while Jerry could lose custody of his sister’s orphaned son, Veer. The two are mulling over these heart-breaking aftermaths, when a glittering business card slides across the bar table to them. It reads, ‘Desi Boyz’. The enterprise greets them with the background score of ‘Khal Nayak’ and the owner (Sanjay Dutt) offers them a job that innocently requires them to only ‘make women happy’. With little reluctance, they don their happiness-spreading avatars by shedding their sleeves, shirts and inhibitions to become dancing, singing party rentals. With their new business names, Rocco (Jerry) and Hunter (Nick) groove to songs like ‘Make Some Noise’ and ‘Subha Hone Na De’ to become must-hires for every bachelorette, bored housewife and lonely hag.

But this alternative way of making a quick buck has to be rubbished (not Indian culture, no?). So a certain online video of the Rocco and Hunter’s desi performance reaches Radhika and the social security in-charge who will decide on Veer’s custody. What happens from this point on is obvious. Jerry goes on to become Larry Crowne and resumes Oxford’s Trinity College to hook up with his economics Prof who also happens to be his college friend, Tanya (Chitrangda Singh). Meanwhile, Nick sings many songs shacking up outside Radhika’s house while sharing a quirky chemistry with her dad (Anupam Kher). The movie chugs along aimless to end with a court scene that is best left outside this review.

Akshay Kumar may manage to slash 10 years away by going shirtless (he’s 44). But in the acting department, he seems to be cutting down even more. Also, John without a shirt is enough for a section of the audience to be satisfied with his performance. Deepika and Chitrangda complete their scenes with smiles, giggles and occasional frowns, while the latter could be confused as one of the props in the movie. Sanjay Dutt’s cameo becomes the undisputed winner here, for his comic timing and overall act. Debutant director Rohit Dhawan has a long way to go for sizing up to his dad, David Dhawan, who created a brand of escapist cinema based purely of idiocy.

Most dance numbers sung by Mika will surely swing by radio waves for some time. But the dark recession number, ‘Jeb Bhi Khali Rehti Thi’ seems like a slower version of the 80s Bajaj bulbs jingle, ‘Jab Main Chota Ladka Tha’.

If your idea of ‘boys gone desi’ is tearing out of one’s clothes and jumping into a mix of disco bhangra that is supposed to charm women mindlessly, you know which movie to watch this weekend.”

Desi Boyz Review by Taran Adarsh

“DESI BOYZ has a bit of THE FULL MONTY and a bit of DEUCE BIGALOW: MALE GIGOLO. First things first! Is the moviegoer of today ready for a film that depicts the protagonists taking to this undesirable profession to make ends meet? Well, these things are common place in reality, so approval shouldn’t be an issue. The tastes have evolved and Rohit Dhawan ensures that the subject matter is treated prudently, paying enough heed to not impairing the sensibilities of the conventional viewers.

Come to think of it, DESI BOYZ is a lot of fun as the male protagonists take to pleasing their female clientele. The first hour, frankly, is akin to a roller coaster ride with lots of fascinating developments unfolding at a feverish pace. The best part is that a tinge of realism [economic crisis] has been injected to the plot, which makes the motives appear convincing on screen. In fact, it’s pretty evident that this is not a no-brainer rom-com. But it’s the second half that does a complete somersault.

Let me explain. Watching the second hour of DESI BOYZ is akin to watching an entirely different film. The problem clearly lies in the fact that the screenplay doesn’t hold and it tries to balance drama and fun, but with not much success. Akshay’s story in the University isn’t plausible, while John attempting to woo back Deepika lacks muscle. The courtroom sequence, with Akshay fighting to seek custody of his adorable nephew, is bizarre, while the finale is not compelling at all. In short, the second hour is a complete downer, diluting the impact generated by the first hour. ”

“Akshay has transformed into an actor who can handle comic scenes proficiently and DESI BOYZ is proof enough that he has indeed come a long way. Like always, he pitches in an earnest performance, making you notice the loads of effort he puts into his roles. John is a revelation in a role that demands him to look dashing as well as carry off the light scenes effortlessly. The role required a star with a debonair persona and charisma to match Akshay and John seems the most apt choice. The camaraderie between Akshay and John is piping hot.

Deepika continues to evolve as an actor and proves her mettle yet again. Chitrangda, who has been seen in middle of the road cinema/offbeat films so far, enters the plot much later [in the second half] and though she looks stunning and acts well, her character isn’t convincing. Sanjay Dutt is winsome in a cameo. Anupam Kher is wasted. Omi Vaidya provides good laughs. The child actor is really cute. Mohnish Bahl is just about okay.

On the whole, DESI BOYZ has an entertaining first half and decent performances as its plusses, but a tedious and least compelling second hour stands out like a sore thumb. Leaves a lot to be desired! ”

Desi Boyz movie review by Kaveree Bamzai India today

“Two men become male escorts but because they’re good Indian boys they don’t do sex. Every supposed female fantasy of men dressed as Dhoni and Yuvraj, firefighters, Tom Cruise from Top Gun and police officers is addressed in a series of songs which see Akshay Kumar and John Abraham jiggle their pelvis and shake their butts. These are Bollywood superstars? Watch them behaving like porn stars, flaunting their chests and their lack of acting talent in an assault on sense and sensibility.

The story goes like this-there’s recession in England where Jerry aka Jignesh (Akshay), an odd jobs man, lives with his stockbroker friend, Nick (John Abraham) who has an MBA from the London School of Economics (if Saif Gadaffi can acquire a degree from there, why not him?) But there’s one industry that’s recession proof, or so we are told in this most awful film-male escorts for adulterous women, women on the verge of marriage, women who want to experiment. So what do our two hunks do? Obviously go around London, distributing love (but not sex) as part of extended social service. And who is their boss but Sanjay Dutt, who is easily twice their size.

Size by the way is the running theme of the movie. When Akshay and John join the Desi Boyz bureau, they are asked for their various sizes-size of bicep, chest and you know what. Deepika Padukone and Chitrangda Singh wear short skirts and play pea brained women who are interested only in the good things of life. But the greatest love affair in the movie is between Akshay and John-with Akshay even slapping John on the butt.

You get the drift? Avoid at all costs. And please thank the CBFC for giving this piece of nonsense-where even the venerable Anupam Kher has to be tickled suggestively by someone who charges 200 pounds an hour-an A rating. The perfect movie for our Sunny Leone times?”
