Deepika to star opposite SRK in ‘Chennai Express’

Actress Deepika Padukone will be seen opposite Shahrukh Khan in Rohit Shetty’s ‘Chennai Express’. “Deepika is part of ‘Chennai Express’. She has been finalised,” sources close to the project told PTI. It was opposite SRK in ‘Om Shanti Om’ that the model-turned actress made her debut in Bollywood. Lot of names like Kareena Kapoor, Katrina Kaif and Priyanka Chopra were floating around for the leading lady of this film, which will go on floors from the end of September and would release mid-next year. ‘Chennai Express’ tells the story of a man (Shahrukh) who travels from Mumbai to Rameshwaram and what happens during the journey forms the movie. Interestingly, this is for the first time that Shetty would be working without his close buddy Ajay Devgn, with whom he has done eight films. It is for the first time that he would be teaming up with Shahrukh and Deepika. Despite repeated attempts, Rohit remained unavailable for comment.

Who is doing music for Chennai Express? IMDB has Rahman in credits, wiki has Vishal-Shekhar while I found in google many links claiming Himmesh.

    • sputnik 11 years ago

Don’t think its Rahman and doubt it will be Himesh. It is probably Vishal-Shekhar.

    • sauravjha 11 years ago

      Its Vishal Shekhar ritz. Confirm!

      • Ritz 11 years ago

        Thanks.

IMO Rahman would have been a better choice. Yes, he is choosy but then even Ajay-Atul are better choice for this kind of film – they can give the massy-southie touch. Not sure how Vishal-Shekhar can do justice. Not that it matters in masala movies anyway…

        • sauravjha 11 years ago

Ritz its better to stay away from Rahman now IMO especially for a Hindi movie. He’s been in absolutely terrible form as far as bollywood movie goes I can only think of Rockstar as his last good album in last 5 yrs rest have been strictly average/underwhelming. He was one of Prime reason why JTHJ cudnt become a huge grosser IMO. I think he is still good in tamil music n really loved VTV songs infact still listen to them but man cant forgive him for what he did to JTHJ 🙂

Anyways i firmly believe he will soon by replaced convincingly by Amit Trevedi he’s equally experimental and has been composing diff but good stuffs. Also Vishal Shekhar has had a good record as per giving hit music goes i can rarely recal him giving flop stuff for a big movie infact OSO rode on their gr8 music. So its not a bad choice i feel.

          • Ritz 11 years ago

I have said it earlier – its not Rahman’s fault.

Blame Yash Chopra for JTHJ music failure – he made Rahman give music in a certain way and hence it ended up neither being here nor there.

Rahman can do wonders in film like CE – southie masala / he can experiement a lot – and I think Rohit Shetty I assume is not the kind who would restrict his creativity in that the way Yash Chopra did.

          • sauravjha 11 years ago

Yes i agree blame should partly go to director as well but even if you take JTHJ out his music at best have been average wid rockstar being an exception. And its been the trend for quite some time now as far as bollywood goes. Even he had to recompose commonwealth song cos concerned ppl didnt like it. But yes Rahman in his prime would have been an ideal choice but not now. Anyways CE doesnt luk lyk it needs masterclass sort of music all it needs is a Hit music and I think VS can give that.

OSO Album was their Best with SRK.

RA.One was Such a Poor Album.
    ‘Dildaara’ remains My Favourite.

Is SRK playing southie hero in this ?

The getup, goggles looks like that. And Deepika on the contrary doesnt look one bit south indian.

But wait – its a Rohit shetty film so no logic there.

I am eagerly waiting for this film to release so that I can bash 😀

btw, I think this will be a huge grosser on BO.

        Ritz
I agree with you on Rohit and his illogical cinema. But I have a suggestion to make it logical and add quality to the product. Deep must be killed by a group of hooligons before the story begins. SRK encounters her ghost and keeps on making love to her without ever discovering the truth. He comes to know the reality only during the last scene when he is being chased by some villains. All of a sudden, when he looks in the back-view mirror, he discovers Deep sitting on the back seat. The reality dawns upon him and he loses control of the car and tumbles into the river. Nonetheless, he is saved by the ghost. This is the only way to make it an EPIC. 😉

          @mate

This again proves you cant take a slightest criticism on srk.

          • mate 11 years ago

            @Ritz

This again prove you have a deep lack of sense of humour. 😛

        • Ritz 11 years ago

Can you explain to me mate why is he wearing goggles? If you want to oppose me – criticize on the point I am making please.
          Thanks

      • sputnik 11 years ago

hmm… he is wearing jeans, t-shirt and a coat/shirt over that may be. How is that South Indian get up? And from when did wearing goggles become South Indian?

