Dabangg 2 Takes Juggernaut Opening

Dabangg 2 has taken a juggernaut opening at the box office all across India. The single screens that open early are fantastic and when they open at large at noon it will be historic.

The multiplexes have also taken a record start with housefull shows across the board. Basically the opening of the film is at record pace but what normally happens on working days is that multiplexes start better as lower tickets rates but pace slackens slightly from noon and a bigger drop around around 4pm and they pick up again in the late evening while on the holidays the whole day remains superb.

The opening of the film has assured it the biggest weekend in history of Hindi cinema and that too by a distance.

  1. Can Dabbagg 2 Do the Unthinkable?

    Dabangg 2 has taken a historic start which was always likely but the reaction of the audience at various centres across the country gives it a chance to the do the unthinkable and that is go towards a record figure on a working day.

    Although it is a tall order as collections at multiplexes tend to take dips especially in the late afternoon shows but if the craze seen in the morning can keep that a dip at minimum then its not out of the question that history can be created.

    Looking at the morning and what tends to happen in the afternoon and evening the film should surpass 25 crore nett for the first day with possibilities of higher total and a record first day although very difficult, cannot be totally ruled out of the picture just yet. The late afternoon and evening shows will give a better indication. The record collections for the first day are around 31 crore nett.

  3. Unthinkable is something like 202cr after 114crs, and todays time it wud be 350crs. I dont think it will do anything unthinkable. At most it will do 180-190cr which is no big deal for salman on a holiday period with such large number of shows.

    Dabangg 2 which raced out of the traps in the morning slowed in the afternoon and evening period as many multiplex shows had lower occupancies than the morning. This was always the likely scenario as without a holiday but at some places it slowed considerably. This could also be due to exceessive shows. The North was hit hard with evening occupancies down a lot due to the cold weather which is a norm for this time of the year.

    The morning shows suggested a 25 crore nett total was on the cards but looking at it in the evening and late evening shows the all India collections could come in around the 18-19 crore nett range which is still huge but the film has been let down slightly by the multiplex business.

  8. Lol. They are blaming cold weather for a loss of 6-8 crores that too only from north. Boss i am from north and therz nothing like that. U guys are just overexaggerating things from the beginning. All those were the fake hype created by taran komal and BOI (same they did for k786).
    BOI is behaving like salman fanatic from last few days like he is from 1-10 and ol but he is yet to cross 3I.

  9. Delhi/UP All Time Openings: Dabangg 2 Fourth

    Dabangg 2 has had the fourth biggest opening ever in Delhi/UP after Ek Tha Tiger, Bodyguard and Agneepath. Dabangg holds fifth place which means both Dabangg films are amongst the top five in Delhi/UP. The top opening days in Delhi/UP are as follows.

    1. Ek Tha Tiger – 5.80 crore

    2. Bodyguard – 4.20 crore

    3. Agneepath – 4.10 crore

    4. Dabangg 2 – 3.60 crore approx

    5. Dabangg – 3.21 crore

    The top three films were all released on holidays.

    The collections of Dabangg 2 were 10 lakhs less in Kanpur than Ek Tha Tiger mainly due to the difference in multiplex collections.

    Its a similar story around the country, the centres which have single screens the collections are very close to Ek Tha Tiger but multiplex dominated centres are well short which basically means you can’t get the occupancies at multiplexes on huge number of screenings without a national holiday.

    Dabangg 2 has collected 19.50 crore nett approx on day one as per early estimates. It is the highest non holiday opening day beating the 14.75 crore nett of Don 2 released in the same period last year but it has also released on 600-700 more screens than that film.

    As has been seen in the last two years it is really tough to collect really big at multiplexes without a national holiday and the trend continued with Dabangg 2. There is just not enough of a multiplex audience on a working day to pack out 25 or 30 shows daily at a multiplex. Some shows go house full but odd timing shows have very low occupancies.

    The first day is still fantastic and there should be growth on Saturday and Sunday as huge number of shows multiplexes give the film potential to get much higher collections as long as the public takes to it.

    1. I don’t see a point of giving numbers if they don’t qualify it as an estimate and may change. Many people take position based just on these daily numbers and after end of week they give different numbers. For JTHJ they gave daily updates and never updated their numbers and after 1 week they come back and say they were overestimating. Or for matter Talaash BOI is lowest. But in third week they are 8.5 crore while others who were giving higher numbers are 7.5 crore.

    Dabangg 2 dropped on Saturday as it collected in the 16 crore nett range as per early estimates. The single screen drop was expected as collections were extremely strong on day one but surprisingly multiplexes failed to show growth on Saturday. Some multiplexes showed similar business to Friday while some very down slightly but very few were up.

    The two day business of the film is around 35 crore nett which is huge as it is has done it without holidays but the next few days will tell that the drop that come on Friday was due to excessive screenings and cold weather or therew as more to it. The North was hit again in the evening by cold weather on Saturday.

    A. Looking at the MG’s the film is fetching from exhibitors it seems like exhibitors expect Three Idiots to be crossed but its all based on hype and craze. So if the content is above average it will be the biggest grosser ever due to the huge start.

    Looks like exhibitors/distributors have paid heavily for this.

  23. Breaking 3 Idiots record is not easy for anyone. 3I was a success due to its theme – which everyone could relate to. People across different age groups loved it. A routine action/romance would find it tough to cross 3I.

    But considering ETT came close to beating 3I, maybe Krissh 3 & Dhoom 3 have close chance of beating 3I.

    Cold weather is no excuse because Ghajini & 3I broke records even despite cold wave, blizzards etc. Trade shouldn’t even use such silly excuses!

    Dabangg 2 had a strong Sunday collecting around 22.50 crore nett. The weekend breakdown is 19.25 crore nett on Friday, 16.75 crore nett on Saturday and 22.50 crore nett on Sunday.

    The weekend total has come to 58.50 crore nett approx which is a record three day collection beating the 56 crore nett of Ek Tha Tiger. The cold wave has affected it in the North as collections have remained lower than Ek Tha Tiger in Delhi/UP and East Punjab while other circuits have recorded higher or similar figures.

    The film still potentially two more big days in Monday in Tuesday as Tuesday in Christmas holiday and Monday evenings will get benefit of next day being a holiday. The film should cross the 100 crore mark in the first week.

      Whether the film was non-holiday or a holiday release, how much business if affected on a non-holiday release, is another discussion. Everyone know about the non-holiday factor hence the predictions. The fact is that Dabangg 2 weekend figures are the lowest, one has predicted prior to release. Check any BO prediction thread of Dabangg 2, ask any salman fan who never expect anything less than 70 cr weekend. I can give you a popular link where a ‘sane’ fan of Salman predict 90 cr weekend and 250 cr lifetime.

        1. The fact is that the movie will earn 140 cr life time maximum due to good initial and get hit/ super hit status at best. And this is the end of so-called phenomenon, that’s all. Now wait for his 2nd birth, luck don’t last forever.

    Q. Three Idiots was released on Christmas and and despite cold in North it went on to be biggest grosser so that can’t really be an excuse for Dabangg 2?
    A. It can’t be excuse as far as lifetime business is concerned but initially the base is much wider today than 2009 so you are expecting much more people to brave the cold than in 2009. Eventually the lifetime business will not be affected as people will watch it but you can’t get the same daily footfalls in cities affected by cold weather that you would with normal weather.

    Dabangg 2 held up very strongly on Monday as it collected around 12 crore nett. It is the highest non holiday Monday of all time beating the previous record holder which was the first Dabangg released in 2010. Dabangg had collected 10.75 crore nett on Monday.

    The highest Monday till date is Ek Tha Tiger at 19 crore nett but that was on a holiday for Eid. The four day total for Dabangg 2 is over 70 crore nett and a big Tuesday is expected as it is holiday for Christmas. For comparison Ek Tha Tiger was 72 crore nett after four days.

    The business from Wednesday onwards and second weekend which will tell where the film is going. Around 150 crore nett looks assured on a worst case scenario and time will tell how much higher it goes.

    2. Yes it sounds totally copied. I had written that “The constant theme that plays seems to be at least inspired if not copied from one of the movies El Mariachi or Desperado.” in my Dabangg review but it looks like it inspired/copied from the same director’s movie Once Upon a Time in Mexico.