Deepika’s dress is definitely South Indian. I think she is wearing Langa Voni and its a Telugu dress. I am not sure if Tamilians wear it. But as you know for North Indians Tamil/Telugu is same thing.

“A Langa Voni (Langa Voni Telugu: లంగా వోని, Pattu Pavadai Tamil: பட்டு பாவாடை, Langa Davani Kannada: ಲಂಗ ದ್ವನಿ) is a traditional dress worn mainly in the states of Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Tamilnadu and Kerala by young girls between puberty and marriage. It is also called as two-piece saree or half saree. It comprises a Lehenga or Pavadai which is tied around the waist using string and an oni or Davani, a see through fine cloth usually 2 to 2.5 metre in length which is draped diagonally over a choli (a tight fitting blouse, same as worn for saree) and is usually woven with cotton or silk. A variant of this is Gagra choli of North India (the difference between the both being in the way of draping the oni or pallu).

The half saree provides a smooth switching from paavadai (full skirt) and sattai (tops), the traditional dress of small girls, to the complexity of draping a saree. Usually the paavadai and oni are brightly colored and contrasting to each other and look like the sari. Just like the sari, oni is also worn by wrapping it around the waist, with one end then draped over the shoulder baring the midriff.”

        • Ritz 11 years ago

” And from when did wearing goggles become South Indian?”

Since the bith of masala movies in 70s/80s. Well almost all south heroes wear goggles even when not necessary. I felt like he is wearing goggles unnecessarily off late and perticularly in this pic.

And yes, Deepika’s saree is not much of an issue (its definitely not Tamil anyways – the name of film being CE) but the way she looks and carrying herself is not typically south indian . She does not look one bit Tamil.

        • Ritz 11 years ago

          @Sputnik

Not sure why you brought up Pattu Pavadai discussion here. The dress she is wearing is surely not that.

          Its something like this:

Its something which you see in many south indian films. For example in Pithamagan etc. As the article says its worn by young girls traditionally.

        • Ritz 11 years ago

And I dont think its Langa Voni either. Here she is wearing a full saaree.

    • Ritz 11 years ago

Take some bits from DHKMN (which itself was a copy) ; some from Jab we Met – and mix it with Rohit shetty masala – you have Chennai Express. Thats what I think story will be like.

Be brave and talk to the point. Stop this “bhai” and ji” nonsense. You are not my brother. Even if you are I wont do haan ji haan ji here just for sake of it.

  10. sputnik 11 years ago

What is this? Looks like first half of Ra.One again. If Deepika is playing Tamilian why is she dressed like mallu?

    • Baba Ji 11 years ago

stereotyping and ghetoissed the south indians. deepiks look is atrocious. All in the name of comedy.

    • Bored 11 years ago

Ouch … this looks as dumb as whatever Shetty has done till now.

  11. Ankur 11 years ago

This looks pathetic and worse than oddly titled dubbed South Indian films shown on Hindi TV channels these days! Caricatures, stereotypes, silly gags…phew!

    • phoenix 11 years ago

Why does SRK always ends up loooking/acting like a psycho in action sequences??? Too much blood.

      • Alia Bhatt fan 11 years ago

haha. good you observed this, i once discussed this with sputnik elsewhere. in any fight involving srk, the first thing srk does is he gets a bloody nose 😀

        • phoenix 11 years ago

Its because of the natural disadvantage of SRK’s physicality. He can exude violence via body language like in Josh/Don. But for the punches and kicks to work he needs to show more anger on the face. Ends up with a psychotic edge with or without blood. Dhanush (Kolaveri fame) has the same problem.

      • stewie griffin 11 years ago

coz he has the meanest look among all the heroes of bollywood..srk can conjure up something mean in his facial expressions aka baazigar, darr n to a lesser extent don that non of the top actors can..that’s why he would make the best villain among the top stars..This is the only part of his acting repertoire that is totally natural imo..rest is stagey acting

        • dwnpiyush 11 years ago

This image given an entirely different twist to what we can expect from Chennai Express actually. In all the recent action films, the hero is always inscrutable- no blood- superhuman almost. But here the hero has taken blows. I hope this would not be a dream sequence. But somehow this still does not go well with the kind of posters they released earlier which hinted at the usual Rohit Shetty comic fun. This indicates serious action.

  14. Bored 11 years ago

SRK in action is always funny. The latest still looks rehash of earlier stuff like Koyla, Ram Jaane etc.

  15. Reddemon 11 years ago

Now this pic is the 2nd one which excites me more for this movie. Still the expectations are very Low.

I want SRK to get a compliment like ‘What were you doing in romantic movies?’

    • Suprabh 11 years ago

I would remove the word ‘romantic’ from that and then it would be a perfect statement.

  16. Bored 11 years ago