    Dabangg 2 collected around 15 crore nett on Christmas Day taking the five day to over 85 crore nett. The business on Christmas Day was dented by the India v Pakistan cricket match otherwise the film would have collected around 17 crore nett.

    The collections are the same as Ek Tha Tiger on Tuesday which also collected 15 crore nett though for that film is holiday in regions while for Dabangg 2 it was a national holiday.

    The film has shown strong collections all over for five days with every circuit doing very well but the next two days are very important and the levels they stay at will decide where the film is going in terms of lifetime business.

  51. So Dabangg 2 is unable to beat neither Ra.one weekend collection nor Bodyguard. Ra.One collected 86 cr 5-day weekend (81.5 hindi+4.5 regional) while Bodyguard collected 85.50 cr in its extended 5-day weekend. Bodyguard collected 140 cr lifetime with average/below average wom, and Ra.one (all versions) collected 120 cr with negative/ disasterous wom. And Dabangg 2 having below average wom, may collect somewhere in between collection of Ra.one and Bodyguard.

    1. i think Bodyguard was around 83-84 cr 5 day so it has beaten Bodyguard..!!
      and according to BOI Ra.one was at 81.5 Hindi + 4 cr regional=85.5 cr approx so its a touch and go case.

      so D2 is still 8 cr lower than a Similar Salman Release ETT(with almost same 3300-3500 screens and same Runtime ETT-2.15 hrs while D2–2.10 hrs)

    Ofcoz, It Uses a Fake Brand Image, Bastardising on the Jannat Brand, but with the Bhatts Selling it Smartly, it has Made the Money and is in the Success List FOR sure and Not a Heroine/FKS/Jism2/GOW which Failed with High Nett’s kinda Deal and Also Not a Fuck All One Like VD, Ishaqzaade, EV, SOTY, Kahaani[In the Same Range].

    *Add, to it BOI themselves had given it a ‘Semi-HIT’ Tag*

    Yes, Not a Raaz3/Murder2 kinda Type for Emmy, but J2 wud Surely Add to his Success List the way, Raaz2/Haunted/1920-ER/PKP Added.

    Infact, the Performance of KSKHH[Again, Bastardisation of the ‘Popular/Cult’ Sequel] is ‘Perfectly’ Similar to J2 on Many Parameters!

    Salman Khan is competing with himself. A statement I made soon after the release of EK THA TIGER on national television and repeated it last week, when DABANGG 2 opened to packed houses. The Salmania is very similar to the Bachchan euphoria in the 1970s and 1980s, when a Hit movie would touch the magical figure of 1 cr [a humungous amount then], while a flop would manage more business than the successes of Bachchan’s contemporaries.

    Of course, it’s a bit too early to gauge the amount of business that DABANGG 2 would do in the domestic market because the festivities have just begun and will last till New Year. With no significant release till 4 January 2013, DABANGG 2 should march gallantly and victoriously, accumulating a big fat total at the end of 2 weeks. Will it cross the lifetime biz of DABANGG and BODYGUARD? It should… Will it overtake the lifetime biz of EK THA TIGER? Too early to predict right now…

    The advantage of releasing a film during holidays is for all to see. DABANGG 2 arrived four months after Salman’s EK THA TIGER created a hungama at the ticket window. Of course, the naysayers and negative forces were quick to dismiss the second instalment of the franchise. Even the critics, most of them, tore the film to shreds. But the BO numbers prove that Salman is currently in a different space and the negative word/review will hardly make a dent in his popularity.

    DABANGG 2 is a success story. The nominal budget [excluding Salman’s fees] would be recovered from the sale of non-theatrical revenues itself. But the profits it will generate will only be known once the theatrical biz is exhausted. Till then, it’s Hud Hud Dabangg…

    1. well he does remind us of the bachan era as he is milking his masala terrain for all its worth just like bachan did in the 80s and got typecasted. But one difference is salman has many solo BBs and ATBBs while amitabhs major significant BBs were all multistarrers.

      1. Wasnt Bachchan’s multistarrer hits mainly in 70s? Thats the general impression – have never counted the no of multistarrers separately in 70s and 80s though.

        In eighties he was the dominant box office force, much like salman has been since Dabangg. While most are expecting Salman’s run to be shorter – he is still going strong!

        2. Dhoom 3 will be better just due to Aamir’s involvement? 😀 Dhoom is what it is. The so called quality actor starring in it is not going to change the basic character of the film. It’s all result of post-Lagaan (rather post Oscar nomination!) intellectualisation of every Aamir project. Whatever he does, is said to have quality or some underlying meaning. Dhoom 3 will have nothing except usual stunts, skin show and chase sequences like any other Dhoom film. But for Aamir even ordinary is believed to be “something”.

          1. well dhoom series is popular and a proven successful franchise bcos of what its ‘character’ is ,as ankur says. its about slick action,good looking babes, stylish suave vilians with personalities and fast song/dances. thats what makes up the ‘dhoom ‘ series.I am not sure how aamir will fit in this world.         Agreed totally that BOI clearly over-reporting the collection, their commentry show their intention. All the collections they gave from monday onward, are over-reported, comparison can be made with Taran’s numbers that were always lower before monday around 2 cr each day, but then they go neck to neck with him. Even If this figure considered as actual, yet It’s a bad trending, knowing the fact that Wednesday is its first normal day after extended weekend, so it should be compared with normal Monday of other movies not wednesday. If we compare first normal day of Dabangg 2 with it’s first Friday, then more than 60% drop indicates the real bad trending. And yes Wed actual should never be more than 6.5 cr as muni said.

        1. Agreed, it’s a huge disappointment not to cross 2 years old collection of a prequel. I don’t see a bigger release than Dabangg 2 in recent times, a solo release, record number of screens nearly the double of Dabangg, ideal period i-e chrismas 5-day weekend, a couple of open weeks, a sequel of an earlier ATBB that’s also a brand in fans’ perspective, best phase of its super star that some of his fans called it a phenomena. I’m sure If Dabangg 2 would be released with SOS, it would have struggled to cross even a 100 cr.

Agree that D2 collections r bit less than expected…. but that doesn’t mean it under performed… One should not compare other sequels to Dabangg… coz Dabangg 1 was ATBB and very huge historic success so it was always on the cards that Dabangg 2 would not over achieve that height… Its like TDK and TDKR… TDKR fell short of TDK by huge 90 million margin… But that does not mean It underperformed or flopped… Coz TDK was itself a phenomenon and historic blockbuster… So it was hard for TDKR to match that expectations and collections… TDKR is still a huge Hit…. Period..!!!

    Dabangg 2 grossed around 7.75 crore nett on Wednesday which is an excellent number for Wednesday. If we compare the normal seven day releases the figure is the best ever for a Wednesday. Three Idiots had grossed around 7.50 crore nett and Dabangg around 7 crore nett. The fisrt week will gross around 100 crore nett.

    The film has collected 93 crore nett in six days but it shows how important it is for holidays to fall on the right days. If a film is releasing on a national holiday week its a must that holiday is in the first three days preferably first which was not the case with Dabangg 2.

    Bodyguard was just over 94 crore nett after six days. Dabangg 2 will sustain very well in week two as the weekday numbers are solid but with film not benefitting a lot from the holiday period, the lifetime collections stay well below Three idiots and Ek tha Tiger.

    also salman shud immediately sign the films that he is being offered from the biggest of banners. UTv want him for a film, farhan and excel have been pursuing him for 3 years, karan johar is all over him to sign a dharma film and apparently aditya chopra wants him for his next directorial venture (i have doubts abt the last one though that it may or may not work at the box office)

    salman must realize that in the last 4 years the guys that ‘built’ his brand were prabhu deva, abhinav kashyap and kabeer khan. and his relatives ( jija atul agnihotri included) have been just cashing in on that brand..

    Dabangg 2 was down on its second Friday mainly due to the 20/20 cricket match between India and Pakistan which may have taken around 75 lakhs out of the film as it hit the peak evening shows.

    The second Friday had collections in the 4-4.25 crore nett range which took the film over the 100 crore nett mark.

    The drop from the first day is over 75% but the film will should have a huge jump on Saturday. Dabangg 2 is heading for record business in Bihar while the other circuits will be amongst the top three.

    Dabangg 2 collected 20 crore nett in its second weekend to take its ten day total to 119 crore nett making the highest grosser of the last quarter in just ten days. Actually it had become the highest grosser of the last quarter in just 8 days when it surpassed the Jab Tak Hai Jaan figure of 101 crore.

    The second weekend is not the best of 2012 as Rowdy Rathore was higher but the week may come out ahead of Rowdy Rathore due the holiday for New Years Day.

    Salman Khan’s DABANGG 2 huffs and puffs at BO; unlikely to reach 200 cr breakeven figure

    Rs.200 crore net theatrical collection is the breakeven point for the sub-distributors and exhibitors who have paid nearly Rs.100 crores as minimum guarantee (MG) for the domestic rights of Salman starrer DABANGG 2. They have every reason to worry now. The theatrical collections of the film have dropped drastically and the box-office momentum seems to have petered out faster than expected. The scenario seems quite bleak and leave aside profits, the possibility of incurring big losses looms large on the horizon for them. According to the last available information the domestic box office collections of the film till its second Saturday (29.12.2012) were 110 crores net. Even if we take a highly optimistic projection of 160 crores net box office for the film, it falls far short of the breakeven figure.

    However, the producers and distributors of the film Arbaaz Khan Productions are sitting pretty on a huge pile of money having presold various distribution rights for a whopping and unprecedented price of Rs.180 crores. They have nothing to worry. The question is if it will be ethical and morally tenable for them to leave their sub-distributors and exhibitors in the lurch. They certainly have no legal obligation to compensate for an eventuality where the film’s domestic box office collections turn out to be lower than the MG paid for it. Who knows they may still play the role of good and sensitive Samaritans and decide to follow the ‘Being Human’ mantra of their film’s star Salman Khan and make good the losses of their business partners in some way or the other.

  93. BOI crossed all limits to exaggerate Dabangg 2 numbers. Even Taran said it’s 7.25 cr on Tuesday, and they said 8 cr plus LOL, following the difference b/w them and Taran for all the previous big movies, it should not be more than 6.25 cr. As I said before from 1st weekend onward, they pump up the figures on daily basis, 1cr plus for each day. What’s their actual figure right now, subtract 10 cr atleast from that, will be a real figure.

    Dabangg 2 became the second highest grosser of 2012 after its 13th day as it crossed the business of Rowdy Rathore.

    The film added around 3 crore nett on Wednesday which is a very good number as the holiday period is now over. The total after 13 days is 135 crore nett and although it will not reach the 186 crore nett of Ek Tha Tiger, it should do lifetime business of around 160 crore nett approx.

    This would make it the third biggest grosser of all time behind Three Idiots and Ek Tha Tiger but ahead of Bodyguard and Dabangg

    Dabangg 2 collected 7.50 crore nett over its third weekend. The all india collections after seventeen days are around 143.50 crore nett. This makes it the third highest grossing film of all time. The drop week on week is 62%.

    Comparing the third weekend with other films of 2012 then it is lower than Rowdy Rathore which had the best third weekend of 2012 and is also lower than Barfi! and Housefull 2.

    The third week will come out at close to 12 crore nett which would mean the fourth highest third week of the year after the films mentioned above.

    Table No.21 had a low opening weekend of around 5.50-5.75 crore nett. The film did not show the growth that suggests the film can work in the long run. There was improvement on Saturday but limited while Sunday was a bit better than Saturday.

    Mumbai circuit saw the best business as it recorded around 2 crore nett business. The only plus for the film is that it collected much more than its competitor releases on Friday like Dekha Jo Pehli Baar, Dehradun Diary, Rajdhani Express and Meri Shadi Karo which all collected in lakhs.

    The new year is off to a bad start with the first five releases of the year not making any impact at the box office.

  101. Dabangg 2 Struggling To Reach 150 Crore

    Dabanng 2 after two big weeks is now struggling to get to 150 crore nett.The film dropped in the third week while the fourth week saw a huge drop with collections likely to come in the 2 crore nett range

    The collections of the film have come down fast after the holiday period and 150 crore nett will be touch and go.

    The film will not collect much more and the final result is a 8-9 crore nett total more than Dabangg (a 20 crore plus total looked a given after the first ten days) so although Dabangg 2 is a huge success as a stand alone film, it has not taken the Dabangg brand much further
